| How do I make a post? |
| When viewing the thread you wish to reply to, click on the “Post Reply” button at the bottom left-hand side of the page. You can also use the Quick Reply option at the very bottom of each thread page by clicking on the “QR” button on any post and writing your message in the text box provided. |
| How do I send a private message (PM)? |
| You can click on the “Private Messages” link in the top right-hand corner under your username, then click on the “Send New Message” option on the left side under the “Private Messages” menu bar, and then fill out the form provided.
You can also find a post by the individual user whom you wish to contact, click on their username, and select the “Send a private message” option to send them a PM. |
| How do I post a new thread? |
| Click on the “New Thread” button located on the top left-hand corner of each sub-forum page. Fill in the “Title” and “Message” boxes and click on the “Submit New Thread” button to post the new thread. |
| How do I search to see if something has been discussed before, or for a post by a specific user? |
| At the top of any page there is a bar with links, at the right-hand end of the bar there is a link titled “Search.” Click on the “Search” link and a “Search Forums” box will pop up.
You can select whether you would like your search results to be presented in the form of the titles of threads that contain what you’re searching for (“Show Threads”) or individual posts that contain what you’re searching for (“Show Posts”).
You can also do an Advanced Search, which allows you to specify more searching options. To do so, click on the “Search” link in the bar at the top of the page, as described above. When the “Search Forums” box pops up, click on the link at the bottom of the box titled “Advanced Search”. This will direct you to the Advanced Search page. From this page you can choose to search by title, which is helpful if you know a keyword in the title of the thread you're looking for. |
| How do I reply with quotes? |
| To quote another post in your reply to a thread, click on the “Quote” button at the bottom right-hand corner of the post that you would like to quote. |
| How do I reply quoting more than one user? |
| To quote multiple posts in your reply to a thread, click on the “MQ” button at the bottom right-hand corner of EACH post that you would like to quote. Once you have done this for all of the posts that you would like to quote, click the “Post Reply” button at the top left-hand corner or bottom-left hand corner of the page. |
| How do I post a link or a picture? |
| To post a link:
When writing your post in the message box, click on the “Hyperlink” button (which is a small button with an image of a blue and green globe) in the Text Editing Menu, then paste the website link in the pop-up box.
To post a picture:
The picture must be hosted on a site that allows direct linking. You can upload your own images to a picture-hosting website such as Photobucket (which you must join to upload pictures into an album) or Imageshack (which does not require you to join to upload pictures).
Copy the URL or “direct link” of the image and click on the “Insert Image” button (which is a small button with an image of a mountain, and is located next to the “Insert Link” option) in the Text Editing Menu, then paste the picture link in the pop-up box.
Alternatively, if you do not wish to use the “Insert Image” button, you may paste the direct link into the message box and write in front of it “”
Repeat this procedure for each picture that you would like to include in the post. Note that each post may include a maximum of 12 pictures (which includes smilies). |
| How do I get an avatar? |
| Starting at the MFC home page, click on the “Account Options” link in the top left menu bar. Next, click on the “Edit Avatar” link in the top-left Control Panel menu. You can now either select one of the premade MFC avatars, or create a custom avatar by uploading it from your computer or linking to an image hosted by you on an image-sharing website. Make sure to follow the regulations for avatar size in creating your own avatar. |
| How do I make a signature? |
| Starting at the MFC home page, click on the “Account” link in the top left menu bar. Next, click on the “Edit Signature” link in the top-left Control Panel menu. You can now create a custom signature for your posts. Be aware that there is a character limit on signatures that includes code or link text. |

| When should I contact the moderators? |
| If you need a moderator to close a thread you’ve started, edit a thread title, bring their attention to a repeat thread, or approve an event posted to the calendar, you can post your request in the Ask The Mod Squad thread in the Members Only section in the “MFC Suggestions” sub-forum.
If you have an issue with another user, want to report an instance of abuse of the forum rules, want to ask whether it is appropriate to post a specific topic or material you think may be questionable, or if you otherwise have a problem that is best not posted publicly, feel free to contact the moderators via PM. |
| Who are the site administrators, and when should I contact them? |
| The current site administrators are dcdeb and
StandardToaster. If you have an issue with the site that cannot be solved by the moderators, you can contact them via PM.
StandardToaster is our technical administrator. Feel free to contact him directly regarding any technical questions or concerns about MFC. |
| What is banning? What is an infraction? |
| If the moderators "ban" a user, that means that user will not be able post on this forum. A temporary ban means that the user will not be able to post for a specific period of time -- a permanent ban is only applied if a user is persistently abusive or otherwise continuously disregards the forum guidelines.
An infraction is a notice applied to a user's account to denote that
they have somehow violated the forum guidelines. You'll see the infraction
in the user profile, with the reason the infraction was given.
In general, we do not want to ban any members, although spammers and those who post pornography will be immediately banned.
In other situations, here are the general guidelines for issuing a ban.
1. If a user violates the forum guidelines, a moderator first sends a warning via a private message (PM).
2. If the user continues to disregard the warnings, an infraction is placed
against the account.
3. If a user receives three infractions, they will be banned from the
forum temporarily, usually for one week.
4. If, after returning from a temporary ban, a user continues their pattern of negative behavior, they may be permanently banned.
More information on infractions and bannings can be found in our Forum Guidelines. |
| Hey, I went to post in my favourite thread and it's closed! What happened? |
| If it was a really popular thread, it probably was nearing 3000
posts, which is the maximum number of posts we'd like in any one
thread -- too many more than that tends to slow the forum down.
When a moderator sees a thread nearing 3000 posts s/he will close
it and ask the originator or an active poster in the thread to start
a new one, and then will link to it.
Another reason your thread may be closed is if it was a duplicate of
another that was already started.
Finally, your thread may have been closed due to an extreme
circumstance such as excessive arguing or sexual content. Contact a
moderator to determine the reason. |
