“Stasera Casa Mika”.

"Stasera Casa Mika". The new forms of Imagination

Innovate with a mix of passion, talent, creativity and professionalism "television variety show": an objective fully achieved by the show of Rai2 led by artist and showman Lebanese Mika. In this article a focus on artistic and technical quality of the program: light, set design, directing and design at the service of the viewer

Eclectic, full of energy, evocative in its ability to inspire confidence and tenderness family moments with guests, but also excellent performer with a perfect control of the scene, resolved synthesis of rock dynamism of Mick Jagger with the poetic sensibility of Elton John joined strong theatrical qualities, the character Michael Holbrook Penniman Jr., in Mika art has confirmed a showman in the round “Stasera Casa Mika”.

Over the course of his four-part television program also touched peaks of 14.4% share, first-class results for this kind of format, and the reasons for this are to be sought definitely in product quality, strong authorial work Mika the same with Ivan Cotroneo, Mazzoleni and Giulio Tiziana Martinengo, but also from the unique balance achieved by the technical capacity of the program, with results of absolute visual coherence to the world of Mika and his suggestions and quotations of our various TV history.

To explore these issues we talk with the director of photography Charles Stagnoli, production designer Riccardo Bocchini and director Fabio Calvi.

STAGNOLI CARLO

Backlight and strong contrasts to give presence to the dream home

First, I saw that using white light with an excellent contrast value and definition on the first floor.

How have you structured to these results your lighting system?

Carlo Stagnoli: "The scene of 'Stasera Casa Mika' is a big arena mainly composed of two stages, one of which wound round by the public. Here reigns gigantism; large motorized letters forming the word MIKA, moving on the main stage where other giant objects decorate this hypothetical dream home.

They descend from the ceiling with two-dimensional objects engines and a giant sphere. Two motorized curtains close the two stages. A big heart in wood with a ladder running up the tracks until the center of the stage and around the perimeter of the scene is covered by large Ledwall and video projections.

Working on the stage project plant I seriously considered the clutter of all the objects that would come onto the scene and that they would therefore obscured luminaires: thus is born a layered design so as to achieve as much as possible to each level a good balance between white light and light effect.

120 projectors for tungsten lamps with Fresnel lens 650 W (ARRI), 50 motorized for halogen (Halo 1200 and Varilite 550) 18 Fresnel 2000W, 50 shapers 750W (ETC), 2 followspot 2500W and two follow-me connected to Varilite VL3000, they covered much of the white light, often used to cut. "

One aspect present in the show is the use of the backlight and the top placed against the light, effectively to give depth.

You want to tell you from the technical point of view?

C.S .: "The backlight are mainly of Spot 1200, 48 to be exact, which are also distributed at various levels between the two stages, while another 23 Spot 700 define the orchestra against the public and of some props.

In addition, the sides of the main motor 16 to vertical Ledwall (often prismatic not to veil the image) and used cutting, as well as creating a pleasant effect, I have served to strengthen the depth of the image. A pleasing result was achieved with LED Bar (DTS 'Katana', 12 x 20 W LED Osram Ostar RGBW technology) placed above and at the foot of Ledwall, for a compact backlight.

Even the use of ground LED light projectors (Blade, Proel) has created a strong contrast due to the high efficiency of these projectors.

In the middle stage, behind the large motorized letters, I distributed on an American long 21 moving heads (Robe Pointe) in order to obtain a curtain of light when the letters were offstage, since when the four giant letters entered in the middle He placed around the stage lights behind them appeared blocked.

I have to duplicate this part of the rear lights placed the letters, adding 12 moving head LED light (Ayrton Magic Panel). On the main stage, two concentric circular America have instead hosted white light made with Halo 1200 and Varilite, while 16 motorized (Ruby, Prolight) I have been used to obtain a circular curtain of lights. "

The light and its image, in relation to the colors and set design

In 'Stasera Casa Mika' have accomplished a great task of harmonizing with the mobile colorful backdrop in Mouthpieces LEDwall.

As you moved in this direction with regard to the color and its photographic performance?

C.S .: "I love the color, but in this scene very rich in elements of the indiscriminate use of colored lights would have weighed down and confused the shooting set. I then tried to limit as much as possible the use of multiple colors simultaneously playing together at the same Mika any operation of its program and listening to him exactly what he wanted to achieve in every performance.

In the same way I had a very good working relationship with the designer, incorporating many of his valuable advice. When shooting video, even the calibration of the cameras has played a fundamental role: I wanted very intense blacks and the most devoid of shades possible, this especially on rooms in total, but also for those in the foreground which have been appropriately "shorn" the blacks, so the strong backlight proves becoming evident to all the key lighting effects. "

The use of silhouette and blur effects

Another aspect that has been able to capture in the show is a sturdy construction job picture on the long shots and the photographic definition of choreographic movements. How did you work with light to give shape to this?

C.S .: "I used a lot of backlit curtains.

Mika, who is also the creative director, wanted that kind of photography much thrown in the chiaroscuro, with the use of the silhouette until total elimination - at certain times of the show - the front light.

In the chorus of "white hands", for example, it has opted for a backlit wall that just would reveal the face of the 80 children of the choir, thus getting a picture very delicate and charming, definitely not trivial, important result for so intense piece that hardly forget even for the subject matter. "

Some other items that I saw you used very judiciously were the moving head, the light of the cuts and accent lighting with color conversion filter. Would you talk about?

C.S .: "Yes, I tried not to overdo the use of moving head, which I've used with gobos still fuzzy to get a color base where decisively intervene with some other device illuminating backlight or cutting.

The accent light is in my view a double edged sword: I'd like to be white, but unfortunately almost always mingles with everything else and then is why I opt for the conversion, which helps highlight discreetly ... " .

RICCARDO BOCCHINI

RICCARDO BOCCHINI

Among engines, Broadway, graphics and atmosphere of home

In approaching the task of designing the sets you measured with the need to calibrate a very strong color palette, present in props of the design objects of Studio Job, in Mika dresses and costumes of the dancers. From that basic ideas you left?

Riccardo Bocchini: "Having known Mika at his home in London and traveling to the Peloponnese has helped me to get into his artistic world, surreal, dreamlike and glamor. From these meetings it was born the creative design of the set design which reflected a number of objects provided by the Dutch designers Studio Job.

With my collaborators Flavia Bocchini and Ainur Ramadan we made many drawings, placing them in the television design, along with the graphic of Jasmine, older sister Mika. We started to create the scene without ever stop us on you can not help, finding a synergy and a great combination, despite our age difference: he's a mature young man and I was a mature young man !! "

I think you've used a double register, creating a transverse dynamics of the study area that fits in well with the rhythm of the lineup and directing work. Can you describe your technical choices in detail?

RB: "The design had its crucial moment in the first place in the choice of engines: for the huge letters that reproduced the written Mika, where we inserted before a Ledwall with low number of pixel pitch in the middle, then we applied to the edge LED Dome, to remember the bulbs Broadway; for the heart as it moved from the side to the center of the scene and the circular platform that rose with a sophisticated mechanism and had an edge of circular magnetic Ledwall giving her an important characterization.

Then it was important to the realization of scenic construction created especially with materials suitable for the technologies to be applied, as the huge white lamp completely mapped to 180 degrees, the toaster, or clock, input in reverse shot with silhouettes of other objects cult mounted between projected backdrops with graphics and other equipment. "

How did you interact with the work of director of photography Charles Stagnoli?

RB: "The relationship between the stage and photography but also with the direction of Fabio Calvi moved inside of choices for staged, authorial and choreographic Mika and the success of my scene would not be such if it were not He was expressive synergy with the artist and work synergistically with Calvi, Stagnoli and Carolina Stamerra Grassi who along with graphics of Milan Rai has done an excellent graphic work ".

The intimacy of the house into a large stage space

How have you interpreted in terms of scenic solutions the idea of the authors and requests to reproduce the image of a house, from the point of view of the overall management of the Studio 2000 area of Via Maecenas?

RB: "The winning choice was to realize on the one hand the system with the public gallery with stepped downs, to communicate a sense of intimacy despite the huge study of Via Maecenas, the other place the" Band Stand "in the middle of theater / camper to propose a backlit graphics from Ledwall depicting the image of SGT Peppers cover, stuffed with banana palms and surreal graphics.

The structure was inserted into a circular bottom that also contained the heart, the lamp, the great book, the refrigerator, the cake.

Another relevant factor in the design was the choice made for the first time in that study to have the two columns in the middle of the scene - being able to expand the total diameter planimetric - perfectly masked by a large rocket from one side and by a scale in red spiral on the other.

Enlargement has made it possible to have a very large and important stage space, while recreating the intimate atmosphere of a home.

Another important aspect was the careful construction of the landing simulating the back of the heart as the entry of the house: all these elements together created the interior of the surreal and magical Casa Mika ".

FABIO CALVI

FABIO CALVI

Attention to depth, materials and mixture of languages

In your work the image of the television studio is always very present and often the protagonist as a primary element, and this show it is further confirmation. What you tell us about it?

Fabio Calvi: "My attempt at any job is to accompany imaging content, so I try to find an aesthetic consistent with the basic ideas of the program and with my personal taste.

I always like to look nontrivial perspectives, relationships and strung between people and the space they occupy, with a slight movement of rooms to increase the suggestion and to get more three-dimensionality and depth.

In the case of "Stasera Casa Mika" I tried to use a blend of more contemporary television language with quotes of the great variety of once, a long front, aligned with the viewer's gaze.

Mika has often ferried on this show his world and his audience actually very different in cultural and temporal location, and I think the formula of contamination has also worked formally ".

I think you are very interested in the contrasts made on the first floors and the contribution of light to how it interacts with the characters and with different materials present on the set. Can you talk about this aspect?

F.C .: "Light is essential, as much as his absence. Light as a form of sculpture and painting, with its light and shade, as in life. Without becoming rhetorical've always I tried to avoid diffuse lighting, flat, smooth, full and dominant; it was not easy because television from this point of view has made serious damage; often the drivers are afraid of wrinkles and expression lines and ask for a sea of light without understanding the emotional flattening they face, but it is a bit 'the sign of the times.

Together with cinematographer Carlo Stagnoli we tried to make a directed work here "to take away" by the way with great difficulty as cluttered with furniture scene, video projections, study 360 °, very low ceiling and structural dimensions of the study.

By a task lighting scenes they have always to gain, and many designers are well aware; Also the choice of materials is crucial, I always loved working on reflexes and transparencies or natural materials such as wood, rock, sand, water. "

What assumptions have you worked with the authors of the program for the construction of the ladder-storyboard the show?

F.C .: "The starting point was to understand how to represent Mika's house. The original idea was to reconstruct domestic environments, but we then decided to create a surreal environment, imaginative, with oversized objects, a bit '' Alice in Wonderland ', because the real Mika's house is his imagination, the stage and the relationship with the public.

We then worked with production designer Riccardo Bocchini to create a fantasy world, starting from everyday life to get to the big show, with scene changes in view, an integral part of the story ".

LIGHT AND IMAGE QUALITY:

THE DESIGNER AS ART DIRECTOR AND
THE FUTURE OF TELEVISION PRODUCT

Your point of view on the present and future of quality in television product, relating to the use of new LED technologies and video ...

Carlo Stagnoli: "A few weeks before performing Mika lighting system I wanted to design a study for the first time fully realized with LED light projectors (Editor's note: for 'Said Done' program, also for RAI-2, made in the M3 study ), a bet in all senses because it's undeniable that the white light emitted by an LED light projector is not exactly that of a quartz bulb!

But working (before the age of the plant) with the video control and more variations on the calibration rooms, we were able to get a proper colorimetric curve already in fact the new HD cameras have the ability to "equalize" the curve of this type of sources.

If properly implemented this technology has many advantages, not only in terms of consumption but also regarding maintenance, with very low quality impairment factors. The market appeared different equipment and lighting systems of this type with particular shapes and potential ...

The LED lighting encourages new forms of expression becoming more element of light setting. The large and powerful light beams are still prerogative of discharge lamps ... but the galloping technology, it is just to wait ... ".

In your opinion, in what direction you are heading the search for new languages in the context of television product?

Riccardo Bocchini: "As far as I'm concerned they are always careful to propose designs through technological innovations without neglecting television functional aspects. I personally believe that the new languages will lead to a change in the figure of the designer at least as I interpret the scene.

The production designer is increasingly an Art Director of the image and to this I am moving not without finding any obstacle. With the mappings on the scene it allows COLORIMETRIE and the light to get anywhere with precision, where photography can not reach. "

'Stasera Casa Mika' is certainly a fine example of contemporary TV variety.

How does it rate in technical terms and concepts of the present and the medium-term future of quality given by the language of television?

Fabio Calvi: "I think the Italian television lies close by new means, and effects that are used in large events, yet little exploited in television studios and great image quality that can be achieved with inexpensive rooms, but using optical wonderful film: the dough makes it inherently in my opinion very fake and "plastic" the image of the television studios, especially live.

When can we use new generation rooms and similar optical studies, the results will be amazing. But you have to invest a lot.

In addition, the Color correction has completely revolutionized the way we build the image and photography of the television programs, sometimes making it super glamorous, sometimes making it too digital.

I think that the habit of a certain aesthetic that Instagram and the network propose have affected and will affect the very future of television language ".

THE STUDIO DESIGNER JOB:

OBJECTS GIANTS AND THE IMAGINARY OF MIKA

Studio Job is a famous study of Dutch design, with offices in Antwerp and Amsterdam, whose work is proposed in the most important museums in the world, founded in 1998 by designers Job Smeets and Nynke Tynagel. We asked them some questions, about the relationship with Mika and the work developed for the artist.

Have you realized the concept and design for the stage and Mika tour: what were the points of contact between your research and the design of objects and Mika artistic research?

"We have taken care to Mika on his tour (" No Heaven "), a special concert dedicated to the city of Paris (" we love Paris ") and the TV show. Mika has millions of followers on Instagram; his performances were followed by thousands of fans and the TV show from a few million viewers.

His crew is a traveling circus, and then this is exactly what we feel and think of the work that we have developed together with him. The Studio Job activity is the most developed in the world of art, so it can be said to be relatively unknown to the general public.

Although this is a different scope but in the end the basic principles of our and his work are the same: we're both entertainers and cultural animators, and we want the best from our work, be it for a popular audience as when facing a few " .

In your work the subject acquires a new dimension, which at the same time seems a contemporary way of referring to the ironic game of the substitution practiced by the Surrealists. What can you tell us about it?

"In our work we constantly reference or carry quotes from different art styles to see what we propose to tell. But they are all abstract interpretations.

In some works we combine together the Gothic to the Baroque with Dada with the Streamline style with Pop ... And then there are different nations and continents that interpret the history of art in their own personal way. For us Surrealism term is short for the many messages at the same time. Ours is a fictional non-fiction ... "

As used and considered the light - from a formal point of view and from a technical point of view - in your work?

"Our use of light is never functional - in the sense that, for example, should help to read a book. We see the light as something magical and abstract, but the light is also hope: both are very challenging items to be within an object. "

She Loves Me, présenté l’année dernière à Broadway.
