Really a lot. When I’m travelling to southern Italy I feel as if there are two countries. One leaning towards the Mediterranean sea and one towards Mitteleurope. I’ve not understood so far what keeps the two together: they have the Queen in the UK, the President and the myth of capitalism in the US, but what about Italian people? It looks a bit similar to the Arabian countries They do have a worse situation. They built borders which ripped families apart, destroyed whole ethnicities, they forced Bedu tribes to establish. A real hell. For me especially, being someone who feels a bit nomad and country less. Don’t you think that immigration discussions have reached hysteria? No, I don’t think so. Italians show their generosity even in the little thing. On the other side, I find hysteria in England, in the press and in the politicians’ speeches. Can we expect a new album, after the TV show? Eppure, confessa: «nel privato vivo diviso tra la piena libertà che ho raggiunto e il problema di essere accettato al 100%» Mika è un ragazzo che non si nasconde. Non l’ha mai fatto. Si è dichiarato omosessuale quando per la maggior parte dei suoi colleghi il coming out era un tabù. Ha confessato la sua dislessia, e di non vergognarsi se ne soffre ancora. Ha raccontato i momenti in cui, a scuola, veniva bullizzato dai compagni, e di come ha saputo reagire: «Considerato il mio problema, bastava dire loro che non valeva la pena prendersela con uno “legalmente stupido”». Forse è la naturalezza con cui parla di sé ad averlo avvicinato così tanto al pubblico. Anche nella sua carriera non ha fatto errori (tranne, forse, un “no” al prossimo Festival di Sanremo). La gente vuole bene anche a te: metti tutti d’accordo, praticamente non hai haters. Io non la vivo così. Tanti non apprezzano la mia musica, altri mi attaccano per le mie opinioni. Però su una cosa ti seguo: ho un pubblico molto trasversale, forse perché per ciascuno rappresento qualcosa di diverso. La discriminazione sulla base della sessualità va smontata in tutti i modi possibili: con la musica, con le risate, ma anche con una conversazione aperta e onesta. Ogni volta che una persona pubblica si schiera senza vergogna, si accende una piccola stella che può diventare un faro per qualcun altro. L’importante è farlo serenamente: per me è stato così, ma non sono mancati i momenti difficili. Anch’io mi sono preso il mio tempo prima di fare coming out, sia con me stesso sia in famiglia. Paradossalmente, il successo da giovane non è stato un freno, anzi l’occasione per imporre a tutti ciò che ero. Ma ancora oggi nel mio privato vivo diviso tra la piena libertà che ho raggiunto e il problema di essere accettato al 100%. Quando ti succede? Con alcune persone della mia famiglia ho ancora difficoltà ad affrontare apertamente la mia sessualità. So che probabilmente non mi lascerò mai andare ad un contatto fisico con il mio compagno (il regista Andreas Dermanis, ndr) di fronte a mia nonna. È una donna di un’altra generazione, rispetto la sua sensibilità. A una famiglia tua ci pensi? La mia famiglia è il mio fidanzato, e poi quella in cui sono nato, e il clan che si crea quando lavoro. Forse non penso ancora ai figli perché non ho mai sofferto la morte di una persona cara. Quando succederà, magari mi verrà più naturale cercare di riempire quel vuoto affettivo. Cosa ti ha regalato l’Italia? Una qualità che a voi a volte sfugge: il senso della fantasia, anche negli adulti. È un sentimento che in Inghilterra, dove sono cresciuto, non esiste più. Quand’ero ragazzo uscivo a Londra tutte le sere e respiravo un boom di creatività. Tutti gli stilisti si formavano lì. Nella musica c’erano Amy Winehouse, Lily Allen, io stesso ho potuto incidere un primo disco che era una provocazione su temi importanti, ma nascosta dietro un caleidoscopio di colori. Oggi è tutto più tranquillo, c’è molta omologazione, anche le canzoni raccontano sempre la stessa storia d’amore. Che noia. Dove ti immagini tra qualche anno? In posti che possano assecondare questo desiderio di follia. Ora ho scelto l’Italia e la Francia, Paesi in cui il sangue scorre più caldo, dove posso ritrovare l’enfant terrible che è in me. A 34 anni non sono lo stesso ragazzino naïf e giocoso che cantava Lollipop, ma quella parte infantile di me non deve morire mai. Io andrò a inseguire il mio enfant terrible in ogni luogo del mondo che mi permetterà di ritrovarlo. Si è dichiarato omosessuale quando per la maggior parte dei suoi colleghi il coming out era un tabù. Ha confessato la sua dislessia, e di non vergognarsi se ne soffre ancora. Ha raccontato i momenti in cui, a scuola, veniva bullizzato dai compagni, e di come ha saputo reagire: «Considerato il mio problema, bastava dire loro che non valeva la pena prendersela con uno “legalmente stupido”». Forse è la naturalezza con cui parla di sé ad averlo avvicinato così tanto al pubblico. Anche nella sua carriera non ha fatto errori (tranne, forse, un “no” al prossimo Festival di Sanremo). Prima era un “semplice” cantante, poi un incontestabile giudice a X-Factor, adesso il conduttore di Stasera casa Mika, il one-man-show prodotto da Ballandi Multimedia che torna su RaiDue dal 31 ottobre, fresco del premio come miglior programma d’intrattenimento del 2016 ai Rose d’Or Awards di Berlino. «Sono contento per la squadra, ma per me qualsiasi vittoria dura un attimo: penso subito a quello che farò dopo» mi dice. Si sente in sottofondo un’ansia costante. «È il sentimento che mi guida. Essere nervoso mi provoca eccitazione, mi fa restare creativo». Anche il ritorno di Stasera casa Mika ti mette ansia? No, perché posso contare su un team ancora più affiatato. Mi piace ritrovarmi tutte le mattine in riunione con 40 persone per decidere cosa portare in scena. Dai costumi alle scenografie alle luci, tutto è frutto di un lavoro artigianale in cui ciascuno mette un pezzo di sé. Il nostro è uno spettacolo “old school”, come quelli che guardavo da piccolo. Quali show vedevi da bambino? Ero affascinato da cerimonie come quella degli Oscar, una notte magica, dove tutto era possibile. Ho una visione romantica della Tv, mi piace creare questo senso di meraviglia. Per farlo uso i contrasti: ci sono momenti intimi accanto ad esibizioni musicali, numeri di grandissima produzione vicino a intervalli comici. Quest’anno la “quota comica” è affidata a Luciana Littizzetto. Ci conosciamo da anni, non ci serve un copione. Quando sono con lei, per me è facile essere me stesso. Amo la sua capacità di essere tenera e graffiante insieme. Luciana può dire qualunque cosa perché la gente le vuole bene, sa che ci mette sempre il cuore. La gente vuole bene anche a te: metti tutti d’accordo, praticamente non hai haters. Io non la vivo così. Tanti non apprezzano la mia musica, altri mi attaccano per le mie opinioni. Però su una cosa ti seguo: ho un pubblico molto trasversale, forse perché per ciascuno rappresento qualcosa di diverso. Arrivo alle donne perché so comunicare con loro, essendo cresciuto in un vero matriarcato (ride). Alcuni mi seguono come musicista, altri come personaggio televisivo, altri ancora condividono il mio impegno in fatto di diritti civili. Qual è la prossima mossa? Chi lo sa. Magari uno spettacolo a teatro, o forse il cinema. Mai come regista: non ho né la disciplina né la pazienza adatte. Mi vedo di più come attore, ma solo se il progetto nascesse da una mia idea. Non ho mai fatto nulla che non fosse partito dalla mia immaginazione. Tornando alle tue opinioni, in Italia sei oggi considerato un testimonial dei diritti civili. La discriminazione sulla base della sessualità va smontata in tutti i modi possibili: con la musica, con le risate, ma anche con una conversazione aperta e onesta. Ogni volta che una persona pubblica si schiera senza vergogna, si accende una piccola stella che può diventare un faro per qualcun altro. L’importante è farlo serenamente: per me è stato così, ma non sono mancati i momenti difficili. Anch’io mi sono preso il mio tempo prima di fare coming out, sia con me stesso sia in famiglia. Paradossalmente, il successo da giovane non è stato un freno, anzi l’occasione per imporre a tutti ciò che ero. Ma ancora oggi nel mio privato vivo diviso tra la piena libertà che ho raggiunto e il problema di essere accettato al 100%. Quando ti succede? Con alcune persone della mia famiglia ho ancora difficoltà ad affrontare apertamente la mia sessualità. So che probabilmente non mi lascerò mai andare ad un contatto fisico con il mio compagno (il regista Andreas Dermanis, ndr) di fronte a mia nonna. È una donna di un’altra generazione, rispetto la sua sensibilità. A una famiglia tua ci pensi? La mia famiglia è il mio fidanzato, e poi quella in cui sono nato, e il clan che si crea quando lavoro. Forse non penso ancora ai figli perché non ho mai sofferto la morte di una persona cara. Quando succederà, magari mi verrà più naturale cercare di riempire quel vuoto affettivo. Cosa ti ha regalato l’Italia? Una qualità che a voi a volte sfugge: il senso della fantasia, anche negli adulti. È un sentimento che in Inghilterra, dove sono cresciuto, non esiste più. Quand’ero ragazzo uscivo a Londra tutte le sere e respiravo un boom di creatività. Tutti gli stilisti si formavano lì. Nella musica c’erano Amy Winehouse, Lily Allen, io stesso ho potuto incidere un primo disco che era una provocazione su temi importanti, ma nascosta dietro un caleidoscopio di colori. Oggi è tutto più tranquillo, c’è molta omologazione, anche le canzoni raccontano sempre la stessa storia d’amore. Che noia. Dove ti immagini tra qualche anno? In posti che possano assecondare questo desiderio di follia. Ora ho scelto l’Italia e la Francia, Paesi in cui il sangue scorre più caldo, dove posso ritrovare l’enfant terrible che è in me. A 34 anni non sono lo stesso ragazzino naïf e giocoso che cantava Lollipop, ma quella parte infantile di me non deve morire mai. Io andrò a inseguire il mio enfant terrible in ogni luogo del mondo che mi permetterà di ritrovarlo. E magari solo a 70 anni tornerò ad essere davvero il bambino che ero. Wow, it´s really good.
