Good Wife - Discussion and lyrics

Recommended Posts

From Webster concert thread, last night Mika sang Good Wife for the first time   :swoon:

It's a masterpiece :wub2:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KTRddKpzurQ

Comes on over

Wants to drown his sorrows

Got a two-seater sofa
and some whiskey in a bottle
Broke and in tears
with the weight of the world on his shoulder

Oh my God, Sam
What’s happened to ya?
Says his wife’s just left him
With his two-year-old daughter
To live in Acapulco with some idiot
She only met a couple months ago.

I wish I could tell you that
If it was me, I would be a good wife,
I would never doubt you,
Ours would be a good life
We could be better than so many
I would never stress you
About bringing home the plenty

For all these things
Another life I'll have to wait
Would have been perfect
If only God had wanted it
But you’ll never know it
and we’ll get old,
Let’s not talk about it
rest your head
upon my shoulder

You'll never know, you'll never know
you'll never know the good life,
You'll never know the good life,
You'll never know the good life

Somebody once told me that there are watchers
and there are doers in this world,
I guess I’m a watcher
not by choice
it’s just what I was hurled
We’re just two friends
It's not a risky situation

I wish I could tell you that
If it was me, I would be a good wife,
I would never doubt you,
Ours would be a good life
We could be better than so many
I would never stress you
about bringing home the plenty

For all these things
another life I'll have to wait,
Would have been perfect,
if only God had wanted it,
You’ll never know it
and we’ll get old,
Let’s not talk about it
rest your head upon my shoulder

You'll never know, you'll never know
you'll never know the good life,
You'll never know the good life,
You'll never know the good life

Rest your head upon my shoulder
I'm so tired, you can't see
Now that life’s a little colder
I could love you simply
Even if you’ll never know
Wouldn't leave if it was me
My love would never run away
like the sunshine
Good time friend
not just the good time

For all these things
another life I'll have to wait,
Would have been perfect
if only God had wanted it,
You’ll never know it
and we’ll get old,
Let’s not talk about it
rest your head
upon my shoulder

You'll never know, you'll never know
you'll never know the good life,
You'll never know the good life,
You'll never know the good life

This is what I've got. Still some key things missing. Maybe people who were at the gig will have a clearer idea. I am hearing "sisters" in the opening verse but I am guessing it is something else to set up the story which I am assuming has to do with the man's wife (not anyone's sister)...?

..I know
He wants to drown his sorrows
On (?) a two-seater sofa
And some whiskey in a bottle
Broken tears with the weight of the world on his shoulders
Oh my god ?, what's happened to your ?
Why ?? a two year old daughter
?? the poor girl with some idiot she met a couple months ago

I wish I could tell you that
If it was me I would be a good wife
I would never doubt you
Ours would be a good life
We could be better than so many
I would never stress you
By bringing home the ?
For all these things another life will have to wait
Life could be perfect
If only god had wanted
But we'll never know it
We'll get old
Let's not talk about it
Rest your head upon my shoulder
You'll never know, you'll never know, you'll never know the good life
You'll never know the good life
You'll never know the good life

Somebody once told me that there are watchers and there are doers in this world
Guess I'm a watcher not by choice
It's just what I was...
Just two friends it ain't a risky situation

I wish I could tell you that
If it was me I would be a good wife
I would never doubt you
Ours would be a good life
We could be better than so many

By bringing home the ?

Rest your head upon my shoulder
You'll never know, you'll never know you'll never know the good life
You'll never know the good life
You'll never know the good life

Place your head upon my shoulder
Now that life's a little colder
Even if you'll never know

For all these things another life will have to wait
Life could be perfect
If only god had wanted
But we'll never know it
We'll get old
Let's not talk about it
Rest your head upon my shoulder

He comes on over, wants to drown his sorrows on the,

Two-seat sofa and some whiskey in a bottle

Broken tears with the weight of the world on his shoulders

Driven to Acapulco with some idiot she met a couple months ago.

I wish I could tell you that

If it was me I would be a good wife

I would never doubt you

ours would be a good life

we could be better than so many

I would never stress you about bringing home the plenty

for all these things another life we'll have to wait

our life could be perfect if only God had wanted it

but we'll never know it

we'll get old

let's not talk about rest your head upon my shoulder

you'll never know x2

you'll never know the good life x3

somebody once told me that

there are watchers and there are doers in this world

Guess I'm watcher not by choice

I wish I could tell you that

If it was me I would be a good wife

I would never doubt you

Ours could be a good life

we could be better than so many

I would never stress you about bringing home the plenty

for all these things another life we'll have to wait

our life could be perfect if only God had wanted it

but we'll never know it

we'll get old

let's not talk about

rest you head upon my shoulder

you'll never know x2

you'll never know the good life x3

Rest your head upon my shoulder

Now that life’s a little colder

Even if you’ll never know

My love will never run away just like sunshine

Return only with the good times

For all these things another life we'll have to wait

our life could be perfect if only God had wanted it

But we'll never know it

We'll get old

let's not talk about

rest you head upon my shoulder

you'll never know x2

you'll never know the good life x3

Sounds good :thumb_yello:

Just realized I think it's "rest your head upon my shoulder" instead of "place your head..."

Just want to say I like your signature :)

Thanks! :)  I'm quoting a girl in this vid: 30 seconds to Mars - Closer To The Edge. When I've heard those words I thought "that's totally me!"  :naughty:

I love this song for the first time I heard a bit in that  documentary for " Accès Illimité" instantly I knew it would be one of my favorite songs.

This is what I heard. I couldn't work out the fast part in the bridge, though:

He comes on over, wants to drown his sorrows on the,

Two-seat sofa and some whiskey in a bottle
Broken tears with the weight of the world on his shoulders

Oh my God Sam, what’s happened to your senses?
Wife’s just left with a two year-old daughter
Driven Acapulco with some idiots you met a couple months ago.

I wish I could tell you that
If it was me, I would be a good wife,
I would never doubt you,
Ours would be a good life
We could be better than so many
I would never stress you about bringing home the plenty

For all these things, another life I’ll have to wait,
Life could be perfect, if only God had wanted it,
You’ll never know it, we’ll get old,
Let’s not talk about it, rest your head upon my shoulder

You'll never know, you'll never know, you'll never know the good life,
You'll never know the good life,
You'll never know the good life

Somebody once told me that there are watchers and there are doers in this world,
Guess I’m a watcher, not by choice, it’s just what I deserve,
We’re just two friends, it ain’t a risky situation

I wish I could tell you that
If it was me, I would be a good wife,
I would never doubt you,
Ours would be a good life
We could be better than so many
I would never stress you about bringing home the plenty

For all these things, another life I’ll have to wait,
Life could be perfect, if only God had wanted it,
You’ll never know it, we’ll get old,
Let’s not talk about it, rest your head upon my shoulder

You'll never know, you'll never know, you'll never know the good life,
You'll never know the good life,
You'll never know the good life

Rest your head upon my shoulder
Now that life’s a little colder
Even if you’ll never know
My love will never hurt the sunshine (?)
We’ll keep (?) about the good time

For all these things, another life I’ll have to wait,
Life could be perfect, if only God had wanted it,
You’ll never know it, we’ll get old,
Let’s not talk about it, rest your head upon my shoulder

You'll never know, you'll never know, you'll never know the good life,
You'll never know the good life,
You'll never know the good life

I think Michael has most of it -- he's hearing the same things I'm hearing except in one or two places, which I've marked in red below.

He comes on over, wants to drown his sorrows on the,

Two-seat sofa and some whiskey in a bottle
Broken tears with the weight of the world on his shoulders

Oh my God Sam, what’s happened to your senses?
Wife’s just left with a two year-old daughter
Driven to Acapulco with some idiot she met a couple months ago.

I wish I could tell you that
If it was me, I would be a good wife,
I would never doubt you,
Ours would be a good life
We could be better than so many
I would never stress you about bringing home the plenty

For all these things, another life I'll have to wait,
Life could be perfect, if only God had wanted it,
You’ll never know it, we’ll get old,
Let’s not talk about it, rest your head upon my shoulder

You'll never know, you'll never know, you'll never know the good life,
You'll never know the good life,
You'll never know the good life

Somebody once told me that there are watchers and there are doers in this world,
Guess I’m a watcher, not by choice, it’s just what I ? (I don't think it's deserve, but I can't make out the word)
We’re just two friends, it ain’t a risky situation

I wish I could tell you that
If it was me, I would be a good wife,
I would never doubt you,
Ours would be a good life
We could be better than so many
I would never stress you about bringing home the plenty

For all these things, another life I'll have to wait,
Life could be perfect, if only God had wanted it,
You’ll never know it, we’ll get old,
Let’s not talk about it, rest your head upon my shoulder

You'll never know, you'll never know, you'll never know the good life,
You'll never know the good life,
You'll never know the good life

Rest your head upon my shoulder
Now that life’s a little colder
Even if you’ll never know
My love will never run away just like sunshine
Return only with the good times

For all these things, another life I'll have to wait,
Life could be perfect, if only God had wanted it,
You’ll never know it, we’ll get old,
Let’s not talk about it, rest your head upon my shoulder

You'll never know, you'll never know, you'll never know the good life,
You'll never know the good life,
You'll never know the good life

And in the interest of trying to find the perfect version of the lyrics, here's my version of Good Wife. Unfortunately, either something is wrong with my camera, or the lights were messing with my autofocus, because it keeps going in and out. :(  But the sound is pretty good and you can see Mika's mouth clearly most of the time, which helps when trying to decipher the lyrics.

Thanks guys for the lyrics! My favourite part's when he sings ''For all these things, another life I’ll have to wait''. I don't know why, but when I first listened to the song today, it sounded familiar. Did anyone have the same feeling?

It does sound vaguely familiar, I think that's because it reminds me of another Mika song, but I can't figure out which one....maybe a bit of Blue Eyes  :dunno:
