:france:

:uk:

"Star Académie": Mika takes control!

We were promised flamboyant and spectacular, and we were not disappointed. Mika transported us to his colorful universe at “Star Académie” on Sunday. Drawings, fanfare, pyrotechnics, projections: it was only outside that the weather was gray!

Mika, the academy's illustrious artistic director, has been waiting for seven weeks. COVID obviously complicated the arrival of the one-off collaborator, but the international artist has been true to his commitment.

He spent a lot of time at the academy last week, hammering his young colleagues to "do their homework," and he'll be here to make us dream again next Sunday, with another oversized mural.

The "Mika-esque" atmosphere was already feverish in the MELS studio, long before the start of the gala. The usual place to hang out, the local cafeteria had been wrapped in a huge white canvas, furnished with projectors and blocked off by a fence, temporarily declared a "pyrotechnic zone".

We were made to wait a few minutes before the fiesta, the time for an energetic medley with Marc Dupré, concluded with his new play “Where will the world be”, undoubtedly doomed to success, and performances by candidates in danger, Dashny , Queenie and Rosalie.

The king of the evening then had the field, with the 23 musicians and the flashy and original costumes that had been reserved for him.

Fireworks

We didn't take out the big guns immediately, offering a stripped-down segment opening in the main studio like the title of the song that carried it ("Relax, Take It Easy"). Mika and Lunou were seated, each on his piano, in front of a decoration evoking a starry sky. We had brandished tuxedos and bow ties, for a departure that was both soft and solemn.

In the hallway leading to the garage, on a long red carpet, Mika and Dashny then strolled, dancing, to "Lollipop", escorted by members of a marching band. Drums and trumpets quickly moved to the stage, where soft pink illustrations were enthroned.

For the dapper "She tells me", figures with heads of geometric shapes jerked their dance steps at the feet of William, Shayan and Mika, who seemed to be having a blast with his two buddies. The painting was very comic, very typical of Mika.

On the sexy "Boom Boom Boom," Maëva and Annabelle sensually moved up the stairs, as Jacob set the pace for a nearby maraca.

The explosion - literally and figuratively - happened on "Stay High", in the vast white space specially designed at Mika's request. He and his friends William, Dashny, Shayan and Lunou wriggled between the ray-lit lighting and the elaborately crafted fireworks of the PurFX box, a sort of parallel world where Mika and her immaculate costume radiated. At MELS, the backfiring could be heard and the smoke could be seen and felt several meters away!

For dessert, we had taken out the violins to carry the always majestic "Happy Ending", watered by a shower of rose petals, the return of the band and other joyful flourishes.

"I haven't sweated like this for a very long time!" Mika confessed at the end of the routine. His wet face proved him right!

And a part when they are watching "Hallelujah".

Lara Fabien explains the meaning of the song, which is not at all a "church" song :wink2:

There are several versions. But in general it's an ode to the orgasme as she sais :lol3:

No, I will not go to the Naughty Corner!

 I know it wasn't a church song, but I didn't know that.

For me it's the same with "Ice Cream". Hearing children singing "I want your ice cream I want it melting on my tongue" makes me feel a little uncomfortable :glasses3:

Yeah, and the bad thing is that it's one of my son's faves. :aah: Of course I told him when he asked that it's about actual ice cream, and as he loves ice cream, of course he loves that Mika is singing about it. Luckily he only knows a few words in English, and he doesn't even understand that it's "your" ice cream, he always sings "I want to ice cream" :lmfao: ... he'll probably hate me when he finds out one day.  It's just good that Mika isn't popular in Germany, that way no one knows the song in case my kids happen to sing it somewhere. :teehee: And well, also my son likes to invent his own lyrics to songs, so he often sings different things on the melody of Ice Cream, maybe I should work with him on an innocent version in German that he can sing. :teehee:

He used to sing in advertisements as a kid. He talked about it several times. During the day - learning and singing opera songs and in his free time doing things like singing in ads :lol3:  For Orbit Chewing Gum or British Airways :lol3:

Is it on Monday night ? I'm always confused about TIME-ZONE ! :hypo:

Hey Eriko, and anyone else confused about time zones -- I always use this site to figure out what time it is, maybe it can help you.

Also, I remembered that I read an interesting piece in Rolling Stone a few years ago about the meaning behind Cohen's Hallelujah and how it came to be. The song's not simply about sex, or about religion, and it has an interesting backstory. I googled and finally found it, if you should want to read it:

For sure we can interpret the meaning of the song in so many different way.

That's why Mika said that Leonard Cohen is a point of reference for all song/poetry writers.

It reminds me our long discussion about "Tiny Love: video meanings :lol3:

I also found this article yesterday, very interesting!  And another one explaining more the sexual meaning that Lara Fabian was talking about:

Mika is preparing a surprise for Jacob.

He asks if Jacob know the song "Heros". Then when the boy goes to find a paper to take notes Mika explains to others (in secret)

that he will create a huge organ ( the instrument) on the stage and Jacob will play on it.

The others plus a a 12 person gospel choir will surround him and sing together. All dressed in black caps with hoods on their heads.

So there will be at least one Mika song!!!!! Or it'a about David Bowie's "Heroes"?

I love his smile !

The way he asks in the beginning "Who knows Heroes?", I'd think he talks about Bowie's song. Also the picture of Jacob, if that's his performance for the song, that doesn't fit to Mika's Heroes. Anyway, we'll see... Mika likes to surprise everyone, lol! :teehee:

Deb and me speculating it will be Heroes by Mika, but you’re right, it might as well be the Bowie song. Also, I don’t think Mika expects the candidates to know “his” Heroes songs, since the Bowie song kind of is a classic. But like you said: who knows! He likes to surprise!

Going to throw it out there: what if he makes a medley of both!?
