Last Party - Song and Lyrics Discussion

Me, Melyssa and DerMoment are really digging this new song and thought it would be nice to get the lyrics.

There's a party going on in here

It's been happening for many years

You weren't invited and don't want to stay

But keep partying anyway

DJ's playing the familiar tune

Got them dancing, shaking up the room

They hear the beat but they don't know the words

This is the saddest song I've ever heard

If you could look into the future, would ya?

if you could see it, would you even want to?

Got a feeling that there's bad news coming

But I don't want to find it out

If it's the end of the world let's party

Like it's the end of the world let's party

Wrap your arms around everybody

If we're all gonna die let's party

Let's party

Let's party

Who can I blame with everything I've done

Is this the price we pay for too much fun

Don't be misled it's not a twist of fate

It's just what happens when you stay out late

So raise your glasses all my kings and queens

Smash the chandelier to smithereens

Who knew that mercury could rise so fast

Enjoy the party 'cause this is our last

If you could look into the future, would ya?

if you could see it, would you even want to?

Got a feeling that there's bad news coming

But I don't want to find it out

If it's the end of the world let's party

Like it's the end of the world let's party

Wrap your arms around everybody

If we're all gonna die let's party

If it's the end of the world let's party

Like it's the end of the world let's party

Wrap your arms around everybody

If we're all gonna die let's party

Let's party

Let's party

Let's party

I have a few little corrections in bold below, but basically I agree with you on these lyrics. :original: I'm up in the air on the hear/here question too, as either way could make sense, but I'm leaning toward "hear". Also, at first I thought the mercury reference was to how the mercury in a thermometer rises when the temperature gets hot. But it *could* also be referring to the planet Mercury, since it often rises early in the morning -- he could be saying "who knew morning/the end of the party would come so soon?" But either way, it is definitely "rise" not "ride."

I love the song already!

I think the chorus really makes it work.

I actually thought it was

If it's the end of the world

The last party.

I could, of course, be wrong, especially taking into account the context of the lyrics of the verses.

But it's a wonderful song, whatever the lyrics are.

Thank you for your precious native-speaker corrections girls! I edited the first post.

I was impressed with him mentioning Mercury, because I interpreted it as a reference to the Roman god who runs on his winged feet. Hence why I thought the song said "ride". :dunno:

:thumb_yello: I agree - it's indeed a wonderful new song, and it's already stuck in my head! :wub2: I do hope it will be a hit, and rewarded as deserved. Thank you ladies, for working out the lyrics so quickly!! :huglove: Even I got most of the lyrics by MiKAs very clear performance, it's always great and useful to have the written words ...:fisch:

that's so typical for mika - a song i'd never listen to because it has such dark lyrics, but then a melody that just catches me and keeps playing in my head! :aah::sneaky2: it's gonna be a love-hate-relationship for me with this song. i hate this "end of the world" and "we're all gonna die" rubbish - but i get (positive) goosebumps from the melody, the orchestra sounds, and the word combination "future, would ya" - that bit sounds so beautiful, guess it's the combination of the sounds of these words and the melody. :wub2:

I'm very curious to know how this song came to life, what was the idea that popped up in his head when he wrote such sad words. The music is just heartbreakingly bittersweet...:wub2:

It plays in my head no stop!

I'm curious as well - and maybe MIKA will tell us, like he has done with many of his songs, after a while. When I first heard this song, on the 10th, my first thought was: Oh, MIKA - is it the tradegy in Syria that inspired you with this lyric !? I had to think about all the drama, and terrible things, going on, in among other places Aleppo, where he has both fam. and friends- acc. to himself. As we all know, also Libanon now has a lot of challenges to solve. Whatever it is, this song is a new fav. already - so sad, but so wonderful...:wub2:

It's in my head too. I'm very happy for it to be the first single. I was so disappointed with Celebrate, but this song is so great. I'll be interested to hear the arrangement on the actual single, I loved the arrangement of the orchestra version, even though the sound quality wasn't good (which was understandable because it was a sneaky recording)

Is it really going to be the first single? I thought they would share the video of The last party caught during his performance with the OSM as a promotional thing as they did with Make you happy back in 2012....

Anyway if it is I'm very glad he chose a song which is this catchy and won't stop playing into many people's minds, mind you it's quite sad; if I were him I'd choose something more joyful as first single... :aah:

I don´t think it will be the first single. The newspaper only hoped it would be a Video of this song. We are always too fast to believe everything what is written anywhere and later it´s always Mika´s fault when it´s not true. Mika and Team Mika didn´t tell us anything about the first single until now :wink2:

Agree with you Deb on leaning towards "hear", but hadn't thought of the rise of Mercury to convey morning...nice!

Mamiam, I wondered about that too, Mika's ability to hide the story in plain sight in his lyrics really lets the listener apply his songs to a variety of contexts. Perhaps the current devastation in Syria and the human and political turmoil in that part of the world played an originating role in this song...his story telling intrigues me, it's just sublime.

My favourite of the new songs :wub2::wub2::wub2:

I agree with you Mellody, it's so dark (I cried when I heard it first :aah:) but the melody is stuck in the head immediatly.

I'm very curious to know more about the inspiration of the song too, it must be very interesting. I first thought that he was focussing on the end of a relationship :mf_rosetinted:
