Con ese primer sencillo comenzó a ganar popularidad en todo el mundo y, a decir verdad, es una canción con la virtud de dejarte más relajado y con ganas de bailar; el tema se posicionó rápidamente en nuestro país en la mayoría de los centros nocturnos. Ese lanzamiento fue en 2006. Tuvieron que pasar 10 años para que el británico de gran potencia vocal, que aún sorprende no sólo por su música, sino por su espíritu agradable y modesto, llegara a nuestro país emocionado de pisar suelo azteca y dispuesto a tocar las puertas para pronto realizar un concierto en algún foro importante de la ciudad. Su primera línea antes de comenzar fue: “Dame un segundo, debo llamar a mi mamá”. Ese detalle nos causó simpatía y nos puso a pensar que era el mismo Mika que ganó premios como Artista Revelación Británico en los Brit Awards de 2008; también quien fue nominado al premio Grammy por su tema “Love Today”, y en 2009 lanzó un segundo EP: Songs for sorrow, una edición limitada que actualmente se encuentra agotada, entre otros reconocimientos que tiene en su lista. De vuelta para realizar la charla era inevitable ver sus grandes ojos llenos de alegría y su outfit colorido, con un blazer Valentino, el cual fue parte esencial de esta sesión fotográfica. ¿Cómo te sientes de estar aquí?, muchas fans hacen todo por verte… Es muy emocionante, quiero agradecer a los fans, y la mejor manera de hacerlo es con un pequeño show. Me da pavor porque no sé cómo resultará, pues son 10 años de no venir a México. Pero ofrecer un espectáculo aquí es la mejor manera de tocar la puerta nuevamente y de acercarte al público. Quiero hacer un concierto acústico para tocar lo que quieran, será divertido. ¿Cuál es la esencia de “Hurts”, tu nuevo sencillo? Empieza como una canción de amor, pero se relaciona con todas esas palabras que te hieren, porque mucha gente dice que se olvida, pero no es cierto, hay cosas que nunca se van, es difícil olvidar lo que sientes, por ello le doy valor a las palabras, son muy importantes. Esta vez me pongo frente a un pizarrón con insultos escritos en la pared, y en el video se muestra la historia de tres muchachos que sufren bullying, pero no se doblegan ante esto y todo termina con una gran fiesta. Siempre es bueno ver un final feliz, ésta es mi manera de hablar sobre esto. Los primeros dos discos que lanzaste tenían un tono más adolescente, y éste es un poco más maduro, ¿cómo describirías el álbum? El cuarto álbum es resultado de un concepto mucho más positivo, más abierto. Por supuesto hubo un cambio, y es que después de los 30 años piensas las cosas de otra manera. Me prometí a mí mismo no aislarme tanto y lanzarme a las cosas con más franqueza, sin preocupaciones. Formé un pequeño estudio de diseño con mi hermana y empecé a dibujar de nuevo, como antes en la cocina de la casa de mi madre, quería nuevos desafíos; luego salió este álbum, que lo siento con una esencia más sincera, libre, directa. Me parece que es un pop más maduro, tengo una gran inspiración de la música de los años 60, algo que también tiene mi primer disco. Una de tus canciones llama la atención porque repite varias veces “¿dónde han ido todos los chicos homosexuales?”, ¿qué pensaste al escribirla? Obviamente se refiere al tema. Me parecía divertido hablar de esto abiertamente. Mientras grababa el álbum, en algún momento miré alrededor y dije: “Dios mío, ustedes básicamente han hecho la mayor parte de la música pop en el mundo”; dos de ellos sólo habían estado en el gimnasio, y yo los miraba un minuto y comenté: “Eso está muy bien, pero ¿dónde han ido todos los chicos homosexuales?”. Y me miraron con una cara muy inexpresiva. Cuando me senté a escribir, pensé en esa conversación y me di cuenta que no era tan raro o tan tonto como parecía. Era casi como un mensaje a mí mismo. ¿Dónde están las personas que me inspiraron cuando tenía 15 años, todos estos héroes que yo había mantenido tan alto? ¿Dónde están ahora? ¿Cómo capturo eso? ¿Cómo puedo estar en el canon de esos hombres que realmente vivieron sus vidas sin sentir consecuencias? Fue un momento emocionante para mí pensar: “Bien, lo haré. Voy a ir allí. Voy a tratar de ser como la persona que siempre desee, que tendría el valor de ser cuando era más joven”. Es el proceso para la confrontación con uno mismo. ¿Crees que la industria musical ha aceptado esto ahora? Hace unos 50 años la sociedad era un poco más intolerante, no había libertad de expresión; incluso se tenía que ser más matizado en ciertas culturas y más discreto. La música siempre fue un ámbito para la aceptación política y socio-política en lo que se refiere a la sexualidad. Hay sectores, como la literatura, donde uno se puede descubrir a sí mismo. Pero en el sentido de aceptación quiero ser positivo y creer que la música es un medio tolerante para combatir esto. Ahora, desde la perspectiva de los medios de comunicación, es diferente. Creo que es muy bueno y se está haciendo mucho mejor, pero todavía debemos avanzar, y soy muy consciente de ello. En los medios, el ideal es una falta de reactividad y ni siquiera una mención. Por lo tanto, no importa la sexualidad o el sexo de quien cante un tema de amor porque no afecta el formato de la canción. Creo que la manera de llegar es buena música. También destaca tu gusto por la moda, se nota que eres un hombre de accesorios, y nos queda claro que amas Valentino… Sí, ahora me gusta usar pulseras de colores y me encanta este tipo de accesorios de la cultura musulmana; ahora traigo una mano de Fátima, con pompones de colores. Con Valentino he trabajado con los vestuarios para mis shows; me encanta su estilo y sabe perfectamente cuál es mi estilo. Me fascina que tenga tanto color y sea una combinación entre algo sastre. Dejé las t-shirts atrás y uso más blazers, como el de ahora. También sabemos de tu colaboración con Swatch, y se especulaba que seguirías teniendo alguna participación… Claro, en la primera colección que se lanzó con mi imagen, yo no diseñé los relojes, trabajé de la mano de Swatch; pero ahora tenía un secreto guardado: haremos una línea que cuenta con una inspiración distinta; tiene una especie de pirámide, sé que les gustará a todos en México. Este reloj se lanzó recientemente por Swatch bajo el nombre de Mumu by Mika, y cuenta con un lujoso grabado dorado en su caja y una llamativa pulsera de silicona con artísticos grabados por ambos lados que parten de un diseño de una máscara totémica; será una edición especial. ¿Qué habrá para un probable show en México? Me gusta la idea de los grandes escenarios, hice uno increíble recientemente en París, lleno de luces, pirotecnia y colores; me encanta que haya gran energía y producción, siempre tengo un análisis del lugar para poder hacer un formato maravilloso, así que eso espero poder traer pronto a México. En su pasada visita, Mika ofreció un concierto acústico en la Ciudad de México, donde demostró por qué es uno de los artistas más aclamados de Europa.
