:thumb_yello: Thanks a million for your translation ! :huglove: I think all the discussions and speculations we've had here at MFC, about his "strange" decisions, is answered by MIKA himself in two words: "one changes" :blush-anim-cl: Yes, exactly, that's what we all do throughout life!! Luckily he's a totally normal and healthy young man, who makes other choices and decisions now at the age of 30, than he did when he was 23 y.o. I experience just the same with my own two "kids" - who are at the same age as MIKA, 29 and 31 y.o. It's nothing mysterious about it at all. So in spite of the fact that most of us fell in love with "the old MIKA" seven years ago, we couldn't expect him to be "frozen" in that pattern forever ...:wink2:

I like this interview, and I feel it confirms, as so many times before, that MIKA is a reflected and wise young man - someone I look forward to follow, for a long time yet ...:wub2:

I think you will find this change was forced upon him, by his label not promoting him anymore, and if they were still promoting him, he wouldn't have touched these shows with a barge pole, in my honest opinion.

MIKA already has explained, in interview, that he's fed up with waiting for their goodwill, and green light - and that's why he now wants to take controll of his own carriere ...:thumb_yello:

I'm a bit puzzled.

Someone is saying that he is always the same guy he used to be, someone is saying that of course he's changed. :dunno:

:blush-anim-cl: I thinks MIKA's still the same, good guy - with the same values as earlier - even he makes different choices and decisions, than when he was younger. Times and circumstances change - for all of us. That doesn't mean that our personality is changed ...:wink2:

He had no choice:thumb_yello:he just made the worst decision with these shows, you find you are classed as an has been when asked to do these shows, which I hope Mika isn't, it's just easy money, nothing else.I just hope he can return to what he does best singer/songwriter after this, and gain back his credibility as that artist:mikalove:

I'll say no more:crossed:

What are choices if not the outcome of values and personality?

I have changed. I was more strict back in the day when it came to respect my values, then I grew up and learnt to accept shades and compromises. I am fully aware of money relevance and I'd probably do lots of things to earn more, if I was offered. And yes, my values are so so changed. My personality is different as well. Of course, I can still recognize my young self somewhere in here, I'm not 100% an other person. But I did change.

And this doesn't mean I'm not nice anymore.

Its only brought him positivity in these 2 countries nowhere else, but a lot of negativity from his long term fans, how many of these reality tv fans will be in for the long haul, not many , they will move on to the next piece of hot stuff:teehee:

Mika likes to climb mountains, now he's doing yet another show, he has any even bigger mountain to climb as regards his career.

He's the little prince of pop music. With his heart felt texts , his catchy and sophisticated melodies , his voice as high as the stars, Mika is the true spiritual son of Freddy Mercury. Brown curls, killer smile, the writer and composer with Lebanese roots, thirty years old precisely, released in 2007 his first album and sold 19 million of them. Nothing less. And since then success is glued to his shoes. Outstanding judge in The Voice, fashion lover, Mika accepted to answer our journalist questions over the phone.

*******************************************************

Journalist: What are your first memories linked with fashion?

Mika: I grew up surrounded by clothes. My mother was a clothes designer for shows , then she created her own brand of clothes for children. It was sold in Galeries Lafayette in Paris and at Sacks in New York. She had a small workshop in the apartment where we lived. If I got up at three AM to get a glass of water, I would usually see four people very busy sewing clothes. She took me to my first fashion show in my stroller, I was two years old. My relationship with fashion started early and was a part of my daily life. Right away it dealt with material, textures, colors and shapes.

Journalist: Do you remember the first clothes you bought for yourself?

Mika: I didn't have enough money to buy a jacket or anything big. What's more I cut my t-shirts myself. The only things I could afford were accessories. So my first memory is a Charvet bowtie. That is the ultimate accessory for a man. People tend to think that a black suit is the equivalent of the little black dress in terms of basic. It's not true. The equivalent of the little black dress is the black bowtie. With all its shades, personalities, sizes, techniques, weither it is dull or in glossy silk. The bowtie and its color in my opinion are for me the main element of a masculine wardrobe.

Journalist: You have an unashamed approach of colors in clothes. You dare to mix them, without fearing a clash.

Mika: That's really funny, in commercials today, black is dominant and it is supposed to symbolise punk and rebellion. For me punk is color. I live very close to Vivienne Westwood, close to King's Road. She is a real punk, a fascinating creator whose flag is color. "It's her machine gun!" (In English in the text)

I'm not saying that because I wear color I'm a punk, but for me colors are like melody in music, essential. I'm dyslexic and I can't read notes. I listen to music as I look at colors through an emotional grid. I was always attracted to contrasts and today I understand why. But the harmony has to be beautiful, and the contrast must create good vibes. Or else the result might be full porn.

Journalist: Before talking to you about women, I'd like to talk about your voice which in fact is skilled for high notes and exhales something feminine.

Mika: That's the first time an interviewer will talk to me about women..... I'm delighted. As far as my voice goes, I don't feel things the way you do. When I hear the Bee Gees, the very high pitched voice of the Gibbs brothers remains very masculine. It is the same attitude as with colors: it's a way to show yourself by singing very high, you reveal your sensitivity. That' a form of courage. For example Jeff Buckley or Freddie Mercury even with their amazing vocal range, reaching incredible heights , they don't lose an inch of their masculinity. The opposite is true about Nina Simone. She has a bit of a butch side . That doesn't make her less womanly and she's amazingly graceful.

Journalist: Do you observe women a lot?

Mika: Yes very much so. I pay attention to coherence and contradiction interactions. Women have many more ways than we do to highlight their beauty and to change their appearance more than we do. Consequently they are more prone to fall into the contradiction trap. Which is really moving because it is often in what you try to hide that you reveal yourself. But in my opinion the most beautiful thing about a woman is her coherence. I don't give a damn if she looks young, if she has wrinkles or not, or if she is a fashion victim or not. All I care about is that seems coherent. In that case, you know you can trust her.

Journalist: What sort of women catches your eyes more easily?

Mika: Since I am Lebanese, I'd be tempted to say brunettes. I also like red heads too. Natural, real ones...

Journalist: What is your definition of elegance?

Mika: Elegance is a way to behave, with generosity precisely. I'm not talking about money, but about the spirit. A person who pays attention to you, who talks to you, even if you don't know each other. It is often said that cold beauties are the most elegant. Not at all. Utmost class is to be curious about the other person in front of you. From an aesthetic point of view, coherence, integrity, even if it reaches extremes. I find Yayoi Kusama very elegant for example. Not to mention Fanny Ardant. She is elegance raised to sublime; her figure an her looks are gorgeous , she is warm, extreme, curious, she gets involved and against all odds, she is very much a punk.

Journalist: What type of clothes would you ban from a woman wardrobe?

Mika: Ugg boots. Those type of "inflated" boots that do not fit with anything. It's totally yucky. I'm not crazy about leggings either. Even if people praise them for being confortable, they still look ugly.

Journalist: On the contrary what sort of women clothes would you like to see again?

Mika: When you ask me this question, the image that comes to my mind, is African women. Especially in Seydou Keîta portraits, with their turban on their head, and their myriad of colors. I regret that their influence is not more visible in big towns ' bitumen. The best material dealers in London say that their best clients are African women. Material for her is like jewels. For a dress, they need half a roll, and use kilometers of fabric. This generosity gives a special effect, lots of volume. In fact, I would like to see lots of volume in the streets against the "slim" dictatorship .

Journalist: What perfume do you find irresistible?

Mika: There are three. 24 Faubourg d Hermès, a classic, smelling like honey but not too sugary. Each time I'm in a duty free and I have nothing to do, I go and smell it. Champagne by Yves Saint Laurent which unfortunately doesn't exist anymore. My mother used to wear it when I was a child , that's the perfume of my childhood. Fantastic. And Namluk by Xerjoff. It's easy to imagine Nefertiti wearing it. I collect perfumes and essences. I have, for example twenty four different pure essences of Iris. And also more disgusting stuff like muscs which you are not allowed to use.

Journalist: A voice that moves you?

Mika: Mariza, a portuguese fado singer. Her album "Transparente" is a must. Her voice is one of the most beautiful in the world. And then there's Myriam Makeba. A phenomenon. She sings a duet with Harry Belafonte. "Just one more dance" When I listen to this I'm on my knees.

Journalist: Which woman would you like to invite to a dinner?

Mika: Elsa Schiaparelli.

Journalist: Why?

Mika: Because she looks like a man. (Laughing) And because she is "a terrible child". And if she wasn't available or gone out with Cocteau, I would invite Marlene Dietrich with her little bottle of bortsch. She made her soup herself and she shared it only with men.

Journalist: The woman you wouldn't like to be seated by?

Mika: There are so many singers or actresses that people find sympathetic but who are total twats in reality. It's best not to know them. But since those who come to my mind are alive, I don't want to give names...I will pick one who is dead. And I will say Mme de Pompadour. She was awful. She sent more people to guillotine than anyone. She was powerful, clever, and a marketing queen. She colaborated with François Boucher, her personal Mario Testino. She asked him to be portrayed as an innocent little woman , with pink cheeks, in vivid colors settings with angels everywhere. But she was atrocious in reality and she was frightening everyone. I would not have wanted to have to cope with her at all.

Journalist: What seduces you?

Mika: A person in whose company I forget everything. Success, failures, pressure, competition, the future.... you feel so good with this person that everything else is switched off. You're in a bubble. And as soon as you leave that person, all you have in mind is to see that person again. Lots of women have that power. And even when that moment is over, I feel it releases in me sweetness and tolerance. It's irresistible.

I agree with you. I don't think our deep personality can change so easily. It's more like that we grow, age, learn, experience, have a different perspective... For me he is totally the same as ever even his separate decisions and reactions can be different and are based on different experience than 7 years ago. He still loves music and is full of ideas! I try to think he is doing another season either because he likes (maybe the previous season was a good experience) or simply because he thinks it's useful enough to be worth it or even necessary. If he likes it all is fine. If he is doing it because he needs to I hope it works as he plans. Would I rather take an album and concerts as soon as possible? Well of course!

I totally agree with you. And as for judges on shows like this being has beens, at least in America, I would have to disagree. On The Voice, even though they are not my favorites, Blake Shelton and Adam Levine are very popular musicians, and Pharrel Williams will be in the next season, and you can't get much more popular than him right now.

I can say exactly the same for Quebec, judges on La Voix (and Star Académie before) are far from being has beens...

The more likely scenario, other than he loooooved doing it, is probably that they doubled the money which would make doing another season more lucrative than doing something as silly as going on tour.

Making stupid decisions has nothing to do with whether or not you are a good person. But I am not going to have that discussion as I can put my energy to better use.

I wish him all the best with his choices and I do hope for him that when the album does come out, it won't just do well in France and Italy but also in the rest of the world. But in that case it better be an amazing album and I'll have to hear it before I believe it will be amazing.

I don't know about Garou, Florent and Jenifer's popularity, but they seem pretty relevant to me.

they aren't has beens over here. Florent's been singing for decades and has released a new album.

Last year Jessie J was on The Voice UK, and this year it's been Kylie. So it's not just people trying to get a career out of it, even in UK.

Pharrel Williams will be a judge? I don't follow castings in other countries unless I happen to read news about it so I wasn't aware. He is super popular, I can't imagine him doing it for money. Do people judge him for taking a job like that?

Florent has a lot of very active fans, I've met them. It's same in Finland. Many judges are singers with a good, long career and still doing well. I think it's still different here though, the markets are so small they all do also other projects than singing and need to promote every album well.

I guess that's why I'm used to see that singers do different projects. My favorite local singer does small television projects (not talent shows but actually really good quality ones), writes and does a lot of little collaborations with other artists. Before his latest album (which was a big success and got a lot of radio play) he clearly told how much he wants to concentrate on music/be a singer/perform but that he can do only that many concerts as he is asked and that after paying all costs touring doesn't give him much living at all.

And it's probably same for Mika. Some projects, like television shows, corporate gigs and commercial projects earn him more money and that way he is able to take other, more interesting but not so productive projects and now it looks he needs to finance his new album promoting as well :dunno: As long as he does his work well and lets people see he is a professional, thoughtful and an honest judge he gives a good image. He is charming and fresh in his role, it looks to me people are impressed.
