What radio station in germany tomorrow and what time?
suzie
21-07-2009, 03:04 PM
When I heard the snippets of WAG the same thing happened mixed with "Hmmmm, what will Joe Public make of that?? Will people like him more or less? Does it represent the Mika we all know? Will the world at large "get it"?"
:thumb_yello:
good points....
But the sad truth for me is that I can't exclude the Joe Public opinion when I listen to a new song as I so wish this record will take him to another level...:wink2:... but that's just me over worrying about everything in general.
Also, actually, I think I shouldn't have listened to that snippet on Friday... That bit did not reveal the changing tempos...
Now the end bit reminds me of the feeling when you have been spinning around and then end up on your buttom and the whole world is spinning around ...:biggrin2:... or it could be because I actually hit my head yesterday in a silly fall

I thought you were a guy. And we're not allowed to mention mika's family, yano. this is a fan forum :thumb_yello:
Who's to say guys can't make comments about other guys like that? And, as far as I know we aren't supposed to post pictures of Mika's family...because I've certainly seen people talking about Mika's family before, and nothing's happened.
I've been listening to this friggin' song on repeat since I got home :roftl:
Me too. Well, as soon as I get on the computer it goes on repeat. :naughty:
It's catchy but... it sounds like a High School Musical song
It's okay, not everyone has to like it...don't worry, there's still a whole album of songs.
And it's like HSM? :tears::no::naughty:
We're not allowed to mention Fortuné but posting pics of him near in NYC, near the ice cream van is all right ? I am
From what I know, those pictures were taken down.

This song has struck a particular note with me. I've been a teenager for almost a year now, but I never really felt like one and I hate to say that after hearing We Are Golden I suddenly know what adolescence is, because I don't, but I have a better sense of it now.
Also, I'm going for my first year of high school this fall and it seems like the perfect anthem for that. Teenage dreams in a teenage circus...:blush-anim-cl:

I think the general guide must be that if you see members of his family with Mika during his 'official engagements' (concerts, interviews, meet-ups..etc) it is OK to mention them without posting photos and videos. Meeting them private is another thing, that should not be discussed here...

Well for my view, i've heard it not a million times yet but a few ..
I think it reminds me of a kitsch 70's anthem type song ...
In fact the usual hybrid of many things from the past, quite a flavour of 80's i guess but also 70's glam rock kitsch too! lots of influences there for sure ..
something a bit pre punk naffness about it ...!:teehee:
Quite like it and no doubt will grow on me more ... not an instant wow tho!
Not sure about when he speaks 'We are Golden':teehee:
Good strong pounding single though and hope it does really well for him:wub2:
loved the interviews .... changing the album name is brill too!! Was sad the album was to be named the same ...

Well, you must have noticed that A LOT OF FANS are keeping quiet, even though they might have also sent their congrats tweet to him.
I personally take it as a purpose written song that has a different target audience ....and the purpose of the song is to reach that particular audience that has actually been underrepresented on MFC so far, yet are large in number. If he gets them buy this album he can rely on them to keep buying his records for the next 30 years.:wink2: The song is absolutely genius if you take this into condideration, and since basically everyone says it will be a massive hit, he is likely to have accomplished the mission.:biggrin2:
Now I could feel 'cheated' about him abondoning 'us' and on Friday when I heard the chorus I was not sure about the orgin of the song but as soon as I heard the melody of the first verse today I realised it must have been HIM cooking it up in his kitchen.... :roftl:...and this makes me laugh so much...
WAG will never have a place in my Top 10 Mika songs but I accept the fact he needed to release sonething extremely radio-friendly and non-Marmite, something that you just can't get out of your head. Plus, I do acknowledge his efforts to have all the Mika trademarks on this song as well.:wink2:
...and you know what? I think he was afraid of the reaction from the core fans and probably that's why he was not sure about the title though the record company must have been delighted and was pressing for this idea.(..but that's complete speculation from my side, of course.)
As for the album, there are only 4songs I have no clue of - though Dr John is likely to be something like BB -, so I don't have the least concern about the quality of the rest of the songs.
You're absolutely right with everything you said here. I can't but agree. It's not that I feel cheated on or let down although I might have sounded like it. It's more about having expected 500% and gotten 100%. I know that he will pick me up with that new album at some point. There's zero doubt about it, I know that it will happen.
I expect stories. The Billy Brown way, even more after the EP development and Toy Boy. I think this is another reason why WAG seems so flat to me.
Oh but one thing I have to disagree with: to me it's not exactly non-marmite. :teehee: And has anyone else had the thought that Golden might be code for something else?
Do you really think he might have been afraid of our reactions? Well, somehow this makes me want to take everything back and just say nothing. I mean I wouldn't want him to be restricted into a corner and be unhappy.
MIKA, if I can have my way you can write and release as many run-of-the-mill songs as you like. If it keeps you happy. And if you throw in a pearl every now and then :teehee:
Do not do painfully to Mika, criticizing the song
:no::no:
Oh no no, I could never do that  It would make me very sad if it came across as painful. I do believe in Mika :kaf:
WAG will go to #1
He will have a lot of new fans.
The album will hold some treasures for me.

You're absolutely right with everything you said here. I can't but agree. It's not that I feel cheated on or let down although I might have sounded like it. It's more about having expected 500% and gotten 100%.
Oops, you have quoted my post again, or which I received some harsh 'criticism' from a newbie or two.:teehee:... (though perhaps criticism is not really the best way to describe those words:cool:)
So, just in case anyone missed my many previous posts before, let me state that:
1., To me, someone's ability to write a song with a particular objective in mind gains my appeciation ..... (To tell you an example, Freddie Mercury wrote We Are The Champions with the purpose of writing a sing-along anthem.)
I salute people who can do that with ease. (I don't know if that's what happened in this case, too, but it made sense as Mika was talking about writing an album from a teenage perspective.)
2., To me, the ability to write a radio-friendly song is a gift I admire. Plus, if you don't have a song that can be played on the radio, you are out of the game, as simple as that.
3., There are different types of radio-friendly songs : there are cheesy ones, mainstream pop songs that everyone likes and the performer is actually replaceable as well as songs with something unique in them.
Now, Mika's singles, including this one (!) so far have all been unique and 'Mika-esque'. What I meant is that If I compare Love Today and WAG, for example, I'd say Love Today is a marmite song because of the dominance of the falsetto , whilst WAG has general appeal......though it needs to be confirmed by record sales if my assumption was correct or not..
Anyone is free to agree or disagree with that, it is just my reasoning for what I said or how I feel. :dunno:... and I love constructive debate.:wink2:
Do you really think he might have been afraid of our reactions?
Well, I don't think he is reading this forum anymore, but I think everyone said they liked the song or at least predict it to be a massive hit.
If he reads, though, I am sure he can differenciate 'positive criticism', especially it it comes from hard core fans, including 'the famous Violet_sky':biggrin2:
I do believe in Mika :kaf:

If its different, then I'll have to listen to it- and I did think I'd get me tea at a reasonable hour today
I'm in two minds about whether it'll appeal to teenagers- I think its more one for people looking back on their teens, which is what he's doing, I suppose, even if he's a lot nearer than me. The bit about "running around like a clown on purpose" rings a bell and makes the dreams... circus bit part of the whole. Otherwise I wouldn't be so keen.
I've been singing it all day- hopefully not aloud- loving all the slowing up and shouting! I think the lyrics are interesting, but basically I find it such a rush- so exhilarating. I keep seeing myself headbanging to it, which is a worry (though probably incomprehensible to actual teens)

It is longer by 30 secs.
He shouts the line
We are not what you think we are
We are golden, we are golden
and then the childen's choir comes in again and shouts out loud the same lines.
.. I think that's the difference.

Haven't posted on here at all yet as I wanted to actually have an opinion before stating it!
I remember hearing the LICM album sampler on Mikasounds and being overcome with excitement as each snippet came on. It felt like I knew every song the minute I heard them.
That was all part of the crazy start of the obssession as it will have been for so many others. I instantly loved everything about his work and it changed my life forever in a way that no other artist ever had.
So, OK, he's something special.:wub2:
So the anxiety about what comes next was warranted and I felt sick with nerves when I played the new stuff from the LA gig. Would they feel familiar like the LICM songs? Would they be as good? Or better even?
My gut feeling was..."oh, no, they're not what I was expecting" (whatever that menns???)..."what am I going to do if I don't like any more of his stuff???" I just kind of felt numb to them all.
By the time I bought the EP I had all four songs on repeat and realised that not only did I love every nuance of each one...but that I couln't decide on one over the rest.
How did that happen??
Well, I think it was because they were always brilliant, they were always Mika at his best, Mika evolving musically, Mika being more confident in making music.....but the anticipation and expectation overwhelmed me at the start.
When I heard the snippets of WAG the same thing happened mixed with "Hmmmm, what will Joe Public make of that?? Will people like him more or less? Does it represent the Mika we all know? Will the world at large "get it"?"
I wasn't just listening for my own pleasure, I was listening with the ear of the public and wanting to know what they would think.
With that feeling out of the way I can now listen and enjoy and get to know every note, word, etc and add it to the growing collection of songs that I love and that make such a difference to my life.
I've been thinking a lot about this thing with Mika's songs, where we're not sure about the song when we first hear it, then we turn it off, and it plays in our heads, then we go back to it (because we're compelled to) and absolutely start to love it.
I have a theory about why that is.
It's because his songs are not like any other songs out there, so we don't really have a reference point to start off with. The first time we hear a Mika song we're hearing something completely new, and that can confuse us at first. Then when we hear it again, because subconciously we know it's good really, we start to understand the way it works and how intricate, yet brilliant, his song is! Then we love the song with a passion!
That's what I think anyway, don't know if anyone agrees.

It is longer by 30 secs.
He shouts the line
We are not what you think we are
We are golden, we are golden
and then the childen's choir comes in again and shouts out loud the same lines.
.. I think that's the difference.
Yeah- I'd pick the whispering end, if I was making the decision.

I think it probably depends on the person...
As for me, I liked every single Mika song on LICM the first time I heard them and they were on different occasions as he had some up on Myspace before LICM was released and also sang some live at radio stations...
I also liked HMDYLM, Toy Boy, Blue Eyes, GGG and BIOTG the first time I heard them.
Rain and L.A. ... I was not sure about but I loved L.A. live and I expect Rain to have received some 'treatment' in the studio.
Lady Jane is a special song - I mainly love how it runs with the piano :teehee:
So, it seems to be that if I like a MIKA song first, I will love it 4 ever:biggrin2:
If we don't consider forming an opinion on the snippet and on the lyrics, WAG appealed to me the first time as well, but it was different. I kind of put it in the "radio-friendly like Hot'n'Cold, Poker Face or Just Dance" drawer...
Please don't anyone misquote this, I mean , when I first heard these I knew they would dominate European airwaves for months on end.. And I was right.
I sincerely hope I am right with my prediction this time, too:blush-anim-cl:...

I don't know if anyone mentioned this before, but what Mika says about the choir on the Clive1 Glasgow interview, I didn't even noticed it :aah:
He said they wanted so much the choir to sing the chorus, but they didn't want to 'cause it has the word "damn", and it's not appropriate for a church choir.
So in the end, the choir sung instead : " Ohhh....ooooohhhh....come from" :teehee:
I had to listen to WAG again to be sure that it was like that, I hadn't put enough attention before :naughty:

Well, I don't think he is reading this forum anymore, but I think everyone said they liked the song or at least predict it to be a massive hit.
If he reads, though, I am sure he can differenciate 'positive criticism', especially it it comes from hard core fans, including 'the famous Violet_sky':biggrin2:
:thumb_yello:
I quoted this as I agree 100%... and believe it or not I am enjoying the song more and more, it's only the lyrics 'teenage dreams' that is bugging me ..:wheelchair:.. (:naughty:)
...as you pointed out, it is just a too direct step from the stories we are used to..
I think you a right with your opinion, and you don't have to explain yourself :thumb_yello:
I just come from another angle: I think that Mikas songs are not written aiming at someone or something. I believe that he wants to tell a story and tries to find the sound that best transports what he is wanting to tell, or vice versa. Like when writing a song about teenagers he might want a sound that is rich, bombastic, at the same time transporting a sort of aggressive carelessness and anger about hurt feelings, and ends up with WAG. He knows exactly, what sound he wants, but I'd think that he knows very well that aiming at the mainstream would get him dangerously close to writing songs that are nothing but the smallest common denominator in music. He won't fall for that.
I believe that first when the songs go into production and they have to choose which ones to put on the album, people will start to give opinions what reception each of the new songs will get, and which would be a likely single or even a number one. My guess is that Universal was pretty happy that at least one of the 64 pieces he wrote had the quality of a mainstream radio-friendly song :wink2:

Ok... I haven't had time to read this thread at all so I don't know if people like it or not... but here's my take on it :
I abso****inglutly freakin' LOVE IT!!!!!! Listened to it like 100 000 000 times yesterday. Makes me want to jump on the kitchen table and dance and throw glitter around.
And what I notice is the more I listen to it, the more I like it.
LOL Vero...what a great way of stating it. That's how I've felt for the last 24hours too.
Truly this song gives me the same emotions that I felt when I first heard Grace Kelly. Wanting to jump up and down while singing every word and feeling almost empowered by the lyrics because at one time or another I had felt put down by a particular group or person. Mika has such a gift for writing lyrics that you are able to relate to. Not only that, but he does these types of "kiss off" songs in such a classy way, I love it. :)
I've probably listened to this song at least 15-20 times. I simply can't get enough since yesterday.

I am coming to the Argentinian gigs from now on instead of the home ones then :naughty:.
Believe me, you wouldn't be saying this if you'd witnessed half the asses that I have seen at Mika gigs, trying to f*ck other people over and just generally being assholes towards everyone. It's quite an eye opener, really.
I had to quote the bolded part because I think that you make a great point there.
And yes, I have also caught myself singing the blooming thing all day dammit :roftl:

Wow! Some of you actually think Mika Sold out with this - according to you - "audience friendly/ radio friendly," Mika has compromised, feel cheated about Mika abandoning us, - WTF??
Are you Nuts?????
I wouldn't expect everyone to like/love We Are Golden - But - Listen to yourselves - You are Not talking about the Mika that I & Millions of fans have come to like!
Did you listen to the lyrics??
I happen to Love "We Are Golden" - I actually usually respect others for their variable viewpoints - but - that isn't what irks me about your critique.
Listen to We Are Golden a few more times.
Listen to the lyrics.
Then return & get your heads out of your arses & actually critique it with some intelligence & Knowledge remembering who the Artist is!!
I am sure I will get my Butt Kicked here for my view on the few of you who think Mika sold out - But - You Pi--ed me off!!
I Love We Are Golden & my Congrats to Mika!!
I can't wait for the Whole Album in September!!
First of all, mind your language, you truly hurt my feelings.
Second I sad it sounds too commercial to me, that's just an opinion and has noting to do with not being intelligent, I'm intelligent enough to give my opinion.
than,I said it would be a good song to get his feet into America (what's wrong with that!)
So you just think people are stupid and have their heads in...(no I'm not gonna quote that) because they are not excited about this song and because they have an opinion about it.
With this post you, yourself don't sound that smart to me.
And it's like someone else said here, just like her I'm over 30 and it doesn't do it for me.
But, I have to say it's growing on me.
BTW; I never said it's a bad song,I just said it was not what I expected it would be and I still think it's not his best

Everything that has been stated on this thread are people's feelings and opinions about a song. Nothing else. Music is something that you feel, you like or dislike, but this is not something that can be rationalised or logically explained.
When you say that people should critique the song using "some intelligence and Knowledge" (why you capitalise random words including this one, I won't ever understand, but hey, each to their own) you are actually insulting a number of people, and that is not very nice to be honest.
Incidentally, a sign of intelligence would also be to know what you can or cannot say to people, and in this case I believe that you've overstepped the mark. This was quite unnecessary, don't you think?
We're just a bunch of fans giving our (subjective, as they would all be, this is not molecular biology after all) opinions, and everyone is bound to have different ones. As long as nobody is actually being offensive to anyone else, or to Mika, and stating these opinions respectfully, we should be fine. It's posts like these that threaten to throw the balance.

We Are Golden, eh? It sounds happy. But, it's a happy-sounding-sad-song-with-a-meaning. I hope he didn't hurt himself. I mean, he sings "I hurt myself" but I hope that's just saying, not doing. Because it hurts to hurt yourself. I don't want him to be hurt. Okay, it probs just fit in with the rest of the lyrics, but I am worried.
Okay, that didn't make sense. :aah:
So, I kinda like the song but I think it's weird. It sounds so typical pop-ish but also typical weird Mika-ish. :aah:
Okay, forget it, I think I'm just being weird. :teehee:

Don't worry, love : f we didn't post off topic this wouldn't be the MFC
SITM lyrics are poignant, at the same time so loving, so bitter and so wistful... I bet there is one guy whose eyes are brimming :tears: whenever he listens to it.
It's a beautiful love song, as touching as HMDYLM, in a different way of course
I myself am not partial to the jazzy piano part of it. It kind of ruins the magic .

okay, so no time for me to read all the pages either. but i've got to say, last morning when i woke up, plugged in my earphones n listened to the song under perfect sunlight and blue sky with fluffy clouds, i found life so enormously brightened at that moment!! it's both energetic and emotional. when i listened to the lines "now i'm sitting alone, i'm finally looking around....", suddenly i wanna cry.............. our boy can reli catch that tiny bit of adolescent sentiment n deliever it in a vibrant way.

I am stunned, shocked and well, quite frankly gutted :S
On first listen I hated it, infact so did everybody around me at the time. Which prompted some serious p*** taking as they know how much I like Mika. Add embarrassed to the above list
Ok, so now after hearing it what feels like a gazillion times (thanks Radio1) I can appreciate (?) its catchiness, but the whole "we are gawwwlden" (perfect description btw) bit makes me cringe.
What really worries me is, was this really the best track he had on the album? After such a long break this single needed to be as spectacular as Grace Kelly was, and surely most of us can admit it's just not? I was really hoping he would come out with something a lot better both lyrically and musically and a lot less teeny pop, just to show all his doubters that he could. Instead this is the worst example of sacharine pop so far and will just confirm the opinions of those who see him as a tacky kiddies pop star.
Sorry. No, really I am.

My recommended approach to handle the situation is as follows:
1., Confess it to Holy Johnny :naughty:
2., Read the whole thread from the time we heard the first snippet, then when we heard the song and see how our opinions were kind of divided and we also kind of overanalysed both the song and our expectations as usual ...
I think it will be a nice read..:wink2:

I wasn't referring to you - unless you said Mika sold out etc.
From what I read of your posts you didn't.
I was a "bit" crude but I don't think my language was that Bad!
I was & am still talking about the very few her who didn't just critique Mika's new song but Mika himself as if he turned into someone else. DUH!
I don't agree!
I don't think most here agree with those statements.
Believe it or not I don't have Anything against Anybody who doesn't like We Are Golden!
Yesterday one of the "few" stated here Emphatically that Mika will NOT be changing the title of his new album.
Mika has changed it already - Get Over Yourself!!
Love We Are Golden!

I think your tone was a bit harsh, and has continued to be
harsh, and now I'm asking you respectfully to scale it
down. It's fine to disagree, and it's fine to be passionate, but when you
start going down the insulting road it's time for the moderators to step in.
You need to "get over yourself" as well -- everyone has a right to
express their opinion here, but no one has a right to be insulting and
rude. Please reread the MFC Guidelines (link in my sig) if you need
to be reminded of what's acceptable here.

I made my best friend listen to We Are Golden and the first thing she said was "I don't like it, it sounds like High School Musical".
I was like "IT DOESN'T?!?!".
I think a lot of us have suffered a placebo through the release of this song. We have anticipated it for ages, it already had it's own thread, and all of those who had already heard it said it was brilliant. All of these things kind of led us to liking it or believing that we liked it because we already thought it was amazing. This is why it's easier for those who heard the single, without going fan-crazy about it months before, to admit that they don't love it.
I think we can all agree that it's definitely not the Mika material that we are used to, but we love Mika and support everything he does so we are determined to adapt. Others were just absolutely fascinated at the first listen, so the variety in the opinions are immense.

It was 30 secs longer and with 2 parts repeated, I guess, one being him shouting the chorus and then the kids's choir doing the same...
So, no significant difference

Just a bit- more choir, then another falsetto bit. A lot of people preferred it, but I'd go for the whispering end myself.

for all those interested in my WAG evolution, i have to admit that i woke up with 'we are not what you think we are - we are golden' in my head.
this quite disturbed me, cause i cannot deny the brainstoming power of that refrain.
so i guess i will come to the conclusion that i will listen to the song without fighting against it, still convinced that i don't like it, still disappointed it has been chosen as first single, fully aware it will be a huge success that will give mika the power and money to keep on writing the songs i love better.
so....HAIL WAG! i bow to you power
i even can see the usual trick sad words/happy rythm fully working in this song, i'd wonder if it were not like this.
i'll sing it out loud at gigs, and join every choir he might want us to sing, i know it will be great fun, but this does not mean i fully like this song.

[COLOR=purple]Yes, that is the one line in the song that I absolutely dislike. ]
wow, how strange! I find that my favorite part of the song. Being 15 is hard and the lyrics seem to slot in so perfectly with my life right now, i was really amazed that mika could still relate back to this feeling. by the time most people reach 30, they can relate.. but not in quite the same way, you know? I remind myself of when I was 12.. i hated life, i just wanted to be older. I was cutting myself and trying and trying to live upto what my parents expected of me, but i didnt fit in. i didnt make friends. my closest aunty had just died. i wished i was dead.
At college, when i turned 13, everything changed. It's weird but i could almost call myself popular. I became so much more outgoing. When i was 13 i discovered Mika, and while i wouldn't attribute my whole turnaround on him, he was defiantely a major factor.
Now i'm 15, i can't really relate to 12 year olds anymore, despite being in so much pain when i was 12. Sure, this isn't my all-time favorite Mika, but wow. This is a song and a half. It really sums up everything and leaves me kinda breathless.

I hear you :wink2:. And I'm very happy that the song has struck a personal chord with you. I guess that it shows that Mika managed to connect with certain people with it, and that is fantastic.
Maybe the reason why I don't feel identified with the whole 'teenage dreams' and teenage vibe is because, even though I have quite a strong recollection of how I felt back then, I didn't quite feel in the same way. I don't know.
Or maybe I'm just too removed from my teenage years in general as I have changed a lot since then, even though I'm as immature as they come for a 38 year old, and certainly haven't matured tons since my teens-only changed in my madness :lmao:

You're from Pittsburg? :shocked::biggrin2::teehee:
no its a song that was played in Pittsburg
at a Green Day concert last night
it was essentially Green Day meets MIKA
and now the unspeakable has happened
the worlds have merged and talk about a beautiful result
I found it on youtube....and I dedicated it to all MFC on facebook
because its Billie channeling MIKA or the spirit of MIKA or channeling the spirit that MIKA is channeling..whatever that is I think it is the latter

wow, how strange!
Wow!
I could say so much about this, about not necessary been ready with your teenage years although you’re not a teenager any more and how some people never stop having the ability to relate to different ages and stages in their life, that is where and poets, authors and songwriters come from…
But getting philosophic…nah…I don’t think so!:roftl:
Great writing Racinhorse!:thumb_yello:

This might be interesting to you guys!
I sure Enjoyed it!
Mika at his radio interview in Hamburg Germany talks about his writing the new ( yet to be named ) album.
He specifically talks about the beginnings of We Are Golden!
The whole interview is really good!
The new album stuff starts at around 1:41

Ok, not quoting you as you want to delete, but can I also find out Suzie? I have also "heard" that song during the acoustic version...

Well, I first heard it when I first heard WAG on Monday. Covering himself is fine, but it's a bit more than that, I think ... and I do not mean the song in the title..

I think it sounds kinda stupid too. It's the accent, and the robotic way he says it.:aah:
