Freddie Mercury! Jasper Steverlinck! The comparisons to Mika vary in the quality of compliments, but everything is better than being called a grey mouse. The British-Lebanese singer that brings a lot of color , is the new wonderboy of pop-music, but you probably already noticed that because of the song"Grace Kelly" and how many airplay it’s gotten, it’s the first track of the album Life In Cartoon Motion, and definitely doesn’t need another introduction.

The song got, and still gets so much airplay, that a human being is beyond the point of just singing along to the song, and is going towards obsessively turning up the volume as soon as the first tones of the song appear on the radio. This is somewhat unfortunate, because grace Kelly is a good song, but too much is too much. People are also drawn more and more to the song lollipop, that’s been played a lot as well (HUH? So not true, I haven’t heard it on the radio EVER). This second song helps giving the album the boost it needs to be a smashing debut album.

Where does this hit phenomena suddenly come from? This young guy, that’s been born less than 25 years ago from a Lebanese mom and an American dad, spent his childhood in Paris and London. In London he stopped studying and decided to take over the world with his light to digest pop music. Starting with conquering the hearts of young teenage girls is strategically a good step. Although Mika goes beyond the level of the common smooth teen-idol, his music sounds sugary sweet and in the good way of the word: cartoonish. Mike is so “wrong” (it’s a word we use for something we totally aren’t used to) and he goes so far in that, that at some point it’s tempting to follow his path.

With his super-high singing and glamorous pop-tunes, Mika packs a good portion of tasty kitsch, that goes in as easy as a beer with an alcoholic. Certainly as it is accompanied with a nice guitar-sound and a funny sounding background choir like in big girl. And then we didn’t even discuss the song stuck in the middle. If there had to be one song the last couple of years that can claim to be a tribute to Elton john, it has to be this one. Although the piano-tune reminds us of some tune for a sugar commercial we had a while ago. In that way still nothing has changed: Mika sounds so sugary sweet and radiant that it’s almost not natural anymore. Sometimes it’s a bit much, and you got to ask yourself whether the song’s been recorded in order of the evangelic channel.

Of course there’s nothing wrong with some form of euphoria in pop-music (as Queen proved many times before) but for people that can’t stand happy faces, or for who isn’t under prozac, life in cartoon motion can be a lot to swallow. Take into account that the scissor sisters-like song relax, take it easy is the least happy song on the album (WOW, they def did not hear over my shoulder….), and you know what you’re up for.

Mika fights away your autumn-depression on thuesday 13th of November in forest national. (whooootttt! And be sure I’ll be there hihi)
