GaGa still tops Europe charts

18/04/2009 - 12:29:38

Rockers Depeche Mode have failed to knock Lady GaGa from the top of the European singles chart - 'Poker Face' is still the continent's most popular song.

GaGa continues her reign for the eighth consecutive week, with Depeche Mode's latest release 'Wrong' only managing to enter the chart at four, followed by the only other new entry in the top 10 - Scottish dance star Calvin Harris' 'I'm Not Alone' at five.

Rapper Flo Rida remains unmoved as 'Right Round' sits at two, and Enrique Iglesias' duet with Ciara, 'Takin' Back My Love', stays put at three.

Meanwhile, U2 make it seven weeks atop the European albums chart - 'No Line On The Horizon' keeps Gaga's 'The Fame' in second place and 'Quiet Nights' by Diana Krall in third position

How Did Lady Gaga Become Lady Gaga?

Posted Wed Apr 29, 2009 10:46am PDT

I am defying all preconceptions we have of pop artists. That's how 23-year-old Lady Gaga sees herself.

But how did the Grammy-nominated singer go from brunette Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta to preconception defying, flashy dressing, platinum blonde superstar Lady Gaga?

Germanotta was born in Yonkers, New York, where she attended a private Catholic girls school, wrote her first piano ballad at age 13, and then won early entrance into New York's prestigious Tisch school for the performing arts.

But Germanotta needed to strike out on her own to become Lady Gaga. She ditched school and threw herself into New York's Lower East Side music scene as a naive, convent-educated teenager.

"I went against all I was brought up to be; I moved out of home, wouldn't take any help from my parents [her internet entrepreneur dad and his business partner wife], and supported myself with waitressing jobs and stripping," she said. "I discovered a real personal freedom through it."

It wasn't long before Germanotta's talent for writing hook-laden melodies came to the attention of major record labels. Just 20, she wrote hits for the Pussycat Dolls, Britney Spears and New Kids On The Block.

But it was while working with producer Rob Fusari that she got her attention-grabbing stage name. After noting that her singing voice sounded like her hero, Queen's Freddie Mercury, Fusari named her Lady Gaga for the Queen hit "Radio Ga Ga."

While her provocative burlesque pop act Lady Gaga and the Starlight Revue was a hit in Manhattan's downtown nightclubs, mainstream showbusiness was nonplussed. When she showed up for auditions with labels and musicals, the usual reaction was utter bewilderment.

"A lot of record labels thought I was too theatrical," she said. "Then, when I auditioned for stage musicals, the producers said I was too pop."

Finally, it was rapper Akon who recognised her singing ability and got her a major deal.

And the rest is Gaga history.

Thanks. :thumb_yello:

I read that it was after she sang 'Again and Again' to him and I have no problem believing it... However, in a picture you recently posed on another thread she is basically dressed like Freddie Mercury with the braces etc, and I also saw some Queen inspired record cover from her on Youtube.....To cut it short, she is basically a Queen fan and I don't think Rob Fusari was the real originator of this name.

Yep, that makes a lot of sense.

Can I ask you guys something? And I mean this in all sincerity, not trying to be condescending or snarky, I honestly want to know... what is it you like about her?

And I would also love to know :wink2:

I think it's mostly based on her singing :wink2: And also the catchy tunes (obviously this isn't intended on everyone) and that she can play a musical instrument. Just a hunch though. That's why I like her.

Well, I have only just started listening to her, and some of her songs are great. But more than that, I think she is actually an interesting performer...and she loves her MUM!!

The thank yous on the end of her CD show that for all the front she puts on, she has a very strong family base, and I don't know why, but I really really like that. :thumb_yello:

I really like her too!!

Just Dance was a very refreshing song and so 80's influenced, i love all the new electronic music ...

I think she is a great performer too and her live shows will be amazing!

A bit different and ok quirky and cookie but fun!

I think nothing that different from what Madonna was doing about 20:shocked: years ago really!

Her album The Fame is really good.... i love it loud in the car anyway when driving round:biggrin2:

I thought J Ross interviewed her really badly actually, i've seen her with Sarah Cox and others and she was much better, ok she does her acts drinking tea and all that stuff but hey why not!! The world needs characters like her i think! Thanks for vid BS

Just thought you guys would be interested to know that LGG was on Rove Live (An Aussie tv show... sort of like Letterman, if you've seen it).

She chatted to Rove, and also performed Lovegame... which was pretty good except for the screaming fangirls...

There's nothing on the website yet, but here it is if you want to check it out in the coming days as there might be the interview, plus her performance and behind the scenes stuff:
