Dagli esordi imprevedibili con il singolo ‘Grace Kelly’ alla metamorfosi in una superstar ‘acqua e sapone’: ritratto di una nuova icona di stile che è già l’epitome della generazione digitale. La rete è andata in cortocircuito per Mika, il pop singer anglo-libanese, figlio del melting pot culturale di oggi, cresciuto a pane e musica, dalla lirica a Madonna. E, di sicuro, a giudicare dalla sua vitalità di prorompente ‘pifferaio magico’, dal suo look ipervisivo spesso assemblato dalla madre ex stylist e personalizzato dal suo istinto e dalla sua vena anticonformista, Michael Holbrook Penniman Jr. può essere considerato l’erede legittimo del fenomeno Liberace che nell’America di Frank Sinatra riuscì a conquistare le platee. Un parallelismo forse non casuale, visto che nei cinema approda ‘Behind the candelabra’, il rutilante biopic diretto da Steven Soderbergh proprio sulla vita dell’eccentrico cantante e performer Liberace, padre spirituale di Madonna, Lady Gaga, Prince e David Bowie, e interpretato sul grande schermo da un formidabile Michael Douglas. Certo il richiamo viene facile soprattutto quando si parla, nel caso di Mika, di un artista che non nasconde la sua omosessualità, ma Mika è molto meno eclatante e teatrale della star di origini italiane che si avvolgeva in convolvoli di trine rococò e opulente cappe di ermellino con lunghe code che in seguito hanno ispirato Prince e Freddy Mercury. Forse per la sua estensione vocale e quel timbro in falsetto che lo ha da sempre contraddistinto Mika rimanda proprio al grande solista dei Queen ma anche a Jimmy Sommerville, vocalist dei Bronski Beat nonché a George Michael. Ma c’è di più: la definizione migliore, per uno come Mika, è “star della porta accanto” e non è da tutti dare senso a un ossimoro simile. Ma tant’è: lui ha una verve tutta sua che si basa su una naturalezza e una passione gestiti con garbo e disciplina, grazie alla quale in veste di giudice della versione italiana del talent show ‘X Factor’ ha offuscato gli altri giurati da Morgan a Elio. Sarà merito di quell’aria trasognata e positiva che lo fa sembrare un eterno Peter Pan, un folletto elegante e riccioluto. Il fatto è che chi da Mika poteva aspettarsi un idolo bello e dannato di trasgressione peccaminosa è rimasto deluso: in un momento in cui il visionario ‘Slim Slimane’ chez Saint Laurent riscopre lo street style ancora molto hot fra le tribù giovanili californiane e di Seattle e l’estetica rock torna alla ribalta in questi giorni nella moda maschile presentata a Pitti Immagine Uomo, Mika rappresenta un capitolo molto singolare. Pur attingendo, nel suo guardaroba di scena come nella vita, a una ridda di spunti provenienti dalla scena fashion, da Paul Smith a Vivienne Westwood passando per marchi emergenti di casualwear, Mika non è schiavo della moda, ma la detta. I suoi papillon di gusto preppy, i suoi completi colorati da dandy post-moderno un po’ psichedelico, i pantaloni snelli a tubo di stufa, le sneaker di Puma in edizione limitata e le sue scarpe di vernice tempestate di borchie firmate Christian Loboutin, le sue maglie inconfondibili firmate Missoni, le slippers cool di Alberto Moretti, gli smoking di velluto doppiopetto o gli outfit in tartan molto british compongono un’estetica complessa, ricca e polifonica che non è mai studiata a tavolino, ma è spesso frutto di scelte impulsive. Più di una volta Mika ha manifestato il suo desiderio di diventare uno stilista. Swatch gli ha dato un’opportunità con una collaborazione tradottasi negli orologi dai quadranti tribali da lui disegnati con uno stile totemico e molto afropolitan. E per schermare il suo sguardo Lozza gli ha dedicato una linea di occhiali da sole molto speciali. Ma Mika non si lascia etichettare: nella sua visione del mondo la moda fa parte del gioco. In un certo senso il suo look variopinto sembra il risultato di una lunga gestazione che risale agli anni’50 e alla prima irruzione del colore nel guardaroba maschile legato all’ascesa del rock’n roll e a quella che Diana Vreeland definì “ terremoto giovanile”. Si pensi alle prime camicie hawaiiane e al look ‘American Graffiti’ di Elvis ideato per lui da Lanski con i suoi ‘sprazzi di colore cuciti sulla pelle’.
