Anything else is up to our interpretation (and doesn't necessarily make sense - what a pun!) I would reckon for myself that it could deal with certain generation gap caused conflicts within a big family in general. But you don't really have to read between the lines to come to that conclusion. Besides I think that the same song can have as many meanings as there are people listening to just because everybody has a different background of experience..... For some reason when i listen to the lyrics i get the interpretation it has to do with a family member. Its just my opinion and i could be wrong that since he doesnt talk about his dad much that maybe its based about some conflicts he has with his dad? Dont quote me on it but its just a thought. I have got my own ideas about its inspiration, that's to do with our boy himself, but (hence the above) I'm not gonna share it. in any case, this song's a TRUE masterpiece. got to be my fave song ever (sharing 1st place with other 2, not mika's, old loves of mine). My interpretation of this song is like this: I think about it like a conversation between a parent and a teenager in a really close relationship. You don't want to hurt each other, but you do sometimes, because you are in so different places in your lifes and with very different goals at the time. I could have had this kind of conversation with my mother when I was growing up. But this is only how I like to think about it. And a fan-club for this song...I'm in!!
