Courtesy of Universal Music Music superstar Mika passed through Vancouver on his recent tour and Kidzworld was lucky enough to be there! Check out the review. Starburst Mika burst onto the music scene with massive hit Grace Kelly after leaving the Royal College of Music to record his first album. With his flamboyant performances and catchy falsetto, Mika was quick to gain legions of adoring fans across the world. After selling more than five million copies of album Life in Cartoon Motion, Mika set out on a North American tour after performing all across Europe in 2007. On February 15th, 2008, Mika played to a packed house at the Orpheum Theatre in Vancouver, BC on his Dodgy Holiday Tour before heading back home to London. Mika is one of the music world's best new talents and is currently working on his second album due out in late 2008. Midway State opened for Mika's Dodgy Holiday Tour. Courtesy of Univeral Music The Midway State A great new band from Toronto, ON, The Midway State opened for Mika on his 2008 tour. They have toured with Evanescence and Daughtry in the past and blend rock, piano, and soulful vocals. Many of their songs, including Unaware, which was featured on The OC, Change For You, and A Million Fireflies start out softly, with afro-ed singer Nathan Ferraro crooning over the keyboard, and then rock out once the rest of the band joins in. Daenen Bramberger is boss on drums, Mike Wise plays a great guitar and adds backup vocals, and Mike Kirsh supplies a mean bass. Add this all up and The Midway State gave an incredible live performance for an opening act and definitely gained a ton of fans during the tour. Look out for some big things from this band when they release their first album later this year and then star in their own tour! The Main Attraction After a little break to set up, Mika took to the Orpheum's stage and lit it up like an exploding box of crayons. He opened with Relax to strobing blue lights, a spotlight, and a shadowy silk curtain as he wore tight pants and a shiny blazer, perfectly matching his young fans who were super stylish and looked like they were sponsored by American Apparel. The concert was fantastic and never let up, featuring plus-size burlesque dancers and a huge blow up doll during Big Girls are Beautiful, an incredible shirtless drum-off against his drummer, a snowstorm where he sung under an umbrella, and a ten foot tall Skeleton to mention a few big moments. Every once in a while he tried to slow it down at the piano, like for Billy Brown, but it wasn't very long before he was up on his feet and barely able to contain the energy. The crowd was so into it and sung along all night, especially during Love Today. Finally, after playing all of his other hits and a few songs he only performs live, Mika drove everyone crazy with Grace Kelly, almost blowing off the Orpheum's ornate, golden roof. But that wasn't it, for the encore the band came out in furry animal suits and put on a naughty little play entitled Bad Bunny before the sky opened up and rained buckets of confetti and huge colored balloons onto the audience. As Mika finished Lollipop, hundreds of young fans climbed onto stage and surrounded Mika adoringly as he finished. It was a perfect moment to close out a truly unforgettable live performance. lollipop_monkey Posted March 15, 2008 Posted March 15, 2008 Thanks for posting! Hehe, American Apparel. He says that its Mica Penniman, but other sources say it's Michael Holbrook Penniman. I think legally he's Michael, after his father - on his birth certificate, medical records, etc. But, I think he's gone by "Mica" his whole life - he would have been called that in school, during his early opera days, etc.
