  1. Ok, I've been reading up on the ABC News site. A summary so far:

The death toll from horrific bushfires across Victoria this weekend has reached 84, surpassing the number of people who perished in the 1983 Ash Wednesday blazes.

More than 700 homes have been lost in what is being described as 'Hell on Earth', and it is feared the death toll will pass 100.

Twenty-six fires continue to burn across Victoria; 12 of those are out of control. Authorities suspect arsonists are responsible for some fires.

The Kinglake Complex blaze continues to burn out of control and so far has burnt through more than 220,000 hectares. Communities around Glenburn, Taggerty and Rubicon are being urged to remain alert for any threats to their homes.

The worst-hit areas are Kinglake, where at least 18 have died, St Andrews (12 lives lost), and Steeles Creek (seven dead).

Five people are dead in Callignee and Flowervale, three in Hazelwood, Whittlesea and Taggerty, and one in Jeeralang. More bodies have been found at Marysville, Humevale, Bendigo, Long Gully, Strathewan and Arthurs Creek.

    Personal stories:

The reporter spoke to a schoolteacher from Kinglake who said that in the afternoon, Kinglake had not been mentioned on the radio.

"So he went for a walk up the street - there was a bit of smoke around but it didn't really smell like a fire - and he asked the firies if things were going to be all right; they said yes," Mr O'Sullivan said.

"By the time he got back down the street to his house, five minutes later, it was pitch black and five minutes later his house was in flames. He says if he was 10 minutes later he wouldn't be here today.

"So he's lost his house, his school's gone up; obviously he's very worried about the kids that attend that school."

Jay Cherie from Kinglake Central said her family had no warning of what was to come.

"When the power went out I madly started to try and pack some things and in doing so it was like night-time all of a sudden. My husband came running into the house and said, 'grab the kids, grab the cat, we've got to get out'," she said.

"We got in the car and went to go down towards Yea and the flames were coming up over the paddocks towards our place and we could just only settle in the township; we knew straight away our home was gone.

"A lot of people made that same decision; there were probably about 100 cars in the same area that we were in at the time and we had gas bottles exploding around us.

"At one stage there my husband said to my children, 'get down on the floor', because we didn't know what was going to happen.

"We had fire coming in on the right-hand side of us on a paddock and we had houses to the left of us on fire; no-one knew what was going to happen.

"My little girl was saying to me, 'Mum am I going to see my friends again?', she also said to me, 'Mum am I going to live tomorrow?'."

The suddeness is the part that creeps me out the most.

It creeps me out too. Most of the people that have gotten out have described it as a freight train. The toll is now 108.

It's the stories of the survivors that really tip me over the edge. I had to go to bed last night, I couldn't watch anymore :tears:

    Link please darling??

    http://www.cfa.vic.gov.au/incidents/incident_updates.htm

The alerts are at the top of the page but if you scroll down, it gives the details for each alert.

    :wub2:

Phew. You had me worried for a second because I didn't see any such recommendation in the CFA reports or the news.

Sorry Twatty, I didn't mean to worry you. :huglove:

Can I just say that I heart Krudd.. Joward and his eyebrows wouldn't have shown such compassion.

With you 100%. The Queen and British Prime Minister have now sent mesasges and the PM has said that the UK will provide any assistance required.....that was nice too.

I'm thinking about all of you guys too ...

If you read the NSW reports ... there is one for Nerrigundah ... north of here, we have 3 families who are friends who live in that area ... & it's a freakin' tinderbox out there ... .... they are fire savvy so ... I'm hoping they're ok ... *crosses everything*

I'm glad you're ok HK :huglove: I will keep everything crossed for your friends and loved ones.

Fire savvy ?? As best as can be ... we already know that if a fire was close to us we couldn't stay & fight it ... too much dry bush ... it's grab the pups, the photos & get the hell outta here ... !!!

Good girl....at least you're well prepared.

Woke up this morning in Hong Kong to see Melbourne fires on the front page of the South China Post....I just couldn't believe it, but no internet till I flew back to Tokyo and walked in just now. Oh my god, I cannot believe it. 96 people gone, including Brian Naylor, but of course he is equally as important as every other person who died... I am so shocked.

But I wanted to check in that all you guys were OK. I don't even know if my own family is OK, but they are not online and you are, so checking here first.

My heart goes out to everyone affected.

Hi Blue Sky! Let us know if your family is ok.

I expect so ... I chose not to call them direct ... leave their phones free ... but I've called mutual friends ... no-one home ... I'm sure they are meeting with CFA etc. ... they've had enough warning to get out in time I think .... just may lose their properties etc. ... hope it doesn't come to that tho' ...

One of the big tragedies about Vic. fires is that ppl decided to drive out too late .... & burned in their cars ...

CFA are putting out BIG WARNINGS against that ... they say either decide to leave EARLY or stay & fight ... but don't do last min. exits ....

The CFA are always saying don't leave late but I suppose alot of people panic and think they can out run it :tears:

I dont know much about the fires .... ... but my thoughts and love go out to you all .... I have family in Oz too !! I hope your ok and send out hugz !!

Thank you :huglove: I hope your family is ok too!

I've just been reading up on the fires, this is awful!

And I'm so angry that arsonists are involved!

WHAT THE HECK ARE THEY THINKING!!!

The weather has obviously made the bush susceptable to fire anyway, so to start fires is just plain lunacy!

And I see one was a 15 year old boy!

I'm just so shocked and angry that people have died from other peoples complete indifference to human life.

I'm glad you guys in Victoria are okay, I hope it stays that way

    Thank you :huglove:

  2. Has this actually been recommended?! :boxed: :boxed: :boxed:

There is no recommendation for people to leave South Morang. It was on Sky News and all they said was that they had set up relief stations etc in South Morang for the Whittlesea fires and were keeping watch for a change in the direction of the fire.

I've been keeping an eye on the CFA website because they put regular alerts up on their website. DSE is another good site.

  3. Hahahahahahaahaha, I've been paintballing *msnslap*

    :mad3: *hates ukuleles*

I thought that, after I logged out :naughty: Hurt a bit, did it?:roftl:

    Tuning not going well dear?

Who added 'avoiding boys' to the tags? :sneaky2:

I would say Kelzy but everytime I blame her, it turns out to be someone else.....so I point the finger at OKD :wink2:

  4. [/color]

My day was FANTASTIC! AND YES I GOT MY UKULELE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Of course the first thing I did when I got home was strip down and count my welts :naughty: 5 on my arms, 2 on my back, 1 on my leg and 2 on my arse :biggrin2: And a sprained ankle.

    IT WAS BRILLIANT! :original:

And I think I will go and learn how to tune my ukulele now

Welts? :lmfao: What the hell have I missed...what were you doing to get welts all over your body? :das:

Glad you had a great time.....tune away!

  5. Sky News has just updated the toll in Victoria to 76 and they're advising that it will climb well into triple figures. They also said that NSW coast is experiencing horrible winds again.

Don't know if anyone other than Vics will know him but Brian Naylor is unaccounted for but the body of his wife has been found :tears:

OMG. I come back from a fantastic day of having fun to find out the rest of the country has been busy dying and losing their homes, etc

    O.M.G.

You poor bugger! I think we could all do with something to take our minds off the bushfires. How was your day? Did you have fun and have you got your ukelele?

  6. It's good that they're okay... can't imagine how I'd feel if I lost my house and all of my belongings...

A woman on the news was saying about how her dogs were in the house when they left and they don't know where they were... she was in tears and I almost was as well :tears:...

I know, I've been watching it all day and the stories are just horrific. Toll is up to 65 and they're saying to expect it to climb much higher.

Marysville is gone completely....a whole town gone...just like that :tears:

Oh, and you were spot on. I'm not in the fire zone. We live a good hour and a half from Whittlesea but I'd be thinking about getting out if I were in South Morang coz that's getting a bit close.

  7. Hi guys...I'm glad everyone is ok *hugs you all tight*

We had some family friends in Kinglake but they're ok...house is gone but the main thing is they're ok.

Channel 9 has just said that the winds have picked up again :tears:

We've had bugger all rain here so far.

  8. How awful. I'm not surprised, though, since today was officially Melbourne's hottest day on record. The high winds aren't helping either.

City swelters, records tumble in heat

    * Hamish Townsend

    * February 7, 2009 - 1:56PM

Melbourne's all-time weather record has been broken and the city is sweltering under the twin effects of high temperatures and hot north-west winds.

The city hit 46.4 degrees at 3.04pm - the hottest day since the Bureau of Meteorology started keeping records after the building of records mysteriously burnt down 150 years ago.

The previous record was 45.6, set on January 13, 1939 - a day otherwise known as Black Thursday.

"I've got a massive spreadsheet here of maximum temperatures and it doesn't mean anything any more. The whole thing's gonna have to be rewritten," BoM senior forecaster Terry Ryan said.

"Most places around the state will break all-time records."

The town of Avalon, 50km south-west of Melbourne also broke its hottest-day record, reaching 47.9 degrees at 2.50pm.

Wind gusts of up to 82kmh have also been reported at Melbourne Airport, where it was a sweltering 46.8 degrees at 3.03pm.

Other top temperatures around the state include 47.6 at Hopetoun airport (2.30pm), 47.1 at Geelong airport (2.40pm), 46.8 at Laverton (2.41pm), 46.4 at Longerenong in the Wimmera (2.30pm), 46 at Mildura (2.35pm) and 46.3 at Swan Hill (2.30pm).

The temperature also topped 45 at locations including Horsham, Nhill, Scoresby and Stawell.

Melbourne's peak also breaks the previous February record of 43.2, set on February 8, 1983 - remembered by many as the day of a massive dust storm.

Today's record is also hotter than Ash Wednesday, on February 16, 1983.

Relief, however, is on the way with the cool change reported to have passed through Warnambool and Port Fairy in Victoria's south-west.

This should put it on target to reach the city about 6pm, Mr Ryan said.

Temperatures are expected to drop by around 15 degrees in the first hour, though little rain is expected.

No relief from the wind is expected at all as strong gusts, albeit from the opposite direction, will accompany the cool change.

    Source: http://www.theage.com.au/national/city-swelters-records-tumble-in-heat-20090207-80ai.html

They were just talking about the weather being worse than it was during Ash Wednesday...it's unbelievable. We need the rain urgently but I hope it doesn't bring strong winds with it...otherwise the poor fire brigades will have their work cut out for them.

Has anyone heard from Teegs? Doesn't she live in country NSW too?

  9. You hoo! Is there anybody out there :naughty:

I would hate to be forced to create a whole page of me :fisch:

Edit: According to Sky News, 30 homes have been destroyed by bushfires in Victoria and 3 of the 40 fires blazing in NSW have been deliberately lit :tears: ...and a volunteer firefighter in Victoria has received burns to 40% of his body :tears:

Those poor people, they must be so scared:crybaby:

  10. Hello all! The first week of year 11 is over!

I've done every bit of homework on the night that I got it (except for a huge music assignment)! I'm so proud.

I like him more than Andy as well.

    Woo hoo....well done!

    :sneaky2:

Our snow is rapidly turning to slush and is just manky now.

I will try my hardest to get it to rain in South Australia this weekend

Bugger South Australia, what about Victoria and New South Wales (just for you Teegs & HK)

That's because you have taste :cheerful_h4h:

Yep, and I can tell you both exactly where that taste is :naughty:

We don't know anyone is South Australia :naughty:

    Unfortunately I do....and I say let 'em swelter!:roftl:

  11. I was saving up the groping of you for another meetup

I'm sorry about all the rain in Queensland, I was just trying to get things a bit cooler for the rest of you

I'll have another go at the weekend

Can I please request snow and rain Ms. Silver?

That might be quite a while yet I have to say I prefer Marmite

I shall just console myself with the cinnamon mints

    Blasphemy!

Although, I've never had marmite. I though it was supposed to be like vegemite but mum hates the stuff and loves vegemite *shrugs*

: o i love getting to the end of my tiny teddy packets coz i always find decapitated limbs

So, I guess that makes me the only one that likes decapitating them personally!

*instructs everyone to go ans marvel at Petra's masterpiece / Luke's lovely song*

    http://www.mikafanclub.com/forums/showthread.php?p=2111165#post2111165

Petra is made of fantastic and genius.....we all know this!:wub2:

Oooooh... I wanna go ot Melb... well, if K Rudd gets to fork over my $950 (if I actually do qualify for it ) then I might make a visit...

Ooooooh we want you to come to Melbourne!

*holds you to that* They said low income and if they judge it the same way they do for tax, it should be $50,000 or less.....so we would both definitely qualify if the coalition lets it through that is!

When I watch the weather on the news each night I always look for the reports in each of our respective regions ...

I heard today that Melb. will be 40 frikken 6 on Saturday ... but then on Sat. night ... a cool change & will drop 20 degrees !!!

I hope you have some cool change soon too !!

    HK! :huglove:

Don't do that HK! I looked on the weather channel and it still has 43 for Melb and that's bad enough!

OKD - it's about time there were some pictures posted of my grandson.

    I miss Ambrose

    *agrees and demands pics*

Though I have to pick the satin sheets up from either the middle of the bed or the floor each morning

And I did wrap myself in my sleep in my doona a few times, in what I assume was sleep induced episodes of trying to stay on the bed.

Me too but don't tell OKD!

Will fill you in on more when I get back (including the story of me stalking this guy on the way to my plane... this is a note for someone to remind me to tell it when I get back to Melbourne)

Don't worry, none of us will let you forget that one!

  12. First item of business!

Thanks to the GC 4 for my post card....it made my day!

    3. DC - thanks for the message, I can't wait to meet you either and don't believe anything Kelzy has told you :wink2:

    4. Kelzy - You groped everything in my honour but you didn't grope me :tears: I would share Mr. Stanley with you *enters tantrum position*....and what massive fibs have been filling DC's fragile little mind with :naughty: Oh, and you should have your Cyndi Lauper stuff tomorrow....sorry, i got a little side tracked!

To quote Kylie's 2nd album title.. "Enjoy Yourself"

Oh, I loved My Secret Heart!

I had to change my satin sheets when Bianca was here coz she kept losing the doona :naughty:

"Why are there two drumsets? Are there two drummers?"

To be fair though, we didn't really have a certain person in most of them:naughty:

I'm sure if she had have tried to smile, her face would have cracked. :roftl: She so did not want to be there the stupid girl. I mean who would not want to have been in her place

Never mind the boyfriends strange camera, the boyfriend was strange too....but at least he was reaching out for Luke like a normal person. Even if it was freaking his nit wit girlfriend out :naughty:

  14. .....as much as I hate to admit it, you have everything right :naughty:
