Vendredi 16 octobre 2015, Mika présentera Heaven, son nouveau show, au Zénith de Caen (Calvados). Un spectacle qui a été imaginé en partie dans cette salle, où le chanteur anglo-libanais était en résidence les 16 et 17 septembre 2015. 
Entretien avec ce jeune homme débordé, mais qui a su rester simple et disponible, et qui a noué une relation singulière avec la France.

Un album, une période de la vie

Normandie-actu : Vous déclarez à l’envi qu’écrire de la musique vous aide à gérer votre vie. À quel moment correspond votre nouvel opus, No Place In Heaven ?
Mika : J’essaie d’écrire des choses que je ne peux pas faire, ni dire dans ma vie normale. Plus jeune, je chantais les chansons des autres, mais j’étais déçu, car ça ne fonctionnait pas avec ma voix très particulière. Du coup, j’ai écrit mes propres compositions, ça m’a aidé et ça a ouvert quelque chose de plus important. Lorsqu’on écoute mes disques, on peut suivre les changements dans ma vie. Dans le deuxième, on ressent la peur d’avoir trop partagé ; dans le troisième, ce sont des moments douloureux. Dans le dernier, on est comme après l’orage du troisième, comme si les choses commençaient à se rouvrir. Aujourd’hui, j’ai 32 ans, j’ai donc fait un album très transparent, mais qui est aussi festif et organique.

Votre processus de création est donc un véritable exutoire ?
Oui, c’est ça. C’est une façon de gérer ma vie, mais sans perdre la discrétion à laquelle je tiens. La musique est une façon élégante de parler de soi. Ce n’est pas comme si je me confessais à longueur de pages dans les journaux people ! Parler de notre vie, de notre travail, c’est une chose importante, il faut le faire sans avoir honte.

« Je veux vivre »

Avec vos mélodies et vos clips, vous renvoyez l’image d’une personne joyeuse, mais on sent une vraie gravité en vous…
Quand je suis fâché, je l’exprime aussi honnêtement que quand je suis content ! Mon job est un énorme privilège parce que je me sens libre, et ça m’a adouci. Je ne gaspille pas mon énergie, ni mon temps. Par exemple, il y a encore trois ans, en dehors de mes clips, on me voyait assez peu à la télévision, car je disais non à tout. J’ai décidé de tout changer, de mettre mon ego de côté et d’arrêter de me surprotéger. C’était totalement idiot de faire ça. Aujourd’hui, je veux juste vivre. J’ai un agenda quatre fois plus chargé qu’avant mais je me sens quatre fois plus léger !

Dans cet emploi du temps chargé, on retrouve notamment l’émission de TF1, The Voice. Vous serez toujours membre de jury l’année prochaine ?
Ce n’est pas encore confirmé. Tout ce que je peux vous dire, c’est que j’ai pris beaucoup de plaisir à participer à cette émission. La télévision agit comme un révélateur. On rentre chez les gens, on fait partie de leur famille. Il y a cinq ans, je n’aurais pas pu y participer, je n’étais pas prêt. Faire cette émission, où l’on parle beaucoup, m’a permis de montrer qui j’étais dans le privé. 
En plus, en France, ce show a vraiment pris une dimension particulière. Les audiences sont excellentes, mais nous avons surtout la chance d’avoir des candidats de grande qualité. On sait qu’il n’y a pas que le gagnant qui pourra développer un projet artistique crédible. Par exemple, Kendji Girac, Frero Delavega et Louane ont tous débuté une vraie carrière. Moi qui voyage beaucoup, je peux vous dire que ce n’est pas le cas partout. Ici, ce programme est moins formaté, moins faux qu’ailleurs.

De la musique à la mode

Vous travaillez également avec le célèbre créateur de chaussures, Christian Louboutin…
Je ne travaille pas vraiment avec lui. Je le connais bien, et il me racontait souvent qu’il n’arrivait pas à faire des chaussures pour les hommes. Il ne savait pas comment s’y prendre car il estimait ne pas avoir de raison de les faire. En quelque sorte, je suis cette raison ! Mais je lui ai dit : « Christian, sur scène, je dois porter des baskets, je ne peux pas bouger sinon. » Il a donc travaillé à partir de ça.

Cela fait quasiment de vous son égérie masculine !
C’est une façon de voir les choses. Mais non, je n’irai pas jusque-là. Tout ce que je peux vous dire, c’est qu’aujourd’hui, il m’arrive de croiser d’autres hommes avec les chaussures de « ma » collection et ça me rend jaloux ! (Rires)

Un show plein d’émotions

Parlez-nous de votre show, Heaven, que vous avez conçu en partie à Caen…
C’est un spectacle mis en scène, avec un début, un milieu et une fin. Il s’appuie sur l’histoire de mes racines, du théâtre, de l’opéra, dans le contexte de mes chansons. C’est une sélection de titres de mes quatre albums dans un récit qui explique qui je suis, mais avec des versions différentes, seulement pour un soir. 
Mon objectif était de créer quelque chose qui provoque l’émerveillement, quel que soit votre âge, quelque chose de délicieux à regarder. C’est très important pour moi. Et j’ai choisi de le faire avec des choses qui sont faites à la main, des techniques simples qui suscitent de l’émotion.

Vous le présenterez à Caen, le vendredi 16 octobre 2015. Et ensuite ?
On démarrera la tournée en Europe. Enfin… pas que. Nous irons aussi en Asie, aux États-Unis, avant d’attaquer l’Amérique du Sud. C’est devenu beaucoup plus qu’une tournée européenne !

Vendredi 16 octobre 2015, Mika présentera Heaven, son nouveau show, au Zénith de Caen (Calvados). Un spectacle qui a été imaginé en partie dans cette salle, où le chanteur anglo-libanais était en résidence les 16 et 17 septembre 2015. 

Entretien avec ce jeune homme débordé, mais qui a su rester simple et disponible, et qui a noué une relation singulière avec la France.

Mika : J’essaie d’écrire des choses que je ne peux pas faire, ni dire dans ma vie normale. Plus jeune, je chantais les chansons des autres, mais j’étais déçu, car ça ne fonctionnait pas avec ma voix très particulière. Du coup, j’ai écrit mes propres compositions, ça m’a aidé et ça a ouvert quelque chose de plus important. Lorsqu’on écoute mes disques, on peut suivre les changements dans ma vie. On Friday October 16th, Mika will be on stage with Heaven, his new show, in Caen's zénith  (Calvados). Parts of the show were created in that particular place, where the British-Lebanese singer was staging his show during two days on September 16th and 17th, 2015.  

Our chat with this very busy young man who knows how to stay simple and available, and who has a very special relationship with  France.

An album, a time périod in life

Normandie-actu : You often say that writing music helps you deal with your life? What part of your life does your new album, No Place in Heaven symbolize? 

Mika : I try to write about things that I can't do  nor say in my regular life. When I wwas younger, I used to sing other people's songs, but I was disappointed because  it didn't work with my very particular voice.So I wrote my own songs , which helped me and lead to something more important. When you listen to my records, you can follow the changes in my life. In the second, you can feel the fear of having shared too much; in the third, painful moments. In the last one, it's as if  we are after the storm that was the third one,  as if things started opening up again. Today I'm 32, so I made a very transparent album which is also very festive and organic. 

Normandie-actu : So the way you create songs is a true outlet for you?

Mika: Yes, that's it.  It's a way to deal with my life, but that allows me to stay discreet which is essential to me.Music is an elegant way to talk about oneself. It's not as if I was making confessions throughout tabloids's pages! Talking about one's life, one's work is an important thing, and it has to be done without feeling ashamed.

« I want to live »

Normandie-actu : With your melodies and your clips, you seem like a happy person, but I feel there's a true seriousness in you..... When I'm mad , I say it as honestly as when I'm happy! It's a huge privilegde to do my job because I feel free, and it made me softer, I don't waste my energy, nor my time anymore. For example, three years ago, I was not much on TV , because I used to say no to everything? I decided to change all that, to forget about my ego, and stop  protecting myself so much. It was totally sillly to do that. Today, I just want to live. My schedule is four times more filled than before , but I feel four times lighter!

Normandie-actu : As part of this busy schedule, there's TF1, The Voicein particular, will you still be a jury member in it next year?

Mika: It hasn't been confirmed yet.  All I can tell you is that I have had a lot  of fun doing this show. Television is revealing. You enter people's homes, you become part of their family. Five years ago, I could have never been a judge in The Voice show, I wasn't ready? Doing this show in which we talk a lot , allowed me to show who I am as a person. 

Whatsmore , in France, this show evolved into something really special. Audiences are excellent , but mainly we are lucky as we have very good candidates. People know that the winer is not the only singer who will be able to start a true artistic project. For example, Kendji Girac, Frero Delavega et Louane, all of them have started a true career. As I travel a lot, I can tell you that it's not the case everywhere. Here, that program is less formated, less fake than elsewhere. 

From music to fashion

Normandie-actu : You also work with the famous shoes maker, Christian Louboutin…

Mika: I don't really work with him. I know him well and he often told me he couldn't create shoes for me. He didn't know how to since he thought he had no reason to make any. In a way I am this reason! But I told him: « Christian, I have to wear sneakers on stage, otherwise I can't move. » So he started working after I told him that. 

Normandie-actu : That almost makes you his masculine muse , sort of!

Mika: That's of way to see it. But no, I won't go that far. All I can tell you is that now, I sometimes see other men wearing "my" shoe collection, and that makes me jalous. (laughs) 

A  show that is filled with emotions

Normandie-actu : Tell us about your show , Heaven, that you partially created in Caen…

Mika: It's a show with lots of staging and a story, with a beginning, a middle and an end. It is based on the history of my roots, of theatre, of opera, within the context of my songs. It's a selection of titles among my four albums in a story which explains who I am, but with different versions, only for one evening.

I aimed at created something that makes people marvel, no matter the age of the public, something delicious to watch. It's very important for me. And I chose to do it with handmade things, with simple techniques that create emotion. 

Normandie-actu : You will be on stage in  Caen on Friday October 16th vendredi 16 2015. And afterwards ?

 We  will start the tour  in Europe. Well… not only. We will also t ake it  to  Asia, to the United States, before we take it  to South America . It has become a lot more than a european tour !

when an aggressive brain tumour was diagnosed. The courageous teenager fought during 16 months. Margaux had initiated a fundraising in favor of research, which provoked a huge response of many people showing their solidarity and an unprecedented big number of donations. Her mother, Patricia Blanc, has taken over Margaux's fight through the association Imagine for Margo-Children WithoutCancer. We met its ambassador, the singerMika..

France Dimanche : How did you hear about this association ?
Mika : Thanks to the photographer Peter Lindbergh. He contacted me and asked me if I would join them during a week end in 2014 in order to surprise the « little warriors». Do you know that each year in France, 2 500 children and teenagers are diagnosed with cancer and that 500 die because of cancer, which is more than a child per day ? People are not aware that most research programs are for treatments for adults and that only 2 % of the money funds of the labs who look for new meds are dedicated to search for children cancer. Everyone knows about that illness.But unless someone close to you had to fight against it, people ignore what a dramatic change it creates in the life of those kids and of their families... Most of the times it's very hard, and even more for those who don't get enough support. The association was created at the end of the year 2011. Its president Patricia Blanc, vice-présidente Marie-Anne Aymerich and Dr Dominique Valteau-Couanet [in charge of children and teenagers cancer treatment unit at ’Institut Gustave-Roussy à Villejuif,added by France Dimanche ] have an accute sense of emergency. I am very impressed by those women' s strenght. The.association is rather discreet and only relies on unpaid volunteers . Peter Lindbergh offered his photos and JC Decaux the posters display.

 

.France Dimanche . : Tell us about those Camargue week ends with the « little warriors » ?
Mika : That is Peter' s idea. He is a joyful anarchist . He ates snobs and fads. However , he is the greatest fashion photographer! Last year I met Juliette and Noé. Both were 10 years old and they were my fav. They both died. They are the ones who made me want to get involved publicly. After Juliette's death, Adèle, her 7 years old litle sister , sent me a very joyful letter with photos. She wanted me to see Juliette with hair.

 

.France Dimanche. : It's not easy to support such a cause.…
Mika : We all have to face hardship. I think all is written and that one has to do something in favor of those exceptional persons . Those children and the most honest and the most straightforward. The only thing that might shock about them is how mature they are. It's moving inspiring if needed, but also so sad to see that they are so adult. They helped me, thanks to their incredible wisdom sagesse, how to step back in life

 

.France Dimanche. : You are 32 years old , but you seem to be like a child when you're with them.
Mika. : Peter and the association get involved fpr those kids joyfully. And Disney's joy ! This enthousiasm, they are the ones who gave it to me. They are so gifted, or hard, those enfants terribles and warriors . In Camargue, they were totally amazing. We played with a kite on the beach, we built sand castles, we did a shooting . At the restaurant, during the flamenco evening, once they had had enough of flamenco they forced me to sing! Then Noé got up on the stage to replace me. Even if pretty Juliette was tired , I found them very funny. They didn't have any filter when they talked. Then one day, Noé's mother came to see me on The Voice set to tell me about the bad news. Then I got Juliette's mother's letter and she was thanking me because that week end was her daughter's best memory. But Juliette had died too. All the sudden, it was real.. When you witness their will of living, their urge to express themselves and their parents' energy, you forget the outcome .

 

France Dimanche. : « Go, fight , win ! » What do you think about the message Margaux left us ?
Mika : One could believe it's a commercial to sell sneakers, but it's heartbreaking whem you know who created that slogan. It is very inspiring for me, when I am in a difficult situation, when I feel excluded, those words come to my mind. It's a very good motivation. On the way back home in the train, Clément wrote to me : « At least, we feel less alone. » I know why those words are so important. This cause isn't known enough , we have to share their messages and get more donations in favor of children cancer.

 

France Dimanche: Will you take part in the 4th run « Enfants sans cancer » organised by the association on September 27th ?
Mika : No, I will be touring and I won't be able to be at domaine national de Saint-Cloud where this great event will take place. The association has already gathered almost 700 000 euros to fund a treatment targeted to those little adults relapsing.

Margaux avait 13 ans quand elle a eu des maux de tête et des vomissements. Sa vie et celle de sa famille ont basculé quand le diagnostic est tombé : tumeur agressive au cerveau ! La courageuse adolescente s’est battue pendant seize mois. Avant sa disparition, Margaux a initié une collecte pour faire avancer la recherche, qui a entraîné un immense mouvement de solidarité et un record de dons. Sa maman, Patricia Blanc, prolonge son combat à travers l’association Imagine for Margo-Children Without Cancer. Son ambassadeur, le chanteur Mika, nous a accordé un entretien.

 

France Dimanche : Comment avez-vous connu l’association ?

 

Mika : Grâce au photographe Peter Lindbergh. Il m’a proposé de les rejoindre un week-end en 2014 pour faire une surprise aux « petits guerriers ». Savez-vous que chaque année, en France, 2 500 enfants et adolescents sont « diagnostiqués », et 500 meurent, soit plus d’un décès par jour ? On ignore que les efforts sont portés sur les cancers adultes, et que 2 % seulement des fonds sont alloués à la recherche pédiatrique par l’industrie pharmaceutique. Tout le monde connaît cette maladie. Mais, à moins de l’avoir côtoyée de près, on ignore à quel point elle bouleverse la vie des gosses et le parcours de leur famille… La plupart du temps, c’est très dur, spécialement pour ceux qui n’ont pas assez de soutien. L’association est née fin 2011. Sa présidente, Patricia Blanc, la vice-présidente Marie-Anne Aymerich et le Dr Dominique Valteau-Couanet [chef du département de cancérologie de l’enfant et de l’adolescent de l’Institut Gustave-Roussy à Villejuif, ndlr] ont le sens de l’urgence. Je suis très impressionné par la force de ces femmes. L’association est assez discrète et il n’y a que des bénévoles. Peter Lindbergh a donné ses photos et JC Decaux a offert l’affichage.

 

F.D. : Parlez-nous de ces week-ends en Camargue avec les « petits guerriers » ?

 

M. : C’est une idée de Peter. C’est un anarchiste joyeux. Il déteste le snobisme et les tendances. Pourtant, c’est le plus grand

photographe de mode ! L’année dernière, j’ai rencontré Juliette et Noé. Ils avaient 10 ans et étaient mes préférés. Ils sont décédés. Ce sont eux qui m’ont motivé à m’engager publiquement. Après la mort de Juliette, Adèle, sa petite soeur de 7 ans, m’a envoyé une lettre pleine de gaieté avec des photos. Elle voulait que je voie Juliette avec des cheveux.

 

F.D. : Ce n’est pas facile de soutenir une telle cause…

 

M. : On vit tous des épreuves. Je pense que tout est écrit, et qu’il faut agir pour ces personnes exceptionnelles. Ces enfants sont les plus honnêtes et les plus directs. La seule chose qui puisse choquer, c’est leur maturité. C’est touchant, au besoin inspirant, mais aussi tellement triste de les voir aussi adultes. Ils m’ont aidé, grâce à leur incroyable sagesse, à prendre un certain recul sur la vie.

 

F.D. : À 32 ans, vous semblez comme un enfant avec eux ?

 

M. : Peter et l’association s’engagent pour ces mômes, dans la joie. Et ce n’est pas celle de Disney ! Cet enthousiasme, c’est eux qui me l’ont donné. Ils sont tellement doués, ou durs, ces enfants terribles et guerriers. En Camargue, ils étaient hallucinants. On a joué au cerf-volant sur la plage, bâti des châteaux de sable, fait des photos. Au restaurant, à la soirée flamenco, quand ils en ont eu marre, ils m’ont forcé à chanter ! Et puis Noé est monté sur scène pour me remplacer. Même si la jolie Juliette était fatiguée, je les ai trouvés très drôles. Ils n’avaient aucun filtre pour parler. Et puis, la mère de Noé est venue me voir sur le plateau de The Voice pour m’apprendre la mauvaise nouvelle. Et j’ai reçu la lettre de la maman de Juliette qui me remerciait, car ce séjour était le plus beau souvenir de sa fille. Mais Juliette était aussi décédée. Tout d’un coup, c’était réel. Face à leur force de vie, cette urgence de s’exprimer et l’énergie de leurs parents, on oublie les conséquences.

 

F.D. : « Vas-y, bats-toi, gagne ! » Que pensezvous du message laissé par Margaux ?

 

M. : On pourrait croire que c’est une pub pour des baskets, mais c’est poignant quand on sait de qui viennent ces mots. C’est très inspirant pour moi, quand je suis dans une situation difficile, que je me sens exclu, j’y pense. C’est une belle motivation. Dans le train du retour, Clément m’a écrit : « Au moins, on se sent moins seuls. » Je sais pourquoi ces mots sont si importants. Cette cause n’est pas assez connue, on se doit de transmettre leurs messages et obtenir des dons pour la recherche des cancers pédiatriques.

 

F.D. : Participerez-vous à la 4e course « Enfants sans cancer » organisée par l’association le 27 septembre ?

 

M. : Non, je serai en tournée et je ne pourrai pas me rendre au domaine national de Saint-Cloud où a lieu cette belle manifestation. L’association a déjà réuni près de 700 000 euros pour financer un traitement ciblé pour ces petits adultes en rechute.

L’Atelier will be the smallest place im which you will sing…

Mika: Yes and consequently I can't do the big show but it will be a concert filled with tons of energy, passionateje ne peux donc pas y présent, with lots of interractions with the public I know that many fans bought billets for that particular concert because it will be really special. But I will come back to Luxembourg with my big show im the coming months, I promise!

 

It is highly important for you not to copy-paste your show one night after the other. …

 

Mika: But for me, it is just impossible to do the same thing twice , it would be horrible! We even went as far as to change my clothes every night to surprise the public. . Valentino has created a full collection just for me.. And then each country has theur favorite songs so I have to adapt myself.

 

While you tour are you careful or do you totally enjoy it fully?

 

Mika: When I give three concerts three nights in a row, I can't be excessive , but when I can I like to eat in good restaurants , I love to! And I spend so many calories during my concerts that I can allow myself to do it (laughs).

 

You speak numerous languages, will the public at de l’Atelier hear some words in luxembourgeois?

 

Mika: That is so hard! I have tried last time and I was made fun of, but I don't care!

Mika: Mais pour moi, c’est juste impossible de faire deux fois la même chose, c’est horrible! On a même poussé la surprise jusqu’à changer de tenue chaque soir. Valentino a créé une collection complète uniquement pour moi. Et puis chaque pays a ses chansons préférées alors à moi de m’adapter.

when an aggressive brain tumour was diagnosed. The courageous teenager fought during 16 months. Margaux had initiated a fundraising in favor of research, which provoked a huge response of many people showing their solidarity and an unprecedented big number of donations. Her mother, Patricia Blanc, has taken over Margaux's fight through the association Imagine for Margo-Children WithoutCancer. We met its ambassador, the singerMika..

France Dimanche : How did you hear about this association ?

Mika : Thanks to the photographer Peter Lindbergh. He contacted me and asked me if I would join them during a week end in 2014 in order to surprise the « little warriors». Do you know that each year in France, 2 500 children and teenagers are diagnosed with cancer and that 500 die because of cancer, which is more than a child per day ? People are not aware that most research programs are for treatments for adults and that only 2 % of the money funds of the labs who look for new meds are dedicated to search for children cancer. Everyone knows about that illness.But unless someone close to you had to fight against it, people ignore what a dramatic change it creates in the life of those kids and of their families... Most of the times it's very hard, and even more for those who don't get enough support. The association was created at the end of the year 2011. Its president Patricia Blanc, vice-présidente Marie-Anne Aymerich and Dr Dominique Valteau-Couanet [in charge of children and teenagers cancer treatment unit at ’Institut Gustave-Roussy à Villejuif,added by France Dimanche ] have an accute sense of emergency. Mika. : Peter and the association get involved fpr those kids joyfully. And Disney's joy ! This enthousiasm, they are the ones who gave it to me. They are so gifted, or hard, those enfants terribles and warriors . In Camargue, they were totally amazing. We played with a kite on the beach, we built sand castles, we did a shooting . At the restaurant, during the flamenco evening, once they had had enough of flamenco they forced me to sing! Then Noé got up on the stage to replace me. Even if pretty Juliette was tired , I found them very funny. They didn't have any filter when they talked. Then one day, Noé's mother came to see me on The Voice set to tell me about the bad news. Then I got Juliette's mother's letter and she was thanking me because that week end was her daughter's best memory. But Juliette had died too. All the sudden, it was real.. When you witness their will of living, their urge to express themselves and their parents' energy, you forget the outcome .

France Dimanche. : « Go, fight , win ! » What do you think about the message Margaux left us ?

Mika. : One could believe it's a commercial to sell sneakers, but it's heartbreaking whem you know who created that slogan. It is very inspiring for me, when I am in a difficult situation, when I feel excluded, those words come to my mind. It's a very good motivation. On the way back home in the train, Clément wrote to me : « At least, we feel less alone. » I know why those words are so important. This cause isn't known enough , we have to share their messages and get more donations in favor of children cancer.

France Dimanche: Will you take part in the 4th run « Enfants sans cancer » organised by the association on September 27th ?

Mika: No, I will be touring and I won't be able to be at domaine national de Saint-Cloud where this great event will take place. The association has already gathered almost 700 000 euros to fund a treatment targeted to those little adults relapsing.
