  3. thelondonpaper by Thomas Atkinson. Monday, May 14 2007 While it has given us such delights as 4 Non Blondes, Mr Oizo and Joe Dolce, the term “one-hit wonder†must be one that wakes every pop star in a cold sweat from time to time. It says a lot for the sheer self-confidence of Mika then that he is as happy to mention the term in reference to himself and his debut single Grace Kelly as he is to discuss his favourite actresses (for your information, he’s less than impressed by Sienna Miller). “I wasn’t really afraid of that label because I worked really hard to make sure that we had an album full of good songs and not just one or two strong ones,†he says. The boast has been backed by the success of his second single, Love Today, a more dance-orientated but no less falsetto-laden follow up to his first, which now sits atop the UK’s radio airplay chart. “It’s been getting a fair amount of radio play,†he says modestly. “So, hopefully this one will prove I’m not a one-hit wonder. I don’t think it can have the same kind of impact as Grace Kelly because that was the first time people had heard me and now they will know what to expect a little more.†Mika’s vocal style is so unique among the current crop of male singer/song-writers that it can be called the musical equivalent of Marmite – you either love it or you hate it. Again, the singer is confident enough to recognise this – and even add his own pet pop hate. “I can’t remember the name of it , Calvin Harris?†He is of course referring to Acceptable In The 80s. “I’m a bit tired of that one, although I suppose only in the same way that people might be sick of my first one.†It’s this kind of honesty that makes Mika such a refreshing presence in the pop charts but so far he has been reluctant to talk about one thing – his sexuality. “I don’t think people will ever stop asking but it’s my life and I’ll live it the way that I want to. I don’t see why I should have to discuss everything. It doesn’t bother me but it confuses me because I wonder why they should care.†While whether he is or he isn’t has drawn plenty of column inches, it’s other headlines that have made Mika chuckle, such as “Mika uses Freddie’s pianoâ€, suggesting he insisted on Freddie Mercury’s piano for recording. “That one’s partly true but I did not have it flown in like they said,†he says. “It wasn’t even actually his, just a session piano that he had used a couple of times.†The headlines may sometimes be wide of the mark but one thing is for sure, with all this attention there’s little danger that Mika is going to be a one-hit wonder. *************************************** mentioned in anther thread, but thought I'd post the full article as the pic is fab
  4. ooo was lovely to see everyone tonight!.. saw lots of flashing hearts everywhere!.. It was a great night though I must say that I enjoyed koko more... there were lots of kids around and way too much pushing and shoving.. was NOT nice.. people just dont get the message when my elbow is digging into their ribcage!! Tink and I was trying to prevent this little kid in front of me from getting crushed and he couldnt see anything most of the time (he seemed to have a great time at least)!! We created a wall as some cheeky people were trying to push their way to the front to get to 'their friends' (a likely story!!) we didnt have any room to move anyway!! Was supposed to be on the guestlist.. but staff at sbe were rubbish so just went home I will cherish my Koko night (can't win them all!) My friend has some cracking photos.. will get them from her tomorrow night and upload asap! Night all xx
  5. I've been so busy.. I dont have a crazy outfit.. will have to do better for Somerset House!!

  7. Radio review Tuesday May 8, 2007 The Guardian The Big Weekend Takeover on Radio 1, in which bands and performers replaced the usual weekday line-up yesterday, once again reminded us that making good radio isn't anywhere near as easy as it sounds. The Kaiser Chiefs, or at least Ricky and Nick from the band, filled in for Jo Whiley. They opted for an on-air shambles, complete with errors (it wasn't "the hairy cornflake" who used to do Our Tune); nattering over the start of tracks; features that didn't even begin to work (no celebrities called for their celebrity phone-in, only a weak Sharon Osbourne impersonator); plugs for a friend's antique shop; and nasty asides about the music of some fellow bank-holiday stand-ins ("close your ears, it's Natasha Bedingfield"). They were, in their predictable rock'n'roll way, at least more likable than Mika, who followed them. Taking the notion of self-promotion rather too far (he played three of his own tracks in an hour), and blessed with an annoying entourage, the broadcast proved that a little bit of Mika goes a very long way. ***************************************************** I loved that the whole gang were there!!... boo to The Guardian!
  8. General Admission usually means its a free for all!.. So get there early and grab a good spot!!...
  9. No Probs..... I dont have an outfit for Shepherds Bush.. I am so busy over the next couple of weeks.. I wont have time to sort one... I know that Jemma is going to be a fairy.. what is everyone else going as???
  10. LOL Shepherds Bush is west london.... Fenchurch Street a train station not far from Liverpool Street (train and tube) and both are in the City of London (more east) Here is a map... there are no grids on this silly map so...... Liverpool st and Fenchurch st are east (near the right hand number '1') and Shepherds bush is west (near the left hand number '2') Jemma can take the Central line (red line) all the way to the Bush Caz can take the circle line (yellow) from Tower Hill (a short walk from Fenchurch St) and change for the Central line (red) at Notting Hill Gate to get to the Bush. If in doubt use the TFL Journey Planner.. its very good Hope that helps!!! mei
  11. I still have 4 tickets.. so yes I am going... will be dressing up for that one.. not had time to get outfit sorted for Shepherds Bush.....but I have flashing hearts and other glowing items for that one!! Its going to be great!! I will definately be planning on visiting the art exhibition..if that's what you mean.. hehe...it's so great to be living in London.. I love my home town!!
  12. It's infuriating.. as you would think with all this whizzy technology, they would be able to detect that you already exceeded the limit at point of sale when you attempted to buy more.. but that would be common sense wouldnt it? They took the money for the tickets!! Thats's over £200 of mine that they have had hold of for the last 2 weeks!! *sulks* now I am worried for my Live Earth tickets.. also bought through them
  13. Have just noticed the new posters for Capital Radio in and around town. They show different views of London and subtly incorporate artist/band names... one of them is the word 'Mika' on railway tracks (probably at Kings Cross, Euston one of the other main rail stations) From what I have seen they have only done this with 3 bands/artists including Mika, The Kooks (over a view of Hype Park) and Killers (London Skyline).. check them out here Probably not very interesting, but I guess it shows Capital FMs support for Mika! can you see it? It took me a while staring up at a billboard to be sure it said 'MIKA' !
  14. Arrg.. where did it go?!! Try again!! plus some extra ones.. just for you Freddie!!
  15. there there dear hubby.... *pats gently on freddies back* we all know which way Perez swings... I think Cherisse would be looking for a real alpha male!! here's fab pic to cheer you up!

  17. I was in such a hurry to get tickets for me and my friends at the time that I didnt see that there was a strict 4 tickets per household!!! I have to tell 8 friends that they can't go now Ticketmaster wrote to me and has cancelled those tickets and issueing me a refund! Was only trying to help them get tickets.. sigh I didn't think it would be a problem as I did 2 transactions on seetickets for Shepherds Bush... darn ticketmaster...

  19. Mika the man, the myth, the music May 2, 2007 Tonight By Guy Adama Take Freddie Mercury without the handlebar moustache;throw in equal dollops of Elton John, Robbie Williams, and Scissor Sisters; garnish with matinee-idol looks and the lyrical dexterity of a young David Bowie. The result is Mika, a London-based singer who has appeared from nowhere to go straight to the top of the charts. He’s charming, he’s 23, and if you believe the hype, he’s the biggest thing to hit pop for a generation. In Britain, the Beirut-born prodigy has been signed up as a "face" of Paul Smith and is about to embark on a sellout tour. He’s done Jools Holland, met Cat Stevens, and recently received an unsolicited piece of fan-mail from a certain Brian May. Like any new pop sensation, he is about to enter the international celebrity stratosphere. He is the official biggest thing since…well, since the last big thing. Yet, for all the praise now being heaped upon him, the curly-haired singer is no ordinary plastic pop-poppet. He was trained at the Royal College of Music, plays piano like an angel, and writes and produces all his own songs. In an era of mass-market bubblegum pop, the boy is like a sore thumb. He’s also delightfully eccentric, with a bizarre transatlantic accent, a polysexual persona, and a bizarre outlook on life (as detailed on his Internet site). "In the past four or five years, we’ve been force-fed a strict diet of stars who don’t write their own material, can’t play instruments and hardly ever play live," said Mika’s manager, Iain Watt. "As this number one shows, he’s different, the real deal." The singer is also cocky and opinionated. He boasts the most colourful of life-stories, and despite having struggled for almost five years to break into the music industry, is described by one recent interviewer as "so confident it’s frightening" Mika’s mother pulled him out of the educational system, and allowed him to study music. He developed into a child singing prodigy, performing at the Royal Opera House and singing advertising jingles as a teenager. "His demo was originally pitched across record companies in the UK, and was completely ignored by them," said Watt. "So he went to Miami to continue working on songs and when he was over there he met a management company, Fuerte." They brokered a deal with Universal Records, and decided on a softlysoftly approach to launching him. A mini EP, Relax/Take it Easy, was released in August 2006. The result has been a more-or-less overnight sensation, helped by Mika’s sensitivity to the multi-media revolution in music. His Myspace site, which has received almost a million hits, showcases a cast of fictional cartoon characters that appear in lyrics of the debut album. He is often compared to poly-sexual acts such as the Scissor Sisters, and likes to keep his sexuality ambiguous. "He’s kept his private life private," says Rice. "We asked him early on whether he wanted to do that sort of ground in interviews and he said he’d rather not. But he’s friendly about it if it gets raised in an interview, rather than defensive. He is single, though." Another friend says: "He likes artists such as David Bowie, Mark Bolan and Prince, and one reason is that he likes their sexual ambiguity. Like them, he likes not quite spelling things out. I think he wants to keep people guessing." – The Independent *************************************** Article looks/sounds familiar.. but couldn't find it on the forum.. so here you go!! Go Mika!! Taking the world by storm!!
  20. Life In Cartoon Motion - Mika May 2, 2007 Tonight By Yazeed Kamaldien Universal Rating **** Happy-go-lucky boy pop. A Lebanese-American refugee named Mika Holbrook Penniman fled from his birthplace, Beirut, to Paris for better days. Education at a snazzy music school ensured performances ranging from opera to pop music. Now called Mika, he has unleashed a debut album via London recording studios. The opener, Grace Kelly, is the first single and its quirky sing-along lyrics are delivered with a fun, high-pitched chorus. Mika sings in the opener: "I tried to be like Grace Kelly. But all her looks were too sad. So I've tried a little Freddie. I've gone identity mad!" It's immediately uplifting. Overall, the sound is reminiscent of Robbie Williams and Mika has also been likened to Freddie Mercury. He still has a long way to go before reaching the magnitude or commercial success of either of these two artists, though. Charismatic deliveries include Any Other World, a sweet tune that exhibits angelic backing vocals. Big Girl (You are Beautiful) is an homage to slightly more than curvaceous girls. Musical influences include early dance, disco and '80s pop. The kids are gonna dig this.
  21. Mancheseter Evening News Mika - Love Today (Casablanca Records) Mike Caulfield 1st May 2007 3/5 stars WHETHER or not you liked Mika's chart topping debut Grace Kelly, you can't dispute it impact on every sticky disco dance floor up and down the country, filling the good time void the Scissor Sisters neglected with their underwhelming latest disc. Unsurprisingly for someone that used to write jingles for a living, Love Today is infectious, from its faux-disco infused backbeat to the curly haired ones glass-shattering vocal flights that can crack even the most hardened music snobbery shell. And for those who love a bit of flamboyance in their radio hits or ringtones Love Today will most certainly leave you dizzy with good vibes. As with Grace Kelly there very little happening beneath the surface that will trouble any musicologists, put simply this is dumb-but-fun pop. Released on April 23.
  22. Yaaay!! Sivan!! I told you he would remember your name!!! Sounds like you had an awesome time!! He's told 2 of us that he will write letters back to everyone in the scrap book!! Take your time Mika!!
