A five-star cast for a good cause

COMMITMENT “As artists, we have responsibilities”

STARS | The "Yellow Pieces Gala", broadcast this Saturday evening on France 2, offers for the first time a set of international artists.

We will find on stage the Americans Pharrell Williams and Kid Cudi, but also Mika, Vianney or Gims

ON THIS MISTY TUESDAY,

the Zenith of Paris is agitated. Preparations are accelerating. The next evening, the hall will welcome 4,000 spectators for an evening bringing together an unprecedented line-up of international artists: the “Yellow Pieces Gala”. A prime time broadcast this Saturday from 8:40 p.m. for the first time on Fran ce 2, and of which "le Parisien" - "Aujourd'hui en France" is a partner. With a notable event: the first television viewing in France of the Korean phenomenon Blackpink. Behind this masterstroke, we find… Brigitte Macron. At the beginning of December, the first lady, accompanied by cellist Gautier Capuçon, went to the Accor Arena in Paris to meet the quartet in full rehearsals for the two sold-out shows and convince them to come and perform. for Operation Yellow Coins. “They wanted to know more about the cause, confides to us the wife of the head of state. And it was very fast since they immediately accepted, all four of you. I was extremely touched. And it was just as easy for Pharrell Williams, Kid Cudi and all the artists. Because, for all of them, the fact of taking part in a program in favor of a charity association was a key element. “The Yellow Pieces clearly helped with the invitations,” admits Yannis Chebi, managing director of the Électron libre company, which is producing the evening. In addition to the performances, this gala is also an opportunity to recall the many actions linked to the operation and to the Hospital Foundation, chaired by the first lady.

Bold programming

Thanks to the millions of euros in donations collected each year, the famous cardboard piggy banks have made it possible to finance nearly 9,500 projects for hospitalized children and teenagers (creation of leisure areas, housing, etc.), 6,500 for the elderly. The Foundation claims a total of more than 15,700 achievements in three decades. Especially since, in recent years, the Yellow Pieces have broadened their field of action and seek to protect the younger generations as much as possible from violence in the family circle and from bullying at school. A subject that is close to the heart of singer Mika (see opposite), who did not hesitate for a second to come and sing. In addition to Blackpink, TV viewers will be able to discover an impressive audience of stars. The result of bold programming, according to the producer. "For four years, with Brigitte Macron and France Télévisions, we have been proposing an event for the home stretch of the operation," says Yannis Chebbi. We know that even large ceremonies can sometimes struggle to bring together so many people. But we realized that Fashion Week fell when we wanted to organize this special. These international artists were already in Paris and therefore inevitably more available. »

Rosalia, Beyoncé and Adele also approached

The organizers were able to take advantage of the help of the LVMH group (owner of the “Parisien – Today in France”) to convince these world stars. With a five-star ting case that nearly fleshed out. “We were in negotiations with the Spanish Rosalia, who unfortunately could not be released, says the production. We also spoke with Beyoncé, who was unable to come but who is well aware of the operation. And we had approached Adele… I'm not saying that they will necessarily be there next year, but we are keeping in touch. “In any case, for all those who answered present, when they were touched a word of the operation, all directly said yes”, applauds Gau tier Capuçon. He also took his phone to call friends and convince them to come. “Gims has done the same,” rejoices Brigitte Macron. On vacation, the artist made a return trip to Paris to sing “Do you love me? » and « the Same » with Vianney. And took the opportunity to make a phone call to his friend Soolking, with whom he shares the duet “Apres vous madame”. “Soolking confirmed his coming on Monday evening, we had to organize ourselves, but these are only good things”, confides Emmanuel Virot, concert programmer and responsible for this mix between pop songs and classical music. "This is what makes the soul of this gala," enthused Alexan dra Redde-Amiel and Michel Field, respectively director of entertainment and patron of live shows for public service. We seek to make this beautiful marriage between all genres, as between our specialties for each. "And Ms. Macron was a shock ambassador," says Gautier Capuçon. She is fully invested in being able to offer the best show possible. To make a donation: by SMS, send DON to 92.111, on Piecesjaunes.fr, in writing to Fondation des Hôpitaux (to the order of the Yellow Pieces), 9, rue Scribe 75009 Paris. Piggy banks can be left at post offices until February 4.

HE DID NOT HESITATE

a second. Just like the Korean group Blackpink, the American singers Pharrell Williams and Kid Cudi or the French Vianney, Gims and Gautier Capuçon, Mika directly agreed to take part in the “Yellow Pieces Gala”, broadcast this Saturday on France 2. A special program recorded on Wednesday at the Zenith in Paris, which the 39-year-old singer co-hosts with the other artists and for which he has planned two performances, including, for the very first time, "Keep it Simple", his new single in duet with Vianney released on January 20 on the platforms.

Why is it important, as an artist, to support a cause such as the Yellow Pieces on television?

MIKA. When you are lucky enough to have a special bond with the public, you also have responsibilities, in particular that of encouraging people to live together. Like everyone else, I am obviously sensitive to these children who are affected by the disease. It seems natural to me to be able to help them a little.

The Yellow Pieces also help children who are victims of bullying. A subject that touched me personally (he was the victim of school harassment in his youth). I want to be able to tell them that one day we will get out of it.

You have prepared a very special performance with the Philharmonic Orchestra. Was it important to offer something unique on this occasion?

What drives me every time is to offer new, different things, which allow me to broaden my artistic palette. In line with what I was able to initiate at the Philharmonie de Paris (during a series of concerts in the fall of 2021), I am happy to share it in prime time on France 2 with as many people as possible. .

During rehearsals and the evening, Brigitte Macron was in the front row. Was she an important support for the artists?

The first lady wanted a show worthy of the cause she defends (she is president of the Hospital Foundation and sponsor of Operation Yellow Pieces). She wanted the artists to feel good so that they could offer the best of themselves.

It is also the best setting to present "Keep it Simple", your new single in duet with Vianney. Does this reinforce the event side for you?

I was not at all in a promotional approach. The truth of our complicity with Vianney shines through on the air. We were happy to sing for this cause.

COULISSESI A hot show, beautiful people in the stands

“EXCUSE ME, are there still places? asks a young woman near the Zénith de Paris this Wednesday, before leaving with a sign in her hand in honor of the Korean group Blackpink. For this “Yellow Pieces Gala”, recorded shortly before its broadcast this Saturday evening, the public came in droves. Some 4,000 people paid their ticket €15 for the benefit of the operation in favor of hospitalized children. Above all to see the four most fashionable girls of the moment across the world. “The vast majority of spectators must have been under 30, analyzes Gautier Capuçon, one of the guests of this evening. It's good, it also allows people to discover classical music who may not be aware of it. However, if a large part of the audience wanted to attend the first appearance on French television of the quartet made up of Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé and Lisa, everyone played the game. Whether with Pharrell Williams, opening the ball by going to play with the madman on "Happy". Or with Gims, Mika, Vianney and Kid Cudi a few moments later. Without forgetting equally acclaimed classical pieces, and a tribute to Johnny Hallyday by Yvan Cassar and the symphony orchestra on "Requiem pour un fou" which made the voice of the Taulier resonate throughout the room and thus provoked some shivers. If the temperatures were negative outside, the atmosphere was boiling at the Zenith. Among the spectators, familiar faces stood out. Obviously those of the first lady, Brigitte Macron, and the coach of the Blues, Didier Deschamps, sponsors of the Yellow Pieces for several years and organizers of this "Gala". But, also, a few seats away, the tennis player Roger Federer or Nic ky Doll and Kam Hugh, two of the emblematic drag queens of the first edition of “Drag Race France”. We also met radio host Fred Musa as well as singer La Zarra, representing France at Eurovision next May. Not to mention the leaders of France Télévisions. No Angela, however. Well present on the screen, the Belgian offered a version of her title “Taxi” recorded the day before for the sake of scheduling.

Blackpink accompanied by Gautier Capuçon

In the middle of the evening, another guest appeared in the stands: Emmanuel Macron. Relaxed and installed to the left of Didier Des Champs, the President of the Republic was in the front row to applaud Gau tier Capuçon, Michel Polna reff, Christine and the Queens-Redcar or the little violin prodigy Daniel Lozakovich. Like everyone else, the Head of State was watching for the appearance of the Black Pink singers, scheduled for the very end of the evening. The four Koreans sang two titles, reworked for the occasion. First "Pink Venom" where they were accompanied on the cello by Gautier Capuçon. Then “Shut Down”, with an introduction by Daniel Lozakovich covering “La Campanella” by Pagani ni. All in a supercharged atmosphere. To the point of barely distinguishing the voices of the performers amid the screams of the fans. “It’s simple, I couldn’t even hear myself in my headset! smiles Gautier Capuçon. And a France Télévisions executive concluded: “We will now have to successfully edit… and make sure that we hear them! »
