  1. Insects are very active so their muscles need a lot of oxygen.

    They have spiracles which open when they need oxygen and close when they dont, this prevents water loss.

    The spiracles lead into a system of tubes called TRACHEOLES and this is where gas exchange takes place.

    Tracheoles are adapted for gas exchange because they a very moist, and have a large surface area.

    Air is pumped in and out of the tracheoles to maintain a steep concentration gradient.

    The tracheloes come into close contact with the insects cells so gas exchange is very effective.

    Insect have no blood supply!
