Review Mika Sportpaleis Merksem woensdag 5 mei 2010

Reikhalzend hadden 15 200 toeschouwers uitgekeken naar het optreden van Mika in het Sportpaleis. Oorspronkelijk zou hij er immers op 12 maart staan, maar die datum werd om productionele redenen verschoven naar 5 mei. Wie meer dan twee maanden kon wachten, werd beloond voor zijn geduld. Mika bracht zijn fantasierijke wereld naar Merksem. En hoewel het eerst nog wennen was voor  het publiek, ging het uiteindelijk overstag door het jeugdig, speelse enthousiasme van Mika en zijn band.

De show leek wel te beginnen als een Studio 100-voorstelling voor volwassenen. Eén voor één komen enkele figuranten op een schuinstaande cirkel om er plaats te nemen rond de zetel en te kijken naar de lancering van een bemande raket . Daarbij gaat iets mis en ontploft de capsule. Ian McKellen (die we onder andere kennen uit zijn rol van Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings) leest in ware 60s-stijl het nieuwsbericht voor. Het is een wat lange introductie eer Mika zwevend in een ruimtepak, met zijn bruin koffertje in de hand op het podium neerdaalt. Planeten zweven boven hem.

 

Een gattenkletser, daar lijkt Michael Holbrook Penniman, het wel voor te hebben. Al gauw zien we hem een trendy vest met verlengd stukje textiel achteraan. Later in zijn set zal hij 2 t-shirts dragen, een met rode en witte strepen, het ander met fluo opdruk, met telkens een langer stuk achteraan. Het toont dat de man houdt van klassieke elementen maar die liefst van al in een modern jasje steekt.  Ook zo tijdens het optreden. Zo werd “Good gone girl” ingeleid door de aria van de Koningin van de Nacht uit de opera de Toverfluit en hoorden we het ganse nummer lang een clavecimbel.

 

Aanvankelijk dreigde Mika’s optreden te verzuipen in de vele visuele ideetjes en theatraliteit. Het publiek wist dan ook niet goed wat doen: mooi passief kijken of zich volledig laten gaan. De rode draad- de koffer waar allerlei objecten uit kwamen die geassocieerd konden worden met een volgende song- kwam gelukkig steeds minder sterk uit de verf. Mika praatte de ganse show in 3 talen: Frans, Engels en Nederlands. Dat op zich is een ongelooflijke verdienste. “Maak u klaar voor een trompetsolo” zei hij perfect verstaanbaar waarop hij trompetgeluiden nabootste terwijl hij op zijn lichtgevende buffetpiano stond.

 

Een vrouwenstem horen we roepen om pizza en cola light en voegt daaraan toe  “I’m starving” wanneer Mika zijn koffer voor het eerst opent. Het blijkt de aankondiger te zijn voor “Big girl”. Grote opblaasbare getatoeëerde vrouwenbenen , met rode hakken, witte stippen en een strik zien we aan weerskanten van het podium. De kitsch is nooit veraf bij deze artiest. Later zal hij neprozen, een glitterparaplu en een grote fluo roze vlag met “Billy” in fluo gele letters eruit halen.  Dat laatste ondersteunt “Billy Brown”. Tijdens “Any Other World “, een traag nummer, horen we strijkers op tape meermaals het tempo van het nummer versnellen. Daardoor klapt het publiek mee in de handen, maar die passages duren naar ons aanvoelen niet lang genoeg. Wat de grote Chinese drakenkop komt uitspoken tijdens “Touches You” is ons een raadsel. Het is pas nadat de zanger heeft gezegd dat hij na de AB en Vorst nu in Antwerpen mag staan en daar met “C’est malade. C’est super, merci.” zichtbaar blij mee is, dat hij het Antwerpse publiek op zijn handen krijgt.

 

“Over My Shoulder” dat hij op zijn 15de schreef, wordt op het einde beloond met tribunegestamp. Het kantelmoment is eindelijk daar waardoor het publiek steeds meer begint te participeren in de voorstelling. De sterrenhemel als decor maakt plaats voor een groot dagboek waarin Mika schrijft. Stripfiguren passeren er de revue. “We are not what you think we are” horen we in de verte, een voorbode van “We are golden” dat hij als laatste nummer voor de bissen opspaart. De zin “I hate days like these” uit “Rain” wordt stevig meegekeeld. Daarna dankt Mika zijn publiek. “Jullie hebben mijn leven veranderd. Samen met Bercy was dit één van de grootste zalen die ik heb aangedaan.” geeft hij mee. De man glundert en lacht zijn tanden bloot na al de spontane hartjes die het publiek vormde met duim en wijsvingers tijdens “Happy ending” terwijl een processie van figuren in fluo pakjes op het podium paradeert met een grote pop die achteraan wordt weggedragen.

 

Mika surft constant tussen het extreem feestelijke en de sombere kanten van ons bestaan. Maar de man verpakt het allemaal wel op een positieve manier. Zijn muzikanten schiet hij een voor een met zijn vingers neer. En wanneer hij wijsvinger, middelvinger en duim ook naar zijn hoofd richt, gaat het licht uit voor ons allen. “Antwerpen kunnen jullie me horen?” vraagt de zanger. “Ik ben dood” zegt hij vervolgens waarop de band doodleuk opstaat en het nummer opnieuw laat knallen tot het einde.

 

“Love today” zet Mika solo in met allemaal houten kruisen rondom hem, een kerkhof terwijl in de grote boom hartjes, bloemen en witte (vredes)duiven hangen.  Op zijn vraag springt het ganse Sportpaleis tijdens “We are golden” waarbij de goudkleurige confetti ook de zaal wordt ingeblazen.  Het nummer krijgt een stevige gitaarsolo mee. Mika neemt zijn bruine koffer en verlaat het podium. Het verhaal is verteld. Sterke rode draad hoor die de ganse show niets aan jeugdige frisheid en spontaniteit deed inboeten.

“Je moet me verontschuldigen. Hij ziet er wat dood uit. Hij moest op mij lijken.” zegt Mika wanneer hij opnieuw plaatsneemt achter de piano met zijn marionet erop en “Toy Boy” speelt dat met een knipoog naar Mozart eindigt. “Lollipop” is pure Stomp met Mika en zijn groep die elk op een metalen afvalbak beuken. Even dachten we dat koekiemonster er nog zou uitkomen. Maar uiteindelijk kregen we opnieuw opblaasbare figuren te zien en confetti.

 

De pret kon werkelijk niet op en dus kwam de band nog een extra keer terug om “Relax” te spelen waarna 8 trucks en 4 bussen werden ingeladen met als bestemming Amsterdam. We zagen een overdonderende show die visueel straf was en ons alvast een energieboost bezorgde. Alleen die danspasjes van Mika nadoen, met bolle rug op de tippen staan of heen en weer op de enkels springen, dat lukt ons nog niet al te best.

 

Maar we krijgen alvast voldoende tijd om te oefenen tot 30 mei want dan staat Mika op Pinkpop, en op 12 juli doet hij ons land nog eens aan op TW Classic in Werchter. Een absolute must-see dit seizoen!

Michael Holbrook Penniman seems to be aiming for a gossip. Soon we see him a trendy cardigan with an extended piece of textile at the back. Later in his set he will wear 2 t-shirts, one with red and white stripes, the other with fluorescent print, each with a longer piece at the back. It shows that the man likes classic elements but prefers to put it in a modern jacket. Also during the performance. For example, “Good gone girl” was introduced by the aria of the Queen of the Night from the opera De Toverfluit and we heard a harpsichord for the entire song.

Initially, Mika's performance threatened to drown in the many visual ideas and theatricality. The audience therefore did not really know what to do: look pretty passively or let yourself go completely. Fortunately, the red thread - the suitcase from which all kinds of objects came out that could be associated with the next song - became less and less visible. Mika spoke the entire show in 3 languages: French, English and Dutch. That in itself is an incredible merit. “Get ready for a trumpet solo,” he said perfectly, mimicking trumpet sounds while standing on his luminous upright piano.

We hear a woman's voice calling for pizza and diet coke, adding “I'm starving” when Mika first opens his suitcase. It appears to be the announcer for “Big girl”. Large inflatable tattooed women's legs, with red heels, white dots and a bow, can be seen on both sides of the stage. Kitsch is never far away with this artist. Later he will take out fake roses, a glitter umbrella and a big fluo pink flag with “Billy” in fluo yellow letters. The latter supports “Billy Brown”. During “Any Other World”, a slow song, we hear strings on tape accelerate the tempo of the song several times. As a result, the audience claps their hands, but these passages don't feel long enough. What the great Chinese dragon head will say during “Touches You” is a mystery to us. It is only after the singer has said that after the AB and Vorst he can now be in Antwerp and there with “C'est malade. Thank you very much. ” is visibly happy that he gets the Antwerp public on his hands.

“Over My Shoulder”, which he wrote at the age of 15, is rewarded with grandstand stamping at the end. The tipping point is finally there, as a result of which the audience is increasingly participating in the performance. The starry sky as a backdrop gives way to a large diary in which Mika writes. Cartoon characters are reviewed. We hear “We are not what you think we are” in the distance, a harbinger of “We are golden” that he will save as the last number for the bissen. The sentence "I hate days like these" from "Rain" is firmly conveyed. Then Mika thanks his audience. “You have changed my life. Together with Bercy, this was one of the largest rooms I have visited. ” he gives. The man beams and smiles bare after all the spontaneous hearts that the audience formed with thumb and index fingers during “Happy ending” while a procession of figures in fluorescent suits parading on stage with a large doll that is carried away at the back.

Mika constantly surfs between the extremely festive and the gloomy sides of our existence. But the man packs it all in a positive way. He shoots his musicians one by one with his fingers. And when he also points index finger, middle finger and thumb to his head, the light goes out for all of us. "Antwerp can you hear me?" the singer asks. "I'm dead," he says, then the band stands up and lets the song pop again to the end.

 

“Love today” Mika uses solo with all wooden crosses around him, a graveyard while hearts, flowers and white (peace) pigeons hang in the big tree. At his request, the entire Sportpaleis jumps during “We are golden”, where the gold-colored confetti is also blown into the hall. The song gets a solid guitar solo. Mika takes his brown suitcase and leaves the stage. The story has been told. Strong thread that did not lose youthful freshness and spontaneity throughout the show.

"You must apologize. He looks a bit dead. He had to look like me. ” Mika says when he sits back at the piano with his puppet on it and plays "Toy Boy" which ends with a wink to Mozart. “Lollipop” is pure Stomp with Mika and his group each pounding on a metal waste bin. For a moment we thought that the cookie monster would come out. But in the end we got to see inflatable figures and confetti again.

The fun really could not be and so the band came back an extra time to play “Relax” after which 8 trucks and 4 buses were loaded with destination Amsterdam. We saw an overwhelming show that was visually punishing and gave us an energy boost. Only imitating those dance steps by Mika, standing with her back on her toes or jumping back and forth on his ankles, we are not doing that very well.

But we already have enough time to practice until May 30 because then Mika will be at Pinkpop, and on July 12 he will visit our country again at TW Classic in Werchter. An absolute must-see this season!
