but it's nice to see that you don't have to waste your time queueing as you have an assigned seat

You should come to South Korea for your next gig, the only country where even the stand up front row is numbered
No queue anymore! Your ticket number determines your order of entrance in the venue... wich means that in absolute terms, you can arrive 3 minutes before the doors open and go in front of everyone
In Korea, the real battle is during the tickets sale to get the right number

i think you meant promo, but that's not what i read

It's funny you mention this, because that's how tickets were allocated to an old UK artist, Cliff Richard, for his shows. I know this as I've spoken to members of his fan club, and they used to have the same problems we do with the queuing, Cliff got to hear about it, and got it organised to do the standing tickets with numbers. It's so simple and brilliant, I don't know why all artists don't do it.

But what if you happen to not be able to get tickets in time, even though you are a hardcore fan? You'd run the risk of being somewhere in the back, just because internet failed/you had to work/ your dog died etc.

I agree.
Even if I had tickets in the first ten (for Kiev cancelled gig) such luck can be only in case if you are going to a gig in your country. If one wants to go abroad, sometimes it's too hard to decide which country to choose, there are a lot of hassle with visas and so on. So such ticket-number system is unfair.

But who gets the good tickets? Is it totally random, depending how internet systems work? Or do you need to have a lot of contacts and friends (buying tickets too) to get a good ticket? Queueing gives most hardcore fans a possibility to be in rows 1-3 (at least at big venues).

But if you took your chance with queuing, you still may not get a good spot, it's pot luck, on how quick you get through the doors, and to the stage. And
with that you have all the added stress of queuing from a ridiculous time, in god knows what weather. At least with the ticket numbering system, you know where your spot will be an you won't end up getting pneumonia queuing up outside!

And what about people who buy a large number of the good tickets and sell them for ridiculous prices on the black market, before any of the real fans can get them?

If they do a pre sale, like they usually do for the hardcore fans, then it shouldn't be a problem.
With Cliffs tickets, the fan club gets first dibs on tickets, so they get the good spots.
