A rose has broken up, a precious Arabian rose that has known the full bloom until the end. Her scent was intense and her thorns had made bleed those careless hands that had attempted to prune her prematurely. She had withstood many storms, often facing them without shelter. She was never shy and her unusual beauty was something brazen and audacious. And she knew it. For years I have admired the work of Zaha from far away and I was seduced by the reports of her life and her personality almost legendary.

She was a brave woman, shining, Arabic, intellectual, talented and most fascinating of many movie stars. We met by chance in Miami, guests of a friend. I felt nervous, caught by surprise, but we talked all through dinner. From that day she has become a friend. Zaha hated talking on the phone, she preferred to send messages, and continued to do so regularly, no matter where in the world we were both. The woman that I learned to know was loving and fun. She loved to chat, exchange gossip, go out to dinner with friends and she appreciated the attention. She loved to joke tremendously and if sometimes she ended to inspire reverential fear, in her admirers as in strangers, soon after she turned her head and smiled with a wink. We talked about art, architecture, fashion and television. She liked to comment on the tv shows and sometimes teased me for my own appearances. To some our friendship might have seemed strange, but we didn't mind. We had in common the Middle East and London, but also something more. Our friendship was simple and surprisingly warm. In her, I saw my mother and also saw an untamed life unafraid of challenges. Even though our conversations were still light, full of gossip and complicity, in my eyes she has remained an icon. In Zaha I admired the fighting spirit, but the normality of our relationship was a privilege for me. Yesterday I heard about her death, and I felt a huge sadness. I will miss her.

A Love letter about adolescence in order not to choose to be invisible

I talk about my dialogue with Ivan Cotroneo, the film maker of Un bacio, and the choice to be there with a song. It is a film in which teenagers can recognize themselves without feeling treated with paternalism, and with which adults can empathize, thinking back to how they were at their age.
In July 2008, Ivan Cotroneo was drinking his morning coffee at a small bar in Provincetown, Massachusetts. The writer, now film maker, had just finished translating Where the land ends by Michael Cunningham, a novel that celebrates one of the oldest and liberals cities of America . After working there for many months, he had wanted to go and see Cunningham, and to visit the city in person. It was that morning, over coffee, that Cotroneo read a Newsweek article about the murder of Lawrence King, a fifteen year old gay boy, a student of a high school in Oxnard, California. One of his schoolmate shot him in class, Brandon McInerney, of which King had fallen in love. For several weeks, McInerney was teased in public by King.
"I was shocked by the violence of this murder among teenagers. I was sitting in a cafe in a city that represents America's future, and I was reading a story that seemed to come from a distant past. "
More than a year later, Cotroneo was in the midst of a crowd of several thousands of protesters in Rome, in front of the parliament. They were waiting that the government would vote a draft for an anti-discrimination law, which would have made illegal the homophobia. The draft law was rejected and the crowd was angry. "From now on, it will be their fault. Whenever we will be the subject of cruelty, it will be their fault, "he shouted one protester of just 19 years beside Cotroneo.
"I came home with the feeling to do something. I had to somehow help to change things, " says Cotroneo, telling me on the phone the moment he decided to write a fictional adaptation, set in Italy, of the murder of Larry King. "I wanted to show how discrimination can be destructive, even in people so young."
The book, Un Bacio, tells the story of two high school students. A gay boy adopted, Lorenzo, who befriends and falls in love for Antonio, a heterosexual classmate and basketball star, saddened by the death of his older brother. The story ends like the one of Larry King, with Anthony desperate that shoots to Lorenzo in the classroom. During the promotion of the book, Cotroneo toured for high schools and listened to students' reactions that had read it. Even if he was received with enthusiasm and empathy, Cotroneo soon saw that he had made a serious mistake.
"I met so many teenagers who felt frustrated and sometimes angry for not being included in the story. They kept telling me that they were not immune to these problems - explains Cotroneo - I understand that discriminations are linked together. "
This awareness and the words of the girls who had met accompanied him for years. When he decided to make the film, he thought to correct the mistake and so he inserted the most enigmatic character in the story, a teenage girl called Blue. Blue is an outsider, that hides her previous experiences of abuse, fearing that their classmates and family members can consider her dirty or contaminated. It is an aspect that it'is part of every teenager girl and has an important role in the film.
Antonio, Lorenzo and Blue form a triangle of friendship and love. In one way or another all three are discriminated and isolated. They are real characters, funny and obnoxious at the same time. Blue is funny and intelligent, but can be cruel and cold. Antonio is determined and thoughtful, but he is prone to fits of rage and cruelty access. Lorenzo is an explosion of colors and honesty, but easily becomes offensive and obnoxious.
After the death of Lorenzo, they are all three victims and all three have the life ruined. To push them to the crime is not what they are or what they do, but the environment in which they live and the isolation caused of the discrimination which they must undergo. It is the story of how a seemingly irrelevant discrimination can lead to an unexpected tragedy.
It is a brave and important film, not for the ending sensation, which is indeed the easy part. It's brave for a human way and tender with which tells the story. Because it gives voice and illuminates the darkest and most difficult part of growing up, and it does so with respect. It is more than just a warning, it is a painful love letter to adolescence. Cotroneo made a film in which teenagers can recognize themselves without feeling treated with paternalism, and with which adults can empathize, thinking about as they were at their age. The complex trio shows the futility of the labels and the difficulties of adolescence, emphasizing once again that it is impossible to generalize when talking about sexuality and love.
I composed the music for the film and I made a music video with Ivan Cotroneo, after seeing a preview and I met six months ago the writer at his home in Rome. I found that the film was shot with love and had an original tone, deeply "pop", but serious and funny at the same time. In person, Cotroneo is a private man. An observer of the surrounding world and a tireless worker. He writes every day, and this project is the result of an eight-year journey.
After watching the film, we talked about it and he has changed, becoming lively and talkative. He talked for hours without stopping until three-thirty in the morning, while his producer was trying not to show she was falling asleep on the couch. I realized that this film touched him personally. His characters are exuberant, as he is usually discreet and prudent. I suspect it stems from his teenage years, he has learned to become invisible for fear of being the object of cruelty or discrimination. His characters, full of life and chaotic, have his revenge, and he does not seem to have ended.
"Do you think this film can help to change things?" I ask the phone. "I do not know, and maybe I'll never know." In any case, the film and its characters have already changed him.

Personal reflection...

 

Since Mika started his career I attended every single Mika concert in Italy. 

I'm almost totally sure that I'm the only one.

I mean all public concerts, of course. Not private concerts that Mika does for Valentino and friends, for Pope Francis or for luxury hotels...

 

I'm going to lose this record.

I did not manage to have a ticket for Bari concert even if i will be in Bari that day.

 

This is not a real drama but it is quite sad. 

 

And i also sad if other Mfcers living near Bari did not manage to have tickets.

 

Should i ask the opinion of Mfcers?  

 

Since i'm losing that record, since i'm not anymore an italian mascot  ,  should i to sell some of all the tickets i bought for all Mika's concerts in Italy next summer?

 

Of course I'm pleased to attend them, but to attend all, maybe, it is an useless marathon.
