Are there any Rufus Wainwright fans here? I have been a huge fan of his for many years and am really looking forward to buying his record this week! I am sure it will be fantastic just like all of the rest have been.

I also found out last night that he is, indeed, going to be touring in my home state, so I am so happy about that! I got into Rufus right when my boyfriend and I began dating, so his music is special to us. We're excited at the idea of finally getting to see him perform his songs live. :)

So anyone else? Favorite record? Or favorite song? Discuss!

I must say I adore 14th Street!

I'd def suggest you check out his version of the song "Hallelujah." It is really beautiful! His voice is gorgeous...

Other songs that I personally love: Beauty Mark, Danny Boy, Little Sister, April Fools, In My Arms, The Art Teacher, Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk....just to name a few. :)

and yes...the web is a great place for great music disscussion, but i love getting into it with other ppl...i can pretty much tell u everything you'll ever need to know about U2 and (deep breath) QUEEN!

some of Turners lyrics are genuis...

"Everybody's trying to crack the jokes and that to make you smile
Those that claim that they're not showing off are drowning in denial
They're not half as bad as me say anything and I'll agree
When it comes to acting up, I'm sure I could write the book"

oh, you are awesome....LOL! Yeah, I do love Gwen (especially with No Doubt) and Queen is actually my all-time favorite band!! So I guess we could both share stories about them since we're probably both miniature experts concerning them. ;)

Um, other bands I love would be the Killers (just saw them last Friday and it was awesomeeeee)... umm...Mika, of course... :) I also love Elton John, Hot Hot Heat, the Beatles, Lily Allen (though I find her kind of annoying as a human being...ahem), Franz Ferdinand, ELO, Boston, Keane, Rufus! (lol), Relient K, Sherwood, Del Amitri, Muse, the Pretenders, the Bee Gees, the Goo Goo Dolls, Brian Setzer Orchestra....and that's all I can think of!

You? :)

Oh, and those lyrics are good! I'm interested to see what sort of melody goes along with the lyrics.

Did you know No Doubt is reuniting in 2008?? The band has said numerous times that after Gwen's concert, they'll be going into the studio...CAN'T WAIT!!

What's this about Lily Allen??? She's in the news all the time....she seems like a spoiled brat, but I can't help but like her songs...lol.. I was going to go to her show (bought tickets and everything) and then she cancelled her US tour. *growl*

I like the ones on your list too! Old school is the best. I think that's one thing I love about Mika. He's got a classic rock thing about him that is so appealing. :)

Glad to see another fan! And I agree about his vocals. I think he is so underrated (at least here in the US). I am shocked that he is still a fairly unknown artist. I hope this tour helps him out though. That's one thing he has lacked, I think - touring in the US.

[QUOTE=mandilambi;175452I am shocked that he is still a fairly unknown artist. I hope this tour helps him out though.[/QUOTE]

Even though he has five albums out what kinda holds an artist back in the US is a person's sexual orientation. I find that very sad because the only thing some people are care about is if people are homosexual and in the states that sometimes makes a big difference in someones career and that could partly be why. And the tour will probably launch him futher.

Yeah, it makes me so mad how journalists always refer to Gwen as the "Former No Doubt singer" or the "Ex No Doubt singer." How many times does she have to say that they're not broken up for them to believe her? Grrrrr... :sneaky2: I guess once the new album and tour come around they'll start to eat their words. ;)

MIKA&RBDluvr101, I suppose you could be right. It seems a little strange how this could be a factor for Americans because Americans try to act so independent minded with everything else. To me, if the music is good, I'll listen to it!!

And I also imagine the tour will help him. If I am correct, he hasn't done an outright tour since 2004 or so... or at least I think that's right. I know that I wanted to see him when he came around back then, but didn't manage to do it in the end. I'm so glad he's doing another tour now, though, cos I've waited a long time to see him!

I don't really like Amy Winehouse because she hasn't been too good to her fans from what I hear. I have heard numerous stories about her cancelling shows because of how drunk she was. And someone on here even posted that Amy went out on stage, threw up, and left. That's just not cool to me...

CartoonKellyGreen - Gwen's already going back to her roots. Her recent tour is sooo much more like a No Doubt show than her last one! I am going to see her June 4th and 8th...I am so excited, especially since it's the Gwen I love the best. :)

And yeah, Rufus' cd came out today! I am going to get it tomorrow, because I was going to have to drive far to get it and I was just too tired after work. :( I can't wait...I'm so eager to hear it. :)

I really like Rufus Wainwright. I don't actually own any of his albums but if his song is on the radio (which they really don't play here) or his video's come on, I don't change the station. His songs are amazing and his voice is different. I hate turning on the radio and hearing the same sound on all the stations. One day I almost threw my stereo faceplate out the car window because on 3 out of 4 stations, they were playing Coldplay (I'm sorry, I'm not a fan, all their songs sound the same to me)!!!! I try to give the radio stations a chance and then they blow it by doing this!!!:sneaky2:

Okay, sorry, that was an uncalled for rant. *whew* I feel better..

Now, back on topic....Rufus is great!!!

CartoonKellyGreen, out of the two I liked LAMB better, but you have to admit that TSE had some gems. Four In the Morning and Don't Get It Twisted are awesome...and I love it that Tony Kanal worked on those tracks with her. :)

Good luck on getting Gwen tix! My boyfriend got me us front row at her show in Omaha and I got me and my sister 4th row for her Chicago show! I cannot wait....it's just about all I can think about...lol

My alltime favorite ND songs would be a tie between Sunday Morning and Bathwater. I could listen to those two songs for the rest of my life and I'd be happy...LOL.. As for my favorite album, I have always love Tragic Kingdom. I've been a fan since it came out which was, what, 10 years ago? Yikes, makes me sound old... I also loooovee Return of Saturn..,mostly because Gwen completely poured her emotions out on that record and I love that about her.

OMG i'm so excited about the whole No Doubt thing (by the way what are your favorite No Doubt songs...albums ect):biggrin2: :biggrin2:

None because, truthfully I hate No Doubt. And having a bad album does NOT happen to every artist.

...wasn't really asking u....

name an artist who doesn't have one album that isn't as gud as there others...i know i can't think of any artists who constantly produce amazing albums year after year after year...simply put, artists try something new, and it doesn't work out...

I would have to agree that in general, artists eventually put out an album that is poorer than the others. This certainly doesn't have to be true in ALL cases, but certainly most.

Oh, and I <3 Tragic Kingdom. Would love to see them ska/rasta/rock roots with their next record. It's going to be huge, I can just tell!

Also I am listening to Rufus' new cd now. It is really great. My favorite song is definitely "Tulsa." I love the fac that he wrote this about Brandon Flowers! <3

PS. I'm buying my tickets for his concert tomorrow!! YAY!!!

Oh, you're welcome for introducing him to you! I'm glad to have done so. More Rufus fans in the world is a good thing. :)

As for No Doubt, the guys have actually been in the studio and have even come up with ideas for the new record. I also heard that Tony was considering going with Gwen on her tour, so they could write songs together on her down time! She's also said that she is so ready for the No Doubt come back. They have said that they hope to have a record out in 2008, but they haven't said when exactly. No Doubt tend to take their time with things, so I would imagine it would be late 2008/early 2009. :)

I love him. I can´t choose a favourite album. Rufus Wainwright, Poses, Want One & Want two...And the latest, Release The Stars. This album was very surprinsing for me, because (i don´t know why) i expect something completely different.
And seeing him live is a "delicious" :mf_lustslow:

Hey, CartoonKellyGreen, I wanted to tell you I listened to Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not and I really enjoyed it! I must say my favorite track right now has to be I Bet You Look Good On the Dancefloor. That song is really kickin'! I also like A Certain Romance. It kind of sticks out since a lot of the songs are really hard and then they shock you with a nice little ballad.

I must admit that the lead singer has a unique voice! As soon as he sang I thought "Dannnnnggggg, is he British or WHAT?!" LOL!!!

I'm still listening to it, so I will add more comments once I've heard it more!!!

Thanks for the recommendation. :)

Just happened to see this thread on the first page a few minutes after I
got this email from the 9:30 Club (which is where MIKA performed here
in June) -- if any Rufus fans here are in the DC area you might be interested :)

Singer-songwriter and pianist Rufus Wainwright (son of Loudon Wainwright III and Kate McGarrigle) garnered critical success with this year's Release The Stars. Now, Rufus is taking his folk/pop music to a new stage with his opera, Prima Donna, which he plans to start writing next year. Rufus Wainwright is playing two special solo performances over one weekend at 9:30 Club this December. With his half-sister Lucy Wainwright Roche opening the show, this is one family affair worthy of a standing ovation.

Surprise! At the Club!

Oooh, how was Do I Disappoint You live?

Yeah, that was one of the longest concerts I have ever been to. His best performances for me was def Between My Legs, Get Happy, and 14th Street.

Oh, and my boyfriend was very disappointed about there being no Hallelujah, as that was his fave song that Rufus has sung too. :)
Between My Legs is always great live! Who did the speaking part?

Get Happy is just awesome, I love the dance. AND he looks mighty fine in drag.

Ohh ours was slightly different (and better in my opinion :naughty:)

Do I Disappoint You was wonderful live. Definitely another highlight. Also a girl from Kansas City did the speaking part. It gave me chills! I was so glad my boyfriend filmed and that it turned out so well. Also his performance of Get Happy was completely fantastic... it was such a riot. :)

As for the other setlist being better....ahem, well that's certainly down to opinion.

Who bought the "Rufus! Rufus! Rufus! Does Judy! Judy! Judy!" DVD i.e. his concert at the London Palladium recreating Judy Garland's famous Carnegie Hall performance? Or the CD version i.e. the audio recording of his concert at the very same Carnegie Hall?

I haven't yet. But I was watching some videos this morning from it on YouTube and it's amazing. I want to buy it ASAP.

* Somewhere Over the Rainbow: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hrnT2VEsuHc (accompanied by his mother, Kate McGarrigle, on piano) :wub2:
* The DVD trailer (i.e. Get Happy, and Zing! Went The Strings Of My Heart): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LOzZ20q7QC8
* Puttin' On The Ritz: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QSuUxhRJ44g

There used to be an awesome video from that concert of him performing "San Francisco" (he absolutely rocked the song, made it his own) but the user took it down. I'll see if I can upload it later.

I really want to see him on Feb 2nd at Hamer Hall in Melbourne but I don't have money for tickets right now. I hope they don't sell out soon like the Feb 1st show at Hamer Hall did.

I asked for the dvd/cd for Christmas....I asked for it for my birthday...and still don't have it... lol So I hope to buy it with my next paycheck. I am sure it's great. He does a wicked take on Judy, that is for sure.

I hope you manage to get tickets. I can tell you'd have a blast. :)

Oooh, he did the Art Teacher, Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk, and Poses. They're gorgeous live.

What were your favourite performances from that list?

Well I'm glad he did Poses, he wasn't even supposed to because it wasn't on the setlist or anything so it was a complete surprise. Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk was HILLARIOUS. He messed it up in so many ways and ended up laughing through most of it and making up his own funny little new version as he went along....and then did the whole thing again correctly so we kinda got it twice :thumb_yello:

Tulsa was great live too cus it's one of my favorites. Do I Dissapoint You was incredible because of how big it sounds!! I'vealways loved Beautiful child live an his version of Macushla had people applauding for about 15 minutes after before he could start the next song (and half the people in there in tears).

I wanna go again now. Thanks :sneaky2:

I've never had one single album of his that is my favourite, I have a bunch of favourite songs from every album + music he's composed for films which I've compiled into a 30-track long "best of" playlist. I can list it if you want. :naughty:

Although, I'll say, I love the direction he took in Release The Stars, which he himself he said is more representative of him as it's the first album of his that he's been the producer.

Want Two is still an excellent choice. :thumb_yello: The stand-out track on it is "This Love Affair" which is absolutely stunning (his voice, the piano, the lyrics... all perfect), it's amazing if you sit down and listen and really let it sink in, I can't listen to it without my heart aching. "The Art Teacher" is also beautiful, the lyrics aren't conventional but it's a lovely piano piece. "Gay Messiah" is pure genius, aside from sounding light and floaty I love the lyrics ("He will then be reborn from 1970's porn..." :naughty:). "The One You Love" is lovely, great vocals and a great acoustic rock-ish sound. "Waiting For A Dream" is nice, very dreamy and ethereal, the message is interesting too.

Rufus was amazing last night. It was just him with the piano and the guitar on stage! :wub2: He talked a lot! He indeed sang songs from every album and one new one that I don't know... and April Fools of course! :naughty: And we met him after the show!!! I introduced myself, shook hands with him and gave him a silly drawing of him as a hobbit and he liked it, a-ha-ha! :lmao: I must admit that I was slightly worried about giving it to him, 'cause I had no idea what he thinks of gifts from the fans, but I'm glad I was brave enough to take my chances and his sense of humor appeared to be good enough. :naughty:

I'm still on cloud nine. :harp:

Like a said he performed on his own for the whole time, starting from Grey Gardens and ending with Foolish Love. It lasted for about an hour and a half. He talked a lot between the songs and made jokes. He told us how he once almost performed in Finland. Apparently he was supposed to open for Sting and didn't get to do it because Sting got ill. So he went to stare at fat swans instead. :naughty: I think that was an April Fools Day's joke or he messed up with countries as I've heard that he really opened for Sting here four years ago.

He asked us how to say 'thank you' in Finnish. He kept saying 'kilos' although it's 'kiitos'! He wanted us to sing the ending of Sanssouci, and I filmed that! :lmfao: He told the story behind Gay Messiah which I also filmed right after Sanssouci. Oh and he sang This Love Affair... SO beautiful. He kept talking about Sibelius because he's a big fan and told us TLA is such a Sibelius rip off (joke of course). "I'm glad he's not here!" And he mentioned something about having listened to symphonies on acid: "And that's why I'm wearing this shirt." And told his pants were orange although they clearly were red. He pretended he didn't remember the lyrics for Want and said "let's sing a funny song about death" when he was starting Matinee Idol. Stuff like that. He sang 11:11 which he hadn't sung for two years and I was in heaven again. I think I was there through the concert. He sang a new song but I don't know what it's called. That was the first show of the new tour so he was apparently allowed to make many mistakes. :naughty: But he did brilliant anyway! The audience were really great, we clapped standing and once a security guy/woman yelled us "sit down".

After the show we went outside and Anzuzu wanted to get a taxi, but didn't get it instantly. Good for us, because she soon noticed the red pants so we were the first to meet him! He had his pen ready and asked people what they wanted him to sign. He was so nice. We took pics with him and of him and swapped cameras constantly. Rufus was amused by the fact that I had made him look like a hobbit and thanked me twice. He also asked if the drawing was for him to keep when I had already given it to him. So thoughtful of him! No-one can ever thank me as much as Rufio Sandilands though. (Palladium's keyboardist.) His record is hard to break, hahahaa! When Rufus left we played the Queen of England and waved to him like we did to Mika at Hammersmith!

Oh, and I was going to put my MySpace url behind the drawing so he could look for more if he wanted... But I forgot. Well, I guess that would have been too extreme anyway. :naughty:

To Scut Monkey: we're on his official forum. Can you give the link to the unofficial please? It might be even better, like this is better than Mika's official forum, hehe!

Have you ever seen Rufus perform live? Me not. I hate crowds (social phobia) so I usually don`t attend big concerts, Mika is an exception. But Rufus probably performs only in small venues, I don`t know but his music is like chamber music so I cannot imagine it in a huge stadion. Mika is more universal in this I think, probably he`ll be cool also in a huge stadion (though I`m not going to Paris, I`m doing Amsterdam in July, it is open-space so I should cope with the crowd better I hope, or someone from MFC will have to hold my hand ).
Also I usually listen to Rufus in the evening, in melancholic moods.. But to Mika I can listen any time, he`s great even in the morning. I can listen to Mika when I`m happy or sad, it plays some of my strings anyway somehow. When I`m happy -> I`m happier, when I`m sad -> I bear the sadness better.
