Mika in Baalbek

I had never heard of the Temple of Bacchus. I booked my ticket for the Mika concert in Baalbek last minute, but I did not expect the scenery where classical Roman architecture would mix with British-Lebanese glam rock. Joined by German and Dutch acquaintances I had met in Byblos the prior week and who told me they were also going to the concert, I wandered around Heliopolis all afternoon before the event, frantically taking pictures of the Corinthian columns while reverently gazing at the refined reliefs and sculpture that populate the site.

A longtime fan of Mika, I expected the subsequent concert to be a blast, and so it was. The rhythm, the enthusiasm, and the well-formed songs were enhanced by the underlying pride of being Lebanese that Mika never ceases to express through his words and actions. Throughout his performance, Mika was either wearing a tarbouche or carrying the Lebanese flag, the London native decisively upheld the kind of ‘secrets’ that I started to dig out in Beiteddine the night before. The simple joy of dancing around, an act of mirth that I imagined had regularly repeated itself, there, not 30 kilometers from the Syrian border beyond which so much pain had been unfolding over the past years; that was the kind of experience and realization that definitively changed my perception of Lebanon. There, in Baalbek, amongst fellow Lebanese enjoying music produced by a Lebanese artist, I discovered that one could efficiently resist the terror and pain with smiles and pop tunes.

Being regions apart from one another, what these two events had nonetheless in common – apart from being, innocuously enough, sponsored by the Société Générale de Banque au Liban – was the depth of the lessons they had offered me. Bassem Youssef’s reception by the Lebanese marked me, as it clearly showcased the open-mindedness that people naturally develop when presented with like-minded views of different contexts. Mika’s attachment to his Lebanese roots, and the importance he subsequently endowed to the city of Baalbek, were a testimony to the Lebanese cultural identity; an identity that’s built on the integration of multiple opinions and tastes, all the while remaining strong and proud.

The night ride from Heliopolis to Zahle, where I booked a hostel room for three nights, was filled with the sense of having spent two magical evenings in a row. Following the experiences of Bassem Youssef’s wit and courage and Mika’s creativity and energy, the sight of the Bekaa Valley felt like an invitation for further discovery. I had a sense that it was what the following days would be all about. I could not help but feel exhilarated.

:thumb_yello:  Thank you SO much Eriko - for all this great stuff from Baalbek!!   It's great reading -  I love how the art "Mika in Baalbek" put things into perspective! And I'm happy that MIKA does these gigs, and find time for "his own people" in Lebanon...   The concert arena looks fantastic!!  :)  And NaoMika: I often talk about "velvet air" - it's when the air is soft, with the right temp - and you feel you can  almost "hold it in your hand" :)  Maybe "velvet sky" means something similar... :wink2:
