Mika makes emotional return to UK with showstopping performance

The love in London was certainly not tiny for Mika, as he made an emotional return to the UK after seven years.

Following the release of his album, My Name Is Michael Holbrook, the star made an epic comeback as he launched into his single Ice Cream.

And as the lights dimmed down after the first track of the evening, his dedicated fanbase surprised the Lollipop singer by raising homemade signs, all of which read: ‘We missed you.’

Evidently, the kind gesture caught Mika off guard, who took a moment to admire the view as he placed his hand over his heart before blasting out his new track Dear Jealousy.

The 36-year-old introduced a colour theme early on in the evening as he stated: ‘Yellow is love.’

After his second track, he joked that green means envy, ‘or for the purpose of this concert, jealousy,’ as he explained how pink is both sin and desire.

His last colour was blue, which he laughed about having a bad reputation and is often misunderstood.

The theme didn’t go unnoticed by fans, who brought along multicoloured paper hearts and lit up Shepherd’s Bush Empire, in London, with their phone lights during the track Tiny Love.

But while he sang a collection of new songs, he also treated his audience to a number of hits from his back catalogue.

Giving a shout out to his mum, who was proudly sat on the balcony, the musician took to the piano for a stripped-back version of Lollipop where he’d added in a new verse about how love didn’t get him down.

Throwing in another classic he continued into Wicked inspired hit, Popular Song – which he collaborated on with Ariana Grande back in 2013.

Getting up close and personal with fans, Mika climbed over the barriers and walked among them while singing Big Girl – stealing the hat off one punter’s head as he went.

But don’t worry, after dancing around with his new accessory, the star then threw the hat into the crowd, making sure it found its way back to its owner.

Closing off the night, Mika brought all the colours together with his infamous hit Grace Kelly and finished his encore with a reprise of Tiny Love, which slowly blended into Stay High.

It was a showstopping performance that was met with nothing but love, and well worth the almost decade-long wait.

International pop icon Mika returns to Shepherd’s Bush, greeted by a sold-out show. It’s been four years of waiting for his devoted fans, with the latest album My Name is Michael Holbrook only released in October this year. It’s a record in keeping with the artist’s classically exultant melodies and catchy hooks, the very same ones that propelled his earlier material into the spotlight.

 

From the opener Ice Cream, the singer exudes raw energy. With their arms raised towards the stage, the crowd sing along to every word. Dear Jealousy reveals the reason for such a long break from music, backlit against green lights and highlighting the theme of this show – colours. “Pink is the colour of desire”, he announces, following with the opening cues of Origin of Love.

 

Unafraid to play with his own ten-year discography, Mika dips in and out of his albums. Big Girls (You Are Beautiful) is undoubtedly a crowd favourite, as are any hits from the 2007 album Life in Cartoon Motion. These are the songs that his audience have grown up with over the last 12 years, introduced to parents and children, who all dance along next to each other in a flurry of tissue paper hats and phone torches.

 

With Tiny Love and Sanremo from the new album, the artist shows himself to be still vastly underappreciated, for the ferocity with which he delivers power-pop anthems is unmatched. These numbers are evidence that this icon is still at the top of his game. Nothing could be truer than this when the opening bars of Happy Ending begin, a heartbreak anthem that is revealed in a new light when the track fades into acapella and the crowd goes silent.

 

At an early point in the show, everyone in the stalls raises a sign that reads “We’ve missed you Mika”, reflecting a sentiment that is felt across the balconies. Sooo long night 😂

 

Missed the last tube up north so ended in a random Uber with a rather crazy driver 😂

Me and my boyfriend got there about 11:30am and join the normal queue as we didn’t know if we’d have a priority line. No one offered to “hand in a number” or what so ever to us. About an hour later security came in to organize people around and separate standing/ balcony/ priority. As I knew I am with O2 I joined the priority. Most of the ladies there did not have the right of being in priority as they didn’t meet criteria, but at no point you saw me complaining or reporting people. Even the girl who was nr1 understood. We froze, we drink way too much tea and we waited... and what a wait. Door open, we ran like cray cray and got to the front row, was about the third person getting there. This girl on my side was taking the space of 2 to save space for her friends. When the whole group got there they all sat on the floor taking space for everyone else. They asked if I could move from my rather good space for her friends and of course I said no 🙄 at this point everyone starts getting pissy as they are requested to get up to make space for everyone, they started insulting me and more people around me that were alone because we used the priority queue, they started pushing me to kick me out of the front row. I was just questioning myself why would you do such thing when you don’t know who’s around you, I do understand several languages and I can assure you the things those ladies where saying is not appropriated what so ever. Also it’s not very polite to go on Twitter bitchy about other people with lies and understatements. Please everyone grow a bit and act your age, we are all there to see the man we love and adore, not to ruin others good time. I am pretty sure in your country you also know ways of getting early into a venue and I am not moaning/ being rude to you. Sorry (not sorry) about my rant but I can’t stand people like this and I could not allow them to ruin my night, I have to vent it out)

 

Show started and OMG I missed him so badly! Been 6 years since the show in Lisbon! His voice was amazing and the set list was amazing, I did want to listen to Paloma live and who knows about a Tiny love with Paloma and Mika singing. The strange was a blank canvas (or black in this situation) which I am not used to. Kinda missed the 2010 tour with that amazing stage and that theatre type. But Mika grew, Mika is a full grown man and I have to understand that and legit suck it up 😂 that happy ending brought me to tears, besides being my fav song that acapela bit broke me completely. His reaction to the hearts and “We’ve missed you” was amazing. Mika I love you but I want my heart that you stole from me back 😘. Also was amazing him coming into the crowd during Big girls ❤️ Bringing back the gold but gold songs was a good move. Baring in mind I never been in this venue before idk if it’s normal or not, but the fact that the security was handing in water was amazing and greatly appreciated. Also I hope the girl next to me that wasn’t feeling great is better now! 

It felt a bit too little for me, but again, it’s been 6 years so even if he was singing the whole night it would still feel the same 😂 

 

overall an amazing show beside the bumps along the way with the humans. Now back to my cage and I will be back to MFC in a couple of years 😂

I was at 02 Empire Shepherd's Bush last night, great performance!

Unfortunately my phone battery was low and my switched off. I missed Mika's entrance on stage singing Ice Cream of course and doing a lovely and generous speech to his beloved audience. It’s been over three long years since I last saw Mika (at the London Palladium) and the wait was all compensated for by the man last night. A simple, music show, no gimmics, just Mika and his incredible band.

He sang all I thought he would and more, I think for the first time I didn’t feel like there were some songs missing from my dream set list🤩

Me and my friend who has travelled all the way from Egypt to see Mika, were around row 4-5 centre stage. By the end of Relax I thought I had no more energy for dancing and singing😅 and then a true miracle happened... Mika came down during Big Girl with no security and completely unexpected and sang less than a metre away from us😍🤩❤️ At this point I would like to thank all the fans that were in his proximity, you guys showed as much respect for Mika as he showed us his trust - not a single hand touched him, we just sang and danced with him completely awed. Of all the over 20 gigs I’ve been to, this moment will always stand out. 
A perfect crowd, an unbelievable energy and mutual joy! Mika was completely speechless seeing our “We’ve missed you” cards at the end of Ice-Cream and then the colourful lit up hearts that we rose up in Tiny Love. 
A beautiful brand new set list, an unforgettable night. It was amazing to see so many familiar faces (some from a distance) as well as new fans. Till the next time, guys. It was epic🤩❤️

It's been four years since Mika last toured his music live. Last night (10 November), his fans were waiting. Armed with touching "we've missed you signs", the devoted were treated to a storming comeback peppered with hits old and new.

With a decade-long discography and a dandy-ish stage presence that hasn't disappeared in his absence, Michael Holbrook is back. Here are all the photos of his show at O2 Shepherds Bush Empire to commemorate the occasion.

Well, what a fantastic night that was!!!

Mika was in such a good mood, and great form. From the moment he stepped on that stage you could just feel the audience's enthusiasm and how he was feeding off that, so the chemistry was great. We had balcony tickets for level 1 and got there late because we really didn't want to put ourselves through the torture of crazy queuing up all day 😅 and even though we only waited outside for a bit if was freezing! Clearly the people who had queued all day are made of far sturdier stuff than I am, since I'm certain that I would have ended up with frostbite or something if I'd tried that 🤣

 

Anyway, we managed a great seat on the second row of the balcony, which I was chuffed with. We had a really great view and as this is a small venue, it felt very much like we were totally 'there' with Mika and everyone else. What can I say that hasn't been said yet about his set, it was excellent. I absolutely ADORED Platform Ballerinas live, as it's just fantastic: full of life, rhythm, catchy...I loved it!!! I also really enjoyed San Remo and missed Paloma, as I would have loved to hear that one. The rest of new songs that he did I saw in Montreal in September but I loved hearing them live again. Dear Jealousy is one of my favourites of the new album and so is Tiny Love. It was very special to see the Tiny Love performance with the lady and I just adore the feeling that he clearly puts into it when he sings this song. 

 

At the end we ran off in order to make trains, etc as we figured that the chance of seeing Mika outside would be minimal, since the London gigs always seem to end up with crazy amounts of people mobbing him which was a shame because I would have loved to say hi and thanks for the show, but what can you do, eh. I would have also liked to see some people who I knew were going to be there and I haven't seen in a while, but since they were standing and we didn't cross paths it didn't happen this time ☺️  In any case we went back home on a big high from an amazing evening and from seeing Mika himself so happy with the atmosphere and how the crowd reacted to him.

 

Please come back soon Mika, we miss your shows big time 😍

Thanks for the report - I think I missed a really great night. You are right about not bothering to try to see Mika after London gigs, but it is a pity long-standing UK fans miss out on this.

 

And I am beginning to think balcony seats are better for shows anyway, as you get such a good view of everything,  It will be interesting to see where next year's UK gig is staged.  Maybe see you there?

I've only just arrived home and I'm exhausted after my busy weekend, but I have enough energy to write a little report about my amazing experience at this show!

 

This was my second Mika gig, and I was very excited to see him again.  It had been a long three years since I'd seen him at the Palladium, so I was really grateful that I could attend this show.  I travelled to London with my friend on Friday and went sightseeing on Saturday, but obviously Mika was the highlight of my weekend!

 

We started to queue at 5pm.  Met some really lovely fans in the queue and had a great time chatting with them.  Eventually the doors opened and we sprinted inside.  Managed to find a spot that was fairly close to the stage, but not directly at the front.  Unfortunately I didn't have the greatest view as I'm quite short, but it wasn't too bad.  I wasn't particularly keen on the support act - they were a DJ duo, but they didn't interact with the crowd much.  Not that I cared too much, because I was just so excited to see Mika!

 

The main concert started around 9pm, and Mika opened with an explosive performance of Ice Cream.  The whole concert was amazing, but my highlights were We Are Golden, Popular Song, Love Today, and Platform Ballerinas.  We held up paper hearts during Tiny Love, and the smile on his face was adorable.  He has such a genuine love for his fans. 

 

I went to the stage door after the concert in the hope of meeting Mika.  Got speaking to some more lovely fans, which was fun.  While we were waiting for Mika to come out, I saw his sister Paloma leaving.  I waved at her, and she looked at me and smiled!  Mika eventually came out and stayed for about ten minutes signing autographs and taking photos with fans.  I was really close to him, so close that I think we even made eye contact at one point, but I didn't get to meet him.  So near yet so far.  However, I do understand that he couldn't stay for long, and I felt incredibly lucky to be so close to him!

 

Overall, I had an amazing night and a great weekend overall.  I didn't get to meet other fans at my first Mika gig in 2016, so it was really lovely to meet some of you this time!  Trouble is, I think I'm already starting to suffer from post-gig depression.  I really hope he will come back to London soon...
