I'm not good in making reports, you know But today I was on the stage with Mika so I suppose I need to write something What can I say, he is so kind, so warm and very soft Yes, I've hugged him and stepped on his big toe cos he was only in socks, sorry, Mika :'( And moreover he's remembered me from Paris and we talked a bit about Siberia again About Russian music as well and about my trip to Japan Can't believe it's already over :'( Can't wait to see all the photos and videos. I tried to do my best!

Belgian fashionlabels do not manage to get an international popstar every day to design a collection. After collaborations with Ozark Henry and Christophe Coppens, JBC is now aiming higher with "Mika for JBC".

 

The latest collection for men, women and girls was designed with the help of Mika, who scored massive hits with Relax, Grace Kelly and Love Today a few years ago. "I never just did music," the 29-year old singer told our editors in Brussels. "For the EP songs for sorrow, I had my favourite artists illustrate every song and I am very involved at the setdesign and costumes for my show. A clothing line was the next step to express this esthetical vision."

 

Aren't clothinglines of popstars not just there for the vanity of those involved?

 

M: That is such easy, lazy critic. And it is not true either, because if you study the clothes closely, you will see that every reference to me has been kept subtle. My name is not on the front of the t-shirts in big letters and the style of the collection is all apart from showy. By the way, how would you call standing on a stage singing for thousands of people? I don't have to do it to boost my ego and neither to boost my bank account. Then it is better for me to write a happy popsong.

 

Were you really involved with designing the collection?

 

M: I'm not a designer of course, but I was involved in the process from A to Z. I met the creative team of JBC at certain times in London, Zurich, Toulouse and Barcelona, and we all went to New York to get inspiration. The team took their time to find out which direction I wanted to take and what was important for me. I am very sensitive to details of clothes. That is why I carry the whole responsibility of the success of the collection. If it doesn't go well, it will all be my fault. That risk is nothing new to me: if I don't do well at a gig, I am also boo'ed at.

 

How did you end up with a Belgian label?

 

M: I've been a big fan of Belgian fashiondesigners and the double layers that is so typical for them. Nice, but also sinister: that combination is typical Belgian. I've admired Walter van Beirendonck for years. In 2009 I wore his pieces in the promotion of my second album TBWKTM, and I also loved his work for JBC. Even my goddaughter wears designs from the ZulupaPUWA collection.

 

Wouldn't you have rather worked with a big name such as the British Topshop?

 

M: Then it would have become a whole different project. JBC is a small commercial label that invests a lot of time and energy in developing its own fabrics and techniques. The endresult has to sell and has to be profitable, but at the same time they are very stern when it comes to quality - that was important for me. A bigger chain would have given more international attention, but then the result would be more like a supermarketproject. Add to that that in that case I would have had to compromise more. JBC did not make me do things I didn't want to do. As a musician I refuse to work with certain producers because it could damage my integrity. There was no reason to do it differently with the clothingcollection. If the result doesn't match with who I am, then the sales of my records and gigtickets would suffer.

 

Your mother was a dressmaker. Did that help with your collection?

 

M: As a child I was constantly surrounded with patterns and yarn at home. That is how my mother made me appreciate the technique and dressmaker art, which certainly influenced my style. Brand names do not appeal to me, but I do have an eye for beautiful embroidery. More in general, my mother's workshop showed me how to get a group of people behind one vision and how to make sure everybody works towards the same goal. That is how I work now. Everything I do looks like a big workshop no matter if it's about music, a photoshoot or something different.

 

Would you like to do more after this collection?

 

M: It is not my intention to become a brand, let alone let them use me. On the other hand I am realistic. The Spanish beerbrand San Miguel asked me to write a single. The massive campaign they organise around that makes the current budgets of record labels look like nothing. I want to consider such propositions. As an artist you have to be creative nowadays to be present and to bring your music to the attention of people, but that is not necessarily a bad evolution. As long as I stay true to myself, make the music I want to make and in the meantime portray a coherent estetical vision. Saying no is easy - the art is to know when to say yes and why.

però Sara se dovesse cominciare a farsi tutti i talent europei per avere più popolarità come cantante dove troverà il tempo per scriverlo un nuovo album?

più di una volta nelle interviste ha dichiarato di non riuscire a scrivere quando è in tour o se stà facendo altro, che ha bisogno di dedicarsi solo a quello se vuole fare uscire un disco nuovo...sinceramente non mi sembra la strada migliore per farsi conoscere...cmq sono scelte sue e le rispetto, non sempre le condivido ma in ogni caso spetta solo a lui scegliere cosa più gli piace, noi al massimo possiamo discutere tra di noi sempre e cmq portandogli rispetto...

No ma non intendevo sempre xfactor potrebbe essere anche un progetto diverso però qualcosa che possa aiutarlo a farsi conoscere meglio...una strategia di marketing diversa..qualcosa così!

Il problema è che se non inizia ad uscire dall'impasse nel quale è purtroppo entrato il ragazzo avrà difficoltà...non lo richiederanno live e non venderà cd.

Se invece trova dei modi, magari anche non ottimali per noi fan che lo conosciamo da sempre, di uscire un po' di più può "riavviare" la sua carriera meglio. In Italia sarà xfactor, in UK sarà altro, in Germania altro ancora.

Io credo che sia una situazione di stallo che va superata e fare uscire un Cd nuovo ora non so quanto gioverebbe o chiedere concerti live in sta situazione quando nn riempie un palazzetto come Roma non è proprio possibile.

IMO come sempre.

Ma certo, e soprattutto qui danno tutti per scontato che sia stata una sua scelta, quando non sappiamo assolutamente nulla di come sia andata davvero.

Lasciamo che ne respiri tutto il bene, da questa esperienza, sono certa che sulla strada incontrerà persone dello show business con cui scambiare idee, condividere progetti, che possano fare con lui cose belle, e stimolanti per lui, o, più facilmente, capiterà che sia lui invece stimolo per altri e anche questo gli garantirà maggiore autorevolezza e credibilità artistica.

L'ha detto anche lui che in questo momento ha bisogno di condivisioni di questo tipo, e non pensiamo che dentro ad un format come questo non ci sia una spinta a creare dei buoni prodotti, a volte mi sembra che ci sia un po' di snobismo intellettuale, e lo dico io che prima di vederlo avevo la stessa percezione, non conoscendo l'ambito.

Esatto alla fine si parla di aria fritta perché non sappiamo cosa succederà! Quindi..chi vivrà vedrà

figurati Sara, a volte sono io che non riesco a spiegarmi bene scrivendo...cmq per me ognuno ha i suoi gusti ed è libero di pensarla come vuole, a me Morgan ed Elio non piacciono come musicisti, come giudice invece Morgan mi piace molto, è un ruolo che gli si addice perché ha un'ampia conoscenza della musica in generale, specialmente quella internazionale, infatti secondo me lui è quello che dà sempre le canzoni migliori ai ragazzi della sua squadra....

You are so wrong. Past gigs I've been to I have got to know him so much better on a personal level and he is more to me than a popstar. And because I know what a wonderful, amazing and talented person he is, I so want him to focus on his own craft. If that makes me a bad person then so be it. I am sure he will do fine as a judge. I just know he is worth more than to just appear on a talent show. I love him as a person and I get along with him and I care about him. I'd rather have him go in hiding than to do X-factor.

 

I don't want to fight anymore. Sick of this bullsh*tt. I will just focus on his music as it is what makes me happy.

Is the SAME for me Ingrid, gosh I SO wish you believe me when I say that Mika is who matters and then his music and everything. I know him since 2007 and I always followed him with love and respect and I had the opportunity to know him closely as a person lately and he IS special, genuine, true, a great person but that wont change with xfactor! I dont think we can "impose" him to do only music cause as we agree he is a human being, a special one, and he must be free to experiment without being judged by us. That's what I think.

For example I wrote him an upset tweet when I discovered he have changed the whole band but then I realized that he had his reasons. Then the first gig with the new band was good for me I was there..front row. I still upset for the decision and I still think was a wrong one but I dont know the reasons so I accepted it and stop.

This is what I'm trying to do now even more cause I cant tell the future and as Marina said Xfactor here cant be considered trash tv so we dont know what will come from that and if will be useful for Mika as a person and then as a musician.

We bother because we do not want him to be forgotten outside of Italy.

He wont be forget outside Italy for 3 months of xfactor

Feels like for some of you Mika is only a music creator....not a person...like a jukebox that MUST play music all the time...CD after CD...gig after gig, no distractions, nothing else.

I LOVE Mika's music....I NEED it but I dont think that Mika should do ONLY music all the time.

I think that as person, even more as a creative one like he is, should be involved in different things to breath and dont feel too stressed out about writing.

Also I think that IF TOOL didnt have the success it deserved maybe Mika wants to have time to find inspiration.

loro fanno un discorso più ampio, cioè che troppe attività extra come moda, pubblicità, tv, ecc. non gli permettono di dedicarsi pienamente alle canzoni e ai concerti, e di conseguenza non ha il successo che merita.

Si questo è vero ma non è un jukebox! L'hanno preso per questo? Uno che deve sfornare musica senza interruzione per soddisfare il pubblico? Cioè se TOOL non è andato bene trovo anche sacrosanto che possa voler evadere un po' da questa cosa!

Sara, se leggi bene quello che ho scritto io nel post che hai quotato ho usato altre parole ma ho detto la stessa cosa che hai scritto tu qui sopra e che io ho evidenziato in neretto...

la storia della proposta a Mika di fare X Factor in UK io non la sapevo, per questo ho chiesto se fosse vero oppure no, l'ho letta per la prima volta qualche giorno fa e cmq riguardo a Elio e Morgan non basta aver studiato al conservatorio e saper suonare uno strumento per diventare grandi musicisti, il mondo è pieno di artisti mediocri che hanno studiato come loro...potranno sapere di più in fatto di musica nel senso che conoscono la musica , la sanno scrivere su un pentagramma, sanno anche fare arrangiamenti musicali ma da qui ad essere "grandi musicisti" la strada è moolto ma molto lunga, almeno secondo me, ma a quanto pare anche secondo molte altre persone più competenti di me in fatto di musica!

Scusa allora avevo frainteso quella parte Mauri riguardo alla musica in generale.

Comunque nn sono d'accordo quando parli di Morgan o Elio perché io non dico hanno studiato e quindi sono buoni musicisti, dico che sono bravi perché hanno un'ampia conoscenza della musica a 360 grado ed inoltre sono anche eclettici e creativi quindi sono per me bravi musicisti!

ci sono favorevoli e contrari e chi vuole esprime la sua opinione com'è giusto che sia; ovviamente la maggior parte dei fans italiani è contenta,

ma non credo che Mika abbia bisogno di essere difeso o giustificato per la sua scelta o che dobbiamo convincere altri, sono punti di vista.

Certo Mari ma alcuni punti di vista pesano più di altri e se Roberta ha espresso un parere un po' più negativo sarebbe bello sentire anche la tua campana "possibilista" anche perché pure tu sei un utente con un ruolo che la gente rispetta perché le straniere hanno capito (sbagliando) che per noi tutto va bene ma non era quello che avevamo scritto...però sembrano nn accettare l'idea che la cosa possa non essere SOLO così penosa come pensano.

Poi scrivono messaggi a mika dove una parla per tutte dicendo che le fan vecchie non sono contente ma non è che solo la loro opinione conta..siamo vecchie anche noi
