Brighton and Hove Pride 2024: Day two highlights in pics, from Gabrielle to Mika

Lynks, S Club and Peaches also performed at Fabuloso Pride in the Park yesterday, as Brighton Pride reached its epic finale

Back for its 51st year, Brighton and Hove Pride 2024 reached an epic – and practically rain-free! – finale yesterday (Sunday 4 August 2024).

Mika ‘tried a little Freddie’

We can all but guarantee tens of thousands of people in Brighton and beyond are today humming ‘Grace Kelly’, ‘Big Girl (You Are Beautiful)’ and any number of Mika’s other irresistibly catchy showstoppers. It would have been hard to best Nadine, Cheryl, Nicola and Kimberley’s hit-laden set from the night before, but Mika had the crowd eating out the palm of his hand whether they knew his songs or not – such is the power of his whimsical lyrics, grandiose musicality and wildly expressive vocal stylings. Oh, and his multiple outfits, ranging from a devil-angel hybrid look with wings, to a cannabis-motif suit. Also, how does he look the same as in 2007?!

Brighton and Hove Pride returns in August 2025.

One last video, it's a bit shaky, but that's because everything went mad - it's at the end of Love Today, when the entire crowd were "flying" with Mika, the lasers, smoke and fireworks went off, and everyone just got crazy high.  :mika1::cheer:

 😍😍😍🥰🥰🥰🥳🥳🥳❤️❤️❤️

Brighton Pride 2024 review - the UK's most fabulous festival

Mika makes the weekend with a musical celebration of joy and acceptance

Brighton’s Preston Park came alive this weekend in the most magnificently colourful, sparkling and diverse celebration of love in all its forms for the UK's most famous LGBTQ+ community fundraiser.

Sunday was a bouncier, more chilled and family friendly event with fairground rides spinning and the sun shining for ABBA cover band Bjorn Again who lit up the afternoon with some kitsch classics “Super Trooper”, “Voulez-Vous”, “Mamma Mia” and “Dancing Queen”. With their bubbly chat, and voices that sound so like the original band, the crowd’s smiles grew as dazzling as the band’s sheeny outfits.

Gabrielle’s mellow soul and soft voice bought us songs of hope and empowerment with “Sunshine”, “Rise” and “Dreams” and a sweet little ditty where she sang “you’re gorgeous and so are you and you” to her adoring crowd. S Club 7 then burst onto the stage in diamante covered tie-dye rainbow costumes, all looking somehow exactly the same as they did 20 years ago. Energetically delivering “Don’t Stop Moving”, “Bring It All Back”, “Two In A Million” and finishing with “Reach”, they took us all firmly back to the nineties and noughties.

It was Mika’s Sunday night set that really made the weekend what it was – a celebration of pride in who you are and a warm sense of belonging, celebrated with music and performance. I wish I could have bottled the gorgeousness somehow, just to re-live the feeling of joy and beauty that he radiated around the entire outdoor arena.

The stage welcomes us to ‘Club Apocolypso’ as a sharp-suited Mika tells us that “all the Gods and Goddesses and everything that’s in between are with us tonight” and that the common denominator between us all is love, before breaking into an epic rendition of “Origin of Love” with a deeply genuine warmth shining out towards everyone in the audience.

Speaking candidly about the difficulty of coming out as a teenager, he shares thoughts and words with the crowd, and seems to be absorbing the love everyone responds with, with a sense of sweet, almost bewildered wonder.

At some point he jumps off the stage and walks through the entire crowd, borrowing fans hairbands, squeezing himself all the way through the middle and turning everything on its head, as together, we “re-create the Butterfly Lounge”, singing along to “Big Girls You are Beautiful” for his last gig of the summer, as rainbow paper confetti is strewn across the crowd.

From the club lounge to the night sky, he tells us all we’re “little stars” as phones light up the night sky and we sway along to “Underwater”. Whether donning massive red wings for “Relax, Take It Easy”, showering himself in flowers for “We Are Golden”, singing under lazer lights for “Grace Kelly” or bouncing up and down as finale fireworks explode above the stage for “Love Today”, Mika’s wide smile and enthusiasm is infectious. His energy is so vibrant and spirit so generous you can’t help but be swept away in the authentic message of acceptance and the huge fun of the music.

Mika’s an official Brightonian now, having moved here just before he got the call asking him to perform at this year’s Pride, and it’s a joy to feel how much he means every word, note and nuance as he sings “Happy Ending” knowing that this is vibrant town is now his home.

Mika Headlines Fabuloso in the Park (Brighton Pride)

Every August, Brighton turns into a haven of love, acceptance and celebration as Pride comes into town. The Brighton & Hove Pride LGBTQ+ Community Day Parade opened the weekend under this year’s theme of JOY: celebrating life, spirit, and resilience. The parade wound through the city streets towards Preston Park in its usual spectacular colour and style. Around 300,000 people took to the streets to participate in this year’s parade and a whopping £1.4 million has been raised to support essential LGBTQ+ community groups. Once at the park, pride flags towered above the crowd who dressed head to toe in bright colours, sequins and feathers. It is clear that this is a place where everyone and anyone is welcome and you can just be yourself.

.

.

.

Walking out in an all white outfit with a jacket casually thrown over his shoulder, Mika grinned from ear to ear as he took in the roars of the crowd. He looked so comfortable on stage, waving to fans in the crowd blowing kisses to the audience. He suddenly turned his back to put the jacket on, displaying the personalised Brighton Pride rainbow applique sewn on the back. The opening notes of ‘Ice Cream’ began to play as he raced around the stage posing at the end of the walkway, taking in the screams from the audience. This man knows how to put on a show!

Above all though, he is the epitome of love and joy. He's the perfect headline for this event. Throughout his set, he told stories of his own past growing up in the world as a member of the LGBTQ+ community. He shared memories of his first experience of a gay club and how accepted he felt, and he shared how the community continues to act with grace even when times are hard.

Moving into his hit song ‘Big Girl’, he explained the meaning behind the popular track "Butterfly Lounge", explaining it was a real place in California (now closed) for larger women to hang out as they were often turned away from the clubs in town. He loved that place and wanted to recreate the vibe with the audience, making it a space where everyone and anyone can dance and have fun. He moved through the audience throughout the track, barely visible by the cameras as he was swarmed by feather boas and rainbow flags. As he finally made his way out of the crowd, he climbed up onto the stage before leaving for a short while.

He returned to the stage wearing gigantic red feathered wings and matching red trousers. The wings seemed to move like real wings, spreading and retracting as he walked. Although the wings looked incredibly heavy, this did not stop Mika from running and jumping to his next song "Relax (Take It Easy)". On each chorus, he jumped high into the air, and his voice never faltered. He continued regularly changing costumes (around four/five times overall).

He ended his performance with three hits: "Grace Kelly", "Happy Ending" and "We Are Golden". He showcased his musical talent, playing the piano at times during these songs. He exited the stage a short while before coming back for his encore performance of "Love Today" - a perfect song accompanied with a huge firework display to end a fantastic weekend.

Overall, the weekend was a perfect display of what the LGBTQ+ community is all about. At a time when there is so much hate going on in the world and in the UK, it was a safe haven for people to be themselves without any judgement or prejudice.

Brighton Pride A Resounding Success

The organisers of Brighton & Hove Pride 2024 hailed the event as a “weekend of joy and celebration,” attracting about 300,000 attendees to the city’s parade. This was followed by two days of concerts at Preston Park, featuring headliners Girls Aloud and Mika.

A spokesperson noted the event “brought music, culture, and joy in abundance for another spectacular year.”

Mika shared his excitement, calling Brighton his “first ever proper Pride concert” and revealed he had recently moved near the city.

Departing from Hove Lawns on Saturday morning, the parade headed through the centre of Brighton and finished at Preston Park, where spectators will watch Girls Aloud at We Are Fabuloso, the official Brighton & Hove Pride charity fundraiser.

S Club and Olly Alexander also performed, contributing to the £1.3m raised for the Brighton Rainbow Fund. Alf le Flohic, who helped lead the parade, described the atmosphere as “very special.”

Controversially the Coca-Cola float in Saturday’s Brighton Pride parade was halted when protesters blocked the route. Brighton Pavilion MP Sian Berry and other demonstrators argued that Coca-Cola is an inappropriate sponsor for the event.

According to Green Party literature shared on Ms. Berry’s X account, Coca-Cola has been urged for years to remove its factory from illegally occupied land in Palestine but has not complied. Coca-Cola stated it respects the right to peaceful protest and decided to withdraw the float due to safety concerns for its staff and attendees.
