My brother Fortuné and I yesterday evening. I Love Beirut was a concert in aid of Lebanon and a declaration of my love for this city and this country that I left at the age of one and a half. "I Love Lebanon" is what I want to say after receiving today the Lebanese National Order of Merit - Silver Palm.

Today I think of my Lebanese grandmother, my mother, my aunts, my family, who brought the Lebanese soul to my life at home, in Paris, in London, everywhere I lived.

Citizen of this uprooted world, Lebanon flows through my veins. This reciprocal love, so unexpected and so poignant, makes me happy and very proud of my heritage, especially in these difficult times for Lebanon. Thank you from me and all my family. I Love Beirut, c'était un concert après le traumatisme de la catastrophe du port. I Love Beirut, c'est ma déclaration d'amour à cette ville et ce pays qui j'ai quitté à l'âge d'un an et demi.

I Love Beirut c'est ce que j'ai envie de dire après avoir recu la médaille de L’ordre National Du Mérite à la Palme Argentée.

Aujourd'hui je pense à ma grand-mère, à ma mère, à mes tantes, à ma famille qui de Paris à Londres faisaient vivre l'âme libanaise à la maison.

Citoyen du monde déraciné, le Liban coule dans mes veines. Cet héritage m'oblige chaque jour. Cet amour réciproque me rend heureux et fier.

C’est par ces mots que l’artiste Mika a réagi lundi soir sur ses comptes Facebook, Instagram et Twitter à l’issue de sa décoration par le président de la République libanaise Michel Aoun des insignes de l’Ordre du Mérite au grade argenté. Elles lui ont été remises par l’ambassadeur du Liban à Paris, Rami Adwan, dans « un cadre restreint et familial », précise un communiqué de l’ambassade du Liban à Paris.

تنويهاً باندفاع الفنان العالمي اللبناني الأصل مايكل هولبروك بينيمان الشهير باسم Mika الذي جنّد طاقاته لمساعدة لبنان بعد انفجار مرفأ بيروت، وتقديراً لمساهمته في رفع صورة لبنان، منحه الرئيس اللبناني ميشال عون وسام الاستحقاق الوطني من الدرجة الفضية، وقلَّده الوسام السفير اللبناني في فرنسا رامي عدوان في حفلٍ رسمي اتسم بأجواء عائلية.

ولفت السفير اللبناني إلى أن “الوسام قد مُنح لفنانٍ نجح في جمع الموسيقى والشعر والألوان في آنٍ واحد، كعربون تقديرٍ من شعبٍ بأكمله لشخص الفنان المتمسك بجذوره اللبنانية، والمتميّز بإنسانيته، وهو الذي لم يتوانَ يومًا عن تقديم المساعدة للأطفال من ذوي الاحتياجات الخاصة”.

وثمّن في كلمته “اندفاع الفنان الذي جنَّد طاقاته بعد فاجعة الرابع من آب/أغسطس 2020، متحدياً القيود الصحية والاجتماعية المفروضة، لتنظيم حفل موسيقي افتراضي دعمًا للبنان ولعاصمته وشعبه”.

من جهته، عبّر Mika عن “عميق تأثره بهذا التكريم الوطني الذي يشرّفه كما ويشرف والديه اللذين حرصا على أن يكون للبنان موقعٌ خاصٌ في قلب ووجدان أولادهم الخمسة”.

وكان ميكا نظّم حفلاً فنياً تحت عنوان “I love Beirut أحب بيروت” في “تياترو نيكوليني”، واستمر ساعة و40 دقيقة، وشاركته فيه الممثلة سلمى حايك اللبنانية الأصل ومشاهير من العالم، وجمع الحفل تبرّعات لمساعدة المتضرّرين من الانفجار.

Mika receives Lebanon’s National Order of Merit for Beirut tribute concert

Held last September, the event raised funds for the recovery effort after the Beirut Port explosion

 

Mika's concert for Beirut has been honoured by the Lebanese government.

The French-Lebanese singer was awarded the Lebanese National Order of Merit – Silver Palm, for his I Love Beirut concert.

 

In an image posted to his Instagram page, the pop star is seen holding the medal beside his brother, Fortune, with the Lebanese flag in the background.

 

In the post, Mika spoke of his pride at accepting the award, noting the sacrifices made by his family, as well as praising the resilient spirit of the Lebanese people.

 

"Today I think of my Lebanese grandmother, my mother, my aunts, my family, who brought the Lebanese soul to my life at home, in Paris, in London, everywhere I lived," he said on Instagram.

 

"Citizen of this uprooted world, Lebanon flows through my veins. This reciprocal love, so unexpected and so poignant, makes me happy and very proud of my heritage, especially in these difficult times for Lebanon. Thank you from me and all my family.”

A big production

The achievement caps off a worthy and momentous task for Mika.

Held on September 19, after the Lebanese capital's August 4 port explosion, Mika corralled friends and crew to produce the pre-recorded concert, which was shot in Beirut, London, Rome and Los Angeles. The show featured nearly a dozen guest singers, including Kylie Minogue, Rufus Wainwright and Lebanese artists such as poet Etel Adnan and indie group Mashrou’ Leila.

Proceeds from the ticketed streams went to Red Cross Lebanon and Save the Children, which both remain involved in the recovery efforts in Beirut.

 

Mika was born in Beirut before fleeing with his family to Paris in 1982 at the age of one, because of the civil war.

 

While a British citizen, he has never forgotten his roots. Throughout his 16-year career, with hits including Grace Kelly and Relax, Take It Easy, he has often spoke at length about the role his heritage plays in his work.

 

During his career, Mika has performed a number of sold-out concerts in Lebanon, including a 2010 appearance as part of the Baalbeck International Festival and a 2015 gig in Beirut.

 

In 2013, at the Mawazine Festival in Morocco, Mika said his dream project was to release an album of songs performed in English, Arabic and French.

 

He said the concept was inspired by growing up among the Lebanese diaspora in Paris. “I was surrounded by a people who spoke three languages in one sentence,” he said.

 

“I grew up listening to Arabic music in that context. I was listening to people like Fairuz and the purity of the likes of Umm Kulthum and all these other acts that I discovered. That made me realise how much of that clash of cultures has influenced my music."

The Lebanese ambassador pointed out that “the medal was awarded to an artist who succeeded in collecting music, poetry and colors at the same time, as a token of appreciation from an entire people to the person of the artist who adheres to his Lebanese roots, is distinguished by his humanity, and who has never hesitated to provide assistance to children with special needs.” In his speech, he valued "the enthusiasm of the artist who mobilized his energies after the tragedy of the fourth of August 2020, defying the health and social restrictions imposed, to organize a virtual concert in support of Lebanon, its capital and its people."

In honor of his artistic endeavors and his international successes, and in appreciation of his contribution to raising the image of Lebanon, the President of the Republic, General Michel Aoun, awarded the Silver Order of National Merit to the international artist of Lebanese origin, Mika.

It was imitated by the Lebanese Ambassador to France Rami Adwan in an official ceremony marked by a family atmosphere.

Le chanteur Mika reçoit la médaille de l'Ordre du Mérite libanais

 

Alors que son concert caritatif après les explosions qui ont dévasté le port de Beyrouth a récolté de nombreux dons, le chanteur Mika s'est vu remettre la médaille de l'Ordre du Mérite libanais.

Le 19 septembre dernier, le chanteur libano-britannique Mika, avait organisé un concert caritatif au profit des victimes de l'explosion dévastatrice du port de la ville de Beyrouth. Grâce à ce concert, l'artiste a récolté plus d'un million d'euros. Cette collecte de fonds était destinée à la Croix-Rouge libanaise et à l'ONG Save the Children.

 

Avec cette bonne action, Mika montre une fois de plus l'amour qu'il voue à son pays natal. C'est donc tout naturellement que le chanteur a reçu ce lundi 12 janvier 2021 les insignes de l'Ordre du Mérite au grade argenté des mains de l'ambassadeur du Liban en France, Rami Adwan. 

Très reconnaissant, Mika, bien connu des téléspectateurs de "The Voice" sur TF1 dont il a été le juré, s'est livré sur ses comptes Instagram et Facebook : "I Love Beirut, c'était un concert après le traumatisme de la catastrophe du port. L'ambassadeur Rami Adwan a quant à lui salué l'engagement de l'artiste en ces termes : "Ces insignes ont été remis à un artiste qui a réussi à mélanger la musique, la poésie et les couleurs à la fois. Cette décoration symbolise la gratitude de toute une population à cet artiste qui est attaché à ses racines libanaises et qui se démarque par son humanité. Il n'a jamais hésité à aider les enfants à besoins spécifiques".

On September 19, the Lebanese-British singer Mika, organized a charity concert for the benefit of the victims of the devastating explosion in the port of the city of Beirut. With this good deed, Mika once again shows the love he has for his homeland. It is therefore natural that the singer received this Monday, January 12, 2021 the insignia of the Order of Merit in the silver grade from the hands of the Lebanese Ambassador to France, Rami Adwan.

Very grateful, Mika, well known to viewers of "The Voice" on TF1 of which he was the juror, gave himself on his Instagram and Facebook accounts: "I Love Beirut, it was a concert after the trauma of the disaster from the port. I Love Beirut is my declaration of love to this city and this country which I left at the age of one and a half. I Love Beirut is what I want to say after having received the medal of the National Order of Merit at the Silver Palm. Today I think of my grandmother, my mother, my aunts, my family who from Paris to London kept the soul alive Lebanese at home. Citizen of the uprooted world, Lebanon flows through my veins. This heritage obliges me every day. This reciprocal love makes me happy and proud. "

Ambassador Rami Adwan, meanwhile, praised the artist's commitment in these terms: "These badges were awarded to an artist who has succeeded in mixing music, poetry and colors at the same time. This decoration symbolizes the gratitude of a whole population to this artist who is attached to his Lebanese roots and who stands out for his humanity.
