"Stuck in the Middle" explanation

I've owned "Life in Cartoon Motion" for a year and have loved every song on it. "Stuck in the Middle" was always a great song but it was never repeatedly played in my cd player like many of his other songs. I saw Mika in concert last week and absolutely fell in love with this song (If you were in Seattle, I thought it was hilerious when he did the "ba de do ba ba......" and had the audience try to copy and totally fail. He gave the funniest look). It was always one I enjoyed bobbing my head to to the car and humming along but I never really thought about the lyrics. I'm having difficulty figuring this song out. Is it about a girl or a family? He wrote all his songs so does he write about personal experiences (I know "Grace Kelly" is about a personal experience). I've heard awesome things about his family so I'm thinking it must be about a girl. Has Mika explained any of his songs (besides "Grace Kelly")? Thanks!!!!!

Here's the lyrics to "Stuck in the Middle":

I sit and think about the day that you're gonna die,

Your wrinkled eyes betrayed the joy with which you smiled.

Care to see my reason?

Care to put your life in mine?

Lookin' at life from the perspective of a boy

Who's learned to love you but has also learned to grow.

Could we make it better, stormy weather,

So hard to know

Oh, oh, oh - Is there anybody home?

Who will believe me, won't deceive me, won't try to change me?

Ah, ah, ah - Is there anybody home?

Who wants to have me, just to love me?

Stuck in the middle.

I look at you,

You look at me,

We bite each other.

And with your bitter words you kick me in the gutter.

But my troops are bigger than yours

You'll never stand my fight.

Ours is a family that's based upon tradition

But with my careless words I tread upon your vision.

[stuck In The Middle lyrics on http://www.metrolyrics.com]

Are five kids better than one, who'd doesn't like to be gone?

Oh, oh, oh - Is there anybody home?

Who will believe me, won't deceive me, won' try to change me?

Ah, ah, ah - Is there anybody home?

Who wants to have me, just to love me?

Stuck in the middle.

Yea...Yea...Yea...

This is just who I am,

This ain't a greater plan to break your heart over me.

I know that what I've started means that when we have parted

I can live in honesty

Oh, oh, oh - Is there anybody home?

Who will believe me, won't deceive me, won't try to change me?

Ah, ah, ah - Is there anybody home?

Who wants to have me, just to love me?

Stuck in the middle,

Stuck in the middle,

Stuck in the middle,

Stuck in the middle

He hasn't talked about this one; he says he wants to keep the meaning a secret.

Personally, I think it is about his family; he's the third child out of five, he's literally stuck in the middle, and while his family is wonderful, no family is without their arguments. I think it's directed towards his parents; possibly he was a bit ignored in all the commotion of such a large household?

Anyways, that's just my opinion.:wink2:

i think i remember him saying in the muchmusic interview that "stuck in the middle" was about his mother and grandmother and growing up.

personally, i've always thought it had to do with him being "stuck in the middle" of what is expected out of him and his own decisions. like, he is caught between differences of what his parents think/want and what he thinks/wants. the way i interpret it is he is growing up, and like he said in the interview, comes to the realization that parents are people too. like, that sounds dumb, but seeing them in a different more "adult" light. i don't know if that makes sense. but it's just what i get from the song.. especially reading these lyrics:

I look at you,

You look at me,

We bite each other.

And with your bitter words you kick me in the gutter.

But my troops are bigger than yours

You'll never stand my fight.

Ours is a family that's based upon tradition

i've been wondering what the song was all about.the first time i heard it,i thought it was of the same subject as 'grace kelly',but when i read the lyrics i had 2nd thoughts bout the meaning.it's pretty abstract.of all the interpretations of the song,i think yours is quite accurate.thanks for sharing your point of view!it does sound like he's being ignored, just coz he's the middle child.and no,it DOES make sense coz i'm starting to get it.:wink2:
