A Love letter about adolescence in order not to choose to be invisible

 

I talk about my dialogue with Ivan Cotroneo, the film maker of Un bacio, and the choice to be there with a song. It is a film in which teenagers can recognize themselves without feeling treated with paternalism, and with which adults can empathize, thinking back to how they were at their age.

In July 2008, Ivan Cotroneo was drinking his morning coffee at a small bar in Provincetown, Massachusetts. The writer, now film maker, had just finished translating Where the land ends by Michael Cunningham, a novel that celebrates one of the oldest and liberals cities of America . After working there for many months, he had wanted to go and see Cunningham, and to visit the city in person. It was that morning, over coffee, that Cotroneo read a Newsweek article about the murder of Lawrence King, a fifteen year old gay boy, a student of a high school in Oxnard, California. One of his schoolmate shot him in class, Brandon McInerney, of which King had fallen in love. For several weeks, McInerney was teased in public by King.

"I was shocked by the violence of this murder among teenagers. I was sitting in a cafe in a city that represents America's future, and I was reading a story that seemed to come from a distant past. "

More than a year later, Cotroneo was in the midst of a crowd of several thousands of protesters in Rome, in front of the parliament. They were waiting that the government would vote a draft for an anti-discrimination law, which would have made illegal the homophobia. The draft law was rejected and the crowd was angry. "From now on, it will be their fault. Whenever we will be the subject of cruelty, it will be their fault, "he shouted one protester of just 19 years beside Cotroneo.

"I came home with the feeling to do something. I had to somehow help to change things, " says Cotroneo, telling me on the phone the moment he decided to write a fictional adaptation, set in Italy, of the murder of Larry King. "I wanted to show how discrimination can be destructive, even in people so young."

The book, Un Bacio, tells the story of two high school students. A gay boy adopted, Lorenzo, who befriends and falls in love for Antonio, a heterosexual classmate and basketball star, saddened by the death of his older brother. The story ends like the one of Larry King, with Anthony desperate that shoots to Lorenzo in the classroom. During the promotion of the book, Cotroneo toured for high schools and listened to students' reactions that had read it. Even if he was received with enthusiasm and empathy, Cotroneo soon saw that he had made a serious mistake.

"I met so many teenagers who felt frustrated and sometimes angry for not being included in the story. They kept telling me that they were not immune to these problems - explains Cotroneo - I understand that discriminations are linked together. "

This awareness and the words of the girls who had met accompanied him for years. When he decided to make the film, he thought to correct the mistake and so he inserted the most enigmatic character in the story, a teenage girl called Blue. Blue is an outsider, that hides her previous experiences of abuse, fearing that their classmates and family members can consider her dirty or contaminated. It is an aspect that it'is part of every teenager girl and has an important role in the film.

Antonio, Lorenzo and Blue form a triangle of friendship and love. In one way or another all three are discriminated and isolated. They are real characters, funny and obnoxious at the same time. Blue is funny and intelligent, but can be cruel and cold. Antonio is determined and thoughtful, but he is prone to fits of rage and cruelty access. Lorenzo is an explosion of colors and honesty, but easily becomes offensive and obnoxious.

After the death of Lorenzo, they are all three victims and all three have the life ruined. To push them to the crime is not what they are or what they do, but the environment in which they live and the isolation caused of the discrimination which they must undergo. It is the story of how a seemingly irrelevant discrimination can lead to an unexpected tragedy.

It is a brave and important film, not for the ending sensation, which is indeed the easy part. It's brave for a human way and tender with which tells the story. Because it gives voice and illuminates the darkest and most difficult part of growing up, and it does so with respect. It is more than just a warning, it is a painful love letter to adolescence. Cotroneo made a film in which teenagers can recognize themselves without feeling treated with paternalism, and with which adults can empathize, thinking about as they were at their age. The complex trio shows the futility of the labels and the difficulties of adolescence, emphasizing once again that it is impossible to generalize when talking about sexuality and love.

I composed the music for the film and I made a music video with Ivan Cotroneo, after seeing a preview and I met six months ago the writer at his home in Rome. I found that the film was shot with love and had an original tone, deeply "pop", but serious and funny at the same time. In person, Cotroneo is a private man. An observer of the surrounding world and a tireless worker. He writes every day, and this project is the result of an eight-year journey.

After watching the film, we talked about it and he has changed, becoming lively and talkative. He talked for hours without stopping until three-thirty in the morning, while his producer was trying not to show she was falling asleep on the couch. I realized that this film touched him personally. His characters are exuberant, as he is usually discreet and prudent. I suspect it stems from his teenage years, he has learned to become invisible for fear of being the object of cruelty or discrimination. His characters, full of life and chaotic, have his revenge, and he does not seem to have ended.

"Do you think this film can help to change things?" I ask the phone. "I do not know, and maybe I'll never know." In any case, the film and its characters have already changed him.

 

The story of Larry King and his murder is a bit more complicated because Larry was misidentified as gay by the news media, when in fact he was experimenting with his gender expression, and in 2008 transgender issues were very marginalized, especially in news and media.

In Hear This, The A.V. Club writers sing the praises of songs they know well. This week: In honor of the Oscars, songs named after celebrities.

Mika, “Grace Kelly” (2007)

As far as I can tell, there’s a long history of artists being told by their record company to be a certain way, which leads to them refusing, writing a song about it, and it charting. Pink accomplished this with the popular 2001 single “Don’t Let Me Get Me,” blatantly calling out record executive L.A. Reid—“L.A. told me, ‘You’ll be a pop star / All you have to change is everything you are.’” Sara Bareilles also comes to mind with her 2007 hit single “Love Song,” a tongue-in-cheek response to her record label demanding “radio friendly” songs. “I’m not gonna write you to stay / If your heart is nowhere in it / I don’t want it for a minute,” Bareilles sings in protest.

In the same vein, Mika’s 2007 hit “Grace Kelly” rallied against the corporate machine and became one of the U.K.-based artist’s most popular songs. After his label executives tried to model his look and sound on Craig David, another popular U.K. artist, Mika felt frustrated at the thought of adopting different identities to please others: “I try to be like Grace Kelly / But all her looks were too sad / So I try a little Freddie / I’ve gone identity mad!” Grace Kelly, the movie star and Princess Of Monaco, is an interesting choice for Mika (who would go on to be compared to Freddie Mercury because of similar vocals) to sing about, and one that isn’t entirely explained. The bit of dialogue used in the song is from the film The Country Girl, which garnered two Oscars, including Best Actress for Kelly. But other than her name serving as a clever wink at pop culture, the song harkens more toward Freddie Mercury, Elton John, and Brian May, with its impressive vocals and stellar piano and guitar work.

Mika dropped a new music video for “Hurts (Remix)” this week featuring an anti-bullying message.

In the video, the British singer helps three teenagers deal with verbal bulling. Together, they paint over a wall scribbled in insults written in Italian and English.

“Nothing’s only words, that’s how hearts get hurt,” Mika sings on the track.

“Hurts (Remix)” is included on the Italian deluxe version of Mika’s latest album “No Place in Heaven.”

Mika, who is gay, has spoken out about homophobia he has faced by posting pictures of posters with homophobic slurs on them on his social media accounts.

“I saw the photos and my instinct was not to do anything, because hatred, which I know very well, would be better off ignored,” Mika tweeted according to Pop Crush. “But let’s break the silence! I have no fear of those who discriminate against me—no one should. Love does what it wants.”

VIDÉO - Le chanteur britannico-libanais vient d'offrir un clip pour la version remixée de l'un de ses morceaux issus de No Place in Heaven, son dernier album. Il y aborde le thème des violences et des humiliations à l'école pour mieux les dénoncer.

Mika entend utiliser sa musique pour mieux dénoncer. Dans son dernier clip, qui illustre le remix officiel de Hurts et diffusé le 5 février, le chanteur franco-libanais a choisi d'affronter le sujet du harcèlement scolaire.

Devant un mur d'insultes en anglais et en italien, Mika alerte ses auditeurs. Immiscé dans un établissement scolaire, il joue aux anges gardiens pour tenter de sauver plusieurs élèves de l'humiliation et des violences verbales ou physiques. Mika prend le pas d'Indochine mais son clip n'est pas signé Xavier Dolan.

Nouvel appel à la tolérance

Pas de polémique en vue a priori comme pour College Boy de la bande de Nicola Sirkis. Il n'empêche que le sujet du harcèlement tient à cœur à Mika. En août dernier, il s'était d'ailleurs exprimé dans une lettre ouverte, publiée dans le journal italien Il Corriere della Sera, où il revenait sur les actes d'homophobie auxquels il a eu affaire de nombreuses fois depuis son enfance. Dans celle-ci, il se souvenait des soirs où il rentrait chez lui «avec un bleu sur le visage».

Hurts représente donc un nouvel appel à la tolérance et à la non-discrimination de la part du chanteur. Ce morceau est paru sur son dernier album, No Place in Heaven, publié en juin 2015. Il y évoque l'homosexualité dans d'autres chansons telles que Good Guys ou Last Party, dédiée à Freddy Mercury. Le remix officiel de Hurts fait partie de la réédition de cet album qui rencontre un succès particulièrement en France et en Italie, où Mika est très populaire.

Hmm, I have very mixed feelings about this video. It goes well with the song and the message is happy, positive, uplifting, all the things why I loved Mika in the first place. So why do I find it so boring?

 

I think I miss the darkness that he often talked about. No darkness or hidden meanings in this video, that's for sure.

And a bit too much of charming beautiful "holy" Mika for my taste. (like in his three last video's). It reminds me of the happy messages that Christian gospel groups are spreading around.

 

I really think it's wonderful that he feels happy and wants to share that happiness with other people. It's beautiful that he dares to be vulnerable and that he's no cynical bystander. I very much respect the choices he is making, his coaching and supporting young artists, his fights agains bullying and discrimination. And I love all the good things he is doing for sick and bullied children and for refugees in Libanon. If there would be more people like him, the world would be a much better place.

 

But I guess somehow, I miss depth, anger, disappointment, ugliness, flaws, a bit of (dark) humour. It's all so good, so positive, so shiny and fashionable, like a glossy magazine such as Happinezz.

Perhaps I miss some passion, something fascinating and brilliant? The feeling of being surprised by seeing new and unexpected things? A bit less dancing around, a bit more showing pain and raw emotion. Of course I'm happy that uncertainty and negativity don't seem to be a big part of his life at this moment. I don't want him to suffer or to feel bad. I just miss something.

 

I hope lots of mistreated and bullied children will love this video and find comfort in it. I hope discussions will follow and that this video will really help solving things. I hope I will end up not missing disturbing and darker things anymore but enjoying all the joyful positivity again. I sort of miss the most that that such joyfulness and positive messages are not enough for me anymore.

I think there is a darkness or hidden message in the video, the video doesn't end with everyone smiling and dancing and cheering, it ends up with MIKA knee down in front of a white wall. The effect of bullying will always be there, it will become lighter and less important, but it have shaped who you are and it will never completely go away, and any similar things will bring your feeling back to that situation again. I know this is a positive video in general, but in the end I feel the pain.

I agree with yang. And maybe you didn't read the information about the film and the book on which it is based, and the true story that inspired the author/the film and the video director, that I've posted a few pages back in. (Edit): Please, take a look if you want to know the context of it. The message is very important and beautiful, but they are neither an happy film nor an happy book. 

And perhaps you don't know that this is a message which needs to be heard very loud everywhere of course, but especially in Italy, where things are very complicated, even when it comes to bullying, especially in schools and especially about homophobic bullying.

Si chiamano affinità elettive e possono nascere anche tra le stanze di un quotidiano, come è accaduto per Mika e Cotroneo che, dopo l’incontro l’estate scorsa al Corriere della sera, si sono ritrovati a lavorare, ognuno a modo proprio — il musicista con il brano Hurts tratto dall’album No Place In Heaven, il regista con il film tratto dal romanzo pubblicato da Bompiani nel 2010 — sullo stesso tema.

IL CASO PIRELLONE - Ieri sera la scritta "Family Day" era già stata accesa per provare l'effetto. La decisione di illuminare a tema il palazzo come fatto per le stragi di Parigi aveva fatto infuriare l'opposizione che aveva minacciato di spegnere le luci. Da lì la forzatura: si accendono le finestre dei piani alti, quelle degli uffici della maggioranza. Spontaneamente, le prime coppie gay hanno scattato foto ricordo con bacio. E oggi, alle 18.30, l'appuntamento è con "Farsi la foto di famiglia davanti al Pirellone! <3. La scritta dalle finestre è stata immediatamente photoshoppata, diventando in un attimo "Family gay". E non solo.

INSORGE IL CENTROSINISTRA - Il sindaco di Milano, Giuliano Pisapia, attacca chi "accende le luci per spegnere i diritti", mentre il commissario Sala sottolinea come "chi si occupa di rappresentanza di tutti i cittadini deve rappresentarli tutti". Già ieri Susanna Camusso, leader Cgil aveva attaccato la decisione "sbagliata". Guerini sui social si rivolge al governatore invitandolo alla serietà. "Maroni pensa che il Pirellone sia roba sua. Si sbaglia di grosso. E' di tutti i lombardi e non si può usare a fini di parte. Serietà". Il candidato Pierfrancesco Majorino colora di tutti di colori la facciata di PAlazzo Marino a segnare le distanze.

PROTESTA UFFICIALE IN REGIONE - La lettera ufficiale di Sara Valmaggi, Pd, vicepresidente del Consiglio regionale della Lombardia, "stigmatizza ufficialmente l'uso improprio che la Giunta ha voluto fare del palazzo di Via Filzi 22", illuminato con la scritta 'Family day'. "Ritengo infatti quantomeno disdicevole - scrive Valmaggi - che il 'Pirellone', quale sede del Consiglio Regionale, venga utilizzato per propagandare iniziative di una sola parte". "Esiste un insieme di regolamenti - continua la vicepresidente - che, come Ufficio di Presidenza, abbiamo approvato al fine di garantire un utilizzo dignitoso e condiviso degli spazi a nostra disposizione e che questa scelta unilaterale da parte della Giunta ha vanificato, umiliando in questo modo il nostro ruolo e il nostro lavoro. Per questi motivi - conclude Valmaggi - ritengo necessaria l'immediata sospensione dell'iniziativa. Chiedo inoltre di sapere se, per questa occasione, sia stato coinvolto in qualsiasi modo il personale del Consiglio. In tal caso mi aspetto che i costi aggiuntivi di organizzazione, oltre che quelli di utilizzo dell'energia elettrica, non vengano computati nelle voci di Bilancio del Consiglio stesso".

MARONI TIRA DRITTO - Ma il governatore leghista Roberto Maroni non si scompone troppo. "Anche questa volta - scrive - i soliti professionisti del "politically correct (???)" non sanno fare altro che sputare odio e intolleranza verso chi ha opinioni diverse dalle loro. Mi fanno pena. Noi andiamo avanti per la nostra strada, che è quella giusta: riconoscere i diritti di tutti, certo, ma tutelare la famiglia naturale garantendole (come noi facciamo in Lombardia) tutti quei diritti che la nostra Costituzione repubblicana stabilisce all'articolo 29: 'La Repubblica riconosce i diritti della famiglia come società naturale fondata sul matrimonio'".
