You can say when it is happening (in present):

 

"She is on her period"

"She is having her period"

 

 

If it was in the past, you'd say:

 

"She was on her period"

"She has had her period"

 

 

but there also are little codes that people use in English you know, "It's her time of the month", "the painters are in" etc.

"The painters are in?"

We use the first one in dutch as well.

English is quite confusing if it is not your first language.

 

I'm a native speaker and I get confused sometimes with English grammar.

 

Yeah well... It gets even more confusing when different people give you different answers
