  1. My attempt at the lyrics:

    If you're not here tomorrow

    We'll go (?)

    Who will be

    On the beat (x9)

    Take me high high high

    Take me low low low

    Pull me in in in

    Let me go go go

    Say good bye bye bye

    Say hello lo lo

    (?) the heart heart heart

    Like a yo-yo

    Treat me like a yo-yo

    Treat me like a yo-yo

    Treat me like a yo-yo

    Treat me like a yo-yo

    Treat me like a yo-yo

    Treat me like a yo-yo

    Treat me like a yo-yo

    Treat me like a yo-yo

    I'm not goin' nowhere

I'm where I'm meant to be

    So I'm not going nowhere

When you run back to me

    I’ll be here til tomorrow

    Then you’re gonna see

Your turn to do the dancing

    You can dance with me

    On the beat (x9)

    Take me high high high

    Take me low low low

    Pull me in in in

    Let me go go go

    Say good bye bye bye

    Say hello lo lo

    (?) the heart heart heart

    Like a yo-yo

Treat me like a yo yo

Treat me like a yo yo

Treat me like a yo yo

Treat me like a yo yo

Treat me like a yo yo

Treat me like a yo yo

Treat me like a yo yo

Treat me like a yo yo

    Da-da-da, da-da-da da-da da-da-da

    On the beat (x9)

    ---

I'm really not sure about the "..(?) the heart heart heart"  line. It would make sense if the word there was also "treat" as in, "treat the heart heart heart" – but it really does sound like a "sh" sound on whatever that word is. Hmm...

  2. I'm obsessed with this new song, and I can't figure out how I missed it when it played after the gig in San Francisco. My only excuse is that I was on a high from the show, and was just not at all paying attention to whatever was playing in the venue afterward. Bad, bad fan!

@Sivan, thank you for being ready for this in LA!

Anyway, I love this song, and I NEED the studio recording. Need.  I can picture myself dancing to it in a club in some foreign land on a summer night. It's a more dancey, EDM-y, club-y vibe than we're generally used to from Mika, but with his falsetto dancing up and down that chorus it's unmistakably him.

It was kind of a tragedy that the plague times hit right after the last album was released, as I think it's his best to date. But between this song and Modern Times, I'm getting really freakin excited for this new Mika era. :cheer:

  3. I'm straight-up addicted to this song. Like, I need to hear it every few hours or else I start experiencing withdrawal symptoms. :wub2: Haven't felt quite this obsessed with one particular Mika song since How Much Do You Love Me.

Everything about it is just perfect to my ears, from the lyrics to the vaguely 80s instrumentation. :fangurl:

Fun fact: If the Wikipedia entry for the new album is accurate, this is the only song on the new album that Mika alone has a writing credit on, without any co-writers.

  4. These two shows were everything I didn't know I needed. 🥰

I hadn't seen Mika since he played the Adelphi in London in October 2015, and I had almost forgotten how great his shows really are. I try to go to concerts rather frequently, and while a couple of artists have come close, these shows really reminded me that Mika is in a class by himself. I do believe there will be future fans (who probably aren't even born yet) who will discover Mika's music and wish they had a time machine to go back and see him live – if I may employ an overused comparison, much like people of my generation tend to speak about wishing to go back in time and see Queen live.

For the first Montreal show I had floor tickets, and ended up near the front on the far right side; the second night I had a seat in the balcony for a different perspective. There was no barrier in this theatre, so the first night we were right up against the stage. This show opens with a cool monologue about love and energy and the Big Bang - I'll probably try to transcribe it at some point, if no one else has already. He then bounds on stage and launches into Ice Cream, which is just killer live and will probably have a place on his setlist for a long time.

The Tiny Love Tiny Tour is beauty in its simplicity - there's really no set to speak of, and it seems to be all smaller venues. It's just Mika, the band, and the music. Both nights his voice was in great form, and he seemed genuinely pleased to be back on stage.

He's completely re-worked Lollipop – not sure if this version is new for this tour or if he's played it before, but it's jazzy and sassy and shows a spot-on progression/maturity 12 years after LICM.

"Mama told me what I should know; too much candy gonna rot your soul. If she loves you let her go, cause love only gets you down.

But now I'm 36 years, and all that bulls**t I was told

I live my life, and love was found –

And mama, it never got me down."

The new songs are really, really great. Don't get me wrong, No Place In Heaven is a good album – but I think this new album is going to be several notches above it. Whatever combination of his headspace, his creative process, his collaborators, and any other factors - it all seems to have come together to create a really solid bunch of songs, and that's having only heard a handful of them.

Tiny Love is an anthem for the ages. It doesn't really sound like today, it doesn't sound like yesterday... it wouldn't have been amiss in 1982 and I don't think it will sound dated in 2032. It's definitely even better live than the recording - it just weaves from section to section beautifully.

Blue is another new one that's really well done, simultaneously powerful and delicate. During this tour he's bathed in blue light as he sings Blue, which then progresses into Underwater, still bathed in blue-ish light. Pretty cool how something as simple as lighting can add so much.

He did Elle Me Dit both nights, which was a highlight each time. The vibe in that theatre during that song was just on fire. The crowd was really great both nights - on the floor everyone was super into the music and really enjoying it, but there was little to no pushing and shoving or other ridiculousness. When he went off-mic at the end of Happy Ending, the crowd respectfully quieted down to hear him. (That part is such a treat - if I had at all forgotten how lovely his voice is, that was quite the reminder. 💕).

All in all, two really stellar shows. As we sit here on the verge of the My Name Is Michael Holbrook era, I feel like we're about to see some greatness from Mika in the coming year. I'm so glad he's back, and I can't wait to see what's in store.

I didn't notice what time it was when he came out, but he stayed for a long time, signing posters and chatting with the very long line of people who had gathered. Kira asked him if it was the best show ever (she thinks so) and he said "I loved it." And he said "You two were phenomenal during Tomorrow" which,........ AHHHHH. I'm no more articulate about moments like that than I was when I was 16!

Awww, this makes me so happy. So glad you gals got to see him, and that he did "Tomorrow". Hard to believe that first Oakland show was 10 years ago already 🥰

  6. It was amazing! I think all of the songs were discussed so far, but can we appreciate the moment when he was singing unplugged once again? Magic. I was stunned.

That was a HUGE highlight for me. I've seen Mika a bunch of times, but when he went off-mic for the end of Happy Ending I was spellbound, freaking out on the inside like it was 2007 again. Just magical.

Secondly, I was in purgatory, i.e. the dress circle. NEVER AGAIN! For the first third of the show no-one stood up. I mean, how can you SIT during BG, for goodness sake? Eventually when everyone did get up (forgotten what song it was), they all sat down again at the end of the song leaving just four of us standing, at which point the person behind started 'tut-tutting', so we had to sit again.

I recently saw another upbeat, dancey artist with the same kind of tut-tutty crowd. It really ruins the experience to be made to sit quietly in a plush theatre seat while a dance song plays. Sorry you were stuck in purgatory.  :(

I'll thank you Karin for printing the "Thank you flags" at the very last hours because Daeni, who had they printed the day and night before, couldn't come because of personal circumstances. It was Corinne from France and me who had the idea with the "Thank you flags". Corinne had the idea to write Thank you in every own language and then we added the idea with the different flags to show Mika how big is his whole fan family. :thumb_yello:

The flags were absolutely brilliant! Well done to everyone who was involved. It was so heartwarming to see the look on Mika's face when he saw the flags and realized what they symbolized.

Overall I thought the gig was amazing, and I love the new arrangements on some songs. The drums seem way more thumping and insistent than every before, and it works so well. I was never a huge fan of the studio recording of Promiseland, but the live version was perfect. And the dance version of Hurts is spectacular. That song made it feel more like an EDM show than a Mika gig  :teehee:

I loved the acapella bits he included in some of the songs. In We Are Golden he closed it out by repeating the bridge over and over again (now I'm sitting alone...), which I loved. He also seemed to be really connecting with the audience, laughing and cracking jokes. At one point he stole someone's beer, walked around with it for a few minutes, took one sip and gave it back.  :naughty: It was also a treat to hear Over My Shoulder again. In the heart of my 2009-era fangurl days I'd have waxed about how that song is so beautiful it defies comprehension - and quite frankly, I'd still agree.

As far as the French thing goes, imagine you're American and you fall in love with Katy Perry, an English-speaking American singer. You go to see her in America and instead of Firework or Teenage Dream or something, she sings some obscure song in a foreign language that you've never heard of. It's not that there's anything inherently wrong with Mika recording and performing French music, but simply that at a show in London he's got many other options that would better resonate with that particular audience.

Thanks to Deb for organizing the pub party. It was amazing to see so many MFCers in one place.

  7. He's much more open now isn't he. I think it suits him because it means he can truly be himself. In the old days, I used to wish he would come out of the closet, because I always felt he was partly closed off with trying not to talk about it. Now, as the report above says, he's a sassy new Mika, and it's great.

I'm loving all the news from the concerts and the videos. Thank you to all who were there last night and at the other US concerts, it's great reading the reports and watching the videos.

Is it Good Life, or Good Wife? Either way, the song is sensational.

Did you see the Access Hollywood video? He was talking about turning 30 and getting to the point where he's done with putting up walls. He really seemed to embody that in LA tonight. He was just doing his thing and owning it. It's a slight change from the Mika of days gone by, but in a really positive way.

I think it is Good Wife, but it was mis-typed "Good Life" on the setlist.

  8. I can't remember the last time I was THIS excited about a new Mika song. Probably One Foot Boy.

It's perfect. It's got catchy rhythm like Blue Eyes and Love Today, it's got falsetto used like it was in How Much Do You Love Me, and it's got the intricate storytelling of Toy Boy. I watched half a clip from NYC but hadn't paid it a ton of attention. Tonight, in LA, it blew the roof off. Everyone I talked to after the gig was singling it out as an obvious highlight of the gig.

Well done, Mika. You rockstar, you. :wub2:

  9. I don't know if it was just because it's been so long since I last saw Mika, but this show was really, really amazing. :wub2:

The venue was really pretty, an old theatre that I think is usually used as a nightclub. It was unfortunate because a lot of us had will call tickets that needed to be picked up at the box office, however the box office didn't open until the doors did. So while I was collecting my tickets, everyone who already had their tickets ran ahead and got the prime spots.

I got lucky though and eneded up with a pretty good spot. There was a DJ on before Mika (who accidentally asked the crowd "Are you ready for My-ka?" Ouch.) Finally after a million years, Mika came on.

He was rocking the same suit as in NYC, but in this stately old venue it actually made sense. About three quarters of the way through the gig he started cracking up and announced "I've split my trousers". Too funny.

He's done some really amazing things with the arrangements of the older songs. He has SASSED UP Toy Boy to a whole 'notha level. Singing "how could THIS be for rental?" and gesturing at himself. The crowd ate it up. And of course "Billy Brown fell in love with...me. *wink*. I kinda dig this sassy new Mika.

I love what he's done on Blue Eyes, adding the steel drum and playing around with his phrasing. I'm glad there's still room for Blue Eyes in the setlist. It's really held up well over time. I think the setlist was mostly the same as in NYC, though he didn't play Boum Boum Boum and he added Elle Me Dit.

He's in really amazing shape, vocally. I know on some rational level that he's incredibly talented, but after over two years without seeing him I kinda forgot how... captivating?...he really is. His voice and stage presence are really unlike any other. And one thing that really stood out after a couple years away from his shows is how he connects with his audience. I've been to see a whole bunch of other artists in the last while, and none have mastered that connection quite like Mika has. It's pretty amazing to see.

At the end of Underwater he had the venue turn off all the lights, so we were all standing there in darkness. He made some cheeky comment about it being easier to get naked in the dark (!) He then had everyone close their eyes and whisper "Underwateeeeer!" progressively louder until the whole venue was shouting it. It was a really cool effect.

The new songs are amazing live. I'm still on the fence about Last Party, but Talk About You is great and Good Life has the potential to become classic.

Oh, he also told us a story about how he was hungry before the gig and so his Mom went out to get dinner for everyone...and ended up picking up dinner at Hooters. :D

He eventually came out after the gig and signed things for the 30 or 40 people who had been waiting. It was all really chill, with very little pushing or shoving. Well done, LA crwod.

Overall an amazing gig. I can't wait to see him again, whenever that may be.
