Mika discovers Origin of Love as he gets electronic for third album

STV 19 October 2012 16:45 BST

Mika takes on an electronic sound on his new album The Origin of Love – but he wanted to make sure his music didn't sound like typical European-flavored dance tunes.

"There's this kind of electronic thing in there as well, but I didn't want the electronic influences on my record to be a kind of Euro dance thing with a huge beat that hits you over the head every 30 seconds," the singer explained. "I wasn't into that. I wanted it to sound kind of heartfelt and quite delicate."

Mika's album, though, features well-known dance producers, like Klas Ahlund, best known for his work with Swedish singer Robyn. The album also includes production work by Benny Benassi and Nick Littlemore of Empire of the Sun.

Mika calls his album's sound "joy chasing".

He explained: "I was just trying to make music that would make me happy and if it can make me happy, then maybe it would make somebody else happy, too.

"You know, music is a type of medicine. You make it for yourself and then sometimes other people catch on to it."

Mika, who was born in Lebanon and then moved to Paris then to London, says his third album is his most personal-to-date.

"The record is written in a way where it's kind of like a personal diary over the course of eight months," the singer said. "It's the story of a 28-year-old guy trying to figure out what kind of person he wants to be for the next 10 years and trying to figure out how to be happy for the next 10 years."

The Origin of Love was released this week in the UK.
