  1. "I do think glam rock has warped me somewhat, because despite all the people crying "gay gay, camp camp!" about his videos, I am not sure I really see it. Oh, camp, yes. But really, they're not half as flamboyantly gay as they could be. And neither is he, in my opinion. I kind of don't really get all the people going "queer queer! Faggot!" on the youtube comments. Though I guess I take them as expected with most singers I like. What irritates me more are all the people defending him from the "accusations" of homosexuality. Whether they take the simple form of "No hes not gay u r dumb!" or "What does it matter? Freddie was gay and he was still a great musician!" they all seem to work on the idea that calling him "gay gay!" is still a bad thing. I've taken to responding with "Yes! gay gay and fabulous!" to such comments, regardless of my own opinion on the matter. "

--Me, in April of last year. (Might as well be another person, I was SUCH a giggly fangirl then. Ha.)

Me: " Not many journalists are saying anything about the debt his vocal stylings owe to Michael Jackson, who must've also influenced him."

Cyprian: ". . . and they've also passed over the cat whose tail got trapped in the tumble dryer, whose influence is quite overbearing. "

He ended up registering here. Again, from April of last year. :naughty:

  2. That's amazing Marianne! Absolutely top-notch work. :blink::mfr_omg::clap:

IMO he looks most like Mika here:

    mikadoll4.jpg

The eyes and eyebrows are great, the nose is right, the skin is good, and the lip color works. I think he got a bit too pink later, tbh... :blush-anim-cl:

I can't believe how well you reworked the original doll though! Makes me inspired, although I couldn't pull it off...

  3. No one is saying that they have to like each other, just that it's not impossible and Katy's boyfriend wouldn't have anything to do with it one way or another since she met Mika a couple of years ago.

But she met Travis even longer ago. :wink2:

    http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=eiiU-Fky18s

Anyway, I know we're all fun and games, and love to speculate about Mika + ____, but when the person in question has a serious boyfriend, I think it's kind of tacky.

They're friends, they're having fun, there doesn't have to be sex involved just 'cause they're both attractive. And by the way, my gay best friend and I in college definitely linked hands and walked with our arms about each other's waists and cuddled and all sorts of things like that, ha.

As for Adele, I think the fact that we do know that Mika and Katy have been friends for a while and that Katy has a boyfriend has a lot to do with the better reception these pics are getting. :naughty:

  4. Yeah, but "I Kissed a Girl" was the No. 1 single in the UK again this week

(fourth week in a row), after weeks at No. 1 in the US.

    dcdeb

I Kissed a girl was also No 1 in Australia...currently at #5. Hot N Cold is also in the charts this week...

Oh, huh. I had no idea.

    I stand corrected, then.

  5. I'm sorry you had an unfortunate experience with your professor - I'm glad he was reported to the Dean, and I hope he got into serious trouble.

And yes - we have to change our mindset - we can't rely on legislation. In the UK we have had a number of cases where people have been pushing the equality legislation as far as they can.

eg A muslim girl who applied to work in a trendy hair salon as a hair stylist, but expected to be allowed to wear a headscarf. She didn't get the job- the salon owner wanted someone with nice hair on show - so she went to a tribunal claiming religious discrimination. She lost (but got compensation for "hurt feelings":boxed:)

Really? I think that complaint is entirely merited. Whether or not the Muslim girl wears her headscarf has no bearing on how well she can cut hair. What if a bald man had applied for the position--could they deny him the job just because he doesn't have pretty hair to show off, despite the fact that he may be highly skilled?

  6. *cough*mikashouldbemorefamousthenyoubuthesnotbecauseyoursingleislikedbyteensallovertheworld*cough/*

You're confusing the two of them, I think. :naughty: So far, Katy's only well-known in America... and Mika is the one who's famous all over the world. (Less so in the US.) :bleh:

  7. how can u guys not want meat every now and then?!? i love it! specially bacon and ham :blush-anim-cl: how do u do it?

    Honestly?

Well, for one I never liked ham. :naughty:

But for another, any time I wanted to eat meat, I'd ask myself "is my desire to taste meat worth the painful death of an animal that's necessary for me to eat it? Am I willing to say that an animal's life is worth less than my food craving?"

And so far the answer has always been "no." :bleh:

But after I had gone a while without eating meat I didn't want any anyway. It's all rather disgusting to me now--stringy and tendony and full of fat clumps and blood clots.

I had always been disgusted with how raw meat looked, anyway--now I don't have to eat it!

I mean, a chopped up piece of meat looks pretty much like a chunk of an amputated arm or leg or something, doesn't it? And it doesn't get better if you cook it--now it's just a cooked chunk of amputated flesh. :naughty:

  8. When I say I'm laughed out, I mean because I believe in God. For instance: A professor once made a joke about having all the christians go to one side of the room, and then dropping that half of the room from the class. When it came to light that some of us, myself included, actually were christians, we were subject to a lot of indulgent "Now, this might clash with some of your ideas, but bear with us..." even though we hadn't said anything that would indicate we were close-minded or expecting any sort of editted, faith-based explanation.

I went to a Catholic university, but yeah, this happens and is pretty awful. I have actually tried to correct some profs I've seen who did that... the faculty at my current university also tends to assume that everyone is liberal/democrat. I am very liberal, but I've spoken up when some people have made disparaging remarks about conservatives in class, because I feel that's unprofessional.

The funny thing about Greek gods... I say I'm atheist, but I actually have some of my own ideas about Greek gods that don't mesh with the general information on them. Despite that, when in class, I make sure to stick to the generally accepted info. What I believe due to personal hunches, etc, is irrelevant.

  9. Funny thing about the whole "rot when you die" thing...

Back in college, when I was taking an intro theology course, and we were supposed to debate various religions' versions of the afterlife, one kid looked at me in horror when I said I was was atheist and said something like, "but... how can you be an atheist? That means you have to believe there is nothing when we die!" I said that yes, that's what it meant, and asked why he thought it was such a problem. He replied "but it's so awful, it can't be true."

I had to laugh at the logic there. Just because something is unpleasant doesn't mean it can't be true.

And besides that, I don't think there is anything "awful" in the idea that there is nothing when you die. If anything, it's comforting. Not-existing is not painful or anything--it's just nothing! No need to worry about hell, or about anything--it's simply like before we are born.

  10. It's funny to see you guys freaking out about Mika's potential neglect/abuse of his future dog. :roftl: I would take these words as comfort:

This is probably the closest thing I’ll get to a dog for a while yet.

Also, he's been saying he wants to get a dog for a while. In fact, two years ago, during his first US tour he was saying the same thing--he wanted to get a dog when he got home. And I, even though I was full of giddy Mika-love at the time, likewise worried about the various implications of it, and pretty much let him know. :blush-anim-cl::naughty: He immediately said that of course he'd make sure the dog was well taken care of, and he wouldn't just get a dog as a toy, etc etc... But yeah, this isn't a new thing.

  11. If he's giving up blogging on Jack's sayso, well bravo for her. Her opinion obviously means more to him than Simon Cowell's. :thumb_yello:

Won't he just be over the moon then, when I write my eventual "Things That Keep Me a Mika Fan" thread? :roftl:

Maybe he'll even write a f***-off song in my honor? If it's as good as "Grace Kelly," I'll consider myself a satisfied muse. :mf_rosetinted:

  12. I usually say I'm agnostic, but basically I'm atheist. Ie, I prefer to say "agnostic" since I do believe we can't know whether there is a God or not, but I don't believe in any personified God of the Judeo-Christian-Muslim kind. So, despite the fact that I might allow for the theoretical existence of some kind of "God," since I don't practice any active belief in such a being, have seen no positive proof to indicate this being's existence, and don't subscribe to any religious doctrines, that makes me very little different from atheist, in practical terms.

The link provided by racinghorse is, um, really stupid, because if theists can get away with asking "if X is made, there must be a maker," then they should also have to answer how God came into being. If God Just Did, well then, the universe Just Did. At least the universe doesn't have any pretensions of consciously determining all existence.
