My get-a-way when I want to escape the 'real world - or virtual one' THE oldest city and port in the Continental United States founded: September 8, 1565 It is also one of the MOST haunted places in the world..... the history here is as thick as the atmosphere -- almost like being in another dimension, or place in time. Even though it is a 6 hour drive for me, I go here as often as I can -- but - not near as often as I would like! Here are some places there ----- The city gates - there is a feeling in the air as you walk through them, even if it is the hundreth time. They look pretty much JUST as they did over 400 years ago. We are known for the pies here:thumb_yello: No, I didnt know Tiel flooded:blink: We also have a Floriade in Holland:naughty: Somehow I missed this post. I think I would like your town. I LOVE pies. And I know that Holland is world renowned for its tulips and that you probably have festivals, but I thought I'd put our Floriade in too, cos most of the world DOESN'T know that we have one. chickadee Posted January 21, 2009 Author Share Posted January 21, 2009 Yes I've already been on this road four times... it's quite impressive but when you're on, you don't really realize that you're so high, can't see anything one time it was like the first pic, there were just clouds/fog aroud us... you have to stop just before the viaduct or be in the valley to realize everything And yes it's pedestrian access only, and there's lots of café around and terraces, very pleasant also, the feast of lights in Lyon, never been at that feast, anyway, find it's great That is quite something. I love the mix of the old (the architecture) with the new (all the coloured lights). It just works so beautifully. And the last picture... It reminds me of Botticelli's "Birth of Venus" but there's too much hair... I'm not very artistically knowledgeable, so can you put me out of my misery and tell me what it is please? But its also nice to be in the city in no time.I can't upload pictures!!! Photobucket is not my friend at the moment! I originally come from the north of Holland, from a place called Veendam, thats about 30 km away from Annemariepetra I moved to the west because of my husband, he lived here his whole life. In the west of Holland there is much more activity than in the north. Much more and bigger companies. I love living close to Amsterdam, with its beautifull canals and buildings. Also interesting is ofcourse the Anne Frank House! And ofcourse Amsterdam is most famous for the Coffeeshops (don't think they even sell coffee:naughty:) and the redlight district. I feel your pain. Photobucket periodically hates me too! Well there you go. The Anne Frank House. Is it a museum about her? Are the coffeeshops more famous for pastries then or for something else? Maids from the maid cafes in Akihabara, electronics mecca of the world and my favourite vid of Tokyo monuments and landmarks... Edit: you didn't want temples and gardens did you? Oops maybe you did.... What on earth is a maid cafe? All I remember about driving through France almost every year when I was younger was sitting in traffic in Millau for hours It's a bit pointless to post anything about London I think because I'm guessing most people know the landmarks already... But I don't know all the landmarks! I've never been there. I know some of course... Buckingham Palace, The Tower Bridge, Big Ben, Nelson's Column, Picadilly Circus. That's about it. Yes... it is the oldest city in the continental United States so there is a definate feeling of 'old' and historic in the air. This is the place where Ponce de Leon found the 'supposid' Fountain of Youth. I drank water from it... but, I am still aging I have never been 'into haunted places' so I am going to have to say that it is JUST St. Augustine for me!!!! People in the governement have made a law that coffee shops can't be in 250mtrs around a school. But otherwise they are allowed to exist. The Anne Frank House is indeed a kind of museum. It is the place where she and her family hid in the war for the Germans. It is called Het Achterhuis, the behind House..(?) It is an appartement with a few rooms hidden behind an office. Colchester is one of Britain's oldest recorded towns... it was also the capital of England before London was.... a very very long time ago The castle was ordered by William the Conqueror, designed by Siward, Bishop of Rochester, it's a Norman Castle and was completed in the year 1100. I can't remember who showed you pics of Hampton Court Flower Show... but I remember going to the palace for a school trip when I was 10... Hampton Court Maze .... I remember getting completely lost in it when I was 10.... I was scared I wouldn't ever get out and I'd miss my bus home.... thankfully someone came and found me.... My fave place in London....
