Mika: 'Relax (Take It Easy)'/ 'Lollipop'

Released on Monday, December 31 2007

By Alex Fletcher, Entertainment Reporter

Mika has just about got away with it. Despite releasing a bagful of mega-cheesy pop anthems and selling an even bigger bagful of albums, he's retained a faint dash of credibility and made most of the broadsheets' artists of 2007 lists. Both sides of his double A-side single 'Relax (Take It Easy)'/ 'Lollipop' illustrate perfectly how the floppy-haired, Lebanese-born squawker has pleased pop-pickers and cool evaluators simultaneously.

'Relax...' is the sort of thing George Michael would produce if he was still making decent records rather than getting in trouble for smoking dodgy cigarettes and waffling on about politics. With a gentle dance-beat layered underneath an unusually sedate Mika vocal, it's half Pet Shop Boys-esque electronica and half Scissor Sisters-style uber-camp dance anthem. 'Lollipop' is the other extreme, with candyfloss-sweet pop melodies and more high-pitched Mika vocal action than should be allowed by Government law. It's intensely irritating, but, for people who like their tunes 'big' and camper than Dale Winton in a Carry On movie, it will be a rare treat.
