WHEN Mika said the Reading Festival was something he “wanted to doâ€, it wasn’t immediately clear whether he was talking about performing or attending.

 

With the best will in the world, it’s unlikely he will ever get to play the festival renowned for showcasing the best emerging cutting-edge bands alongside some of rock’s biggest names. But there is every chance that Mika’s curls will be spotted amongst the VIP guests backstage at next month’s Carling Weekend.

 

“I have a number of friends in Reading so I have been here quite a lot, but I’ve never been to the festival. That is something I would like to do,†said Mika last week when he played a ‘secret’ gig in Reading.

 

The Beirut-born pop sensation played the Dogma in the town centre, performing hits including Love Today and his number one single Grace Kelly to an audience of VIP guests and prize winners from a series of competitions on 2-TEN FM.

 

Reading Football Club chairman John Madejski was among those guests and admitted: “I didn’t even know who he was but I thought he was really good. I think it is a good thing to be able to get popular acts into Reading and offer the town something special.â€

 

It is, and no-one does it better than the Mean Fiddler during Carling Weekend. Whether Mika can get his hands on a ticket is another thing.
