I
I think the fact that you can associate it with many things it might refer to shows that it is a good choice... To begin with, people will start talking about it.. and I think this kind of publicity cannot be bad...

Also, I think he will probably have a long story to tell about the choice of the title, so that will again draw more attention on the album itself than any other dumb things journalists might want to ask him...

I think the title is very interesting. I keep thinking what it means. I didn't know the Simpsons connection. It just reminded me about that movie (A Man Who Knew Too Much??). I told my husband about it, and he started thinking too. So, I think that's good :biggrin2:

Artwork is wonderful, love it :wub2:

The postage stamp on the album cover is 1999.
A nod to Prince?
A nod to the year Mika turned 16?

It's funny I always think of that year when Mika talks about being a teenager because I was living and working in his neighbourhood at the time. When I first discovered Mika I felt an affinity with him for being a Londoner, but so much has happened since then. I'd sort of forgotten about this idea that we could have easily crossed paths dozens of times in 1999 because we are living in different worlds now both literally and figuratively.

Now I'm reminded that while I was doing my grocery shopping or rounding up students from their residence that there was this kid down the street dancing around in his bedroom dreaming of being a popstar. One that knew he had something special and was determined to make his dreams a reality even if the people who passed him on the pavement or in the tube station didn't give him a second look.

OH MY GOD. I HAD NO IDEA THAT WAS TIM CURRY!

Wow. Fail on me.

How couldn't you know it was Tim???

Cover wise, the artwork is growing on my, but the title isn't... and as for the discussion about what to refer to is as rather than the acronym, how about the scond album?

Perhaps someone is able to download this Simpson-episode, so that we can see if the new title has got anything to do with it?

I think we'll never know until he reveals it:wink2:... Probably neither of the two, just some random idea:naughty:..
I can also imagine him reading that aricle after Jacko's death and thinking about that as the title....When I read the article it was the title that struck me most... :wink2:... :dunno: The structure itself actually reminds me of Bowie's The Man Who Sold the World album.

...but given the right amount of time I can come up with 100s of more ideas and interpretations...:naughty:.. it's fun:biggrin2:

Well after sleeping on it, I still find the new title underwhelming, but I am getting my head around the change now, and I do think 'The Boy' is a good short term for it, since the acronym/initials shortcut is so unfriendly.

The artwork is predictable maybe, but still very effective, and I do like it. Especially the clown silhouette Greg :naughty::wub2: Has anyone else pointed out the Alex from Clockwork Orange bit yet? Bottom left.

The boy who lived:mf_rosetinted:

Right. I am going to share something with you all now that you will find breathtaking :teehee::mf_rosetinted: and I swear on all things mikaish it's the total truth!

Around Christmas 2007 I was reading A Harry Potter book and came across the phrase 'the boy who lived'. Around the same time I had started thinking about what Mika might do with his second album and what the title might be, as you do, as a fan. And I actually wrote down on a piece of paper..Mika second album title..'The Boy who Lived'. I had it in my mind that his second album would be about his transition either a) from childhood to adulthood or b) from obscurity to fame, and that the title 'the boy who lived' would be a good way to allude to survival instinct.

 I predicted the first three words of his second album title, almost two years ago.

I wish 1999 me (at age 15) could have met 1999 Mika.

I was a total nutcase at 15, but a rather creative one. I think he and I would have hit it off beautifully. :roftl:

I lived in the UK for part of the year I was 15. I was dancing round like a lunatic at discos in Scotland...pity it was 1977 and Mika wasn't even a twinkle in his father's eye.:aah:

I went back to live in the UK when Mika was 10 or 11...just when he was being taken out of school and starting his music lessons, I guess.

It would be way too weird for me to go back to my 1999 self. I had my third child that year.:teehee:

1999 was one of the happiest years of my life. I had just had my first child and loved becoming a Mum so much. :wub2: Plus I got engaged. I probably didn't listen to any music at all that year apart from lullabies :naughty:, in fact I know, I was completely and utterly off pop/rock music at that time. I certainly could have no idea at all that at that time, a geeky sixteen year old boy who I would become a huge fan of eight years hence was dancing in his pants in a bedroom in London, dreaming of stardom. :aah:

Really, when you think of stuff in that way, it kind of does your head in doesn't it?

I am confused??
I am one of the very few who doesn't like the new title.
I am surprised at myself mostly as I have pretty much loved everything Mika has done.
I think the artwork is Brilliant & Beautiful!
I love all the music I have heard so far!
I am hoping I will get used to the new title.
But - if we here start calling the new album "The Boy" doesn't that totally negate Mika's new title, "The Boy Who Knew Too Much?"
I understand why we want to shorten the title & i get that the acronym doesn't work as well as LICM - but -I don't know - it seems disrespectful somehow doesn't it???
I can't believe I am defending the full title - believe me. Hahaha!

Well I am one of the others who isn't keen, so you're not alone!

As for shortening the title, it just seems inevitable that it WILL be shortened, as it it a long title and we are lazy typers :naughty: and typing out the whole thing time and time again will become tiresome for most of us.

People are free to call it what they want, whether that be The Boy Who Knew Too Much (aagh my fingers :aah:), The Boy, Boy, TBWKTM, or, as in my case, WAG :shun:

Okay, so then why don't you LOVE it? :roftl:

It's not spectacularly genius, but WAG was hardly that either. Mika's just always been our boy, so I can't help but like it because it would make me think of him even if I'd heard it elsewhere - as apparently happened to you!

I probably didn't listen to any music at all that year apart from lullabies :naughty:, in fact I know, I was completely and utterly off pop/rock music at that time.

Pop music was terrible at the time. Think the only thing I really liked was Madonna's Ray of Light and even that was quite dancey/trancey for her. I was mostly going to clubs and listening to trance (even though I was already way too old for such things :teehee:).

But - if we here start calling the new album "The Boy" doesn't that totally negate Mika's new title, "The Boy Who Knew Too Much?"

How does it negate it? The acronym would just look like nonsense so I don't see how that is any more or less respectful.

And really as long as people are yelling at Mika and sticking pens and cameras in his face, ogling over screenshots of his crotch, etc. I'm really not concerned about anyone disrespecting him by shortening the name of his album title on a message board for the sake of expediency. :aah:

I just now saw it after blue sky's post where she circled it. It took me forever... look at the red poster right at the end of where she circled, in the black letters it says "if" sideways. The smiley face poster is partially covering up the dot of the "i"

A very good point.:aah:. When someone texted me to tell me the title, I laughed almost ironically..it was strange, I thought..yes, the boy who..., it was like deja vu.

I think my main bugbear with the title is it's a little too long, not quite snappy enough..I just liked the idea of a short title like We Are Golden. In general I do prefer short album titles, I don't know why.

The definition of expedience is: The use of methods that are advantageous rather than FAIR or JUST.
I would say that plays a part of my skepticism concerning the shortened name for Mika's work & why I am questioning if it is disrespectful.
Also it is just a question.

Well mine was just an answer. :wink2:

WAG was also used for the sake of expediency and Mika got a kick out of it.

But you know even if he hates it, that doesn't make its use disrespectful. Respect has more to do with intention than effect IMO and I feel the word "disrespect" shouldn't be used lightly since there are potentially far more grievous ways of disrespecting another human being.

I love that everyone is getting nostalgic for 1999!

I can't remember any specifics from the rest of the year but I drove from Chester to London for the Millenium gig at Greenwich (in my Mick Hucknall loving days!!) then back home again.

I loved being in London that night...went for pizza and wine before the show and the city was buzzing...people in tuxedo's and frocks swigging champers from the bottle...everyone on a high...then waking down to Greenwich and enjoying the gig. When it was midnight it just went crazy!!

On the drive home it was really foggy and non of the services were open!! (For those who were too young - everyone thought that the moment the date changed to 2000 in every type of machinery that it would come to a grinding holt or that computer hackers would mess every thing up! Of course.....nothing happened!!:roftl::roftl::roftl:)
I drove home in a cold sweat incase we ran out of petrol!!!

Like Christine said (and others have commented on) I too wonder if I ever crossed paths with him when he was a teen and I was being a dutiful tourist! :naughty:

Around 1997/1998 I used to stay in the same two hotels whenever I visited London which were in his stomping ground!

I remember I was in love with Aladdin when I was little. In 1999 I was four.. LOL. Didn't listen to much music back then, aside from my An Extremely Goofy Movie tape. Shake yo groove thang, shake yo groove thang, ya ya..! :)

ANYWAY. How does the cover-art process work, does anyone know? Does Mika tell Yasmin what he wants on it? Is it a joint project? Does he paint/draw too?

His poor real life toesie-woesies get no love. :tears: :roftl:

In 1999, I fancied myself a poet, was in the middle of my first real relationship, and spent the summer idolizing Billy Corgan from Smashing Pumpkins. Did I ever think that ten years later, I'd be obsessed with a kid from London who got a record deal? Nope. I barely knew where London was. I was 14, tentatively testing out the world I lived in, and Calgary was big enough for me. It didn't even register that there was a whole, wide world out there beyond the city limits. </nostalgia>

In 1999 I was in my final year of art school (after deciding not to pursue a Masters degree due to complete lack of interest and dedication), and was fully planning on moving to New York and getting a loft, spending my days illustrating and my nights networking (drinking) with the art director of Rolling Stone magazine and other fabulous people. Eventually, I would also be able to have a loft in Barcelona, where I would have many candles and lots of wine, and would paint scenes of the people that I'd see walking in the street as I watched them from my wall-to-wall windows. My Barcelona loft would be messy, with just a bed on one side and a full studio on the other, paint splattered on all the walls. Perhaps a cat wandering around. The New York loft would have to be smaller of course, but it would be in a good location.

I won't tell you what really happened since then... wouldn't want to burst anyone's bubble. :naughty:

1999 was the BEST year of my life. I can't tell a happier moment since then.
I was twelve and everything seemed to be going spectaculary fine. I had great holidays, a nice birthday party...I got the friend I always wanted to have,my first best friend. We were 35 people in my class and we talked to each other as if we were family. I was confident with my girls mates, and we laughed a lot talking about the soap opera of the moment with our teacher Isabel. They are the people who I'd always like to see again, and we try keep in touch as much as we can. We felt like we grew up together in primary school, and at that time we were leaving childhood behind...the close-down of a life phase , 'cause the following year I started high school and life changed completely to me.

Coming to this discussion a bit late as I've just got back from another few days away at the 'Black Hole' (ie parents-in-laws' house with no internet access!!)

I really love the new album artwork - it has a real 1970's feel to it (not a period I'm particularly fond of fashion-wise!) - am liking the retro-feel. I think the photo of Mika just placed there like that is a nod to those girls' mags that were about then - pics of popstars were randomly 'scattered' over a page. It's very evocative of that period to me.

The new title is more imaginative than just naming it after the single 'WAG' - I quite like it but I think it will take time to really grow on me. The title has shades of the 1950's to me - maybe it reminds me of sci-fi films or something?? Can't quite put my finger on it at the mo as to why I feel it's 'of that period'. Anyway, I think it kind of "fits" in an oblique way, because the 1950's was the time when teenagers really came into their own with music, fashion etc. I'm sure Mika wasn't alluding to that with the choice of this title, but it just helps to make it more appropriate to the theme of his album for me!
On the whole I like the change!

I liked the cover when I fist saw it, but it's grown on me in the last few days, I like it waaaaay more than the LICM cover.

The space theme is cool, though I don't see where that "fits in" with the title XD
Escape to outer space I guess?

The thing I love most about the cover, it's verrry "MIKA-ish". I knew as soon as I saw it it saw for one of his releases and its always nice when artists (in any kind of art) have a clear obvious "style".

i know, i'm late!! i tried to read the whole thread but i didn't succeed.. so, sorry if i'm saying something you've already pointed out.. :blush-anim-cl:

when i first saw the cover, i was like  as usual talking about mika's things..
but with a second look, i felt in love!!
i like the fact that it reminds slightly LICM, as someone said before, i agree in finding it a sort of sequel!

i don't know if it's me or if it was obvious, but i had this enlightenment just this morning watching it while reading this thread.. :teehee:
looking at the image giving it a third dimension, it seems that MIKA, the title and the little pic are flying over the room.. as they are part of a transparent ceiling that allows us to watch inside the room..
at the beginning there was something i didn't get, the perspective was not right imo.. but then i've looked at the image as it was representig a box with a transparent cover, and then i get it!! now it has much more sense!! :blush-anim-cl:
again, sorry if you've already said that, but i had to share my discovery!! :roftl:

the title doesn't excite me, but i'm curious about it..
the little pic is def not one of his bests, there were tons better looking imo, but whatever, probably it's meant to be catchy and not to show how gorgeous he is.. :aah:

also i think the album is called 'The Boy Who Knew Too Much' cos when you're a teenager you think you know everything (as my parents keep telling me) so maybe it's a play on that... who knows. Mika'll probably have some weird or unusual reason for it :naughty:

This is why I don't really understand the complaints that the photo of Mika is misplaced and should be hung on the wall. The pic appears to me to be falling from space well above the room and I get the sense that this shot of the room is meant to be a glimpse back in time from the present point (or perhaps the reverse, a look to the future from a past point). That outside Mika's walls, instead of his crappy school existence, the entire universe was awaiting him and his 16-year-old imagination has now manifested itself in this popstar called MIKA whose picture is drifting down from above.

Interesting and beautiful :wub2: Christine!

the complaints about the misplacing of mika's pic are exactly what makes me get the perspective game!!
infact the rounded white frame gives the idea you well explained!!
i'm a bit slow in getting things probably!!! :roftl:

i love this aspect of mika's art!!
at first sight you think "uhm, well, that's nice/funny..."
but if you understand the meaning or if you can find your own sense, then you can really enjoy the whole lot!! :thumb_yello:

e.g.
from when i get the perspective game, i'm really much more into this artwork cover then before!!
the same happened with WAG.. at the beginning it was a strange apparently happy song, but then i've found a sense and got the sufference in it as well, and now i love it!!

You reminded me of lines from a poem :biggrin2:

"Time's wrong-way telescope will show
a minute man ten years hence
and by distance simplified"

from "Simplify Me When I'm Dead" by Keith Douglas

Oh interesting. :thumb_yello:

I also like the following lines:

Through that lens see if I seem
substance or nothing: of the world
deserving mention or charitable oblivion

It's all about perspective isn't it?

All that nostalgia talk for 1999 made me think how nice it is for Mika that his 16-year-old dreams have become a reality, but wondering how it is that my golden life took such a horribly wrong turn. :aah: :teehee:

Glad you like it - the poem stuck in my head for some reason. The chap is a 2nd WW poet - killed in 1944, age 24

It's all about looking back after the lapse of time, so that short-term things get forgotten, and what remains is a simpler, clearer view - like Mika's "cartoon" self on the album cover. I like the idea of looking back being like looking the wromg way down a telescope - you see less detail, not more - and it reminded me of the perspective of looking down (and back) onto Mika's teenage bedroom.

"Through that lens see if I seem
substance or nothing: of the world
deserving mention or charitable oblivion"

This makes me think of how perspective changes over time when it comes to art and music appreciation - the "greats" we recognise now may not have been recognised in their lifetimes (eg Van Gogh), or if successful, may have competed with people whose work did not stand the test of time.
eg Mozart and Salieri (who?)
or Handel's "Messiah" and Coleridge-Taylor's "Hiawatha's Wedding Feast" (both were major choral works performed equally in the early part of the 20th C)

I hope Mika stands out as a great in time too :thumb_yello:

To me, it is also interesting how my perspecive changes over time when it comes to appreciation of art and even music. I think it is likely to have to do with the experience we can relate to that piece of art. As you become older, you have more experice to draw from and your perspective changes as well. I think this theory can be applied to society accepting some visionary artists rather late, too... :wink2:

Kids these days care too much about how they look. I didn't care what I wore/how I looked when I was that young! I hated combing my hair and washing my face!

And I'm not slow, I did see it on Mikasounds, just didn't see this topic before.
