  1. Is that so?

I think I have some language issue here. I don't get how being sensible is related to liking Mika.

    I'm still thinking about that.

Yeah, I forecast many tv shows will mock him, and radio stations as well, along with my husband and my friends.

Every random italian gets immediately aware that the two songs are related since the very first listening. I'll try to have my mom listen to it and see if she can relate Talk about you with sarà perchè ti amo. That will be the ultimate test, if she spots the ressemblance, then that's it, there's no way out.

But I'm not sure that will be a total failure.

Everybody, deep inside, secretly loves sarà perchè ti amo. But no one would ever admit it (but me), cause it's kind of lame. But it's cute and lighthearted and funny and catchy. And it strikes a chord like all those old items do (say floppy disks, telephone boxes, Glo Wormes, Belle and Sebastian, Popples, and omg Care Bears :wub2:)

Talk about you might give them a great excuse to feel that vibe with no shame. No one really cares whether the two songs sound alike, except us, who like to talk and argue about Mika's work.

Of course, that wouldn't help him to get a great song writer status, but I don't think he really ever got that halo. People don't think about him as a Freddy Mercury or Bocelli, they think about him as a cute and lighthearted and funny singer.

So, I'm not sure that this song wouldn't work in Italy.

I don't know about that - it seemed he was on his way there in 2008 when he won the prestigious Ivor Novello Songwriter of the Year award.

  2. I think, at this point, it's best not to be bothered ourselves. As Christine pointed out, in one post of hers, for our own peace of mind, we have to get over the fact he's not going to be a popstar in the UK, for the foreseeable future.

It's either that, or move on. A few days ago (I'll be completely honest here) I was on the verge of moving on, but then I heard the song and loved it.

I then thought to myself. We know the song won't do well in the UK, so it's best not to raise our hopes, or expect anything here. We can follow his career in other countries, via the MFC and be excited for his success.

So I've re-booted my expectations. It's either that, or I'd have to stop being his fan, and I can't do that. So I'm following him now, as a foreign artist, and not thinking of him in terms of a British popstar.

For now, this is all we can do. Hopefully, something will bring him back to some form of recognition in the UK, but we can't sit here holding our breath, so I'm not going to.

That sums it up beautifully! :thumb_yello:

  3. lol people are actually arguing on the sexuality of this song? I think that's very silly. I think its a lovely song when I first heard the snippit i wasn't a fan but as soon as i heard the full song I was captivated. Mika makes me see the romance in the french language, speaking as someone who couldn't stand the language before hand I think that's saying a lot. I am very fond of the music in it, it has this kind of...Latin salsa sound to it that i just adore. I ABSOLUTELY love the passion in his voice nearing the middle of the song, its like he has all this energy inside and he has to get it out through the lyrics and melody of the song. I have to disagree with Claire though...while I respect your feelings and opinion on the matter, I think it is lovely hes describing sex as this obsessive compulsive thing. What is love if not passionate and obsessive? If a person look at their spouse and the thought of being with them doesn't rattle through their bones than I would be sad for that person. love is not a faint candle used for illuminating small spaces love is a bonfire with huge licking flames, something that if you let it, could consume you entirely. I think this is something that Mika has represented for years...for almost his whole career. Mika has never hidden this fact and I hope that he never does because we need more attitudes like his. At the end of the day if the song makes you so uncomfortable just don't listen, but I don't think its a bad thing, sometimes its good to be uncomfortable.

Of course! Its his contribution to the world cup spirit....:naughty:

I like the video - much better than his usual efforts! Still think it sounds like a Eurovision entry though. Really we have to face up to it - he's more interested in Italy and France than UK and USA. Fair enough really, neither market has been kind to him.

I'm rethinking Mika - just can't relate to him in his prim suits and expensive shoes - what happened to the lad of 2007 who was such a breath of fresh air and so inclusive and relatable? Oh well.... will still get his next album

  6. And the reason why they sell more records is because they do proper promo when the new album comes out.

What has frustrated me most with Mika doing promo in the UK is that he tends to go onto online radio stations that most of us here never listen to.

So how that is supposed to get him any airplay on bigger stations completely baffles me!

These other artists, over the last few years made LESS money than Mika, the rich list for stars under 30 was testsment to that, as Mika was in the top 10 and the other artists weren't. So it had nothing to do with the money aspect.

    Agree:thumb_yello:

  7. We came back to the same discussion again...

Well for me it is like this:

    1. Go to the talent shows in Italy and France to make MONEY!

    2. Go to the studio to record new album (using MONEY)

    3. Make the promotion for the new record (using MONEY)

    4. Go on tour.

Of course he can sell his houses, risk all he has and then make an album and promotion. But Mika in 2014 is not Mika from 2006. He's famous enough to earn money for his records using less hard ways like doing couple of talent shows :mf_rosetinted: I really don't understand why fans don't understand (sorry :aah:) he needs money to make music :fisch:

And why he can't say he feels uncomfortable in the UK if it's true. I always have an impression he feels more cosy in France, so I let him feel what he feels.

But I agree with one thing: he surely NEED to make all the efforts to come back to the UK and US with his 4th album, because these are the main music markets :thumb_yello: And I don't mean XF or something like this :teehee: I mean MUSIC! He can choose the easy way and go to the places he's welcomed already like France and Italy. But it's not the best idea. He wanted to conquer the world and I hope he still wants it :blush-anim-cl:

I really don't think he does anymore

I don't think him being marketed as 'foreign' was the problem, personally I think the rot started with the videos for TBWKTM. That album didn't do him any favours. If TOOL had come first I wonder if things would be different...

  8. Thank you for the kind mentions :huglove:

I do agree with Sabine, I think that this problem is in the whole world, also in the "non fan" world / life. Most people are only interested in what is easy and don't need to be thought about. It's easier to stay with what is superficial (beauty, gossip...) than to try to understand the inside of people or things.

Even if I find it boring personaly (and I'm not happy that there are many Mika fans like that), I also can understand why maybe they are like that: I think most people are simply tired of the stress or the problems in their life, and want something "light" to forget about it.

I heard that research has been done showing that the internet has led to a reduction in ability to concentrate or to handle complex arguments. We are so impatient on the internet, more so than real life I think (hope)

  9. I don't think he is acting at his shows, except when he is doing his little "plays" like shooting or joking with Max etc and even those moments he is often improvising. I rather call it performing and it can be very sincere. It's a planned performance and he has his routines, of course. He might even have same little chats in several shows but it always depends on what kind of contact he has with the audience/what's his mood and if he is feeling good he talks directly from the heart and it's easy to see he is having genuinely fun in some songs and that there's real feeling in some other songs.

I want to hear him singing, too. Even if it's only one song with someone else it's always a pleasure. There are also some other things I always look forward to almost as much as singing. Love his columns and would love to hear another podcast (about his inspiration, music, soundtracks etc). Knowing about his inspiration and about him as person gives more meaning to his songs, imo.

I really like the way you put that, and agree with you :thumb_yello:

  10. What do you call making the same speeches every night, pretending to shoot the band, using the same dance moves, etc. What about his music videos? What about all his other TV performances? I don't see the difference.

But - I haven't seen him live for a while, but the gigs I've been to definitely weren't all exactly the same. Some nights he was chatty, some nights not and when he talked to the audience it wasn't about the same things at all. Also he tried things out musically, adapting and playing with the songs. OK that must have had to be rehearsed, but it gave a feeling of freshness. His gigs, to me, were exciting to be at partly because I felt I was at something unique and different which won't just be replicated the next day.

I agree with you about TV and videos

  11. Oh my god... That is incredibly sad. :tears:I cannot understand how someone else's, possibly a total stranger's, personal life could bother someone so much. Hate crimes like this are extremely tragic and a manifestation of what the human nature is capable of at its worst.

I know!! Its ridiculous - its not as if they have to be gay! Stonewall summed it up so well 'If you don't approve of gay relationships then we strongly recommend you don't have a relationship with someone of the same sex'. And as they put it elsewhere

'Some people are gay - get over it'

  12. Yes that it what I mean. I don't believe anyone would willingly choose these beliefs as an adult because they are masochistic and unnatural. No one is going to spend their childhood free of these ideas and then suddenly decide as an adult that everything that they do is being watched and judged by some malevolent force who will sentence them to an eternity in hell if they follow their natural instincts and do the things that make them happy. It could only be the result of a lifetime of cultural and religious conditioning or some serious psychological disorder like schizophrenia.

    You put it well

  13. for me personally i can say that god is the same for me like any other fairytales of my childhood. as a child i believed in santa claus, in fairies and monsters, and in god (i was brought up catholic). of course you will say it's not the same, but for me there's no difference, except that the belief that there's a god is widely accepted, and the belief that there are fairies isn't. at some point i learned to believe only in things that i can see or feel or for which there is a scientific explanation.

i never really thought about *why* this is like it is, but laurel's post made me think that bullying might indeed have been a reason. as a child your life depends on other people, you trust your family that they protect you, and where they can't, maybe you trust god that he does. but when something bad happens to you that no one can protect you from, not even your prayers, and you absolutely fail to see the meaning of why this happened, even keeps happening again and again, then you might lose your faith. :dunno:

of course the fact that i don't believe in god doesn't mean i want to burn churches or support this in any way, it's absolutely not the same! churches for me are beautiful buildings, they have a special atmosphere, and i totally respect and understand that those who believe in god love those places and that this atmosphere and their prayers there make them feel calm and better.

maybe there is some sort of higher power, we all still know too little about this world to be absolutely sure. but the god i was taught about in my childhood doesn't exist for me, those are nothing but fairytale stories for me. :wink2:

    Me too

I also think religion is a way to cope with the fear of death and of 'not being'

    Hmmm bit gloomy...sorry

On a happier note, I am really delighted for Mika - and also for myself as about to become proud Mum to a 3 month old kitten! Wheee!!

Sorry, just had to share that

  14. Shame to say this words about all religions because this do not tally with the desire to live as you want. I do not know what religion forbids blood transfusions. There are many sects. I'm not with them. I am a blood donor. Religion does not forbid me to donate blood. But if it is banned, then I would still be a blood donor. Because this saves more lives. But friends and relatives say, that I ceased to be a donor. It is possible that I have strayed to the rescue. I always wanted someone to save . Doctors, rescuers and firefighters are my heroes.I condemn abortion. It is impossible to live in peace and know that you killed your child. It will forever remain in your memory. This weakness will not atone for any prayers.

Good for you for being a blood donor, but I really object to your sweeping condemnation of abortion. Maybe you should condemn less and seek to understand more. For me the most powerful words in Christianity are Christ's:

'Let him who is without sin cast the first stone'.

If you want to rescue someone there are many suffering animals that need help.

  15. Sometimes I actually feel bad for him because he deserves so much better :( But he does seem happy nowadays so, hmm... Maybe he does have some big plans for the future to give his career a boost? We'll see I guess.

Maybe he's gone as far as he wants to with his career and its about maintaining it, not conquering the world anymore. That might make sense of the France show, keeping his profile high there. I don't sense he has much ambition in relation to the UK now. Who knows...

  16. I agree that it may be difficult to create quality work between so many public appearances, but I think that we will be able to judge about this quality only when we will hear the result.

For now I choose to trust him (I have easily faith in someone :wink2:), it seems he truly believes that he can do both. And who better than him can know that?

About him telling 2 opposite things, it's not chocking me at all (even if I was not in Mika world in 2011 :teehee: so that's maybe why I don't feel hurt by it): sometimes people are really believing their own words at the time they say it, then life changes and they change themselves. So they will say opposite words one or 2 years after, but still truly believe in it.

They don't intend to lie to someone, they just changed their mind in between!

What I mean is that maybe in 2011 he needed to disappear to get inspired, but now he may need to be in the real life to write, who knows? I think he said something like that in an interview once.

I'm confused - was he hidden away for TOOL? Ignore me, will catch up soon, still on page 12...:sorry:

  17. I trust people's actions not their words. Especially if they are conflict with one other.

In 2011 Mika told fans to trust him. That he needed to be in hiding to create his album. Now he is saying he can just book some studio time in between these huge commitments and public appearances and produce the same quality work. I don't find it easy to trust someone's word when they are telling you two exact opposite things and asking you to base your trust on nothing but faith. I'll believe it when I see it.

But people change. My guess is after LICM he thought that he had to 'be in hiding', produced TBWKTM, and then realised he needed to be out there working with people and - voila - TOOL. :yay:

  18. I'm already visualize the picture: we all waving our shinny crutches in the air during Happy Ending :wub2: ....and at the m&g,getting his autograph on them :teehee:

Perhaps there will be a competition for the most artistic crutch design. With a special preview of album 4 at a private concert as the prize....

I think the Voice has more credibility than X Factor and am not that surprised to see Mika on it - was very surprised re X Factor which I don't think makes any sense at all. Will we be able to see the French Voice in UK?

  19. That's one of the qualities in him I really don't appreciate :aah: Enough with the love for contradicting himself; It makes him look really ignorant in my opinion, especially in these kinds of statements he makes in interviews. Contradictions in music though, musically, fine, that's brilliant to me.

I wish he'd just be himself, and not hide still. That's a kind interpretation - alternative is apathy on his part which is the great enabler of abuse.

Wonder if his family is very religious and he doesn't want to offend them too much - they are his emotional centre.

  20. Just as I will allow myself the privelege of having a happy childhood and not bother empathizing with the bullying that he carries on and on about for the millionth time just moments earlier? I just can't get over the self absorption required to complain over and over about your childhood torment while wilfully ignoring that the fact that there is institionalized pedophilia in the Catholic church and thousands upon thousands of children have suffered not just because of the actions of local priests but the criminal way it was handled all the way up the chain to the former pope.

    WTFever.

Well said! I find it horrifying that the (last) pope didn't lead on eradicating child abuse in the RC. Not sure what this one's views are.

  21. Don't forget Gary B's bezzie-mate Robbie Williams.

This is what is so frustrating. RW has been invited onto every concert Gary Barlow has organised, even when he didn't have a new song or album to promote. This is why he's stayed current, and despite Radio One not playing his songs, he got to be #1 in the UK.

Mika doesn't have anyone of influence on his side. Gary doesn't invite him onto any big concerts and he SHOULD have invited him onto the Olympic one really, but he didn't. It really is very sad.

I know I'm not a "popular chick" for wanting the rumours to be true, regarding Eurovision, but this is the reason why I want it to be true. Mika really does need an international platform to perform on. This could be it.

He does know a lot of very successful people though (Katy, Lady Gaga, Adele, Kanye West). I like that he doesn't use them to get ahead, but it would be nice if they did something behind the scenes for him.
