Despite the wording they kept using on Mika's FB, this was not a competition. It was a fundraising drive and we wanted to raise as much funds as possible for HEMS by opening it up to everyone. We needed them to become members of MFC so we could keep track of everyone and get in touch with them if they won.

Everyone who participated donated money to MFC's fundraising drive to support London's Air Ambulance, which is the important thing. :thumb_yello:

It was a fundraising yes but there is a price by consequenses it was a competition. And If we really want to raise much money without winning ghost members it was not necessary that people be register on MFC in the rules. The London's Air Ambulance could contact the winner because we all let our mail address :thumb_yello:

i absolutely understand that this was a fundraising drive - but it wasn't ONLY that - it was also part of MFC's 5th birthday celebrations..

GREETINGS, MFC'ERS!

As we hinted several weeks ago, we are celebrating the 5th anniversary of

Mika Fan Club a little bit differently this year. :yay:

We had our traditional competitions and giveaways. And

Kath and Silver organized the MFC Anniversary Party held in London

a few weeks ago, with the tremendous auction that raised so much

money for London's Air Ambulance Service thanks to the

generosity of so many MFCers... and Mika, of course! :wub2:

But now, comes the grandest celebration event of all! An event that

allows us to not only celebrate 5 FANTASTIC years

of this wonderful community, Mika Fan Club, but enables us to support

the charity that we have taken to our collective heart!

To celebrate the 5th Birthday of the MFC and to raise funds for the very worthy London's Air Ambulance, Mika is offering one lucky winner a pair of tickets to any Mika Show in the whole world! The prize includes flights from your home country and accommodation for 2 people.

"Mika's fans are amazing and this incredible prize is offered to say thank you for 5 wonderful years of support and hopefully many more to come. We thank you also for supporting the brilliant London's Air Ambulance and supporting the wonderful work they do every day."

so please forgive us for thinking it it was MFC oriented with the additional benefit of supporting a great cause...:teehee:

The London's Air Ambulance could contact the winner because we all let our mail address :thumb_yello:

No, some people didn't allow their email addresses to be viewed by the charity. You have to check a box to make this happen and many many people did not follow the instructions.

In any case MFC was administrating the raffle, not London's Air Ambulance, so we needed to track everyone. The rules were clear from the beginning, before anyone entered the raffle, that there was no registration cut off date for becoming a member of MFC.

I was under the impression that it was a reward for being loyal fan club members and supporting Mika for the past 5 years :dunno:

It's good that we raised so much for HEMS though.

It was a fundraising yes but there is a price by consequenses it was a competition. And If we really want to raise much money without winning ghost members it was not necessary that people be register on MFC in the rules. The London's Air Ambulance could contact the winner because we all let our mail address :thumb_yello:

Actually, that's NOT true, Eva. The JustGiving page did not require you

to make your email address available to us, and many people failed to

tick the box that allowed us to see their email addresses. By requiring

people to register on MFC, we then had their email addresses,

and were able to track them down and email

them their tickets -- otherwise, how would we have found them?

And another thing -- we've had plenty of ticket giveaways where we

required people to be members of MFC to be eligible, and not necessarily

for a long time. People have registered,

gotten the tickets and then we've never heard from them again. It

happens. But a lot of people who have registered on those occasions HAVE

continued to be active participants here -- and to keep the MFC vital,

it's important to always attract new members.

Finally, I'm quite sure that there would be complaints no matter what. If I had

won, for example, I know that there would have been talk that the

drawing was fixed. If someone who had been to scores of gigs had

won, there would have been complaints about that. :naughty:

We're all disappointed that we didn't win, but you know what?

This woman has only *just* won and Mika hasn't even announced a tour

yet! So who knows what will happen? I think we should just thank her for

contributing to the charity drive and congratulate her on her good fortune.

She may join in here actively and once she finally does go to

this show, whenever and wherever it may be, she may come back here

and share all her photos and experiences. Let's hope! :biggrin2:

We ran the raffle and the fund-raising the best way we knew how to do it.

It all went fairly smoothly. We were able to raise nearly £6,700 for a

good cause, and attracted lots of new members, while also getting some

very positive publicity for MIKA and Mika Fan Club. I think that was a win

all the way around, no matter how you look at it. :thumb_yello:

I AGREE completely!!!! I think this is the misconception that is messing with all of us!!! It was stated from the start as part of the MFC 5th Anniversary so of COURSE we all thought this way. NOW only to find out after the fact that it NEVER was 'for us' at all. Kind of disheartening .... :dunno:

I don't get how you can say it was never for us at all. The majority

of the people who participated in the raffle WERE long-time

Mika Fan Club members. It's not like we had 3000 new members

join up and donate hundreds of thousands of pounds. In fact, many

of the new members we attracted the last month came because

of the raffle, but didn't end up donating at all.

This is why we didn't advertise it all over the place, we didn't send out

press releases, we wanted to keep it as "in the family" as we could. And

that's why we insisted that joining MFC was a requirement of getting

a raffle ticket -- so that we could encourage other Mika fans to join

us, and so that the winner would be, if not a past MFCer, then perhaps

a future one. Really, the main reason this was even mentioned on

other websites or blogs at all is because Mika tweeted about it.

Realistically, this was a very big prize with the potential to raise

a lot of money for charity. So while we couldn't limit the raffle to

just the 200-300 active members of MFC, by running it the way we

did, we did limit the pool of participants -- instead of being in a

drawing with thousands of Mika fans from all over the world, you

were able to participate in a drawing for a very cool prize with only a

couple hundred participants. Your odds of winning were really pretty

good, comparatively speaking. :dunno:

I saw that Lui. Oh well. As Mika says: There's always a next time. :wub2:

Obviously, we are all individuals and express ourselves differently, but

I don't think that Christine or Robertina are contradicting the points

I'm making. It WAS a fundraiser. And we wanted the money donated

to be from the MFC. It was not just a reward for a long-time

MFCer. If that's all we wanted, then we would have just had a random

drawing of every MFC member who's been here for 5 years -- and that

would have eliminated a LOT of MFCers, wouldn't it? And I expect that

we would have had some serious complaining about that as well. :dunno:

Seriously... when Christine said "open it up to everyone" she meant "open

to Mika fans who were not MFCers at the time the whole fundraising effort

started." We couldn't limit it to just people who belonged to MFC

as of 1 January 2012, for example -- the prize was too good,

so that didn't make sense. But by

requiring registration with MFC we were doing two things: 1) insuring that

we could keep track of the donors and donations and 2) keeping the pool of

participants reasonable -- rather than the world at large.

I think that if I were Karla, and I came here and saw all the negativity

surrounding my win, I wouldn't necessarily want to become an active

member of this forum. That's why I'm hoping that I've explained this all

sufficiently, and that moving forward the discussion here will center

around expressing positive messages for both the successful fundraising

campaign, and the good fortune of another Mika fan. :thumb_yello:

No I don't think it is. All Mika fans are welcome to become members of MFC. You can't hold it strictly to "thank you for 5 years of support". How many of us have been active members of MFC for 5 years? I haven't. Some members were here 5 years ago and some signed up yesterday. They are all members of the MFC that has been supporting Mika for 5 years.

My sense is that no outcome would have satisfied everyone (I mean people seemed to be rooting for a long time MFCer and someone who had never seen Mika at the same time which is a circumstance that applies to just about no one here).

So I would hope people would be graceful about this, especially when the rules were clear when the raffle started and no one objected to them at the time.

Exactly. One thing is to say that it would have been great if the winner were someone we know. Yes, it would. Another thing is to complain about the rules at this time! Will it be awesome if we have details about Karla's experience? Yes, it will. But it's absolutely silly to discuss the rules now that the whole thing is over - we all knew which were the instructions since the very beginning. Would you all be discussing this if the winner were someone being here since 2007? I bet you wouldn't even remember which were the rules.
