If you have some idea what the title of the thread is you want, you can search by title:

 

Click on "Search"

 

When the box comes up, click on "advanced search". In the top section of the page, it gives you the option to search titles only - this allows you to add keywords like "deserted island" or whatever, and it will only return threads with that in the title, rather than any and all threads where someone posted those words.
