The UK Promotion Of Mika thread.

Recommended Posts

Hi there!

So the idea for this thread has come from a discussion which has been going on on the TBWKTM Charts and Sales thread. Several UK members, including myself, would like to develop strategies to help the album's sales increase, as it is at number 68 (as I start this thread) rising one place, from 69. We would love to help it to rise higher. But rather than clutter up the Charts and Sales thread with lots of discussion, I think it's best to have our own thread to discuss ways of promoting Mika, with a view to helping the album sales rise.

The new single should help, but the album is so low at the moment in the UK charts, that it would be very hard to even get it up into the top twenty, so we'd like to try and give it a boost somehow.

We've discussed writing reviews on sites like Amazon which sell the album, and writing comments anywhere we can write them.

Attempting to get Mika trended on Twitter and posting links to the Rain video and his live performances of Rain, also trying to come up with a catchy trending title for the single Rain, which will let people know we are talking about Mika's song, not the weather, or a porn star called mikarain.

Requesting Mika's single on radio stations in the UK. Here is a list of some of them.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/

Radio One

http://www.galaxyfm.co.uk/

Galaxy fm (this page has links to all the regional Galaxy stations.

http://www.listenlive.eu/uk.html

This one has a long list of national radio stations and some are community projects who MIGHT be pursuaded to play Mika's music.

Using the social networking sites to write blogs and post messages about Mika's album.

But this is a brainstorming thread. Any ideas would be very welcome. The album is still doing very well in France.

I already mentioned this in the 'TBWKTM album sales' thread but I'll post it here - I just thought of the idea of 'street teaming'. I'm familiar with it as Depeche Mode, IAMX and Patrick Wolf all have fans who do it.

For those unfamiliar with the concept I think all you have to do is produce items that you believe will best help generate sales of the album (i.e. flyers, posters etc.). I think it is a good way of getting people more interested in a particular artist or group and fans all over the world can do it.

What do you think?

Mika doesn't have any adverts. Cheryl Cole has an advert, as does James Morrisson...

People don't always watch TV so front page magazines and/or posters would probably benefit. If I get to do Magazine Work Experience next year I'll do whatever I can to get him in there :roftl:

I saw a TV ad for the album from Tesco yesterday - it's on offer at £6 only this week. HMV.com

have it at £4.99. Maybe they are spending their money on discounting it instead of advertising it?

At those prices - email/tweet/facebook all the friends you have that are yet to understand your passion for MIKA the artist, and tell them to invest that small amount to buy the album and hear it for themselves.

In the Tesco Gift Ideas mag I was pleased to see that TBWKTM is one of the CD's that they recommend as a gift. Given that they only highlight 16 albums in the brochure, I was really happy that TBWKTM was one of the ones they advertise (and with a nifty blurb too).

I'm personally going to buy a few more copies of the album to give as Xmas pressies (in my self-appointed role of "Mika-pusher" - to indoctrinate all my relatives etc! but I do genuinely think my rellies will mostly like the album, I'm not just buying it for the sake of it, LOL!!)

I know that buying a few copies alone won't boost the album right up the charts, but hopefully others will also buy it for Xmas and altogether it might make a difference??

christmas is not far away, so everyone in the UK can help by buying the album at this price as a xmas present or an addition to another xmas present for all of their friends+relatives. :wink2:

i just tweeted it: buy @mikasounds' album #theboywhoknewtoomuch now for only £4.99 at http://www.hmv.com! e.g. as a xmas present for all of your friends/relatives!:-)

So have I understood?

WAG did really well in the UK. Number 4? But the album hasn't taken off?

I didn't know that and have no idea what we could do. I'm not an ideas person. Why don't people just buy it?

I have posted on mikafans.net that the album is selling for £4.99 at HMVs, in the hope that people will buy it. That's a great idea about advertising it on Twitter. I'll do that first thing tomorrow. But I agree that that strategy is not as good as proper advertising because people might think the album is not worth buying if it's so cheap already. But it may get more people interested.

I'm sick of seeing ads for Cheryl Cole's album and every other album except Mika's! What are his publicity people doing? He is working his butt off rushing here, there and everywhere to appear on TV etc, and he gets no help from adverts for his album on TV!

About the Street Teaming Blossom? Where and when do we do that? How exactly does it work?

About the Street Teaming Blossom? Where and when do we do that? How exactly does it work?

This is how it works: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Street_team

When I joined the Depeche Mode street team I actually set up a Street Team page for Ireland via Facebook that anyone could join.

I wish I knew of someone we could write to to get clearance for doing this. In the past I've usually seen messages sent via MySpace bulletins etc with an address to contact.

This is only a rough idea of a possible promotional idea.

Thanks for the info. I don't know how we'd get permission to form a street team, but most of those ideas we could do anyway. I think a good tool to use would be the Social Networking sites. If people have a myspace page then maybe a blog about Mika's album might gain some interest. A similar thing with Facebook. Chatting with people on chat sites might also help, if people use those sites.

Another idea I thought of. If anyone is having a party for Christmas or a birthday, they could make it a MIKA PARTY. Get people to come in fancy dress and of course, play Mika's music. Serve diet coke and pizza, also lollipops. You get the idea. Mika is not just a musician, there is a whole Mikaworld that goes with his music. This could also make people look at Mika in a whole new light.

I wish there was a tread like this for the USA, Mika is probably doing bad here. :(

Anyway, good luck guys!

Well the USA is included on the other promotion thread that's for untoured or underdeveloped countries, and is a sticky thread on this same section. But anyone who wants to promote Mika is welcome onto here, regardless of where they are from. If necessary I'll change the title to something more universal.

I have been advertising the album in my tweets, as being £4.99 from HMVs.

For Americans I think it's probably important to keep up the barrage of the radio stations, but also to get the word out there. My idea about giving a Mika party and inviting your friends who you want to spread the magic to, or having a sponsored Mikathon for charity, where you play his music/videos/interviews. A Mika Karaoke Night if you can do that.

Some people post videos of themselves on Youtube. If you do that, make sure Mika's music is playing in the background and mention the song, and Mika's name so people know it's him, or create a Mika tribute video.

These Ideas are great in any country, and there will be more as people get involved.

Edit: So today I've been writing reviews and leaving comments on the sites that sell the album. Also mentioning that the album is on sale at HMV for £4.99, on Twitter.

The other thread is sticky. I wish this one was too, so it wouldn't get lost.

Bravo Marilyn!

THIS IS A REALLY GOOD IDEA!

I have mikfans.net in my favourites as it is a great resource for "All Things Mika."

Congrats Marilyn on becoming an editor there.

Blossom I had never heard of "street teaming."

I have looked it up & think it is an interesting tool.

From the other thread where we started this discussion;

menthe, MJaneClouds, mellody, huikings, elise XX, Blossom, lollipopgirl83, Pandora Z & Ellie13 have all expressed an interest in developing ideas & more importantly participating in some concrete efforts to help sales of TBWKTM and promoting Mika.

Here in this thread;

Marilyn Mastin, Blossom, Louisag, CazGirl, SunshineGirl, mellody, Ruth, BuzzBuzz, and me - so far - have jumped on board.

I am sure all of us know of other Mika Fans on other threads that would join us, especially the Mika Fans here that do a lot of the voting in the voting threads.

I am confident that we can come up with some ideas that will produce REAL results.

0_o Mika tours the USA and where not underdeveloped so I thought that that thread didn't apply. I've been thinking about E-mailing the Radio stations about it, and actually I've been thinking about making a tread and everyone who is in the USA will on the same day E-mail all the related radio stations about playing MIKA. That way, if there is more than one person per area )If possible) they will know there is more than one interested person. It was just an idea though, since hearing from others in America they've just been ridculed by the DJ's.

I did hear from one person at school though they did used to play "Grace Kelly" on one station around me.

The Mika related party sounds brilliant, but the only people I know who like Mika is my Mom and 2/3 of my sisters, a girl from school whom I'm not friends with, and my Aunt (Who lives in Florida/Italy. Actually, the reason she knows/loves him is because they play him on the Italian MTV).

If I did do one and invited my friends and told my family, they would think I'm obsesed with him and that I need help/I am a serious weirdo (More so my friends on the last part)

Though if I ever do a party with Karaoke or go to one with one, I'll play Mika (or a party in general). I have no idea where I would get Mika-less tacks with lyrics CD though.

I do play him often during open studio at school (My school has it's own news for 10+ min. during 2nd hour and Open studio is what we call our club/practice meetings after school) and I've played "Relax (Take it Easy)" and "Love Today" in the minute we play music before the news starts. I've told a lot of people I know about him too. I also had my Teacher put him into Pandora for our class radio. Sadly this turned out to be a mistake since because of some of Mika's odd lyrics I have her skip a few songs (Billy Brown, Big Girl) and the one song that played, "Lolipop", everyone hated it and my friend said "What kind of person would write this?" and when the little girl talks, she said, "And involve little children." Frankly, I have no idea why she said that and why people hated it, but whatever. I don't know if this counts as promoting, but for my concert poster I made for Graphic Communications (Interestingly enough the same class who hated him) I made a Mika poster. (I made it in September, when I 1st found out he was touring here (and I couldn't go. ) Anyway, you get the idea.

That was a bit long....

Hi Buzzbuzz I will post this link for street teaming as I had never heard of it before & am still trying to comprehend the whole concept:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Street_team

I think Flash Mobs are effective today.

Maybe I shouldn't be comparing the two.

I live in Canada so I understand where you are coming from as far as promoting Mika in North America.

I am considering starting a thread to enlist help to get the television show Glee to do one of Mika's songs.

I want to look into it & plan it really well before doing anything as we will need lots of emails or whatever to get the kind of attention where they will seriously consider it.

It might help once we have seen the vids from the Union Chapel Concert tongiht with the King's Singers.

They are an accapella group.

I do know as a fan of Mika's I want to do more than just come here & have fun.

Do you think this thread should be in the Mika News and Press Forum????

Is it possible for a moderator to put this thread over there?

We need to be noticed don't we?

No, sorry, it really doesn't belong in the Mika News forum -- it belongs here.

But I will make it a sticky thread, so it stays on top in this section. :thumb_yello:

I've been meaning to write to you about this, though -- I had a

conversation with Mika's team a few weeks ago and they actually

mentioned something about maybe trying a street team kind

of thing in the US, trying to promote Mika more.

They never really followed up with me about it, but it's been in the back

of our minds as something that perhaps we ought to pursue on our own.

The fact that you guys have started on your own is great, and I think

some of the ideas that you're talking about are good. I'll keep an eye on

this thread and see how you're doing, but if you really want to get my

attention about something don't hesitate to send me a PM, OK? :original:

Eeeee! That would be brilliant! I've sadly havn't seen Glee, since I can't find the 1st episode, but I love their version of "Don't Stop Believing". If they did a Mika song, I know of a bunch of people in broadcasting that love that show...

Anyway, I find Mika's songs really fun to sing along too. In fact, I was already considering trying out for the talent show my school holds at the end of the year, and since my Mom says I can sound pretty when I sing along to Mika, maybe instead of "Mad World" or "Eleanor Rigby" I'll sing one of Mika's. That is, if I can work my voice so I don't fail (I've never had voice training, but my Mom knows the ropes and taught my sister).

First of all, dcdeb, thanks for making this thread a sticky, so it won't get lost.

Some great news is that Rain is number one in the Charts in France, Live Twitter, thanks to all who have been voting.

Mika's gig with the Kings Singers is reported to have been outstanding! Hopefully, if we get some good quality vids on Youtube, this may make more people sit up and take notice of Mika!

My husband also told me that TBWKTM was advertised on TV this morning, and Mika will be on TV at the RAH Concert tonight at 8pm BBC1, so we'll see what comes of all of that.

Also, if Mika and his people have been thinking of some kind of Street teaming in America, it's good that we on this thread can make a start on it and the way to start getting him played on American radio would be to get as many people involved as possible. It's no use about 20 people asking for Mika songs, you need more than that, and the idea of having a certain day where you email the stations is a really good idea. So use twitter, myspace MSN facebook, anything to spread the word.

I am going to advertise this thread on mikafans.net, to try and get more people involved with promoting Mika.

I will be curious to hear what you think of Glee.

One of the things Mika has going for him ( as far as Glee using one of his songs ) is that a lot of the accapella groups in the U.S. & Britain are already singing his songs. We just need to bombard the production company or/and television station with a multitude of contacts to nudge them to consider doing a Mika song or two or three. I know - I am greedy.:roftl:

If you visit youtube you will find accapella groups singing Mika's songs.

Take care.

I wanted to ask whether you & everybody here in this thread if you think a "Flash Mob" could be organized in L.A.?

I know Mika has a lot of fans in L.A.

Plus Flash Mobs have fans of it's own.

Between the two sets of fans, twitter, MFC, other social media outlets it would be amazing & newsworthy if a "The Boy WHo Knew Too Much" Mika song was organized.

I am sure Mika has creative producing/directing friends in L.A. that would see it through.

I would think that the entertainment news media would pick up on it & the name Mika & one his songs would be given some good coverage in the North America. :thumb_yello::thumb_yello:

I think it is something we here should talk about.

What do you think??

What does everybody here think??

Gee... the Deluxe edition costs about 20-25 euros in Italy! And they even wonder why Mika doesn't sell more in my country. :sneaky2:
