  1. This thread will never die :naughty:.

I can't believe the headband is back! I saw those pics on Tumblr yesterday and I was confused, but yes, it's true :aah:.

Only trouble is, he looks less like a hippy and more like Bruce Springsteen now, with the headband and denim combination  I'm not sure what to make of this look, to be honest :naughty:.

  2. SO I'VE BEEN TO MY 1ST MGMT GIG AND MET THE BOYS AFTERWARDS!!!

Hi girls, thanks for all your sweet tweets! I'm still on the road and cannot stick to the computer in the hostel too much. I promise a full report later, please wait for me! (But no, I seriously think that no one can beat Taylor's MGMT book, hehe)

Going to a gig in a foreign place is really fun, but it's also a bit intimidating at first. The waiting time was not nice at all! IT'S RAINING. Although it's not really cold in Lisbon, I was all wet. And the worst thing is I don't know even a bit Portuguese but ALL people there were talking in Portuguese! And I'm almost sure I was the only Asian in the gig.... which made me really weird.

Anyway, I just followed the group of girls in front of me. Everyone was literally running towards the entrance as if it's a race when the guys told us we could go in. I ran too, and.... I GOT THE FU*KING FRONT ROW!! At the right and Ben's keyboard was right in front of me!!

After the opening act they came out!! I'd been imagining this scene for so long and I thought I would cry when I finally saw them entering the stage. But no, I didn't. I just felt happy! Genuinely happy! Everything is just normal and joyful! The gig's brilliant of course. I can't recall the setlist maybe later they'll put it on facebook. But I think it's a bit shorter than the other shows??!!!

Have to refrain myself from talking too much about the music. Gonna leave this in the full report 'cause... I don't know, there seems to be too many feelings but in the meantime I don't think I can tell what they really are. MGMT just took my soul away by their music. Awwwwww I've some special moments with Siberian Breaks, The Handshake, and Brian Eno. Totally trippy, it's the first time I've experienced that in a concert. :blush-anim-cl:

The crowd's cool. I didn't feel like an outsider anymore! The girl on my right side doesn't speak English but we looked at each other smiling at times. It's sweet. You see the power of great music?

Since I thought in the worst case it might be the only time I can see them in my life (lol), I decided to wait for them at the artist's exit NO MATTER WHAT. This is crazy indeed. But somehow I was courageous enough... even had forgotten I was actually in a place where I'd just stayed for like 10 hours.

There were approx. 50 people waiting!!!! Wow, as far as I know from your reports, there shouldn't be THAT many?! I chatted with some of the girls and they told me when they were queuing in the afternoon, the band came out and spent some time with them in the shopping mall!!!!! I was like, WHAT??! Then I was more convinced I should wait for them there!

It's raining again. Everyone's wet and it's really cold at night... they came out at around 2am. Matt first. He signaled us to wait and he'd go back to us after putting some stuffs in the car, which he never did :roftl: But Andrew, Ben and James all came out later! :boing: Didn't see Will though... maybe I'd missed him.

There were still 20 people inc. me! So we just took turns to talk to the boys. I was really happy to see them in the most normal way. I mean, not really freaked out or felt like exploded. It's just NORMAL. Far from my imaginations again. They're just too friendly and approachable.

I think my only fangirl moment occured when Andrew put his arms around me when I asked him for a picture. :fangurl: I wasn't as cool as SE I suppose :mf_rosetinted:

I told them I was from HK and it's because of them that I was in Lisbon. I can tell all of them were really impressed. :naughty: And they told me about their gig in March next year in HK... I said, "No... I am not gonna be there. I wish I could but I can't." Andrew just replied immediately, "Oh sh*t!" I said no, Lisbon's good enough. Thank you so much. He thanked me and we shook hands. He told me I was cold. And I said yes, I really was.. maybe that's 'cause of waiting in the rain. He then said, "Oh I'm sorry. We didn't come out earlier"

OMG apparently he didn't need to apologise! Silly sweet dude.

As for Ben, he told us the crowd's great tonight. They really enjoyed playing the show. I thanked him. And the girl next to me suddenly asked, "What's your favourite song?" (strage question) Ben said he never ever has favourites 'cause they keep changing. He asked her back which was her fav song. The girl said "Electric Feel!" Ben was like :boxed: (actually I was like this as well) He didnt know how to respond and just laughed, in a very Ben way if you know what I mean, wahaha. I was listening and only added at this time, "I love Siberian Breaks! It's really great tonight. Thank you" Ermmmm I think he's happy with my answer 'cause he then just looked me in the eyes and said a very genuine thank you. :wink2:

James said my hat's nice (which I don't think so.. it's utterly silly. If it's not that cold I wouldn't have put it on). I told him the HK story again... he said I should take a break from my study and go back to HK to see them! Hahahaha if only things can be this easy!

They signed my tix and I had photos with every of them. It still feels so surreal when I'm thinking about all this today. But at the same time, as I said, it was just nice and NORMAL. I didn't feel like I was meeting some super rockstars, didn't feel even a bit nervous. I love that. I hope you know what I mean... I enjoyed the gig and the M&G so so so much. Thank you again MGMT for such an amazing night. :blush-anim-cl:

Holy crap.. I've already typed so much. Still, there's a lot more I wanna share with you. I hope once my full report is finished, you won't mind reading some of the details again.

    Wow!!

So glad you had a great time, thanks for the report. Lovely that you got front row, and got to speak to them aferwards. Yes, they are very 'normal' guys, well I can only speak for Andrew as I didn't meet Ben, though I'm sure he's the same, but anyway I understand completely what you mean about that :wink2:.

Enjoy the rest of your trip :thumb_yello:.

  3. :yay: Thanks SE for the report, it's brilliant! I'm so glad you enjoyed it, and got to say that stuff to Dan/on camera for the record (although I understand what you mean about wishing you'd saved it for Ben, but hindsight is a frustrating thing!).

I'm pleased you met Ben. I'm still a bit upset I didn't, when I went, but of course I met Andrew instead whereas you didn't, so between us we have the set :aah:.

  4.

Heyhey, any good spots/dishes recommended? I'll stay there for a couple of days! :naughty: A shame that have been too busy to do any planning at the moment because of work.... urghhhh

As for food in Lisbon, if you like fish and seafood there is no better place. Try the bacalhau (salt cod).

The Alfama area (around the castle) is lovely, get a tram up there. The #24 is the best tram to get. Very scenic! Fantastic views from up there.

It's a beautiful city; very atmospheric and laid back. And the people are very friendly and kind.

  5. This one shows how much detail they put in tho, it's weird seeing it :teehee:

    610x.jpg

I dunno. It looks a bit dead in the eyes. And a bit wammy round the gills, as my Gran used to say.

The one on the left looks good, though.

    :mf_rosetinted:

No really, it's not bad. I have seen much much worse (try Louis Tussauds in Blackpool :aah:)I find waxworks extremely creepy though, and kind of hilarious. If I'd been there at the unveiling, I wouldn't have been able to stop laughing! No disrespect to M or his wax self's designer :naughty:.

Thanks to all who have posted pics/reports etc.

  6. One week till "my" gig on the 7th.

On the one hand I am happy to see them. On the other hand - what if I am disappointed? :aah: I have never seen them live before. After Vampire Weekend's gig I was disappointed - too short, too unpersonal... It would be horrible. My expectations are so high, because I love their music so much that I really hope I like the music as well when I hear it live.

I don't know if this makes sense. I am so exited. :boing:

Not long now!! I'm sure you won't be disappointed. Wish I was coming with you :boxed:

    :wink2:

So it's less than a week now!!!!! As far as I am aware, are you going to quit MGMT music for the time being?? :teehee:

And don't worry, you are completely understood for the high expectation part BECAUSE YOU KNOW WHAT, I AM GOING TO THE LISBON GIG!!!!!!! :swoon:

Actually I bought the tix weeks ago but due to some OCD moments of mine, I dared not say it out for fear of ruining the whole thing. But now since everything is decided, I can't help sharing my excitement with you girls! :mf_lustslow: I'm going to London on 14th Dec where my friend is studying and then we'll go to Portugal for the gig on 18th and travel around Spain after that. Everything still sounds soooooo surreal as it'll be my first time to be in Europe, which I've been longing for years! :boing:

I am sharing every of your concern SE because I'm expecting A LOT from them too. Actually there won't be this trip if it's not for MGMT... I'm literally pushing myself to death in order to finish all the college essays before departure....

:yay: So pleased to hear that!! I am SO jealous, because I love Lisbon. I lived there for four years and I miss it so much. Seeing a band/artist I love there would be a dream for me.

    You'll have a great time!

I love that interview with James that Vanessa posted..he's really a talented musician isn't he. The bit about the Radiohead concert made me proud too, as I was there of course :shun::roftl:

  7. As promised weeks ago...

    wethree-1.jpg

Me (left), ewokwicket (Karen), and some bloke out of an American band we met in Manchester...

I look insanely and disproportionately excited. :lmao:

    *runs away*

  8. :lmfao:

If the third album turns out to be self titled, I'll eat my hat. And you can quote me on that, quite literally!

I love the idea of semi-improvising on stage with some new songs though. Actually, I'd love it if they experimented with real-time recording/looping their voices or instruments to create the repetitive effect. It can be very trippy and never really gives the same effect twice. Their 'jam' sections (for want of a better term) in the concerts are already quite trancey anyway.

I'd be more than happy to hear a mix of Oracular and Congratulations styles on the next album, plus a magic third ingredient which even they haven't thought of yet :biggrin2:.

  9. I am seeing MGMT this weekend at FunFunFun Fest! It's gonna be ... *drumroll* FUN FUN FUN!:biggrin2:

    ooooh!!! :boing: Have fun!

Seriously, if you get the chance, go to that M&G. They're lovely guys.

  10. Isn't Ben adorable in that wig? :wub2:

They should so make a video for Song for Dan Treacy, in these costumes :naughty:. Dan could be in it too; he could be the villain :naughty:.

  11. Omg the best thing of MGMT I've seen this month too :teehee:

Andrew's legs are so perfect:biggrin2: !Can you give them to me ?:roftl:

Nice to see James in a Scooby outfit and the video is crazy but I'm curious what were Matt and Will wearing .:mf_rosetinted:

And I think this is at the M&G where Andy is dressed as a visible ghost :naughty:148339_447985531855_669906855_5976132_3426367_n.jpg

Will was dressed as Freddie and Matt was Shaggy :aah:.

Yes I want Andrew's legs, too. Perhaps we could have one each?:mf_rosetinted:

A visible ghost?? wtf? :aah: Did he say that?

  12. Heyhey, I guess y'all have already seen these??

    STILL!

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/stacey_cambre/5134807166/

The vid is really putting a HUGE smile on my face right now, and I literally have laughed out when Velma pats the head of the dog:aah: (What's the dog's name? I ain't familiar with this animation)

I am sure when people who do not know about MGMT as much as we do (?! :teehee:) see these, they'd think they're just some weird crappy popstars :naughty:

    :lmfao:

This is probably the best thing I've seen since...since I saw MGMT live last month :aah:. I would love to have seen them singing song for Dan Treacy dressed like this, as that keyboard riff always reminds me of Scooby Doo music!

Andrew has great legs :mf_lustslow:. Karen said as much when we met him after the gig and I said yeah, whatever, how can you tell under those trousers..but turns out she obviously has a good eye for these things :aah:.

Edit: The dog is Scooby. As in Scooby Doo, Where Are You?

  13. By the way I have a question: is the word "groupie" itself implying anything sexual or what? It seems a really negative word. If I say I am a MGMT groupie, am I degrading myself in any way?? :boxed::aah:

The word groupie does have a sexual connotation, yes, but only if you take the extreme definition. Wiki explains it well: A groupie is a person who seeks emotional and sexual intimacy with a musician or other celebrity. "Groupie" is derived from group in reference to a musical group, but the word is also used in a more general sense, especially in casual conversation.

So it can mean literally a fan who has casual sexual relations with a celebrity they admire, but more often it's just a casual word for an enthusiastic fan - a bit like fangirl, I suppose. It depends on the context. So no, you're not degrading yourself in any way by saying you're a MGMT groupie because it's pretty obvious you're not that kind of groupie :naughty:.

  14. I just read the second part about the Jimmy Kimmel show. How cool is this! I would kill to get that close to them while they are playing. Just standing there and listening. *sigh* So happy for you for going in there and having this experience!

You know what? I have decided something about my gig in December (sold out, btw!). I don't know if there will be an M&G at all and who from the band will show up at that M&G. And since I am sure that I won't be able to say anything coherent to them except "Thank you", I thought about writing the whole band a letter and just giving it to whoever shows up (band, manager, whatever). At least this way I could tell them that I really like "Congratulations". What do you pple think about that? Is it a stupid thing to do?

I mean, I don't want to write something like "OMGOMGOMGOMG", I just want to tell them that I understand and appreciate their music and the hard work behind it. And that there are pple out there who go to gigs because of Congratulations and not inspite of it.

And I wanted to tell them they should release a CD with the prolonged versions of their songs. Or at least a live CD. It would be amazing.

I dunno, I always think a letter lasts at least a bit longer than a spoken "Thank you".

Oh, yes, I could sign with "puppets". :mf_rosetinted:

EDIT: If you guys want to add something to that letter, you're welcome. (socks incidents, ale throw incidents, James incidents :teehee:) or anything else you wanna tell them, just go on. At the end I'll print it out and sign it with "Your fans". Or with our names. Or whatever.

I think it's a good idea. Of course I can't know this for sure but they seem like the kind of guys who would definitely read a letter like that, and appreciate it. Didn't they once say in an interview that they like handwritten letters? (wish I had time right now to find the link). And I feel sure that one letter like the one you're thinking of would mean more than a hundred OMG MARRY ME ANDREW AND GIVE ME BABIESSSSS type squeals. :wink2:

I am sorry, but I just LMAO. Did you read this one? It's an old one. But good:

    http://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/11/arts/music/11mgmt.html?pagewanted=1&_r=1

Hahaha: "So MGMT is not post-ironic yet. If “Congratulations” doesn’t take, the band mates have already invented a future rock hagiography for themselves, picking up where “Time to Pretend” left off.

Mr. VanWyngarden: “Once we get really depressed, we’ll do the hard drugs.”

Mr. Goldwasser: “We’ll make our heroin album. It will be all slow and depressing. It will be critically acclaimed but not sell very many copies, and then nobody will hear from us for maybe 10 years. And then we’ll make a comeback.”

Can someone of the native speakers tell me what: "cavorting with groupies and acting debaucherous" and "is a furniture and design buff" means?

    Thanks.

:roftl: Yes it's a good little interview.

'cavorting with groupies' means sleeping with female fans :naughty:

'debauchery' is indulgence in sensual pleasures, often of an illicit nature :teehee:

and a 'buff' is another word for expert or knowledgeable person.

    Hope that helps.

  15.

I've just finished reading it. PHEW!! :insane:

The word 'epic' really does it no justice at all! Really enjoyed it, thanks. You write so well. I feel like I was there with you! That's always the sign of a talented report writer.

So many little bits I'd like to comment on, but foolishly I've forgotten to make a note of them as I went along and my memory's not great..oh well, I'll just have to read it again then!! :naughty: I'll get back to you.

  16. I've been away for a few days and feel like I have a few MGMT-related things to catch up with, and now I see Taylor's mega report is ready too....!! I need a couple of quiet hours later today, I think.

Not to mention the Mika stuff to catch up on too (lest I forget whose fanclub this actually is :teehee:).

  17. You remember those shoes?

Do you know the song: "Walking in Memphis?" by Marc Cohn? Here sung by Cher:

It's actually a hommage to Elvis Prestley. So it could be that Andrew bought them because of that, you know he's from Memphis too and Elvis lived & died there. If my theory isn't true at least it sounds good. :teehee:

Well spotted! I hadn't even noticed the shoes. I'm so unobservant :naughty:.

I tweeted Andrew's dad the interview of Andrew and he DM-ed me back!!!

@sylamore1 hv u read this latest interview of andrew by @fasterlouder?? http://bit.ly/9qyfI5 very cool one :)

    >> Yes, I saw that one. Thanks, tho.

Actually it's not my first time to receive his DM! I wonder what made him always DM his followers :naughty: Very polite, and funny and sweet of him indeed :blush-anim-cl:

Btw the interview is really good!

I seldom hear them/him talk about Elvis. Are they/Is Andrew a fan of him?

He DM'd you? That's so nice. He does seem like a nice man. I've only ever tweeted him once (to say I met his son and what a gentleman he was :naughty:). He makes me giggle though with some of the weird things he tweets and I only ever follow people that make me laugh or think, or preferably both :naughty:.

And the article is very good. I love how basically honest and self aware Andrew is, when you see past the random BS he sometimes is prone to.:naughty:

He's as nice as his son . I've seen he twits a lot of mgmt fans and I bet he's registered on the mgmt forum .:At least we can follow Bruce if Andrew himself doesn't have a twitter account .

Well I bet Andy is dunno about Ben & co.

Yes I noticed that; he is always tweeting Lala :naughty:.

I'm surprised James doesn't have Twitter, as he seems the kind of person who would have a good laugh with it :naughty:.

  18. Maybe his girlfriend doesn't let him wear :teehee::roftl:

Someone's really missing in the photo

    tumblr_lak6awF8K41qcyeugo1_500.jpg

Matt looks like he's been to the tanning salon :teehee:.

I'm still listening to the Bataclan gig...and PMSL at Andrew singing Brian Eno in that baritone :naughty:.
