Born in the late 60s or early 70s? Then the '80s is surely a decade that influenced you. You may even remember a little bit if you were born in the early 80s...

- Come On Eileen (Dexy Midnight Runners)
- Tide is High (Blondie)
- Red, Red Wine (UB40)

...these were only some of my favourit songs from the 80s.

There was Live Aid, Band Aid, and USA for Africa. Other artists who made their mark in this decade were Michael Jackson, Prince, Madonna, Whitney Houston, Cyndi Lauper, Bowie, Wham, Rick Springfield, and the Eurythmics just to name a few.

My favourite show was FAME, but other popular shows were the Cosby Show, Different Strokes, Fantasy Island and the Love Boat.
I enjoyed the movies Flashdance and E.T. the Extra Terrestrial, Sixteen Candles and the Breakfast Club. Breakdancing was popular too!

Tell me what you remember?
How did the 80s impact you (besides MIKA being born...)? :wink2:

I'm an 80s girl! My formative years.

Isn't it scary though how it only feels like yesterday...

For me the 80s is:

Hair gel/hairspray, the smell of it.
Shoulder pads in T-shirts - horrible.
Flat shoes OR stilettoes and nothing in between
Perms - not that I had or needed one!
Gender-benders (Boy George, Marilyn, David Sylvian, etc)
Stock, Aitken and Waterman
Piano house and acid
The Sony Walkman!
Dallas/Dynasty

I'll think of more when I've slept on it, it's late here!:biggrin2:

On the day Mika was born I was 14 years and 161 days old; I was on holiday in Corfu! Little did I know then..:roftl:

I was born in 1985, but I actually remember a lot of it. I remember hearing songs by Prince, Wham, and Madonna on the radio. I also remember not being allowed to watch MTV...lol..

The 80s rocked. Still love to listen to the music...

I was born in '87, but the 80's were still rockin' the airwaves in the early 90's, when I was ickle! :biggrin2: Because of this, I love loooooaaaaaads of 80's music!

Some of my fave 80's stuff~

UB40 (one of my first ever favourite bands!)
Michael Jackson
Klaus Nomi
Madness
Wham!
Depeche Mode
Madonna
Joy Division
And a TON of random cheesy synthpop hits, WOOOO XD

I also watched a bunch of 80's kids shows when I was little, like Button Moon, Postman Pat, Heathcliff, Thomas the Tank Engine, Trap Door...

Ah, the good old days... :wub2:

I just remembered one of my favorite things from the 80s: The original Mario Brothers! Did that game rock your socks or what! My parents have old videos of me and my siblings when we were little and you can see us playing it...lol!

Yes! And jelly shoes, leg warmers, and stirrup pants!

I also remember not being allowed to watch MTV...lol..

I think I remember reading MTV's first video was "Video Killed the Radio Star"!

Depeche Mode

Yes! I loved "Just Can't Get Enough"

I was born in '89, but I remember all of that stuff as I grew up with siblings who were born in the 70s and seemed to be stuck on the 80s throughout most of the 90s. I look at photos of my sister and laugh, because she looks like the typical 80s girl, with the gigantic, poofy hair that she would put purple streaks in, heavy eye makeup and dangly earrings. She had this outfit that is in my closet still and it is a black dress with a fluorescent orange skirt and pink and green braces attached. I remember she used to wear it and would make me dance with her to Michael Jackson and would video tape us on one of those ginormous video cameras. I learned the Thriller dance at a very young age, and played all of the Super Mario games on my brother's Super Nintendo.

Fluorescent clothing! Forgot about that...
I'm now remembering being very scared of Michael Jackson's Thriller video everytime it came on! Even scarier, were those tacky, fake leather Michael Jackson jackets people would wear!

When it comes to music I am a child of the 80s... :blush-anim-cl:

I was born in 1974 and I started listening to pop music (I mean - proper listening) at the age of 10/11. Eurythmics, Nena, Falco, Alphaville, Bruce Springsteen, the Cure, U2... In 1985 I developed a crush on a popstar for the very first time: the victim was Morten Harket from A-ha (I still have a thing for his beautiful eyes). :biggrin2:

In 1989 I found out about Marillion - I mean, I found out that there was more excellent material than just Kayleigh - but I also found out that they had just split up. Bugger. :sneaky2:

OK, what else... Tape recorders, leg warmers, rollerskates (the blue-and-yellow ones - I owned 2 pairs!), me going to secondary school in 1986...

Eighties rock! :punk:

AAAHHHH! The 80's.
Adam and the Ants (yes I could do t he Prince Charming dance, and my nephew was terrified by the video, where he broke the mirror at the end). Loved Adam like I love Mika now. Reading his autobiography at the moment absolutely fascinating.
The Thompson Twins. The first concert I ever went to, was a HUGE fan of theirs, member of the fan club and everything.
Dexys Midnight Runners. again big fan dressed in the dungerees at the concerts.
Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Relax, had the T shirt.
George Michael post Wham, although I did go to The Final concert with my sister, which was fantastic (to quote their first album).
Queen. Another One Bites The Dust still has the best bassline on a song EVER.
Prince, love everything he has ever done, but Diamonds and Pearls is my alltime favourite.

I remember having the worst perm ever in the 80s, although then I thought I looked good (what was I thinking!)
It was when I got my first job after college, and my best friend left to live in Cornwall. Got great holidays from that.
I remember Miami Vice, The A Team, Moonlighting, Peter Gabriels So album, Duran Durans The Reflex, the Brat Pack films (The Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink, St Elmos Fire etc), The Goonies, ET.
Can't think of anymore right now.

Everyone thought perms were good... I remember most of the 80's (I was born in 1983)... Leg warmers and rollerskates I definitely remember... as well as fluoro coloured clothing and shoulder pads... and mullets (I had the makings of one when I was about 5)...

Music was def good!!! :thumb_yello:

Well, considering I was born in 1987, I really don't remember any of the 80's at all. But I love watching I LOVE THE 80'S on VH1 and learning about the amazingness of the decade, so I am definitely an 80's fan! I just wish I was a little older so I could have experienced the magic myself!

Speaking of Dexy's Midnight Runners, they used to live on the same road as my mom :) They all went to the local pub together to celebrate getting into the charts.

I was only there for about 8 months of the 80's but I loooove 80's music. I think I was definately born about 15 yearss too late

I can't believe I forgot The Tube, Jules Holland is a legend. Every Friday night 6pm on Ch4, they were the first show to have Frankie Goes To Hollywood on and weren't they the show that French and Saunders started out on? They had all the best bands on, does anyone remember Belouise Some, he sang "Imagination". He had bleach blonde hair and the video was a bit racey, but they still showed it.
Other things I remember about the 80s, Brookside and Falcon Crest (like Dynasty and Dallas, but set in a vineyard).
I was a big fan of Scritti Politti too, and was sad to hear Green wouldn't sing any of the old songs now, loved "WoodBeez (Pray Like Aretha Franklin)".
And that reminds me (only 'cause they duetted together, Aretha, not Green), Annie Lennox in The Tourists ("I Only Wanna Be With You") and The Eurythmics, both great bands. I wish I hadn't forgotten so much, it was definitely my favourite era, so much fun back then.

RAKI1 - was it you who asked if I was a goth with my black, crimped hair? No, definitely not, more Bananarama!!!!

Brideshead Revisted!!! Cheggars!! (older, and more sleazy now - did you see him on Extras? ) Rentaghost was horrible - the stuff of nightmares.

Why doesn't Green do his older stuff? That really annoys me. Obviously that's what a lot of fans want to hear and there's nothing wrong with that. Sounds a bit pretentious to me.

You all probably won't have heard of the band Love and Money (except scg) - they were an 80s Scottish band and I met the lead singer James Grant a good few years after they had made it big here. I was telling him (in a club) that I loved their album - think it may just have been called Love and Money, but it had Candybar Express on it - and he was rolling his eyes - really rude!!! Then he told me he wasn't a popstar, he was a poet. I literally turned and walked away! Arse.:naughty:

I ran into a video of my favourite Dutch female 80s pop group. May I present to you - The Dolly Dots (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5SsPntDPfgI)! :biggrin2:

Yeh the Dolly Dots,I think I still have the record (LP) somewhere.

I Loved and stil love the '80s music.
pop and popular rock, new wave alsow
I love Madonna then and now.
Then the '90s came along. What a bummer I hated the most music on the radio then.
Not clouseau loved them(group from belgium, you know them bleu) and a few others.
But in general somthing went wrong with music that day's. Stars where created by the music industrie and i really didn't like that.
So I went for uderground house and techno.
Mika reminds me off 70s, 80s and even a litlle bit off the 60 music but all in a verry fresh and new way.
Even the way he dresses reminds me off the 80' the colerfull breclets and the stuf around his neck. I had that kind off stuff too back then.

My fave clothes were those ones that changed colors with your body heat!! Do you guys remember them?? You're shirt would be purple, and then you're smartass friends would have to put their hands all over it and make it pink! So cool! Whatever was in those clothes is probably going to give us cancer one day. LOL!

I am such an 80s girl... Born in 1974 I started listening to pop music when I was 10/11 years old - '84/'85 (Eurythmics, Wham!, Falco, A-ha, Madonna...). I am convinced the best music was made in the 70s and 80s. And nearly all the contemporary music I like reminds me of those days. I guess that is the main reason why I like Mikas music. :naughty:

Leg warmers are definitely back. I saw them advertised a few times lately.

I remember the summer of '84. I remember it very well because I was staying at my aunt and uncle's house for the holidays, the Olympics were on tv and they had cable tv at home (which impressed me, we didn't have that yet). It was quite a hot summer, but I was running around in pink trousers with even more pink leg warmers - I was 10 years old at the time. :naughty:

Born in 71, I'm a true 80's kid...I remember it all very vividly.

Most things (both good like the music, and atrocious like the fashion) have already been mentioned, but I clearly seem to remember getting super excited when the first music videos ("video clips") came out, and when video recorders came out...Also had a few terrible perms, when in fact my hair is naturally wavy already!! Oh and did I mention that I permed my hair but left my fringe straight?:roftl:

:wink2:

I was born in 1981, growing up i remember my sister's big earrings, huge belts and those colourful shirts, also all those sorts of weird hair styles.
I remember also all the great music played around the house by my dad & my brother, Lots of U2, Queen, Depech Mode and the likes.

So glad I've just found this thread... I pretty much love the 80's ... you'd know if you saw my record collection.

I was born in 1974:

First pop star I ever loved was Adam Ant in 81'. Even young I had taste.

Loved Adam between 81-83.... So did the tipex thing as well... much to mum's annoyance... or lipstick later for Prince Charming... and yes I can still do THAT dance... :thumb_yello:

83-85 - Durannie time... Simon Le Bon...

85-87 - A-ha - God how bloody hot was and is Morten Harket :wub2:
Mainly notable cos' this is when my mother seriously started to
notice how into boys I was getting... and I got the birds and bees
story... I still absolutely love A-ha and always will. The first record I
ever bought myself was "Take On Me". Have bought every album
they've ever released since they started. Saw them live in 2003 and
2005. Have to say they were probably the most emotional concerts
I've ever been to. Just simply because I never thought I'd seen
them at all ever.
87-88 - Rick Astley. OK... I thought he was cute... and what a voice.
88-89 - Bros. Matt Goss. Enough said.
89-92 - New Kids On The Block. Major obsession with Jordan Knight.
First concert I ever went to was to see them at Wembley Arena.
Mum thought I was too young for the others.

My music taste's changed drastically after New Kids... Blur etc...

Other notable loves of the 80's.

Davy Jones from The Monkees... OK - Not the 80's but it was on repeat alot.
Dirk Benedict from The A-Team. :wub2:
(My mum bought me an action figure of Faceman for Christmas - My brother was jealous and broke it the very first day I had it - within hours of me getting it)
Christopher Reeve as Superman... Only as Superman though... not as Clark Kent.
Dex Dexter from Dynasty. :boxed: Can't actually remember what he looked like now - but I think he was hot.

I had a disaster with my very first perm. Ummm my mother got abit confused when I kept asking for a perm... she finally gave in and took me to the hairdressers - and gave me a bloody granny perm... :roftl:

I KID YOU NOT... I WAS A LAUGHING STOCK...

I think these vids sums up the fantastic 80's - Great band... Great hair :roftl:

85-87 - A-ha - God how bloody hot was and is Morten Harket :wub2:
Mainly notable cos' this is when my mother seriously started to
notice how into boys I was getting... and I got the birds and bees
story... I still absolutely love A-ha and always will. The first record I
ever bought myself was "Take On Me". Have bought every album
they've ever released since they started. Saw them live in 2003 and
2005. Have to say they were probably the most emotional concerts
I've ever been to. Just simply because I never thought I'd seen
them at all ever.
My story. Except for the concerts, I've never seem them live. But I had a HUUUGE crush on Morten - I was only 11 years old! He is the only really older guy I ever fancied btw. :naughty:

Take on Me was also my first single ever bought. And the album it's on was the first album I ever bought on tape. Still keeping it - for ever and ever. :naughty:

Ow man. Morten has the most beautiful eyes I've ever seen. :wub2:

http://www.aha-fr.com/mortenharket/images/banniere.jpg

On MSN Music there's a live performance (Kiel, Germany, open air in some harbour setting) filmed in 2006, have you ever seen it? They look eh... well-conserved for almost 50 year olds. :wink2:

BTW Speaking of the A-team: all my female classmates had a crush on Face. My favourite was Murdock. :naughty:

Ha, yes I've seen the Kiel concert... Really strange as the crowd is across the water and not really anywhere near them... liked it though...

The last time I saw them they did Living A Boy's Adventure Tale off of their first album..

I have to say It's one of my fave songs ever.... and cos' it's just an album track... I never thought I'd ever hear them play it all this time later... I cried and I'm not ashamed to say it. Could barely belief when they started it and I could hear Morten's soaring vocals... Do you have Morten's solo album.. Wildseed... It was released in 1995 - I think... I love that too... he's supposed to be releasing another one this year... but I've forgot to check when it's out... it's been delayed since January... :(

We need to organise some 80's MFC party online, really, with the best vids, songs and haircuts we can dig up :roftl:

I don't think there were any "best haircuts" in the '80s! :roftl:

But wouldn't an MFC party be fun! :thumb_yello:

In those days Mika did not say Relax, Frankie did !!!!
Oh yes i had a t shirt to prove it!
and short hair with a little bit left at the back

I was out to brunch with my mom and sister the other day, and
a young girl (too young to remember the '80s!)
was wearing a Frankie Says RELAX t-shirt. I just smiled.
A very big smile :biggrin2:

First pop star I ever loved was Adam Ant in 81'. Even young I had taste.

Desperate... but not serious... he was fab, it's a shame how he's struggling
now. :(

Davy Jones from The Monkees... OK - Not the 80's but it was on repeat alot.

No, definitely NOT the '80s! LOL! The very saddest thing is that I remember
the Monkees -- and NOT from them being on repeat :naughty:

And guess what? I'm going to see Davy Jones next week. He's performing
at Disney World in Florida and I have to go down for a day on business
(yes, on business -- yes, AGAIN!). I've seen him there before -- I guess
he lives in the area now, and he performs every year at this time, during
what they call their "Flower Power" concerts. :naughty:

Dex Dexter from Dynasty. Can't actually remember what he looked like now - but I think he was hot.

Yes, he was. I was a big Dynasty fan -- used to go over to my friends'
Mark and Frank's apartment and have big Dynasty parties and try to
figure whose shoulder pads were more deadly -- Crystal's or Alexis'!

Born in the late 60s or early 70s? Then the '80s is surely a decade that influenced you. You may even remember a little bit if you were born in the early 80s...

- Come On Eileen (Dexy Midnight Runners) i love that song
- Tide is High (Blondie) this one too
- Red, Red Wine (UB40) dont know this one

...these were only some of my favourit songs from the 80s.

:wink2:

haha - i know most of this stuff and i was born in 93!!!! haha

Being born on the last day of '66 I remember almost everything mentioned!:roftl:

Wham, Bruce Springsteen (Born in the USA-tour, :punk:), Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Michael Jackson, Live Aid, could go on for hours. Dutch band: Doe Maar. You just had to wear fluorescent pink and green if you were a fan.
http://nl.youtube.com/watch?v=RXWdQGtl6qs

Leg warmers, broad shoulders, a perm, leggings, been there done that. Fame, Flashdance, Kevin Bacon, watching the A-team with my brother.
Mass demonstrations agains nuclear weapons, remember Hollanditis?

I was too young for the actual hype and fandom, I was only 10 when they split up.
