Mika ha sido uno de los pocos auténticos fenómenos en el mundo de la música, y en tiempos en que los éxitos ya no se miden por las ventas de los álbumes, el intérprete de “Ice Cream” y “Love Today” nos tiene esperando con delirio, color y alegría lo que sea que ahora se vaya a aventar . Ya son muchos años desde que el músico de origen libanés e inglés demostró que el verdadero y extraordinario pop (no, no es una contradicción de términos) está más vivo que nunca. Y aunque es difícil superar sus primeros éxitos mundiales, como lo fueron “Love Today” o “Lollypop”, no ha dejado de crear y superarse. Ni los 20 minutos de retraso, ni la lluvia que golpeó la ciudad lograron que la gente no se uniera a la fiesta de Mika, una en la que se celebró al amor en todas sus formas. El concierto comenzó con “Ice Cream”, canción de su más reciente álbum My Name Is Michael Holbrook (2019). La gente no esperó ni dudó ni un segundo en entregarle toda su energía al cantante de origen líbano-británico, quien desde el principio del show prometió que durante el concierto sólo se dirigiría al público en idioma español, uno que por cierto ha mejorado bastante. Mika es un showman en toda la extensión de la palabra, y en serio tiene energía a más no poder. El hombre canta, interpreta, toca el piano, se sube a él, salta, corre de un lado a otro y no duda con compartir esa vitalidad con sus fans hasta donde le sea posible. Incluso si eso implica subir a una fan al escenario para bailar juntos o usar un sombrero charro. Al final, Mika sabe que su fanbase en México es solida, y quiere que ellos no tengan duda de que los ama. El regreso de Mika a nuestro país, luego de 12 años, estuvo lleno de canciones como “Relax (Take It Easy)”, “Origin of Love”, “Big Girl (You Are Beautiful)”, “Tiny Love”, “Popular Song”, y hasta “We Are Golden”, una pieza que al parecer varios no esperaban en el show, pues desató mucha euforia entre los asistentes del concierto, que cabe mencionar eran de todas las edades. Sin embargo, este show también estuvo lleno de mucha emotividad. Por un lado, Mika nos guió e inspiró a cantarle al amor, a celebrar quienes somos y lo mucho que nuestra energía positiva puede aportar al mundo. Por el otro, el cantante también nos llevó a encontrar ese lado vulnerable que tenemos, a abrazarlo y aceptarlo. Al final del día esa debilidad, que a veces no nos gusta, también forma parte de nosotros. Mika concluyó con “Grace Kelly”, “Tiny Love” (una parte de la canción), y “Stay high”, donde de alguna manera pidió a sus fans que, ahora que estaban recargados con amor, se mantuvieran así. Al fin y al cabo, ese parecer ser el propósito de Mika: contagiar amor y energía. Al menos así nos hizo sentir a sus fans en la CDMX. Antes de salir y dejar el escenario al que le entregó todo, Mika cantó “Cielito Lindo” usando el sombrero que sacó a la mitad de su show, provocando que todos nos enamoráramos más de él. Muchos de los temas que integraron a la obra es propaganda anti-nazi. Lucharon de forma muy abierta contra las ideologías fascistas. De eso nacieron los superhéroes. Es interesantes porque ves a Marvel y puedes olvidar que estos pequeños dibujos, estos personajes ficticios, nacieron de una necesidad desesperada que tenía la sociedad por tener arquetipos que pudieran inspirar y hacerte sentir en una forma popular, unificadora, que hay luchas que pelear. Siempre hay batallas. Hoy hay tantas por luchar. Creo que estamos en un tiempo en el cual nos dirigimos a una de las eras más obscuras de los últimos 100 años. División, polarización, separación, un incremento de odio. Estos héroes usados de la forma adecuada pueden ser ejemplos muy útiles del cómo provocar una comunión de espíritu, que es la única forma en la cual puedes combatir esta cultura de odio y explotación en la cual podemos estar viviendo. Son una forma de introducir nuevos ideales a la gente… Sí, exactamente. Y unificar. ¿Tú crees que las figuras musicales populares, como tú, pueden tener esa misma capacidad de crear un cambio? Por definición, hay algo similar respecto a estos personajes ficticios y la idea de convertirte en un artista. No lo hace menos creíble o menor real, pero hay una similitud. Hablando desde una visión completamente personal, por un tiempo dejé de componer, me enojé mucho debido a la industria de la música. No quería escribir, nunca lo hice para ser comercial. Nada de lo que he hecho que ha tenido éxito de forma comercial ha sido diseñado para forzar ese éxito. Yo escribo música como si fuera una medicina. Cuando camino por el escenario, también ha cambiado mi energía como showman. Ha cambiado la forma en cómo mi audiencia me responde. Así que volviendo a la idea central de tu pregunta sobre los superhéroes, creo que todo se resume en identificar el súper-poder que tienes en ti mismo, ser completamente honesto al respecto, y provocar esta comunión de energía en la cual te sientes como si no fueras un pedazo de mierda. Nothing I have done that has been successful commercially has been designed to force that success. I write music as if it were a medicine. Before recording my next album, I felt like so many things were happening in the world that I don't know how to handle. Things then began to happen in my personal life, I lost five people, they died during the process of making this album. Diseases. All these things pushed me to write again. To write songs, record a new album. This is something that had not happened to me since the first album. I wrote that one as a medicine for the horrible stage I was having in college. I was not happy with school, my personal life, my sexuality, all that. I made this album to handle all the s**t that life threw at me, so both are similar, but that also freed me. I realized that I could write something that was full of melody, color, joy, lyrics that are sad. All this made me very free. It also made me realize that I should not feel despicable. It must be weird for you, you can see me as if I had a nice career, but you still feel like s**t most of the time. That has changed my energy, it has changed who I am as a composer, not as if I were someone else, but to get closer to the person I was before adulthood came and told me - you have to be this. When I walk the stage, my energy as a showman has also changed. It has changed the way my audience responds to me. So going back to the central idea of your question about superheroes, I think it all comes down to identifying the super-power you have in yourself, being completely honest about it, and provoking this communion of energy in which you feel as if You weren't a piece of s**t. In this case, what is your particular superpower? Humm. When I am in my best moments, you cannot say if I am being violent, vulgar, good, bad, cheerful, or madly sad. You can't guess, you just don't care. When I enter that place, whether it is an album or a stage, I know that I am transparent. I know that I am emotional in the best possible way, and that is as powerful as polite. You said something that moved me a lot in your concert, you said you didn't have the opportunity to compose many songs because you were jealous of the Mika of the past. Are you now at peace with your youngest self? I have made peace with my person from the past and also with many other things in my life. By making those peace, I have allowed myself to compose material that stands up and that can be combined perfectly with my first album. Both Mika’s can stand side by side and look great together. They go hand in hand, this idea of being jealous of yourself is very rare. There's a song called ‘Dear Jealousy’ that says - I'm jealous of the man I was and the man I can become. Jealousy is a debilitating force, a condition that paralyzes you. You have to confront this openly, it is very useful. You are talking about these two albums, those two Mika’s, not as if they were opposite poles, but as if they had particular differences. What do you think are the most obvious differences between the two? If I had to describe it, these two albums that have been the pillars of my career so far, album one and album five, Life In Cartoon Motion (2006) and My Name Is Michael Holbrook (2019), I would say that the spirit is the same, and that is what makes them special. The difference is growth, number five is more mature than number one, but growing up maintaining that spirit or refining it is a fundamental responsibility for anyone who does something. Be a painter, a writer, a carpenter, whatever. Allowing you to grow, but without reducing the spirit of who you are is a complicated dance. I understand what you're saying… Were you at the show? Yes Why were you surprised? Because I was waiting for someone singing in a less energetic way, you were very energetic and colorful. I think it was a lively show, it was full of balloons, people shouted ... Do you know what surprised me about the show? That there was nothing in him. Nothing, no set, no confetti. People brought their own balloons, their own paper planes. I didn't bring anything, everything was the life that people brought with them. I took it and everything was improvised, even the illuminator was a local person from Plaza Condesa who had never seen one of my shows. Everything was like a happening, it gave him that sense of urgency. I wanted that. I usually have huge shows, but I wanted to go back to be on stage and show that I can cause that energy with nothing. Only with a nice red suit.
