You remember how much you hated 'Comfortably Numb' when Scissor Sisters released it? How silly did YOU feel when you realised they were actually one of the greatest pop acts to smack your audibles? Quite. This is why you should trust us on this one and accept that Mika is the greatest solo pop artist (yes, artist, he's lived in Paris which makes it so) you'll hear in the next year. This gig is a bit of a cheat really as it's actually a showcase for music industry suits to be seduced over to the delights of Mika's impossibly tight red jeans and towering falsetto. We get a choice of drinks and chicken and chips in a bucket, it's that classy. Kicking off with the gloriously slinky recent single 'Relax, Take It Easy', Mika and his band show off six of the best pop songs you could hope for. From the disco-house of ‘Relax’ (complete with Jake Shears squabbling with Freddie Mercury vocals) to the comic English vaudeville caricature of ‘Billy Brown’ who leaves his wife for another man, it’s easy to see why his forthcoming album is called ‘Life In Cartoon Motion’. Mika’s world is big and fabulous, dropping into other people’s lives like a sherbert dib-dab and brightening them up with rollicking pop sensibility and delicious lyrics. “I wanna be like Grace Kelly, but her looks were too sad,” he whispers on, you guessed it, ‘Grace Kelly’ before embarking on a warbling list of colours he could be instead. Tonight, he plays a gig at The Reindeer in The Truman Brewery on Brick Lane. The Reindeer is a restaurant and theatre space set up by the people behind Bethnal Green's lovely (if a little expensive) Bistrotheque, designed to last only December with the clever tagline 'Remember, the Reindeer is not for life, just for Christmas'. Of course, we don't appear to have remembered to tell you about this place in time for a restaurant booking, as it's now completely full. Never mind though, you'll still able to go to the theatre bar and enjoy a £15 cocktail, and tonight, that should be exactly your plan (yes maybe without the £15 part). Mika will be playing an acoustic show, and no doubt celebrating Grace Kelly taking the hallowed Radio 2 Record of the Week slot. Playing alongside our new favourite hero, will be London funksters Mr hudson as well as singer songwriter M Craft. Mika Last week we went out to watch a man from Beirut with colourful trousers and big hair, sing songs about fat girls, gay affairs, and lollipops. Tonight, we think you should do the same. Mika was born in the middle of a warzone in 1983 (yes, we realise that makes him disgustingly young), moved to Paris and spent most of his youth in London. What you need to know is that he's Universal Records great hope for 2007. If you like the Scissor Sisters then you're pretty much guaranteed to like this boy and his impressive vocal range. He's tall, good looking, very colourful and seem to be channelling the voice of Freddie Mercury. His first single, the I Just Died In Your Arms Tonight sound-a-like Relax, Take It Easy was released during the summer and is brilliant. In fact if we'd not got the album sampler for the forthcoming Life in Colour Motion, which is destined to be the accompaniment to your dinner parties as well as your discos, we'd be claiming he'd peaked before we'd even heard an album. As it is, we can agree with a fellow pop pundit, who when leaving his secret gig at Ronnie Scott's, declared "Bloody Hell, that sounded like a greatest hits set." Mika sang 5 fabulous songs (and 1 bizarre one), including the aforementioned Relax. Amazingly everything is this good. Love Today goes all Beck on our asses with Mika chatting away before it turns into a big stomping chorus, Grace Kelly talks about his love of the great screen legend and features the best Freddie impression we've ever heard; Billy Brown is a cute, tear-worthy tale of a man who gets married but has a secret gay lover and the gigantic Big Girl (You Are Beautiful) sings about his love for the non skinnies among us and is destined to end up a dancefloor classic. Oh, and the bizarre one? Well it was a song called Lollipop which wouldn't seem out of place if sung by Gwen Stefani accompanied by part of a musical. We've tried to forget it but it seems to have carved a nagging hole in our brain. We also like this boy a lot because he says things like this: "After I started singing as a boy I started to get jobs everywhere. With the help of a terrifyingly tough Russian singing teacher, I got to be really good at professional gigs. I did everything from recordings with the Royal Opera House to the Orbit Chewing gum jingle. I'll never forget calling up British Airways to get a ticket, only to be placed in a line, listening to my own voice. That was a painful 8 minutes. I think the other main reason for getting so much work was that I was insanely cheap! My mother and I had no idea what i was supposed to get paid, and no one was in a hurry to educate us. Looking back on it, i think 45 quid for the Orbit chewing gum jingle, could have been a little too cheap.” Tee, hee. Located in the Truman Brewery, the restaurant is created by the team at Bistrotheque who have called on all their creative friends to add to the festive experience- plates designed by fashion designer of the year Giles Deacon, decorations by stylist Katie Hillier, and christmas crackers by Pop magazine with party hats by milliner to the stars Stephen Jones add festive cheer to the gourmet meals. Offering both a Narnia-inspired 250-seater restaurant (including two private dining log cabins seating up to 30) and a theatre hosting comedy and cabaret acts (with shows from comedienne of the moment Pam Ann, American drag act Kiki and Herb, and hot new musical acts Mika and the Puppini Sisters among others), this is by far the most stylish and entertaining pop-up idea seen in London. Existing for only 23 days the Reindeer is "not for life, just for Christmas" and so after it’s final service is selling off the contents of the restaurant in a huge "Everything Must Go" sale. It’s supposed to be awesome. Mika is going to be the next big pop sensation, another Freddie Mercury and Queen. Everyone’s going to be there, and it’ll be the last gig he ever plays in a small venue. You know, it’ll be one of those nights that in ten year’s time people will say, ‘I was there’”. Hard sell or what? So I checked out this Mika on that priceless source of music chatter, Popbitch. They said, “This Autumn, Island records unveil the artist who should be the breakout superstar of the next few years”, adding that “His sound is like nothing else on the market”. Further investigation revealed an engaging but pretty thin story about a boy born in Lebanon, brought up in Paris and London, who was lost in angst but rediscovered himself through music, who learnt his singing skills in the chorus of the Royal Opera, who was mentored in song writing by American composer and producer Jodi Marr, who wowed the people at Universal Music who signed him to subsidiary Island (though his forthcoming single and album will be on the old Disco label Casablanca), and then recorded his first album in LA under the guiding hand of veteran Canadian producer Greg Wells (he also produced Paris Hilton’s new album). His surname is a mystery (but I can tell you now he shouldn’t be confused with Finnish accordionist Mika Väyrynen, or Indian bhangra artiste Mika Mehndi). And although he’s obviously talented, quite how he pulled all of this off is a bit of a mystery too. Did I tell you that he has “an American father, whom he describes rather vaguely as being ‘in finance’”? (continued...) We’re packed into the Borderline like sardines. It’s hot, excited, noisy and unpleasant. Everyone seems to know each other. There’s a huge family contingent, and a lot of braying smug and self-satisfied record company types, who seem to think that the mere mortals who actually paid for their tickets are second class citizens. They display what can only be called, with apologies to all my porcine friends, the manners of pigs. There are also fans – very excited too, a lot of them clearly underage, and under the influence of a bit too much beer (hey Serge, did you know that Sol is cool again – how did they manage that?). Outside there are members of Mika’s Secret Society (“I take it you want to go to my gigs for free and get all sorts of cool things and be a part of this...epidemic?”) – actually I think it’s what you would normally call a Street Team – handing out Mika rosettes and lollipops. They’re practically peeing themselves too. In fact everyone is so excited that they’re not paying the slightest attention to support Mara Carlyle, who gamely tries to play through the overwhelming noise with her accompanist on guitar, while she sang and played the ukulele and saw. We were quite impressed. (continued...) Mika’s band appears to be another mystery, so I can’t tell you who they were. But they were good (“but were they good enough?” I asked myself afterwards), even though they were obviously as nervous as hell at the start. Mika is a tall young man with a mop of curly hair who oozes self-confidence and charm. His voice is quite remarkable, a falsetto that is very reminiscent of the Bee Gees, but with a range that takes him easily down to Freddie Mercury. He flops and dances round the centre of the stage in a rather camp fashion, and thanks us between each song “for coming out”, and at one point for “making all this happen, it’s been a remarkable two weeks”. He sings, unless I miscounted, six songs, and having come on stage at 9.10 pm is off by 9.40 pm, no encore. Songs included opener ‘Love today’ (“après ski Euro pop trash” yelled the Photographer, “but bloody good”) ‘Billy Brown’ and ‘Relax take it easy’ from the forthcoming single, ‘Big girl’ (that must have been the two who stood in front of us and eclipsed the stage like a pair of two huge moons, or do I mean morons?) ‘Lollipop Girl’ (which a mind-numbingly asinine refrain), and Mika’s ‘anthem’, ‘Grace Kelly’, a witty and knowing piece, brilliantly performed, with a huge debt to Queen. Yes, he was good, but was he good enough? And if he’s the next Freddie Mercury, then where’s his Brian May? And does he have the depth and substance to go beyond a relatively small number of highly polished tunes? And will his backers have patience with him if he fails to deliver on their up-front investment? Actually don’t even bother to answer that one. And how long will it take for his fans to see through the crassly insincere Myspace marketing? But I’ll tell you one thing. The day after the gig I read that he’s playing at Dingwalls in November. Listen, you’ve just got to get tickets for this gig. It’s going to be awesome. Mika is going to be the next big pop sensation, another Freddie Mercury and Queen.
