THE VOICE

The Voice

Jurés : on solde !

Obispo immediately adopted

The new coach of "The Voice" has successfully entered the arena of the 7th season. We attended the recording of the first blind auditions on Monday night.

I have never had the jitters of my life so much. It's a catastrophe. I'm never going to type

Or 14 times for the first talent. Pascal Obispo does not lead off, just minutes from the recording of his first blind auditions on Monday night. For this 7th season, which will be broadcast in early 2018 on TF 1, the interpreter of "Lucie" joins Mika, Zazie and Florent Pagny, succeeding Mr. Pokora.

8:50 pm, at Plaine-Saint-Denis. Hearing the first notes of "Should I Stay or Should I Go", Clash, the new coach presses with a heel on the red button: the first of the 27 talents of the evening (140 in total) is a Métis 25-year-old ultra-sexy with a powerful voice. The "The Voice" syndrome, which wants the band's freak to be feverish at the buzzer, has hit again. "I could not help it, says the singer with glasses to the beautiful candidate. I felt that there was a lot of desire. Besides, you are still out of breath. At the last second, Mika also returned. Between them, we understand that it's going to be war. But Pascal Obispo wins this first battle. And when a 22-year-old singer seduces the four coaches with a piano version of Jacques Brel's "Chanson des vieux amants", it is Pascal Obispo who wins the bet. "There, you annoy me," Zazie shoots. "It's strategic, Pascal analysis, 55 years, in the audience. The singers know that he is a great songwriter. "Rebelote an hour later: after igniting the audience with a tube of Diam's, a trio of hip-hop singers choose in turn the new juror. "That's it, you've got 4," Florent Pagny shoots. You will not be able to play during two broadcasts. Obispo's answer, who takes himself to the game: "Ah, is it true? Can I go home, then? "

The first doubts are raised, Pascal Obispo may have the stage fright, he has a sacred side with the candidates. After a warm-up, Matt Pokora's replacement dances, beats the pace with his feet, imitates the footballers when they score a goal and even pushes for joy to celebrate his victories. At 23 hours, he already has 5 talents in his team, when the others have 2 or 3.

A wise old man arrives, barefoot and guitar in hand. A musical UFO with his make-up and feathered scarf spotted in New Caledonia. "We wanted to mix different worlds and styles, behind the scenes Matthieu Grelier, the producer of ITV Studios France. it's like a box of Quality Street. Zazie buzze, then Mika and Florent Pagny. In turn, the new boy turns around. For the first time, he takes a jacket.

Pascal Obispo's thing is emotion. "I heard the heart," he tells a candidate. And to another: "No need for explanations when I hear something pure and beautiful. In the stands, the feeling goes. Overall. "There is a lack of precision in his criticisms, however, notes Laure, 40 years. It makes me think of Jenifer. It gets stuck when he slips into his chair, crosses his arms, turns off when the others are doing the show ...

It is 1 am, the last candidate has just passed. Nikos Aliagas questions Pascal Obispo on his impressions. "We get used quickly, fun the new coach. I am very happy. And most importantly, I do not want to disappoint. We were not disappointed.

The other coaches find him shy

still shy, but it's a shyness that will disappear very quickly, believes Zazie. He must just tame this box that is called If it is called because it is one of the best melodists of the last twenty years. Florent Pagny appreciates seeing his colleague in this perilous exercise: "Usually he is less shy, but it's funny to see him like that. That he is still a little! Mika, he does not know yet on which foot to dance. When he buzzed on a crazy candidate taking "Becassine, it's my cousin", Pascal Obispo was the first to chamber it. "He's very benevolent with talent but not so much with me," smiled Mika. He is very naughty. He is also very funny, but it is not seen yet. Florent Pagny concludes: "Pascal should have been there long before. "

 "Pascal should have been there long before. "

Meet Mika - 'I'm an immigrant and proud of that'

Mika erupted onto the world’s musical stage in 2007 with multi-million-selling debut album, Life in Cartoon Motion. Nick Rowswell caught up with Mika at this year’s Printemps de Bourges festival.

By Nick Rowswell

MIKA’s family moved to Paris from war-torn Beirut in 1984. His parents are American, but his mother’s family is Lebanese. He is a fluent French speaker, having been schooled in France until he was nine and then at the Lycée Français Charles de Gaulle in London when the family moved to England.

Still, he never remained far from France, as his family used to take regular holidays at his aunt’s home in Villeneuve-Loubet on the Côte d’Azur.

So, who is Mika?

That’s a question I ask myself everyday, and there is no single answer. I come from nowhere and everywhere.

There has never been one single place that I’ve grown up that I can really call home.
I guess in many ways I’m an immigrant, and I’m proud of that. Born in Beirut, I feel just as much at home in England as I do in France or Italy. English, French, Lebanese? I’m not sure of my true identity, so that’s why I make music, to get some sense of identity.

What about your musical style? You seem to have been given many different musical labels, including pop, rock, jazz and even glam rock

I suppose my musical style reflects my different experiences. I am first and foremost a songwriter telling stories through my music, and each story needs a different theme tune.

You recently did a couple of shows entitled The Art of Song on BBC Radio 2.

Tell us about that

I did the first show on New Year’s Day and then another in late March of this year. It was basically a programme about songwriters; I got to play tracks from my favourite songwriters and look at the stories behind the songs. You know, when you look at songwriters, we’re all the same, coming from everywhere and nowhere, we are not in life, but on the outside looking in, telling stories from our peripheral perspective.

From choirboy to judge on the French and Italian equivalents of The Voice. What’s the best way to make it in music, join a choir or go on a TV talent show?

Both are important. I was head choirboy at my school in London. I can still sing the mass in Latin – and on my first casting for a TV talent show, I didn’t even make it past the first audition.
There isn’t one single road to success. There is only individual ambition, the will to succeed and the willingness to take risks.

You’re playing a lot of festivals in France over the summer, what can you tell us about the show?

There will be stripped down minimalist staging with all the emphasis on the music.

Finally a few words of advice for wannabe Mikas...

I would say, never be ashamed of what you do or who you are and be proud of your music.

Catch Mika at the following events this month

July 8, Albi Festival Pause Guitare;

July 13, Les Francofollies, La Rochelle;

July 16, Festival de Nîmes;

July 19, Festival de Carcassonne;

July 20, Festival du Château, Solliès-Pont
