Pronti a conoscere il mondo di Mika?

 

Nel numero di Focus Junior in edicola dal 21 settembre conosceremo l'universo dietro il celebre cantante di origine libanese.

Nel frattempo, ecco qualche curiosità...

 

Si preannunciano mesi pieni per Mika, stella luminosa della scena pop mondiale ed ex-giudice del talent X-Factor Italia. Il 10 novembre partirà da Londra infatti il suo Revelation Tour, la tournée che porterà il cantante in giro per l'Europa e farà tappa in ben 12 città italiane, un vero record per un evento di questa portata.

Nel corso di questa lunga serie di concerti, Mika canterà i brani del nuovo album (My Name is Michael Holbrook, in uscita il 4 ottobre) e i grandi successi amati dai fan di vecchia data.

• È dislessico e sebbene ciò gli abbia creato qualche problema durante infanzia e adolescente, la sua diversa "prospettiva" non gli ha impedito di riscuotere un successo internazionale.

Simpatico e solare, così ci è apparso Mika quando lo abbiamo incontrato in una calda giornata di luglio in un appartamento (forse il suo?) nel centro di Milano. L’artista Michael Holbrook Penniman Jr. (questo è il suo vero nome) è nato a Beirut, in Libano, il 18 agosto 1983 ma ha vissuto in varie parti del mondo. Nel 1984, all’età di un anno, a causa della guerra civile in Libano (1975-1990) assieme alla famiglia si è trasferito a Parigi e a nove anni a Londra. Qui, però, Mika ha iniziato ad avere qualche “problemino”.

Ecco che cosa ci ha raccontato.

 

Com’è stata la tua infanzia?

«Ascoltare diversi generi di musica, da quella classica al jazz, fino a quella contemporanea, è come osservare un quadro con una bella prospettiva. Avrete diversi livelli di profondità»

«Molto bella ma complicata. Dovete sapere che all’età di nove anni ho avuto molte difficoltà con la scuola, mi sentivo a disagio. Ero considerato uno stupido sia dagli insegnanti sia dai compagni perché non riuscivo a leggere e a scrivere, a causa della dislessia. Così

ho lasciato la scuola, però in quel periodo ho studiato musica con un insegnante privato. In breve tempo sono riuscito a trovare fiducia in me stesso, perché con la musica riuscivo a esprimermi e poi anche perché sono stato chiamato a tenere il mio primo “concerto” alla Royal Opera House di Londra! Non ho frequentato le scuole tradizionali ma una scuola d’arte molto importante: non tutti devono per forza essere ingegneri, dottori o avvocati».

 

Come ti sei avvicinato al pianoforte?

«Ho studiato musica e ogni volta che avevo lezione con l’insegnante ero terrorizzato perché non riuscivo a leggere le note. Ma non mi sono scoraggiato: in gran segreto, da solo, ho scoperto il piacere di inventare e comporre. Non sono un grande pianista ma non importa, ho trovato la mia maniera di fare musica».

 

Qual è il lato più bello e quello più brutto del tuo lavoro?

«Il bello è che creo qualcosa. La creatività dà valore alla mia vita. Il brutto è che ciò che ho creato avrà delle critiche. Io le ascolto, ma seguo il mio istinto».

«Con Stasera casa Mika vi ho invitati a fare festa a casa mia, ora verrò a casa vostra. Busserò alla vostra porta, città per città. Spero mi accoglierete» dice Mika. Infatti il 10 novembre partirà da Londra il Revelation tour, che proseguirà in Spagna, Francia, Italia, Svizzera, Olanda, Belgio e Lussemburgo. In Italia si esibirà in 12 città, da nord a sud, e canterà anche le canzoni del nuovo album My Name is Michael Holbrook, in uscita il 4 ottobre.

«Very beautiful but complicated. You should know that at the age of nine I had many difficulties with school, I felt uncomfortable. I was considered a fool by both teachers and classmates because I could not read or write because of dyslexia. So

I left school, but at that time I studied music with a private teacher. In a short time I was able to find confidence in myself, because with music I could express myself and then also because I was called to hold my first "concert" at the Royal Opera House in London! I did not attend traditional schools but a very important art school: not everyone has to be an engineer, doctor or lawyer ".

 

How did you approach the piano?

"I studied music and every time I had a lesson with the teacher I was terrified because I couldn't read the notes. But I was not discouraged: in great secrecy, alone, I discovered the pleasure of inventing and composing. I'm not a great pianist but it doesn't matter, I found my way of making music ».

 

What is the most beautiful and the ugliest side of your job?

"The beauty is that I create something. Creativity gives value to my life. The bad news is that what I created will be criticized. I listen to them, but I follow my instincts ».

Intervista a Mika: viaggio nel mondo di un eterno sognatore!

 

 

I nostri giornalisti, accompagnati da alcuni Junior Reporter, hanno intervistato Mika, la popstar internazionale che ama gli spaghetti al pomodoro, adora Jeff Buckley.. E non ha un grande rapporto con gli elefanti...Ecco cosa ci ha raccontato!

 

Lui si chiama Michael Holbrook Penniman Jr. ma tutti lo conosciamo come Mika, il bravissimo - e simpaticissimo - cantante pop che è stato anche giudice di XFactor Italia. Insieme ad alcuni Junior Reporter siamo andati ad intervistarlo e ci ha concesso una chiaccherata davvero stimolante.

Prima però conosciamolo meglio...

 

IDENTIKIT

Nato a Beirut, in Libano, il 18 agosto 1983, questo artista poliedrico ha vissuto in varie parti del mondo e la sua vita ha attraversato alcuni momenti complicato. Nel 1984, all’età di un anno, Mika ha dovuto lasciare il suo Paese a causa della guerra civile (1975-1990) e assieme alla famiglia si è trasferito prima a Parigi e poi, quando aveva nove anni a Londra. Qui, però, Mika ha iniziato ad avere qualche “problemino”, soprattutto a causa della dislessia che gli impediva di andare bene a scuola...

Nel tempo però Mika ha trasformato questo differente modo di vedere le cose in una qualità ed è diventata la star internazionale che tutti conosciamo. Ecco cosa ci ha raccontato...

 

L'INTERVISTA

 

Ciao Mika, cominciamo dalle basi: che genere di musica ascolti?

Ascolto diversi tipi di musica. Quella classica è molto importante per me perché mi offre prospettiva diversa. Se tu ascolti solo un tipo di musica è come se vedessi un quadro che possiede una certa profondità: se ascolti il Jazz è più profondo, se senti musica classica - tipo Verdi - ancora più profondo…Bach, Chopin, The Giornalisti…C’è un legame tra tutti questi tipi di musica. In questo momento sono nella fase di Charlie Parker, un musicista jazz. Ascoltatelo perché è molto, molto bello.

 

Com’è stata la tua esperienza lirica alla Royal Philharmonic Orchestra?

Due cose di quel periodo mi hanno veramente cambiato la vita.
La prima volta è stata la possibilità di entrare in un teatro: la scuola non andava bene, mi trovavo male ero considerato uno stupido, tutto era difficile... Invece a teatro avevo una responsabilità e mi pagavano per fare questo. La seconda è stata il rendersi conto che esistono diversi modi per vivere la tua vita, non tutti devono essere ingegneri, dottori, avvocati, che si può anche fare un altro tipo di lavoro. Mio padre lavorava e lavora in un ufficio, nella finanza, io non capivo nulla di numeri e ho potuto vedere che c’era un altra strada da percorrere.

 

Chi è il cantante preferito di Mika?

In questo momento il mio cantante preferito è Jeff Buckley - se non lo conoscete ascoltatelo perché è molto bravo - lui ha fatto solo un album, Grace, che è molto bello.

 

Come ti sei avvicinato al tuo strumento?

Io prendevo delle lezioni di piano e dovevo leggere la musica, ma era molto difficile e spesso pregavo che la professoressa di piano non venisse! Mi terrorizzava, era una sfida impossibile guardare le note e capire cosa farne. Così, fuori dalle lezioni, ho iniziato a suonare istintivamente (si porta la mano all’orecchio, N.D.R), senza pensare, senza leggere la musica e lì ho scoperto il piacere della melodia e di inventare cose nuove da da solo. Quando ho iniziato a scrivere canzoni si è creato un rapporto molto forte tra me e il pianoforte, un rapporto del tutto istintivo - non sono un grande pianista, non posso leggere la musica - ma non importa perché ho trovato la mia maniera di fare la musica.

 

Dove trovi l’ispirazione per le tue canzoni?

Soprattutto nella vita delle persone intorno a me. La vita dei miei fratelli, dei miei genitori, dei miei amici, nei viaggi. Penso che che cantare una storia vera sia importante perché in quel momento canti qualcosa che vive, il che è più interessante di un testo inventato. Anche se inventare è più facile...

 

Com’è stata la tua esperienza a XFactor?

XFactor è stato molto divertente. Sono riuscito a godermelo perché ne ho fatti solo tre: XFactor è uno show dove la tua reazione di fronte ai giovani cantanti deve rimanere fresca e se lo fai troppo a lungo diventa come un ruolo. È importane in questi show mantenere sempre una spontaneità perché l’ingrediente principale è la verità. 

 

Qual è la cosa più bella e la cosa più brutta del tuo lavoro?

La cosa più bella è lavorare per sé stessi. Anche quando sono stanco, so che tutto quello che sto facendo lo sto facendo per il mio lavoro, per la cosa che ho creato io, e questa è un'idea molto potente perché la creatività è l’unica cosa che da un senso di valore nella tua vita.
La cosa brutta è che su queste cose che tu hai creato ci saranno tantissime opinioni, e l’opinione è la cosa più difficile da gestire, perché tutti ne hanno una diversa.

 

Qual è stato il posto più bello che hai visitato?

Recentemente ho fatto un viaggio in Thailandia, dove c’è un posto speciale che si chiama il Triangolo d’Oro. Lì ho dormito in una tenda su una collina che segna la frontiera Thailandia e Myanmar, quindi mi addormentavo in Thailandia e avevo di fronte il Myanmar e sulla destra le colline di Laos. Ogni notte faticavo a prendere sonno perché ogni 2 ore si avvertiva il rumore di tutti gli elefanti che venivano a buttarsi nell’acqua proprio di fronte alla tenda. Facevano un baccano terrificante e puzzano tantissimo di cacca e di pipì. Ho anche provato a salire in groppa ad uno di loro - hanno scoperto una pelle grezza e dura peggio di quella di mia nonna! - ma mi ha buttato in acqua ed è andato via. Insomma in posto era molto bello ma gli elefanti erano antipatici.

 

Qual è il genere di pubblico che ti piace di più quando fai i concerti?

È il pubblico che vuole ascoltare veramente. Però in verità quello che mi dà ancora più soddisfazione è il pubblico che non ti conosce bene, perché devi convincerlo, portarlo dentro il tuo mondo e sorprenderlo. 

 

È stato determinante per la tua carriera lasciare la scuola per un periodo di tempo?

Sì e no. Ho cominciato a fare musica grazie al fatto di dover trovare altro oltre alla scuola però oggi sono un professionista oggi perché ho dovuto frequentato 15 ai 18/19 anni una scuola d'arte dove avevano un livello di insegnamento molto molto alto. Dobbiamo difendere l’insegnamento dell’arte e della musica perché sta scomparendo dalle scuole, anche in America.

 

A che età ti è venuta la passione per la musica?

Ero molto giovane, c’era un violinista che suonava in un ristorante e io che avevo 2 anni andavo con la mano per cercare di toccare la musica che usciva dal violino. il violinista (zingaro) ha riso e ha detto: questo qua sarà un musicista.

 

Qual è il luogo dove ti piace di più cantare?

La doccia (ride, N.D.R)

 

Hai mai pensato di smettere con il tuo lavoro per le troppe critiche?

No, mai, l’unica cosa che farei è cambiare lavoro per diventare un cavaliere a livello olimpico, salto degli ostacoli. Ma non sarà mai possibile…

 

Quando hai iniziato a voler essere famoso?

Mai perché essere famoso è terribile.

 

Hai continuato la tua passione per il teatro?

Sì, se venite a vedere i miei show entrate in un altro mondo: la parte teatrale è rimasta, fa parte del mio linguaggio artistico.

 

Un ricordo di quando eri piccolo, della scuola elementare?

Una volta avevo deciso che nella mia classe c’era bisogno di un albero di Natale perché era triste. Allora la mattina ho preso dei soldi dalla borsa di mia madre e ho comprato un albero che poi ho trascinato fino classe. Ovviamente è arrivato tutto rovinato e spoglio perché avevo perso i pezzi per strada,. Io pensavo che tutti sarebbero stati contenti e avrebbero applaudito, invece mi hanno messo in castigo per tre giorni e ho anche dovuto pulire i corridoi che avevo sporcato trascinando l’albero.

 

Qualche insegnante ha lasciato un ricordo?

Ci sono stati molti insegnanti che mi hanno aiutato, che mi hanno fatto capire come per imparare non esista solo un metodo, ma tanti. Ogni persona ha una sua maniera di apprendere la medesima cosa. Un professore, ad esempio, per farci imparare la letteratura francese ci faceva mettere in scena delle opere.

 

Leggi molto? Che libri consiglieresti?

Leggo tantissimo e consiglio Charles Dickens, che è un po' ostico ma per un giovane è molto importante leggerlo e il Tao di Pooh:  Winnie the Pooh è un personaggio basato su dei principi filosofici molto antichi e importanti!

 

Cibo preferito?

Spaghetti al pomodoro e parmigiano.

Non ne ho uno.

 

Cosa mangi a colazione?

Latte e caffè

 

Città preferita?

Montreal, che racchiude tutto ciò che mi piace dell’America e dell’Europa.

THE INTERVIEW

 

Hi Mika, let's start with the basics: what kind of music do you listen to?

I listen to different types of music. That classic is very important to me because it gives me a different perspective. If you listen to only one type of music, it's like seeing a painting that has a certain depth: if you listen to Jazz it's deeper, if you hear classical music - like Verdi - even deeper ... Bach, Chopin, The Journalists ... There's a link between all these types of music. Right now I'm in the phase of Charlie Parker, a jazz musician. Listen to him because he is very, very beautiful.

 

How was your opera experience at the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra?

Two things from that time really changed my life.
The first time was the possibility of entering a theater: the school was not going well, I felt bad I was considered a fool, everything was difficult ... Instead at the theater I had a responsibility and they paid me to do this. The second was to realize that there are different ways to live your life, not everyone has to be an engineer, a doctor, a lawyer, that you can also do another type of work. My father worked and works in an office, in finance, I didn't understand anything about numbers and I could see that there was another way to go.

 

Who is Mika's favorite singer?

Right now my favorite singer is Jeff Buckley - if you don't know him, listen to him because he's very good - he just did an album, Grace, which is very cool.

 

How did you approach your instrument?

I took piano lessons and had to read music, but it was very difficult and I often prayed that the piano teacher wouldn't come! It terrified me, it was a challenge impossible to look at the notes and understand what to do with them. So, out of class, I started playing instinctively (he puts his hand to his ear, N.D.R), without thinking, without reading the music, and there I discovered the pleasure of melody and inventing new things on my own. When I started writing songs, a very strong relationship was created between me and the piano, a completely instinctive relationship - I'm not a great pianist, I can't read music - but it doesn't matter because I found my way of making music .

 

Where do you find inspiration for your songs?

Especially in the lives of the people around me. The life of my brothers, my parents, my friends, traveling. I think that singing a real story is important because at that moment you sing something that lives, which is more interesting than an invented text. Even if inventing is easier ...

 

How was your experience at XFactor?

XFactor was a lot of fun. I was able to enjoy it because I only made three: XFactor is a show where your reaction to young singers must remain fresh and if you do it too long it becomes a role. It is important in these shows to always maintain a spontaneity because the main ingredient is the truth.

 

What is the best thing and the worst thing about your job?

The best thing is to work for yourself. Even when I'm tired, I know that all I'm doing is doing it for my job, for the thing I created, and this is a very powerful idea because creativity is the only thing that gives a sense of value in your life.
The bad thing is that on these things that you have created there will be lots of opinions, and opinion is the most difficult thing to manage, because everyone has a different one.

 

What was the most beautiful place you visited?

 

I recently made a trip to Thailand, where there is a special place called the Golden Triangle. There I slept in a tent on a hill that marks the border between Thailand and Myanmar, so I fell asleep in Thailand and faced Myanmar and on the right the hills of Laos. Every night I struggled to sleep because every two hours we could hear the noise of all the elephants that came to jump into the water right in front of the tent. They made a terrific noise and they stink so much of poop and pee. I also tried to get on one of them - they discovered a raw skin and lasts worse than my grandmother's! - but he threw me in the water and left. In short, the place was very nice but the elephants were obnoxious.

 

What is the kind of audience that you like best when you play concerts?

It is the public that really wants to listen. But in truth, what gives me even more satisfaction is the public that doesn't know you well, because you have to convince it, take it into your world and surprise it.

 

Was it crucial for your career to leave school for a period of time?

Yes and no. I started making music thanks to having to find something other than the school but today I am a professional today because I had to attend an art school 15 to 18/19 years where they had a very high level of teaching. We must defend the teaching of art and music because it is disappearing from schools, even in America.

 

At what age did your passion for music come from?

I was very young, there was a violinist who played in a restaurant and I who was 2 years old went with my hand to try to touch the music coming out of the violin. the violinist (gypsy) laughed and said: this will be a musician here.

 

What is the place where you like to sing the most?

The shower (laughs, editor's note)

 

Have you ever thought about quitting your job for too many criticisms?

No, never, the only thing I would do is change jobs to become a knight at the Olympic level, jump over obstacles. But it will never be possible ...

 

When did you start wanting to be famous?

Never because being famous is terrible.

 

Have you continued your passion for theater?

Yes, if you come to see my shows, you enter another world: the theater part has remained, it is part of my artistic language.

 

A memory of when you were little, of elementary school?

Once I had decided that a Christmas tree was needed in my class because it was sad. So in the morning I took some money from my mother's bag and bought a tree which I then dragged up class. Obviously everything came ruined and bare because I had lost the pieces on the street. I thought everyone would be happy and would applaud, instead they punished me for three days and I also had to clean the corridors I had dirtied by dragging the tree.

 

Have any teachers left a memory?

There were many teachers who helped me, who made me understand how to learn there is not only one method, but many. Each person has his own way of learning the same thing. A professor, for example, to make us learn French literature made us stage works.

 

Do you read a lot? What books would you recommend?

I read a lot and recommend Charles Dickens, which is a bit tricky but for a young person it is very important to read it and the Tao of Pooh: Winnie the Pooh is a character based on very ancient and important philosophical principles!

 

Favorite food?

Spaghetti with tomato sauce and Parmesan cheese.

 

Who's favorite?

I do not have one.

 

What do you eat for breakfast?
