Mika: «Non denigrate i gay che si vogliono sposare» Dai testi del nuovo disco parte un viaggio intimo nei ricordi: dai problemi a scuola alla volta che rischiò di perdere l'amore alla risposta a chi accusa gli omosessuali di «imborghesimento»

«Qualche tempo fa, ho sentito un tizio che diceva: “Ormai solo i gay vogliono sposarsi”.

Forse voleva fare lo spiritoso ma può essere molto pericoloso denigrare la normalità.

Non stiamo parlando di diventare tutti uguali, stiamo parlando di garantire la libertà di scelta, di proteggere le persone dalle discriminazioni, di dare a tutti gli stessi strumenti per poter riuscire nella vita.

Una volta la comunità gay era più creativa perché emarginata?

Ricordiamoci che l’obiettivo di tutte quelle espressioni artistiche, musicali, letterarie era arrivare all’uguaglianza. Non si è lottato per la normalità, ma per gli stessi diritti.

Ci sono posti nel mondo dove uomini e donne vengono linciati, persino uccisi, perché omosessuali.

Dire che la normalizzazione dell’omosessualità ha reso i gay meno creativi sarebbe come dire che la lotta per l’eguaglianza fra i sessi ha reso le donne meno interessanti».

 

Da otto anni sto con la stessa persona ma se allora mi avessero chiesto:

"Può durare?" mi sarei messo a ridere.

 

Questa la risposta di Mika a chi accusa i gay di «imborghesimento»,

uno dei passaggi della storia di copertina del numero di Vanity Fair in edicola mercoledì 20 maggio. Nell’intervista, il musicista si sofferma sui suoi ricordi d’infanzia e sulla sua famiglia, alcuni dei temi al centro del libro che sta scrivendo e che uscirà in autunno.

Nato a Beirut ma evacuato piccolissimo per sfuggire alla guerra civile,

Mika ha vissuto prima in Francia e poi, dai 9 anni in avanti, in Inghilterra.

Di quei tempi ricorda, tra le altre cose, le difficoltà riscontrate a scuola:

«Da bambino la odiavo, perché non riuscivo a leggere e a scrivere e il sistema scolastico francese era piuttosto crudele.

Quando siamo andati a vivere in Inghilterra e ho iniziato a frequentare una scuola a Londra, mi sono sentito dire: “Non sei stupido, sei dislessico”.

Era la prima volta.

Nel giro di poco passai dall’insufficienza al massimo dei voti. Però, cominciarono a considerarmi diverso per altri motivi.

Nell’istituto francese che frequentavo, tutti indossavano l’uniforme, mentre in quello inglese non era richiesta. Iniziai a indossare i miei vestiti e lì arrivarono i problemi.

Mi presentavo con il papillon e le camice a pois.

Oggi vesto in maniera piuttosto normale e a volte mi domando se, alla fine, abbiano vinto loro, mi dico:

“Forse sono davvero riusciti a cambiarmi”». Parlando del suo nuovo album (No Place in Heaven, in uscita il 15 giugno), spiega che uno dei brani, The Last Party, è ispirato alla festa che Freddy Mercury organizzò subito dopo aver scoperto di avere l’Aids e di come scrivere quella canzone l’abbia spinto a riflettere sul modo in cui lui stesso reagì a una notizia terribile come l’incidente accaduto a sua sorella Paloma nel 2010. «Una sua amica bussò alla mia porta alle quattro del mattino.

Mi disse che mia sorella era precipitata dalla finestra del suo appartamento.

Ero in boxer e T-shirt, corsi fuori, senza vestiti, senza scarpe. La polizia mi bloccò.

Mi dissero che potevo scegliere: aspettare che arrivasse l’ambulanza o andare da lei subito. Pensai che dovevo vedere con i miei occhi che cosa era successo per poter affrontare la situazione.

Da allora non sopporto le persone che bussano. Fuori dal mio camerino c’è sempre un cartello: “Non bussate”».

«Come ho reagito a quello che ero successo?», si domanda poi. «All’inizio in maniera razionale: ho cancellato tutti i miei impegni di lavoro per rimanere vicino a lei. Poi, appena ho saputo che non era in pericolo di vita, sono scappato.

Ho preso un volo per Montréal. La prima notte che trascorsi là scrissi Underwater, il giorno dopo Origin Of Love. Non sapevo che cosa avrei fatto dopo».

Mika racconta anche che, prima di partire, aveva detto addio al suo compagno, il film-maker di origini greco-inglesi Andreas Dermanis, con cui ha una relazione da otto anni. 

«Gli ho detto che non sarei più tornato. È stata l’unica volta che ci siamo lasciati.

Per riconquistarlo ho dovuto darmi parecchio da fare. Quando mi ha rivisto non mi ha detto: “Prego, accomodati”».
