silver
Your 13 ... phew... mmmmmmmm I thought I had it ... I have the logic of it I think you're on the right lines FD - it's just working out the lengths of the sides of the small triangle.

Im just grateful you're helping I think you're on the right lines FD - it's just working out the lengths of the sides of the small triangle. And how ya gonna do that ? FREDDIESDOUBLE
Ok so the small triangle satisfies the right angle triangle rule a(squared) x b(squared) = c (squared) We have an area of 5cm (squared) The area of this triangle is 1/2 b x h It almost as if we need a length of one of the sides too Sorry its getting late and my brain is fried The key .. is getting the lengths of the sides , sowwy:boxed:

Ioana
Ok,here's how you solve, if I remember the nice math laws from 10 years ago Now,both trangles have 90degree angles, therefor their surface is equivalent In right angled triangles the surface is (this case) PR x RQ / 2 now as you know that surface of STU is 5 cm then you have SU x TU /2 =5 so it would be PR/ US = RQ/UT = PQ/ST Just use the TQ = ST/2 ; UR = TU/3 and SP= SU/4 and SU x TU/2=5 now Like PQ is the hypotenuse, and Pythagoras says the hypotenuse is....? Put the right letters to each UR is a cathete (is that the name? ) in UPR ,so again,Pythagoras,to write PR under a different form PR being hypotenuse here SP = SU/4 and SU is 10/TU and soooo on Apply your school knowledge, use the 3 sizes you know, put them in the formula above, simplify them til you get just few sides and you will be left with a number in the end, just calculate some easy things I'm a tad lazy for it Edited November 7, 2008 by Ioana
